Changes that happen to a body after death

- In this video we discuss some of the changes that occur after death and are definite indicators that the body on the table is not about to wake up. We've all heard the stories of people waking up in mortuary cold storage, in a coffin or in other places they really shouldn't be, so we wanted to reassure you that there are, in fact, some fairly obvious signs that the deceased is actually deceased, before the prep begins, paperwork and lack of breathing aside.
It's a topic that came up on our recent livestream and because very few us (thankfully) ever get to see an unprepared deceased body, we thought we would run you through some of the physical changes that happen in the hours and days after death.
Thanks for joining us,
We look forward to seeing you next time,

New to your channel and I really like it! My best friend is in hospital dying right now with end stage cancer. It's helped to know the care that will be taken with her body when she dies. Each person who dies has a family, friends and a community who loved them, and it' a comfort to know their bodies are treated with respect and dignity. Thank you so much❤
Sending big love to you and your friend at this tough time. 💜Thanks for your beautiful comment. 🪷
Rcently had a close friend pass rather suddenly and have found comfort in your videos (I’ve watched a lot so far). Thank you for helping me get through a tough time and find some peace.
We are so very sorry to hear of your loss. Sending you our deepest condolences. Take good care. xxx
Thanks for the video! I work in a nursing home in housekeeping/maintenance, not a healthcare worker. The first time i saw someone actively dying/dead, I was not scared but definitely intrigued about the process.
That's interesting. We don't often consider the non healthcare workers exposure to death in these situations
the kitchen staff, wardies, volunteers even people like the dieticians and physios. If you are on the outside looking in without the grief the process is very interesting! Thanks for your comment🙂.
My mother passed away March 28,2023 from a Massive Stroke.
These videos have helped me so much dealing with her death.
Thank you so much!
Oh no we are so very sorry to hear such sad news and so recently 😔 we both send you our deepest condolences 🌹 and words are just never enough in time like these. You be kind be to yourself and please take good care 💚💚

Hi Vickie, we are so happy you could join us. Thanks for the lovely feedback. Have a beautiful week 💖
2 more death doula weeks! Tanks to you having that talk. That made up my mind. So grateful. x😘🙏♥️🌹🌹
Yeah we are so happy for you 😍 and you must keep us in the loop when you get started on your own 🥰💚💚
My aunt made us promise to use a mirror due to her fear of being buried alive.
Years ago in the Appalachian mountains the dead were kept on ice and they set buckets down for the melting ice. And the old Appalachian custom "sitting up with the dead" the young girls and boys used it as a social occasion. I can imagine how it must have been sitting there at 3am with a dead body and listening to the drip drip drip of the ice melting...
I'm a BSN and I live in Church Hill TN in the B&Ws (bushes and woods) LOL
LOVING YOUR VIDEOS AND NEW SUBSCRIBER HERE!
Wow what a fascinating insight to you traditions & culture, thank you so much for sharing.
And a welcome to the channel 😊💚💚
You have to love kids . Nana lived in a granny flat in the back yard . We did regular health checks to make sure she was fine . One afternoon the kids informed us that Nana was still alive as they could hear that the television was still on . From the mouths of kids I share this story with the utmost respect to all . In thier eyes it was a sign of life

Ladies please let us know how a body is dealt with when they are a donor. I am a donor and my family are horrified at the fact I won't be in tact when it comes to the viewing and final goodbyes. Only my internal parts are donations ie heart, liver, kidneys, lungs, and eyes.
Thanks, ladies. Love your channel.
Thanks so much! 🤗💚💚
When my mum was dying her forehead was very cold because her circulation was gone. I watched her take her last breath as the nurse stood on the side of the bed feeling her pulse. She said ‘it’s still there, very faint, do talk to her as hearing is the last sense to go’. The nurse after about a minute she took a last breath and the nurse, still feeling her pulse said ‘she’s gone now’.
After she died a doctor came into the room and examined her before signing the death certificate. There was no breath. he checked her pulse, listened to her lungs, looked in her eyes and shone the torch in them, then put the sheet over her face. So the things you described were done.
So very sorry to hear you have lost your mum 😞 sending you our deepest condolences 🌹🌹 so very special you for to be with her at the very end not many of us get that chance 😢
Thank you for sharing your story take good care 💚💚
My dad was a mortician. He used to also put a mirror by the body’s nose and mouth to see if there was condensation from exhaling air.
Hi, thank you for sharing, lots a different way we're used 🙂

Great video, beautiful gals! Hope you’re both doing well. Congrats on the new subscribers! 💃🏻
Hi Heidi lovely to hear from you 🥰 thank you and yes suddenly lots of subscribers ☺️ hope your well take care 💚💚
Just so interesting, thank you. I was once really good friends with a family that owned a mortuary, and we had some really uhm… interesting lunch conversations. 😂 You both are such a delight. Hello from Missouri, USA.
Hello out in Missouri 😊 oh yes we can imagine them conversation 😉 Thank you for sharing take care 😊💚💚
I noticed with my Grampa, he died of Mesothelioma,, right away his eyes within an an hour after his death, his eyes clouded over, one eye open, one eye closed, his mouth was open...he was on hospice. No I didn't see it on the internet, I saw it in real life life... My grampa was my life!!
We are so very sorry to hear you lost your grandpa 😞 sending you our deepest condolences to you and your family 🙏🌹 please take good care 💚
Hi girl's i had a friend that his dad had a heart condition with his heart and on a few occasions he was pronounced dead and about half an hour to an hour he would wake up and walk out the mortuary thanking them for their help, he did eventually die for real now that would be scary ❤
Hi gorgeous, that would be horrific for the family too! So sad. 😔 Thanks for sharing xx💜
Hey Girlies! I absolutely love this channel. Thank you for helping to educate and calm nerves around this topic.
You mentioned "milky eyes" and I was just wondering if that can happen before death as my grandmas eyes looked very different, milky right before she passed. She'd woken up just before passing and was able to spend time with each of us and I noticed it then. She probably passed away no more than 2 hours after she woke and said her goodbyes.
Hi, thank you for your kind words ☺️ xx
So sorry to hear you have lost your grandma 😔 sending you our deepest condolences 🌹
Yes sometimes the eyes can look a little milky just before death, it's got to do with the slowing down of blood circulation and the body slowly shutting down, it doesn't happen to everyone before death but will appear not long after. Take good care big hugs 🤗❤️❤️
Hello ladies from Fulton, Missouri. I really enjoy listening two you talk. ❤

Really glad I found this channel! It's helping me deal with my father's passing and the eventuality of my elderly mother. Question: do the eyes always open or does it depend on if they were that way when they died?

There was a fellow here in Salem, Oregon USA, Jose Antonio Peña, who was a drug dealer from Mexico. He was stabbed in the heart and died. However, his grandmother was a devout Christian woman who always prayed for him. So it was that he found himself awakening from an absolute darkness to find Jesus reviving him and telling him to go be an evangelist, so he woke up during his autopsy ( very startling to the two doctors working on him). They stitched his heart wound and of course, his wide open obdomen. Now he is an evangelist in Mexico. I met the man and he has the scars to prove it.
Goodness. What an amazing story. Remarkable. We hadn't heard about him so thank you for sharing 💜
Love you guys!
Congratulations on the new subs! 🎉❤
Thanks lovely, it has taken us quite by surprise. 🥰🎉
I feel like the best way to know that a person is dead, assuming they had one done, is an autopsy scar. If they have that, they're definitely not alive. That sounds sort of like a joke but I'm being serious; I'm also not trying to be a know-it-all because she's clearly an expert at her craft. That Y scar would definitely be a definitive indicator, though! Obviously, a lot of older people haven't been autopsied but many other types of people have, hence my suggestion.
Sidenote: I've spent 23 years in nursing and have even had to do postmortem care on many people of different ages, and our ways of knowing they're dead -- though not quite as profound or set-in, being that they've typically died shortly before -- are the same as what's mentioned here, for the most part. When they're dead, you know they're dead; that's why it always baffles me to hear stories about people waking up on the autopsy table or at their own funeral. It blows my mind that they've made it that far without anyone realizing they were alive regardless of appearing as if they were.
Nevertheless, this is such a great channel. I have no idea why it was suggested to me but I'm glad I checked it out. It's really nice knowing that there are people in that industry with compassion!
Thank you so much for sharing and we are glad you found too 😘❤️❤️
Hi faves 😍 you mentioned rigor leaves the body after however many hours. Does it fully leave the body on it’s own or do you always have to do some sort of massage or fully relieve it? Sending BIG love to you both xx
Hi Jess lovely to hear from you 😘
Yes rigor mortis last up to around 2 or 3 days and it a chemical reaction due to decomposition so it naturally disappeared as naturally as it arrived without any intervention of massage just the difference stages of death. Sending big hugs back to you lovely 😍💚💚
Thank you for the interesting content. I was distracted watching this episode...I kept waiting for lines from the Monty Python Parrot sketch. 😃

Hello, from the U.K..
I'm new to your channel & love it! 👍.
Hi from Brisbane Australia 👋 and thank you for joining us 🤗 💚💚
I’m definitely not getting embalmed. I’ve told my family I’d much prefer I never even went to a funeral parlour and they would bring me home and bury me quickly without any strangers touching my body. They could wash me if they wanted, but not necessary. A cardboard coffin would do fine , and an oak tree planted on top so I become the tree.
Hi you do not have to go to a funeral home, especially here in Queensland Australia ( not sure where you are in the world or the rules in the funeral industry there) familyi can do the funeral themselves here. Make sure your family are aware of your wishes as there will be lots of legal paperwork to fill out before a burial can take place and issues of a death certificate. Have a written will will help too. Take care 💚
I love this channel! I do have a question for Tracy. A few years ago my grandad passed away and when he was embalmed they had to break his jaw to close his mouth. How did they do it? Thank you. :)
Hi Elizabeth, So sorry to hear you have lost your grandad 😔 sending you our very best 💚 & thank you so much for your kind words 🙏
I have never heard of any Embalmer breaking a jaw to close the mouth. So I am very sorry I can not really answer that question.
Is it possible that the Embalmer was referring to rigor mortis in the jaw and used a jaw clamp to loosen up the jaw ? This helps in reliving the rigor but won't break the jaw, I think maybe that's what happened but I can't be sure. Take good care 💚💚
I will say that I woke up in a coffin because I hadn’t yet died, I would die right there of fright!😮
😮 let hope not ❤️❤️
once again ladies love your post because i do wan't to know so now i'll just go heave up. cheers from north qld
Oops Shane 😨 hope you are ok 😉 hope you are still warm up in North QLD, it's just got very cold here in Brisbane 🥶 💚💚

I love your channel. My mother asked to be cremated with her dog’s ashes. He was in an urn and I often wonder if they cremated him in his urn or if they just put his ashes in with Mum after her cremation. I like to think his urn went in with her coffin before her cremation.
That's lovely. It can be done either way 🤷 sometimes people want the urn, others not. It's a lovely thing that they got to go together. Trish has four animals and her mum to go with her when she dies 🙂💐

Thank you for your awesome channel. Just wondering with cremation. Are silicon breast implants removed beforehand or ok? Not sure if this topic was previously covered.
Hi, thank you for your kind words 🙏
Yes we have covered this before. The answer is no we don't remove breast implants of any kind. Thank you for your question take care 💚💚
Great work (as usual) Trish and Tracy!!! Question for Tracy, you mentioned receiving someone from a nursing home within 2 hours as an example…how long is the longest time you’ve had to hold onto a body? Thanks in advance, my friends!! 🖤🖤
Thanks lovely Missy 💚
The longest I have cared for and looked after was two children (brother & sister) for nearly 4 months 😔 . The children were embalmed, the family were waiting for the children's mother to wake up from a coma so she could say goodbye to her children 😢 it's one of the hardest things I have done in this job. Every single day I checked them made sure their little hands and face had plenty of moisturising cream on them (embalming as you know dries out the body) hoping every day their mum would wake up. She did wake up and she got to see her children. I think about them children and the mother often💔
Thanks Missy and you take care out in the surf 😉 💚💚
@@Areyoudyingtoknow What a beautiful thing you did for the momma.. what happened to the children 😟
It’s times like these stories where we’re blessed to have someone like you. Some people are just born to do certain jobs. Thank you for all you do and for your reply! Hope everyone has a great week!! 🖤🖤
Thanks so much Missy 💚 I do feel like it's where I belong. 💚
Hi Jen, unfortunately the family were in a terrible motor vehicle accident, the mother had no idea her children were gone. I just can not imagine the pain the family when through. It was the father/husband who was determined to have the children cared for till his wife woke up and he was told by the hospital she never would. But he was right she did. It's a heart breaker story, I just hope mother & father are doing ok 🙏 ( it was 5 years ago now) 💚
Hi lovely lady’s, I’m a new sub. I find death so interesting (maybe I’m strange). My dad, 2 sisters and I were with my mum when she passed from cancer. As I was the closest my dad asked me to close mums eyes, I was gentle but they wouldn’t close so I tried again because I didn’t want to upset dad. But I couldn’t do it, I didn’t want to be rough with mum. Could you please tell me why it was so difficult to close her eyelids! Thank you 💞
Hi Rachel welcome to the channel but firstly we would like to offer you our deepest condolences to you and your family on the loss of your mum 😔 we are so very sorry to hear.
Relaxation of the muscles occurs right before someone passes away, which is then followed by rigor mortis, or the stiffening of the body. This relaxation impacts the muscles in the eyes and can cause some to open their eyes right before passing, and remain open after passing, it's also impacted by dehydration of the eyes too. This is part of a Morticians job in the mortuary to set the facial features of the deceased. We have technics that helps close the eyes and keeps them closed using eye caps. The eye caps have tiny raised edges on them this cribs the eye lip and helps hold the closed. Hope this helps you understand. Take good care 💚💚
As an ED Charge Nurse, I love a good 'sternal rub!'....Steady, ladies! 😂😂😂
🤣🤣 oh my goodness your funny, your right we read it like you thought we would 😉
Take care as always 💚💚
Once you have seen some one die you know what a dead person looks like.
Exactly. There is rarely any doubt.🤷 Thanks for watching 💜
Oh dear god! My dear best friend (over 30 years) took her own life, in her car in the garage. Her 18-year-old son found her 3-4 days later. I cannot even imagine the visual effect this will have on him for the rest of his life. Would her body smell? Would her eyes be open? What would this sweet boy have seen?
We will answer this in an upcoming video. Thank you for the question x
Hello Ladies from Queensland I have just subscribed to your channel you are bot very informative, I lost my husband in 2003 to cancer and was with him right to the last held his hand the whole way. We had a viewing 4 days later and I was not prepared for what I saw, I saw what appeared to be a stitch in the corner of his mouth and his eye lashes were stuck to his face, (he did die in hospital) I spoke to a person who helps you through grief and I mentioned these 2 issues she then said she had gone on a fact finding mission with the hospital morgue concerned and told me that the mouth is not stitched and they eyes would have been massaged shut with some sort of cream is this true?
Hi Jackie, we are so sorry for the loss you have been through.💜 Each mortician does things their own way so we can't say exactly how he was cared for, I'm sorry but generally the eyes are shut without stitches or glue but the mouth is sutured shut..I always take great care that the stitches can't be seen. One of our first ever videos goes into a basic body preparation which is how I care for the majority of people in my care so you may want to watch that one..we also do two videos with a live model showing the complete process and explaining everything clearly.
It was lovely of that person help you to find out. We hope you have made some peace with this. Take care lovely 💕
I love your show. Charlotte,NC in the house
Aww thanks lovely xx
I was the only one with my mom here in our home when she passed away from cancer in Feb 2022 i had a pulse meter on her finger & when she was almost gone her heart rate went up about three times then her oxygen level dropped i new something was happening i got up to go in the other room then turned around quik she was gone she had had her mouth open but her eyes & mouth actually closed so i didn't have to do that i did get scared for a second cuase about 5 minutes after i heard a puff of air come out of her nose i thought maybe to wasn't gone but she was she stay warm for a while i had kept her here for 2 hours so her grandchildren could say goodbye before the funneral parlor came & got her & she was creamted i still miss her so much my dad died years ago at 56 of cancer then my favorite aunt died at 42 of cancer its a ugly desease
What a sad thing for you to experience, we hope you are ok. Thanks for sharing.
Yes, cancer is hideous and far too common. 💜
My worst nightmare 😂 someone in my funeral home waking up. Holy shite😂😂
Agree with Tracy, I would be the same 😬💩💩 💚
My husband passed away 5 years ago from cancer . At the viewing i noticed a lump under his nose ..can you tell me what could have possibly cause that ? I was so devastated at the time I didn't even ask questions
Hi Irene, so very sorry to hear you lost your husband 😞 please accept our deepest condolences 🌹 hope you are doing well 🙏
At the time you never think of asking questions because you are in such a different place in your mind when lossing a loved one. I really can not say for sure as I never seen your husband but I would guess it was a piece of cotton. Cotton is placed in the nose to stop and catch any fluid that may leak after death.
I hope this helps you a little, take good care 💚💚

I know, refrigeration helps preserve a body and cuts down on older, but does the body externally decompose after being in a refrigerator for several days?
Hi Dawn, cold storage only slows down the decomposition it won't stop it and it won't stop the odour. The answer to your question is yes the whole body slowly decomposes in cold storage. Thanks for your question take care 💚
@@Areyoudyingtoknow also, when a body is in the refrigerator for two or three weeks, do they still get discolored with liver Mortis, or does the coldness help that dissipate?
The cold only slows the changes down, it won't stop it, thanks x

Hi Jenni, so very sorry to hear you have lost your husband 😞 sending you our deepest condolences 🌹
No you probably did not image it, if your seen it, it happened, some people do lose their colour a little when death occurs. Thank you for sharing hope you are doing well, take care 💚💚
My father’s body turned yellow within the hour after his death. He died of heart failure. He was cremated without a viewing. What causes this and does it go away on its own?

hi Tracey and Trish!I am a huge fan now.Tina Turner posed away this is so sad😢
Yes, talent and fame can't protect us from what we all face, unfortunately 💙
This is something I’m really interested in doing but have no idea how I would go about it.
If you could point me in the right direction that would be great 😊
Hi, here in Australia the easiest way in is to apply for jobs in the funeral home such as a funeral directors assistant, transfer of the deceased or funeral director. Once you have your foot in the door that way you can then work your way into mortuary training as it all on the job training here. In the USA you have to go to Mortuary school for 3 years I think. Goodluck 💚
Butvshoukd not rigor mortis be completely gone/ reversed by the time u get them?
No not always. Rigor mortis takes anywhere from 6 hours to present till around 72 hours to naturally dissipate. I often care for bodies within that time frame. Thank you for your comments take care 💚
When my uncle died before his death he was purple all on his back.
Yes, that is just a natural settling of the blood. 💜 Sending love xx
If an individual suffers a blow to the face causing a bruise perimorten, what color would the bruise appear after death, blue, purple or black?
That's a difficult question to answer as I am not at the actual time of death. I see the body usually a week or so after death. Thanks for your question take care 😊💚

My mom was just cold when she passed..
We are sorry you lost your mum Jackie, that's tough to deal with. Take care
Hi ladies!
I have a question for you.
What advice do you have for someone wanting to get into the funeral industry?
I have been wanting to do funeral work since I was only 7 years old!
I have tried so many places and no one will even bat an eye at me.
What can I do to be noticed??? I'm losing my mind! 😅
(Also, I am 24 now incase you were curious 😂)
Hi lovely, yes it's very hard to get in. The best way is to keep sending in your resume to every funeral home in your area with a letter of interest. But be will do do any kind of job such as FDA (funeral directors assistant) Transfers of the deceased, office administrator work, funeral arrangements. If you put your hand up for any role it's will give you more chance. Also just call funeral home some have open days for people looking to get into the industry. You also have to be committed to work on call roster. If you show willing to all these roles it will help. A lot of funeral homes will hold onto your resume for a while so you never know. Good luck 🤞💚💚
Why does the mouth and eyes open wide upon death?
Hi Joanne, it just became all our muscles relax. Thank you for your question take care 😊💚💚
Crazy!!!!
...but true 🙂
What is a delayed death?
Its a condition they talk about when discussing people 'waking up' in a mortuary.. its a question for a doctor, sorry, not really my field.

Hi Lisa, its out of care and respect to take care of a loved one once dead. Our bodies are coved in bacterias and we use an antibacterial body wash to clean and also fluid could have leaked from any orifice, so we need to clean this up before dressing and placing them into a coffin or casket for viewings and service. Thank you for your question take care 😊💚
Late to the game but i just thought about muslims who bury within a certain amount of time
Yes within 24 hours usually ❤️❤️
Hello from Chicago
Hi in Chicago 👋 thank you for watching 🤗💚💚
You mean that you don't hold a mirror under their nose and look for the condensation on the mirror? 😂
🤣🤣 oh the good old days 😉
Hope your well David 🙏💚💚
How are you both young ladies . I am glade the technology is advanced in making shore that the deceased is dead. I heard that years ago when I was child that they use to put a glass mirror near the deceased mouth to see if there was a breath on the glass of the mirror?. Hopefully both of your lifes are full of cheers and enjoying life to the fullest?
We are both well thank you Wayne 💚 hope you are too x
Yes we have heard that before, oh the good old fashioned techniques classic 😉

Hey Kal, the nutritionist and the embalmer think that you are dead. Don't believe what you are being told. They both have been partying too much. Keep on your dark glasses, otherwise Tracy will be checking your eyes to see if they are cloudy🤣!
🤣🤣 Hilton you are to funny 💚💚
Behave yaself Trish 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Ok Karen, you caught me. Thought I hid it in the edit. The question was asked ' how can we be sure they're dead'.. the answer to me was obvious...but Tracy had a heap more to add so that was lucky 💜
Hello!!
Hi Susie!! Have a happy week xx💚
DEATH is inevitable
It is ❤️
YOU show nothings.... 👎🏻 All u talk about, we know already !
Hi, thanks for your comments. Yes they is lots of other channels that show more graphic images than we do.
We are not about that, we care and respect the deceased and would never show anything without family consent or even the deceased persons consent (before they death) our channel is talking about death, as we are here answering questions that are sent to us by our subscribers. We are not for everyone, thank you and take care.
Lame.
Lame and pathetic.
Each to their own.
