  • I buy a £300 Perodua Nippa and see whether it is any good or not. Recorded on my Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini, which turns out to be pretty handy for video recording. I imagine Jeremy Clarkson is hugely envious of me.
    The Nippa is known as the Kancil back home in Malaysia, and was the cheapest car you could buy new in the UK at the turn of the century.

    I love cars like this. Not everyone wants a big, thirsty, expensive to maintain car. Every once in a blue moon we get a new entry into the super bargain basement car market and all the press hammers it so badly saying that it doesn't ride very well or that it doesn't handle like a Ferrari. WTF??? It's an entry level transport car what do you expect? People are so out of touch with reality anymore that they want $9,000 dollar brand new car that performs like a Bugatti Veyron. I need to move to Wales so i can be among the sheep instead of the idiots of the world. Lol

    I bought a 1998 Nippa back in 2013 for £300 too, with only 25k miles on the clock. I've grown to really like it, it's never let me down, it's been 100% reliable. I use it occasionally in London where I live but mainly for twice monthly trips between London and Newcastle and have also done several long trips to Europe including Turin, Cologne and Budapest (there are lots of these cars in Hungary too). As you would imagine it struggles a bit going up hills on high speed roads but I soon got used to living with that. Apart from going up steep hills it feels relaxed and comfortable on long motorway stretches between 70-80 mph. The fuel economy is amazing for a car of this age both on summer and winter tyres.

      +neville kendall They are good for what they are. We've still got ours, though it's only clocked up 2000 miles since purchase. My wife quite easily gets 55mpg, though it tends to be 48 when I'm driving for some reason...

      Greetings from Indonesia 😁. I daily drive a 2003 Daihatsu Ceria, rebadge of Perodua Kancil here. Odometer will get 400k km in the end of next month🤣. Unlike UK where used car price are plummeted, here cars price are very expensive, even the used one. I have to pay about $2500 in 2016😅. Sorry for repost.

    Bought one 12 months ago with 3 months MOT on it showing a genuine 24,000 miles from an 83 year old lady giving up driving who had owned it from new.
    Thought I may have over paid giving £300 for it but when I presented it for the new MOT and it flew through with no advisories I realised I had a bargain.
    This is my daily hack to and from work a 40 mile round trip in all weathers. I don't worry if it gets dirty or I hear a stone fly up and hit it. Costs pennies to run and always looks presentable.
    I have to own up that I treated myself to the brand new Mazda MX5 this year ( totally awesome ) for a special birthday this year but keep it for best. That way it still remains fresh and exciting when I do drive it.
    For my everyday runaround the Perodua Nippa serves me very well indeed.

      It's what we paid for ours with similar miles. Ridiculous! Still hasn't got 30k on it. I've just been out in it in fact. Super-basic, super enjoyable. Hardly refined, but that's not important.

      Mine done 31,000 miles now and not missed a beat. I change engine oil ever six thousand as recommended. Next MOT due in March hopefully will not present any issues.

    As Victor Meldrew said in One Foot In The Grave 'I do not believe it'! I am always watching your videos, but this one came as a surprise!!! The car you have there, Y675 TKM, was my Uncle Cecils car! It's lovely to see it on the road still, I thought it would have been scrapped by now! The car was purchased in 2001 by Cecil Gower of Ashford from John Childs garage here in Kent. My Uncle passed away in October 2013 age 98, but I I drove it to John Childs garage in the April before he died as the MOT was about to expire! My Uncle was too frail to drive after having a fall at home. The car hadn't been used for a couple of months, but to my disbelief it started first time! I pumped the tyres up, which were the original tyres. As I drove it to John Childs garage, I noticed that it had only covered just over 10,000 miles, which I knew was correct, as he always told me he did less than 1,000 miles a year. My Uncle always had cheaper cars, the one before this was a LADA Samara, however he always maintained them himself even when he was well into his 90's and he looked after them! It was always kept garaged and never used in bad weather, if it did rain, my Uncle used to dry the car off with an old tea towel because he always said it was bad to but a wet car in a garage! By the time he had the Nippa, the only driving he did was to Sainsbury's once a week and an occasional drive to Hythe or Tenterden for a day out. If my memory is correct, I believe the only mark on it was a tiny dent the size of a 5p on the boot lid where I accidently dropped the padlock from the garage door onto the boot lid! I didn't tell my Uncle that! Ha ha ha! I don't think there was a spot of rust on it anywhere! John Childs gave my Uncle £200 for the car. He said that due to the low mileage, it would probably sell quickly. But I had my doubts as I found it very uncomfortable to drive and couldn't think why anyone would want to buy a car like this! Ha ha ha! You may not believe a word I have just said, but if the paperwork (which was included with the car when my Uncle sold it) was still in the car when you bought it, you will see that Cecil Gower was the owner 2001-2013. He would be pleased to know it's still going! I will tell my Auntie, my Uncles wife, that it's still going, she will be pleased as she liked that little car! Great video, brought back some memories for me!

    • @HubNut
      @HubNut  8 лет назад +5

      Brilliant! There has been only one owner between the two of us. It's still very tidy and still with us too. It now has 28,000 miles on the clock, though sadly it does have to live outside. Still has the huge John Childs sticker on the rear window. Thanks for the story.

    • @Vintageaudiofan1992
      @Vintageaudiofan1992 8 лет назад +1

      Excellent, I am so pleased you have it! I thought it still had the sticker on the back when I sold it back to John Childs, but I couldn't remember! What I would like to know, is what the hell is it doing in Wales? Why did it suddenly go all the way up there? I certainly wouldn't drive that far in it! Ha ha ha!!! My Uncle loved that car, and I do believe that we have pictures of it somewhere! I took some just before it was sold, I shall try and find them! Does it still have a small dent in the boot lid? Ha ha ha!

    • @HubNut
      @HubNut  8 лет назад

      +Vintageaudiofan1992 It does still have the small dent. We bought it from a chap in Liverpool, who I think bought it from John Childs. He had it delivered, but I drove it 120 miles to Wales. It is tiny, but surprisingly good at speed.

    • @Vintageaudiofan1992
      @Vintageaudiofan1992 8 лет назад +3

      Ha ha ha, sorry about the dent, I dropped the padlock on it when I was locking the garage up, until then it was in mint condition! :-/ I seem to remember it being quite nippy, but I also remember it being very noisey and the pedals were a bit cramped! It did run well though, and I don't think my uncle ever had any problems with it! The year before it was sold, it had a new clutch. All the old reciepts, MOT documents and TAX discs were in a blue folder when I took it to John Childs, but perhaps these have gone now? I found all the paperwork and thought it would be good to keep it with the car as it was in such nice condition! Well, keep driving it, keep it going and enjoy it! My Uncle would be over the moon! He was sad to see it go, but he had to stop driving due to failing health. I think my Auntie wanted me to have the car, but due to already having a good car, my little Corsa, I had no need for it and I didn't have the space to keep it! :-) Thanks for the chat!

    I bought one of these brand new in 2000 for £4,495. Great little car, the engine is very eager and surprisingly brisk around town, it’s a bit out of its depth on the motorway but that’s to be expected. This car has everything you need and absolutely nothing you don’t. Bargain basement motoring at its best, there might be lots of exposed metalwork inside and it might feel a bit tinny but it’s well screwed together and great fun to drive.

    I had one pre-2000 850cc kancil. the carburetor need occasional servicing & tuning or it gonna drink petrol like a V8. Watch out for rust on radiator hose connectors it will leak without notice. If you gonna do a bit of off-roading with this car expect some oil leaks. Treat it with respect and it won't let you stranded on the side of the road.

    I love cars like this. My mum had a K reg Mira from ‘99 to ‘02, given for free by an elderly neighbour who’d given up driving. It had only done 5000 miles or so and was a brilliant runaround. I was at primary school at the time and I used to love how unique it was outside the playground come hometime! Sadly traded in for a ‘99 Ford ka, which rusted unbelievably!

    Considering you've still got it nearly 4 years later, it has been a good buy. I sense you'd have to go looking for one as they aren't commonplace in the UK. It would be perfect for a town car, I mean hiring a car in the UK can be £100 (after vat, and excess protection etc and all the extras they add) a day, so even if your in the UK for a month, picking up something like this for £300 is well worth it. Even if you live in the UK, perfect as a work car/second car.

    I bought one of these brand new in 2000, rather foolishly I bought it on finance too!!! It’s real back to basics motoring and all the better for it, the 3 cylinder engine is surprisingly willing and has a nice sporty note to it. I’m 6’2” and did some impressively long journeys in it. Would love another one some day but they are a bit thin on the ground these days, I definitely preferred it over it’s replacement the kelisa.

    I bought one of these in 2008 and ran it for 6 months as my daily before I and two mates used it for the Mongol Rally. It was absolutely outstanding, lugging 3 lads and our camping gear 7500+ miles in 30-odd days and not once did it miss a beat. Our only issue was a cracked exhaust.
    Brilliant brilliant cars. If I had space for a second motor, I'd definitely get another one. :)

    Wish we had these little commuter cars in the US. Daihatsu was here with their solid, dependable little car marketed as the Charade. They found the sub-compact market crowded with Toyota, VW, Nissan, Honda, as well as all the domestic makers producing something similar for Corporate Average Fuel Economy requirements. All the competition had an established reputation and customer loyalty. Diahatsu, as the new-kid-on-the-block, decided they couldn't make a go of it and left the US market. I haven't seen one in years.

    • @HubNut
      @HubNut  7 лет назад +1

      Steve Randall Sadly, Daihatsu has also left the UK market. Its products were always a bit too unconventional. See my Sirion video as an example.

    I'm so envious that you got the efi's over in the UK. Over here in Malaysia, all we had were the carbies. I used to own those in 850cc trim. Gem of a car. Though, it wasn't really great on gas mileage. I was merely getting 15km/litre. Had to trade it in for those perodua Axias which did approximately 18-21 km/litre. Not too shabby for a base spec'd manual car which cost around rm24k / GBP 4.5k brand new in 2018. Cheers!

    Great car. It was my wife's first New car and we clocked 125k before selling it off as we had kids and needed a bigger car. Eventually, when the kids grew up, we bought a second car ( a second hand one ) and we used it till 2013. Must admit i was a bit emotional letting go the car. but, we needed an even bigger car with bigger booth space for long trips. We now owned a perodua Alza and I hope to read the review in a few years time. It as brilliant and reliable as the Perodua Nippa ( called Perodua kANCIL here in Malaysia )

    I have a 2005 Daihatsu Mira with the 660 cc engine here in Japan. It came with power everything, air conditioning and automatic transmission. The gasoline mileage is therefore disappointing for such a small engine, only 47 mpg if you drive at a steady 45 mph. Don't laugh; the national speed limit on non-expressway country roads is 37 mph. Maintenance would be cheap if it weren't for the mandatory "inspection" every two years which costs about $650. I bought the Mira in 2013 and it has treated me well enough.

    Interestingly enough on "old top gear" on You Tube Steve Berry rates the Nippa highly and if you look up the Kelisa then Richard Hammond raves about that on the old Men and Motors channel. There is no getting away from it simple but robust and quality engineering sold at a good price equals a good car. We have a Chevrolet Matiz - its a 56 reg on 75k now. We bought it 2 years old and took it from under 20k miles. It just goes.... its fun to drive and reminds me in many ways of my old Dyane - thrummy off beat engine, 4 doors, 4 seats - transport . Thats all transport - reliable and cheap to run that occasionally needs a tyre or a wheel bearing. Whats not to like?

    • @HubNut
      @HubNut  8 лет назад +1

      To be fair, the Nippa is some way short of being a quality vehicle. The interior plastics are awful, the ride is hilariously bouncy and it just doesn't have any power. It is good fun though, and just sailed through another MOT. I bought a Daewoo Matiz brand new in 1999. Loved it. Depreciation aside. I've not bought a brand new car since.

    • @darrenwilson8042
      @darrenwilson8042 8 лет назад

      +HubNut - depreciation on the Matiz hasn't really been an issue for us - half the price of a new one when we bought it just 2 years old and I guess now its 10 years old its done all its going to do in terms of depreciation. In eight years we have therefore lost less than £4k in depreciation and for some time now I suppose that means its been all gravy !! The good weather is ( supposedly ) here or coming soon so time for a service - I really do think that this type of car - Matiz - Atoz - Mira and the like are from an era where cheaply produced but well engineered cars were being made and missed by the majority meaning there's some really cheap runarounds out there now.- quite fancying a Myvi at the moment as I know the Diahatsu Sirion that spawned it was a good car.

    Imagine dropping a turbo’d Cappucino engine in this?

    • @HubNut
      @HubNut  6 лет назад

      +RichieT5 Daihatsu fitted their own turbo triple to the Mira, so that'd do.

    My mother had a Daihatsu Domino. Any relation?

    • @HubNut
      @HubNut  7 лет назад

      Very closely related. The Domino was an L70/80 Mira, which came before the L200 that the Nippa is based on. It used the same 847cc engine.

      Cheers mate. It was a nice little car, good around town, and better built than the European cars of its time.
      One felt slightly vulnerable when travelling in it though.
