The gather step is not the only issue. Players constantly put their hands under the ball and never get called for it either.
The problem with this logic is that IF the ball is going up under it's OWN motion, that isn't a travel. And players have become exceptionally good at doing that. Poole mind you, just strait up carries it...but there is a legit skill to being able to do more with the ball within the rules with harder dribbles.

@@davidreidenberg9941 that's now how the rule is actually written though. Here is the rule directly from the rule book.
A player who is dribbling may not put any part of his hand under the ball and (1) carry it from one point to another or (2) bring it to a pause and then continue to dribble again.
The KEY part of that is the "AND" before the (1). They can put their hand under the ball so long as they do not carry from one point to another or continue to dribble. What this lead to was players putting more power behind their dribbles and then they use their hand to stay in CONTACT but NOT control over the ball. This allows them to then move their hand over and take control and make a move. This allows for the fancy dribbling we see today. The key however was for players to effectively explain and prove to officials that you could do such a thing because most people had zero idea that was possible..it's not a natural thing to do when learning how to dribble or it wasn't until coaches started to teach it.
That isn't to say guys don't abuse and cheat that rule. Cause 100% there are guys doing it. But most of what we see is by the letter of the law, legal. It's just evolution.
The game ball handling has evolved reminds me a lot of video games where players have learned how to change their hand holding of controllers to master the games. NBA players have done that with how they hold and move with a basketball.

@@topshelfdustin3300 agreed. But in real fast time players are hesitating in a carry all the time then dribbling. Luka, and Morant for example despite being amazing carry constantly. But it’s so hard to call a fast game. Refs error on the side of caution as they don’t want to mis call. This allows morant to do a change of pace dribble bringing the ball into a legit carry as he does a hezy(defender has to move up as any time the hand goes under the ball you expect the player to establish position) then morant explodes past them by dribbling again. Go watch any game, his hand is not on the side of the ball each time. It is straight up under the ball WAY TOO often.
Luka Carrie’s in 50% of his post move dribble packages. Change of pace carry into dribbles. These are not true hesitation moves made during an active dribble.
It's not a gather step, it's not a zero step.
It's walking aka traveling.
I would absolutely get rid of the gather step rule. Whether how it's supposed to be or how players are taking advantage. The garbage that is the current NBA has caused me to stop watching it nearly as much as I used to. I will admit that cracking down on players like James Hardens BS has improved it though. Still way too many nonsensical fouls and exploitation of the rules. Idc that it increases scoring it slows down the game and forces refs to become too involved.

I agree - but also the league let MJ get away with carrying and palming that had always been called before in his time, that was when a lot of the carrying on normal dribbles really got normalised and it's only gotten much worse.

Teaching kids to properly dribble thanks to the constant carrying and traveling the NBA allows makes it tough for them to learn. They don't understand the concept of dribbling it without doing that scoop NBA players love to do which is actually carrying the ball. But Fiba is already showing us that we're a joke when it comes to basketball, the rest of the world has caught up thanks to this no defense, high scoring NBA culture we have now.

It doesn't matter if it is helping the league. All sports require integrity to be of any value. Why doesn't the NFL change its rules to only allow 10 defenders? It would help increase scoring wouldn't it? Right? Why dont they bring the home run fence closer in the MLB? Why not Make the goals larger in Soccer? This is such a stupid discussion. A travel is a travel is a travel. I don't give two craps if it "helps" bring eyes to the games. My eyes have gone elsewhere because there is no basketball being played in the NBA. It is something else.
In fact, getting rid of all of the rules that increase scoring the way it has is a good thing in my book. Make each point more important. Eliminate the value of making all plays a 1:1 clear out. Lets get team basketball back into style. I miss the old celtics/lakers/bulls days so badly. Modern NBA is a shadow of its former self. Sold out to the god of commercialization.

That gather step is a complete joke. Can you imagine if the NBA would have allowed MJ to do that? He already was completely unguardable but had they let him take 3 to 4 full steps backwards on his turnaround jumper or just on taking midrange jumpshots he could have easily averaged 6-8 more points per game. I don't know how or why they decided to start not calling that traveling but it really is a complete embarrassment to officiating.

This would have been automatic traveling call in the 90s, both teams would automatically head to the other end of the court. Lebron and Harding dual handedly destroyed the traveling rules thru crying about the call after committing it.

The actual rule that allows a "gather step" wouldn't be an issue if refs actually used it. They don't, though, and that is where the problem lies. If you don't do your best to call the game exactly as it is in the rulebook, then there is nothing to base the rules on and therefore, reffing becomes inconsistent between refs and between games.

There was no gather step back in the day. You got ONE step, and the SECOND STEP had to be a take off. People said 2 steps, it was technically 1.5. Now it's 4 steps.
@@1011skarn yeah the original 2 step rule was nothing more than a pure implementation of both the pivot and travel rule applied to a drive/layup. You grab the ball stopping the dribble and your foot on the ground instantly becomes the pivot. Which you can step off of in the act of shooting/passing. Hence the second step which is nothing more than stepping off of the pivot. Which is why you have to take off from it and complete the pass/shot. Somehow we have left the pure fundamentals of this. The gather step is a lazy invention to deal with players traveling. They didn’t want to blow the whistle as often, so rather they just enabled it.
That being said. It’s actually very hard not to travel by the original rules when playing full speed. This is why way back in the day, the games were much slower. The nba also made the change because they wanted a faster paced game. Though the gather step infuriates old basketball purists, when applied correctly it is more fluid to athletic game pace and that is what the NBA is trying to turn to. Whether some hate it or not. But even by the rules of the gather step, James harden was doing it incorrectly and blatantly traveling more times than not.

It’s a big of both. There’s advance with the rules that young players apply to their game now which are I say skills have increased. Also in shooting. But the carrying, “gather steps”, and the “let them cook philosophy” that allows players to play more free allows these new players liberties older players didn’t have.
Gather step is ok if it is being called correctly. What NBA really need to correct is the “carry”. Some player do the carry, then hezi, then take two steps then dribble again. Thats insane.

I agree, the carrying is out of control. It's impossible to guard people when the defender thinks the ball handler has gathered the ball, the defender makes the read to close out, and then the ball handler dribbles again.

I take issue with the “hesitation move”. Balls don’t hesitate,.They follow the law of gravity. If it’s not moving or falling, something is holding it up.
You can find ways to justify about anything. The bottom line is that these are professional basketball players so they should be able to entertain the crowd and score without exceptions being made to the rules. Now we can't draw fair comparisons to previous eras because they aren't playing the same game.

The games is supposed to change. Look at the athletes we have now compared to 20 years ago then compare them to the ones 20 years before that. My point is players change so ofc the game is going to change and its not changer rather evolution

Harden was smart for exploiting the rule, but not smart for becoming dependent on a exploitation. Now since the rule changed for the hook foul, he refused to change his game, and his game has suffered. It's like a person we've all worked with who knows the employee handbook to the letter. Only so they can know what they can get away with.
The gather step is traveling, and I wish we would get back to the fundamentals of the game. I understand the game has gone global, but NBA basketball is being turned into a version of high scoring soccer. Someone taking 3's is part of the game, but when you are allowed to just walk to the basket without dribbling is hand soccer!
the gather step goes back to the dang 60's. While it's better used today it's nothing new. It's not traveling. It's better timing under the strict rules of ball handling.

It’s not easy to time it legally and usually is nothing more than quickly sneaking in a directional step as the ball is airborne. Then you snatch it out of the air and take your 2 step layup. At full speed it looks like 3 steps. Sadly, nba players do not do legal gather steps even remotely close to how often they should.
@@tripleraze321 strongly disagree that players aren't doing legal gather steps. Overwhelmingly they are very much doing that. Players have become exceptionally good at timing the bounce and their steps in coordination.
Jordan Poole is getting called for Carry’s which is awesome to see, hopefully that gets called more across the league.

While poole is 100% carrying the ball at times, read the rules and then apply it to a ball moving up from an extremely hard bounce. You'll be shocked how much just improving your SKILL can allow you to follow the rules to dribble. Don't get it? Lets take something completely nba unrelated, NES tetris. Yes, the console from the 80's!
Tetris on NES has just been BLOWN UP because players have learned how to change how they hold and use the controller in the last YEAR! Again, a 30 plus year old game! By doing what is called rolling they've been able to reach what was once called the "kill screen" and play on for seemingly forever.
That same creativity is what refs are struggling with today in the NBA. Legit LEGAL plays that look illegal because players have mastered how to manipulate the rules without breaking them. And that's what we WANT from any competition. Players to constantly get better within the rules.

The NBA has made it no secret that they have “improved” the game by allowing offences more liberties and/or adding/changing rules in favour of the offence, usually at the expense of the defence.
My point still stands in 1950s era basketball a wide crossover like what Allen Iverson was doing from the 90s would have been called a carry. Heck half the time many fans were suggesting it should be a carry in the 90s.
There have been a great number of advancements in the game and in player skills absolutely. But there is still a lot of obvious carry’s or palming violations that are visible in real time that don’t get called, be it because of star power or simply because it isn’t a point of emphasis for the referees.
So again, I am glad to see they call it on Poole, but I do wish they would call it more on others too.
@@sambeaumont395 but AI's crossover by 50's rules wasn't a travel, in general. Just like by the rules, the Harden step back isn't a travel. It DID require rule CLARIFICATION because nobody ever thought those kinds of moves were possible in the 50's.
Gather step, push off, walking, flopping, driving your shoulder into the defensive player, among others things, are hurting the game period are making the game unbearable to watch. I get rule changes but when a league tries to crackdown on violations only to give up on them is insane. Referees swallowing their whistles when they see the obvious makes me want to shake my head. Where have all the great referees gone?
Fair rules = exciting play. Reminds me of old school wrestling where the ref didn't see the folding chair.
Also another thing besides blatant travels on drives or the carry. Something that is easy to hide at game speed is pivot foot switching. It is extremely powerful but hard to notice. So often players get the ball from a pass into the post for example. They gather the pass into an established pivot foot but will quickly sneak onto their other foot as the pivot. From there they make a play off of the false pivot. When a skilled player does this illegal move it is nearly impossible to defend. It is hard enough to guard legal moves. The extra space this creates over normal pivot foot post play is straight unfair.
Absolutely, being able to switch pivots is game over, imagine how much left handed players would eat.
The 60s, 70s, and 80s were the golden age decades of NBA. It started to decline in the 90s and today’s game is a joke.

I agree. I say around 1993 when Jordan retired, Bird was retired, Magic was retired and Isiah Thomas barely played. the NBA started going south real quick. Especially for me when Point Guards started walking the ball up the court, slowing the game down

Imagine the NFL having the throw the ball 5 yards past the line of scrimmage rule, then sometimes allowing 10 or 15 yards past the line of scrimmage just for more touchdowns to be thrown. Bending rules is just disgusting. A RULE IS A RULE.

Yes, I would, and I would go even farther.
The correct rule: "...once the ball makes contact with the floor during the dribble, the player is enabled to take two steps. A step occurs any time a foot touches the floor (includes hop-stops)." This would address all double step backs, extended euros, and a lot of spin moves. It drives up teamwork and downplays one on one.
Remember when we were kids and learning the layup? Dribble, one, two, shoot. Or the pullup? Dribble, hop, land (both feet), shoot.
Let's get back to where scoring actually required skill and great execution and defense mattered.

Back in the 90s it was exactly the opposite. I lived and played basketball in Germany as an American, and I hated European basketball referees because of all the traveling that was allowed. Now it's the opposite situation.
the charge rule is beyond stupid imo. Why are you rewarding someone for jumping in front of the basket just to cause a collision ? It's the equivalent of jumping in front of a moving car and blaming the driver. In no other sport is this allowed. In hockey you step in front of a skater and cause a collision, they call interference penalty on you. In soccer its a foul, but somehow in the nba its rewarded. makes absolutely no sense

Gather step has eliminated the midrange game too. You can hop in and out of the midrange area without having to dribble. You were already given 2 steps after a dribble to gather.
It needs to be called. It’s been a problem for decades. It’s not just this era. Look at Iverson’s era. Literally, I couldn’t understand how these 6’ guards with no speed or athleticism can just blow by a 6’7 defensive expert without a problem.

I don't think the gather step is an issue in-and-of-itself. It doesn't necessarily mean you get an extra step. It means if you time picking up the ball with your footwork (e.g., when your foot is on the ground you gather THEN 1-2) the 1-2 count doesn't start like normal. And all that does is add a new set of sub skills to develop. Players always develop micro timing based skills based on the 2 step rules, like Ginobli's late gathering before his 1-2 steps, or even his super long bounding steps, or like Lukas slower steps.
People just need to know the rule and refs need to enforce it consistently.
As for the carrying, its similar: not all manipulations of the ball are carrying. Like developing the skill of using momentum to hang drib or move the ball around in the air, or things like keeping your hand on top of the ball but dribbling really high. Those are within the rules, people just got better at those techniques.
Its a carry if and only if your hand goes under the ball not along side it no matter how funky it looks.
With that said, there is a lot of actual carrying too because refs dont call it consistently and fan dont understand the rule.
One thing some people mentioned that does piss me off though is the over reliance on like essentially charging into defenders. That and push offs. There is an art to subtly manipulting your opponents body within the rules and within the grey area by using physicality and it has been around for a long time. But shit isn't even subtle or artful and almost none of it is within the rules anymore and its like a crime to call offensive foul.

I just wish if they call it, that they call it consistently. It's so dumb to watch the refs pick on one or two players for one or two specific games, then watch them blatantly ignore it in most other games. And there are times it's just a particular team for a night or two. And that in and of itself is just outright stupid
It's hurting the integrity of the league. These guys with amazing "handles" only do so, because of the league allowing them carry the ball and travel. The game is NOT more fun to watch right now. It's embarrassing.
The defensive 3 second rule is the single most game warping rule that has been implemented. Nothing compared to this

The gather step is not the issue at all... gather plus 2 steps is no biggy.. it's been part of basketball for decades. The issue is blatant carrying (taking 2-5 steps with hand under the ball) and continuing the dribble, and obvious travels of 3 + steps after picking up the ball. The way the game is played nowadays in the NBA it almost seems like dribbling should just be optional.

NBA basketball, these days, is more entertainment-themed basketball. The rules are definitely in favour of the offensive. You can be called for a flagrant foul for closing out and challenging a jump shot in the modern NBA. Just look at the All-Star which in my opinion is a joke. It used to be a highlight for me but I just don't bother now. It might as well be the Harlem Globetrotters versus the Washinton Generals. But I'm sure games with a regular scoreline of 82-79 are the stuff of Adam Silver's nightmares.

The gather step is a rule because on the most basic layup, if you slow it down, the gather occurs as (or right after) the first step (0 step) before 1-2 we are all familiar with.
The problem is the timing between the gather and the 0 step is a split second , it’s hard to call with the naked eye and players exploit it.
If a player gathers the ball a split second before the 0 step, travel violation.
If a player delays gathering the ball a split second after the zero step, they can do crazy euros, inverted euros, swing steps & step backs while using the same amount of steps you see the most basically lay up.
Takes more skill to gather the ball late , should be rewarded, hard to officiate.
The rules I followed all my life said that you get two steps off the dribble. To me, anything else is a travel.
They can't go back now, they have at the minimum two generations of players who do nothing but carry and travel.
Get rid of gather step, change it to FIBA rules where you get 3 steps.
The gather step is a falsehood-- however twistedly legal. Basketball means your feet can impact the ground 2x for every 1x the ball impacts the ground.
In high school, no one in our class could dunk. The teacher didn't put up a jumping trampoline from gymnastics and a few colleagues succeeded. What does this mean, that they became super athletes in two minutes? To keep up with today's NBA, the NFL should ban touching the opponent when you are on defense. (that is, you are allowed to take steps and no one touches you)
Can you imagine how great players like Cousy, West, Robertson, Maravich, and Archibald would have been if they were allowed to travel and carry the ball like today's players?
The NBA is entertainment. Competitive basketball stops in march. Worst thing about it, the kids think they can gather step in high school and it’s cost them many times over.
Just a refresh from the current NBA rules:
Section XIII-Traveling
A player who receives the ball while standing still may pivot, using either foot as the pivot foot.
A player who gathers the ball while progressing may take
(1) two steps in coming to a stop, passing or shooting the ball, or
(2) if he has not yet dribbled, one step prior to releasing the ball. A player who gathers the ball while dribbling may take two steps in coming to a stop, passing, or shooting the ball.
The first step occurs when a foot, or both feet, touch the floor after gaining control of the ball.
The second step occurs after the first step when the other foot touches the floor, or both feet touch the floor simultaneously.
A player who comes to a stop on step one when both feet are on the floor or touch the floor simultaneously may pivot using either foot as his pivot. If he jumps with both feet he must release the ball before either foot touches the floor.
A player who lands with one foot first may only pivot using that foot.
A progressing player who jumps off one foot on the first step may land with both feet simultaneously for the second step. In this situation, the player may not pivot with either foot and if one or both feet leave the floor the ball must be released before either returns to the floor.
WAKE UP!!! 3 STEPS AFTER THE GATHER STEP IS NOT A RULE, IT NEVER EXISTED GUYS!!!!

The original idea of dribbling a basketball off the floor was essentially like bouncing the ball off a gym wall to yourself, or a bounce pass to a teammate, thus enabling legal movement of the ball around the court. This technique originally allowed brief moments when the ball wasn't in the player's possession. However, recent changes when a player has the ball and tricks they’re now allowed to play, such as extended gather time, additional steps, and disregarding the pivot foot have significantly altered the game, and seriously changing the game we all once cherished.
I remember trying to do it the way I saw NBA players did on TV and being stopped for travelling. It drove me banannas as a kid. 😅
When I was a teeneager during the Jordan era, watching all the Bulls games, and then playing basketball into my mid-20’s, not once did I hear of the BS term gather step or zero step. It was pretty simple. You’re allowed 2 steps on the run after you stop dribbling, but in a galloping motion, not a slow walk. Anything other than that is a mutilation of the pure rules.
There have been multiple travel calls, against both teams, in every single game I've watched this season.

It doesn't just need to be against both teams. It also needs to be against stars and journeyman. Everyone for everything so that nobody is exploiting anything.
I just wish the offensive player shouldn't be able to intentionally make contact with the defensive player while the defender is in mid air. D-Wade did this alot
Streetball is cool because both defenders and offensive players have freedom. If only offensive players have freedom the game nor only becomes boring but players get used to a style of play that doesn't work in other leagues. Narrowing the gap between us and other countries.

None of that is gather step, it's just blatant traveling. The "gather step" is the foot on the ground when you pick up your dribble, then you get two steps.
Modern NBA is no longer a sport , it's a show with the sole purpose of making money and the actual rules of the game are irrelevant ... not at all unexpected if they have the players in scripted verbal fights like they do in WWE pretty soon
Once you gather, every step that hits the ground after that should count as a step and you only get 2, imo the problem is someone will gather it .5 seconds before their foot hits the ground, and that step is the 0 step, allowing them 2 more and it just looks ridiculous.
I have been complaining about traveling for three decades now. I quit watching. They might as well just do away with dribbling altogether, make it an option,and no shots from inside the arc. Just run up and down the court and hurl threes all game long.
It has become pretty boring.
Traveling violations nowadays are not called often, just like palming the basketball, it is not called as a violation much anymore.

The "gather step" is literally traveling. Refs also never call carrying, and offense fouls on the ball handler have almost become undefined. It's ruining the NBA.
Should we bring up non-stop moving screens (I could literally post dozens of videos of Lebron grabbing defenders and clearing them out...and he is NOT the type to set screens!!!) right in front of refs and they don't blow the whistle, NOT even 1 time!!!
I couldn't point out travels, carrys, double dribbles, illegal screens, and many, many more blatant violation, but young people only see what they want to see!!!
I like the gather step, it allows for more flexibility and variation. But letting only NBA guys do it is unfair, I wish we were all allowed to do it in high school and college.

I'm Brazilian, football is my favourite sport to watch and play, and one thing americans say about football is that there is too much flop, while i do think there's certainly a good amount of flop, on the other hand i do belive they just don't know shit about how the sport is physical since they barely watch it and they probably never played, so some of the things they call as "flop" really hurt. The reason i don't like basketball as much as football is mostly cause(at least in the nba) the refs are HORRIBLE and the calls aren't consistently, somethings they call for one team while not to the other, they give u technical fouls for nothing (btw go watch a football game, the only way to receive a yellow card by complaining is touching the ref aggressively or say really nasty things, even if you're rude they would at least give you a warning then if you're rude again you might get one but is not something that happens oftenly) so as referring i do think football is more accurate than basketball, there is also the fact that the game doesn't stop as much as a basketball game or an American football game

The rule itself isn't the problem, it's how the players, refs and league are interpreting it or counting the steps. It does not allow a third step, but everyone assumes it does.

The gather step is garbage. I don't like it. The NBA needs to change the foul call that allows the offensive player to create contact by jumping into the defender. It's boring to watch free throws and dumb calls like this handcuff the defender.

The point is that the rule didn't change at all! The current rule states that after the gather step the players may take 2 additional steps not 3 so the thing is that they didn't change the rules but they are just not calling it because most of these superior and more athletic players apparently can't respect the correct rules so instead making them respect the rules they just decided to stop counting to 2.
Also carring the ball is no longer called, during MJ's era they called carring also to him many times, today LeBron is the bigger stepper and carrier the league has ever seen!

In some of the clips that you show here, you are mixing the gather/zero step (clarification) with carrying/discontinuing the dribble.
The gather/zero step has been more or less called the same even before, but I believe it was officially added to both FIBA & NBA rulebooks in 2017, as a clarification, if I recall correctly.
Though I agree with the general point you are making - enforcing the rules correctly & consistently, makes a far better experience for both the fans of the game and the players.
I emphasize though, removing rules is not the issue here, correctly & consistently calling violations is.

What is really frustrating is that the gather step does not entitle the player having additional steps once the gather (0) has been made and the 2 legal steps afterwards are done.

The added 3P analytics for spacing, the hand check rule, the Hack-a-Shaq rule, the clear path fastbreak foul were all plenty to add offense and clean up the game.
But the "pocket ball" carries/travels and the step-back (3-5 steps) all need to go. I'm sorry, 104 pts vs 113 pts is not entertaining when they're carrying the ball. And honestly it's just two guys in LA Fitness chucking 3s back and forth and seeing who misses instead of epic 1-on-1 defense battles anymore because you CAN'T PLAY DEFENSE. So it's just LA Fitness all over again, no defense, 3 chuckers. I'd rather see more physicality and people have to be able to shoot over a contested defender and you'd start to see guys guard each other more which is WAY MORE entertaining to watch IMO.
