November 24, 1991 would be a day that shook the rock world. Not one, but two rockstars would pass away - Queen’s Freddie Merucry and Kiss’s drummer Eric Carr. Of course the Queen frontmen’s passing garnered a lot more media coverage angering the surviving members of Kiss, but Today let’s take a look at the life and death of Kiss’ Eric Carr.
Born in 1949, Eric Carr took a liking to the drums at a pretty young age Carr would tell interviewer Thomas Valentino in 1989
“I started playing in '64 when the Beatles came out. Music became my life and I just got attached to Ringo and the drums. And from then on I really didn't want to do anything but play drums, and be in a band and be famous...I formed a band when I was like sixteen and we played bar mitzas and weddings. We played disco, top 40, rythym and blues and that kinda stuff.”
Carr soon expanded to learning other instruments becoming proficient in bass , piano and guitar. Carr would reveal in an interview that was published on Kissrocks.net that he played in two bar bands prior to joining kiss, one from 1965 to '69, & another from 1970 to '79
By 1980 Kiss’ classic lineup was falling apart. Drugs/alcohol and runaway egos resulted in both guitarist Ace Frehley and drummer Peter Criss leaving the group in the early part of the decade. Criss would be the first member to leave in 1980 with Frehley following in 1982.. Carr would recall hearing about Kiss auditioning drummers from a bandmate of his in and was able to get the contact information for Kiss management and put in a request for an audition. He would tell Valentino . They said send a tape of your playing, a picture and a resume. I sent it in a bright orange folder because I figured that that there would be so many of these on the secretaries desk hat maybe, just maybe it'll attract her attention.
Sure enough, that's what happened. She saw my folder and grabbed it first. They called me and I went in the next day to meet manager Bill Aucoin. He gave me a list of songs to learn for the audition, in the event I was called for the audition. He told me I should shave my mustache off because they wouldn't want to see me in my mustache. I spent the rest of that day learning the 5 songs.
Carr would get the gig replacing drummer Peter Criss in 1980 just ahead of the band recording their much maligned record 1981’s Music from the Elder. Despite that setback Carr was sighted by some as being a shot in the arm to Kiss who were going through a commercial slump in their career. He would play on seven of the band’s albums, many of which went gold and platinum Carr would admit in interviews that given Kiss loyal fanbase he was prepared to receive some hate from fans, but other than the occasional sign that read “we love Peter” fans were pretty good towards him.
There was even of Carr’s releasing a solo album similar to what kiss did in 1978 with each of their members. He would tell an interviewer in that Kissrocks.com published where he said the following. At some point there was once a real possibility of doing solo albums, all four of us, just like they did in 1978. This was in 1981. We took it only as far as getting the album cover art done, so they paid the same painter who did the original ones, and he painted the portrait of me, with the light behind me, exactly the way it would have been if it were released.
After more than a decade of being in Kiss, Carr in February 1991,started feeling unwell. He would visit a doctor who would run medical tests which revealed that he had some manageable health issues.. However, soon afterwards it came ot light that he had tumors in his heart. By April of 1991 Carr underwent several surgeries to remove tumors from his chest and lungs to stop the cancer’s growth. While dealing with his cancer diagnosis Carr would end up being replaced by drummer Eric Singer. Band leaders Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley reiterated to Carr that he would be welcomed back into the group once his health improved. The band commenced work on their follow up album Revenge and as they readied to shoot a video for their single “God Gave Rock and Roll to You” Carr was able to coinvince simmons and stanley let him to appear in the video.
Carr flew to Los Angeles in July 1991 and since he had lost his hair due to chemo he was wearing a wig in the video. Following

When Eric Carr joined the band, my friends and I sent him a silly, teenage fan letter. Several weeks later, I got home from school to find a letter postmarked from Germany. He had taken to time to write back to four fans from Kentucky! It was sad to learn of his illness and death at such a young age. May his family be comforted by happy memories.

He left a huge void to fill, and right at the time of Phil Donahue being silenced (Amy Goodman created my understanding of reality then).

That's good to know. Eric's family is crazy, the cancer was in his heart, it would have exploded if he continued to play the drums... I've never saw Singer as a replacement for Carr but in the end I think everyone knew that even if the cancer was treated, Eric Carr wouldn't have returned to Kiss due to side effects, maybe...

@@redacted2275 won't ever know. They couldn't wait around to find out, there was a mediocre album to record, money to be made, and cheesy videos to shoot.
I've read several articles about how Gene and Paul deciding to move on, and how piss poorly they handled it, how they wanted a, "clean break, no drama," was crushing to Eric, because being in this band was a dream come to life. It was his motivation, his excitement, his joy, his appreciation, his biggest reason to keep fighting with everything he's made of. It's impossible to explain, but a person's mindset, a person's motivation, whatever it is that puts fire, and passion, and the mental, psychological, emotional, spiritual, and especially physical, extreme toughness to go through the Indescribable internal brutality of chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy can be. What some people have to go through when they are in this situation takes everything they have, and every bit of motivation matters. When you take something like that away from a person in the middle of it... I'll just say that they could have, and should have, handled it with a little bit more consideration of what this man, who had given them everything they had ever asked of him, and brought a great attitude and a love of what he was doing, from anyone and everyone who's ever spoken about him. They could have involved him in the writing of the songs, getting his input on the same things that he contributed on all of the previous albums, backing vocals, some lyrics, arrangements, obviously the drum parts, even if they couldn't have him playing those drum parts, he definitely could have been providing his input, his perspective, his point of view as a musician, as a percussionist, as a drummer, and with all due respect to the guy who sat behind the kit after him, he did fill the spot, respectably, but he did not fill the shoes. They never considered any perspective other than their own. Not until Paul's book, and I've never heard Gene discuss this at all.
Carr's family was crazy? They loved this man dearly, and wanted him to survive. It wasn't about playing the drums, it was about the motivation, and the spiritual uplift, that having that goal, his ultimate goal, still being out there, still being what he was fighting for everyday. Whether he played on albums, or went on tour, wasn't the issue, it was taking away the hope and the reason to fight. I won't even touch the his heart was going to explode, because that's just a shitty thing to say ( would it be a shity thing to say if it was said about your son, or father?). So what exactly would those side-effect be of his particular treatment plan? Spent over a decade-and-a-half being educated in and working in Pharmacology and toxicology, and I'm a Survivor, the enemy position, so I might be a little overly sensitive about this kind of thing

According to Kiss manager Bill Aucoin:
"When Kiss took off their make-up and sold fewer and fewer albums, his role was really reduced to that of a hired hand, they cut his salary and shut him out of all the decision-making. It just got more and more borin as time went on, and finally he got the heart problem and underwent surgery.
After the operation he called me, I was one of the few he could talk to about everything about Kiss because I knew everything that was going on behind the scenes. He was sad that no one in the band wanted to talk to him anymore, and the worst part was that Gene had called and said they were going to cancel his insurance.
He called me right after and asked what he was going to do. He came straight from heart surgery and no insurance company wanted anything to do with him. I asked him if he was sure they had really said that, and he said yes.
The following week he died. His parents are still convinced that it was the stress of Gene's phonecall that killed him. It doesn't have to be, of course, but that was as far as it went between Eric and the others. This whole bit of locking someone else out I would never have allowed."

I remember seeing KISS during their Animalize tour in Des Moines back in March of 1985. I THINK Dokken was the opening act. Anyway, my friends, and I, were in the balcony, front row, exactly above where the musicians made their way on and off the stage. I also had a perfect view down below me to see everything that was going on back stage. For, at least, fifteen minutes I watched Eric Carr talk to and interact with about a dozen handicapped kids. Many of them were in wheelchairs. He sat in the middle of these kids and was handing out drum sticks and posing with them for pictures. That showed me the class and character of this guy. It also left a lasting impression on me that I can remember like it just happened yesterday. I'm sure those kids never forgot it, too.

Hardly...the Kiss money machine is so lucrative and Gene/Paul have major influence in the industry.
If they want to postpone a tour for any reason they certainly could.
Bands do it all the time...case in point...Faith No More/Mr. Bungle recently postponed their upcoming tour because Mike Patton is dealing with mental health concerns.
      Gene/Paul could've done the same.
Even if the promoters sued them(and they wouldn't dare), Kiss would fry them in court by delaying and countersuing.

The first time, in Springfield, MA we were hanging around the arena in the afternoon and a friend came running up to tell us Eric was in the Mcdonald's across the street. We ran over and sure enough, he was there grabbing some food. He hung out and talked to a group of maybe 10-15 of us, until he had to go soundcheck. I remember he joked about how Gene and Paul would chastise him about eating fast food, but he apparently loved his Mcdonald's lol. I just remember that he was just the nicest, kindest person to a bunch of awestruck teenage fans that day. And the show that night, oh man, that drum sound! @@g_man2177 KISS at the time were nowhere near as successful as Def Leppard were. Def Lep was MASSIVE at that time. Dude, you gotta understand how the music business works. Also, they weren't in great shape. A lot of their investments had gone bust and both Crazy Nights and Hot in the Shade didn't do as well as they had hoped. Read any KISS biography...it's all there. When you sign a record contract, a record company will demand what they want. That is how the business works. KISS' highest charting records were their last three. Def Lep's Pyromania, Hysteria (especially) and Adrenalize were really big.

@@ferox965 first off Adrenaline was not that successful. More importantly, Paul and Gene were not up front with Eric. Eric was not a drug user nor did he cause trouble for the band. In fact, Eric was the only saving grace of the Crazy Nights and Hot in the Shade tours with his drum solos. So it is not about the business, it is about compassion. But they both genuinely believed Fox was gonna get better, that he was gonna be ok eventually! You can’t hate them for holding onto hope against all odds (even when there isn’t any left)! “Your baby brother is dying, and there is NOTHING WHATSOEVER you can do to stop it and save him; all your connections, status, money, and fame are USELESS!” Who wants to hear THAT?

Unfortunately, a lot of people don’t realize that when you get too big, there’s more than just the members of the band to worry about. You’ve got lawyers, accountants, the record label, and other contractors down your throat to create product. It’s more their money than yours.
Does it make what happened right? Definitely not, but that’s often the reality of it.

    • @redacted2275

No, Paul and Gene always treated Kiss like a corporation. That's no secret, they say it themselves that. Peter and Ace being fired had everything to do with work ethics of a company, strictly business. I'm sure if Peter and Ace were functional addicts they would still be on the band. Since they didn't delivered, they were fired.
But I think Carr understood that even if he got better he wouldn't be able to keep up being a drummer according to Paul and Gene's quality control so... "what's the point?"

If you look at his make up, his face was a canine design, similar to Peter Criss's feline design for his make up, which is why he was called on stage "the Cat".
