well they may not necessarily be as isolated as you think. the Summer Islanders may have maps of southern Sothoryos and they don't like sharing them. that would historically seem to suggest that maybe there are people there they trade with and they don't want their trade secret out because right now no one knowing about their secret trade partner means they profit the most off of them. Thing is George has clearly said while these areas do exist in his world he’s not going to expand on them as they’re just there to fill out the map and add some history to the world which is a shame but makes sense when he has so much more to still do in Westeros alone
George R. R. Martin isn't looking to explore/expand-on such lands anytime soon. It was easy writing whole Bibles when he was broke. Now though life has changed with all the money, birds, jewelry and exotic Sports Cars.
Love Essos far more interesting and mysterious then boring Westeros shame it’s not focused enough in any live action show, love to see Yi ti brought to life.
It bugs me how Valyrians didn't see 10k ships passing by their territory neither with naval patrol nor dragon riders or they let them be to see what would happen to them if they tried to settle in Sothoryos like experiment
@@CivilizationEx I just took it that it was the territory and resources and most fit of slaves they wanted and not the women, elderly and children as they would be more trouble than they're worth. In other words, they had bigger fish to fry.

The northern giant jungle and winding rivers running through its northernmost area also just totally reflect the amazon, idk how more people dont pick up on this.
To add to that, the natives are said to practice cannibalism and make blood sacrifice, just like how the native people of south America were said to practice (although alot of what is said about that is exaggerated and coming from corrupt sources, the Aztec empire did practice ritualistic sacrifice) also their big cities seem very reminiscent of mezo-american cities, specifically the idea of abandoned cities hidden deep in the jungle, which could be referencing actual Mayan city ruins that have been found similarly
Also, while I like your idea for the reason why the dragon rider never found the southern edge, I am personally of the opinion that there was some magic shenanigans going on there, maybe with time dilation, maybe with space dilation, I don't know. We know apparently that Planetos is smaller than Earth, so considering how fast a dragon flies I can't imagine it taking 1.5 years (1.5 to the most south they could reach, 1.5 back) to be able to at least see the end ocean, seeing as people like Amelia Earhart were able to do loops of the earth in a couple of months at most

Like dude, take a look at what continent has a northern giant jungle, with rivers winding thru it, UHHH definitly not africa, and that is primarily jungle, africa isnt primarily jungle first of all.. only ignorant people think that, like i said only 2 million km2 area of africa is rainforest/jungle, wich isnt alot concidering its size, the rest is mostly desert and dry climate. South america is has a rainforest/jungle area of over 3 times that of africa, its over 6 million km2 of area, and it also has dry areas and desert. So i think its south america, but people also think its a combination of both wich makes sense. The amazon and congo are some of the least explored jungle terrain in the world, in the 90s people thought there was a dinosaur in the congo lol.. But the amazon is rumored to literally have buried civilizations under all the plant growth, and its remote regions are just as unexplored and dangerous as the congo. Its the just the congo is a very dangerous area to visit alot of wars and stuff so theres that, while amazon has much more tourist activity. But it definitly has its unexplored areas, its very vast.
Sothoryos and Ulthos are Martin's equivalent of Tolkiens Rhun (east in general) and Harad (south in general), we will never know everything of the few lands we know and we will never know anything of the lands we only know by name.
I like to think those who live deep into the continent are very civilized but are very good at hiding away from would be colonizers. My theory is that the people of Sothoryos probably have some protection magic that make it hard for intruders to settle while simultaneously giving life to the environment. So plants, trees, and the animals and insects probably all work to protect the people there. However, I would love to see a show about the inner workings of their political structures and how the game of thrones may be played on that continent as well. And there would inevitably be more folks who look like me, so that would be cool too. It’s high time folks get privy to fantasy that is inspired by other areas besides England and the Nordic Countries. Some of the most fascinating fantasy stories take place on other continents as well. 🤷🏾♂️ And I trust George to do his homework…if he even lives that long to do more stories 😬
Agreed. Personally i think my Nordic culture has been done to death in fantasy, and often poorly copied. African fantasy is a largely untapped well of inspiration that could easily be used and incorporated in the fantasy genre. Just wish writers and movie producers had the balls lol
@@seanthegrizz3983 I think you are wrong on that account. People associate a certain "vibe" to medieval England. This is probably because the fantasy genre largely started in England. With your Tolkiens and earlier King Arthur. Its only natural to write what you know best, and every writer is shaped by his/her environment.
@@arawn1061 the fantasy genre did not start “largely start in England”. Like what are you even saying? There are fantastical tales that have been written in Asia, Africa, South America, and by indigenous folks for centuries. An example would be a the fantasy epic the “Enûma Eliš” which, get this, was written in ancient Babylon. Also, “The Tales of the Court of King Khufu” which contained many works in f fantasy was written in ancient Egypt… Now…That’s strange cause the last I checked, neither of those places are England. 💁🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️ Now, the reason why you can make such an inane statement is a direct result of colonialism and a conscious effort to eradicate other cultures. Please do some research to inform your limited worldview because we can’t even begin to have an honest discussion if the starting point is based in propaganda and historical inaccuracies. 🤷🏾♂️💁🏾♂️
@@benjaminjenkins394 calm down Kang. I get it. You wuz Kangz n shite. None of what you mentioned is the root of modern fantasy. I get you are insecure about your ancestors culture not being the basis of modern culture. I get it. But none of what you mentioned is fantasy. Its mythology. The fantasy genre has a specific start in western Europe. And Western Europe is white, which reflects in the characters of western fantasy. Now the fantasy genre has expanded since Tolkein. But when you consider characters ethnicities in fantasy stories you have to take into account the reality of how people looked. For example if you have a fantasy setting in "fantasy south Africa" you are not gonna have white skinned characters being common. Now modern fantasys roots are based on western mythology. And if you are living in the west thats what you are gonna see. The fact that you're ancestors lost your culture and had a minimal impact on the shape of western culture is not your fault.
Once george dies they are going to milk the series dry and probably explore every nook and cranny till people stop buying the books and watching the shows
People saying this place is based of Africa are saying it centuries old stereotypes that Africa's a huge jungle with underdeveloped humans with spears 😂 it's funny actually
Westeros = West Europe Beyond the Wall = Antartica Essos = East Europe, Turkey, Russia, Middle East, China Sothoryos = Africa, South America, Australia. Ulthos = Unknown
And following literally any version of this would have probably been more interesting than the same feudal knights and kings of every other fantasy story.

This is what HBO should have produced and call The Undiscovered countries.
Unexplored not undiscovered
Bro! Welcome back!
Please more ASOIF Content!!
So basically, Sothoryos is King Kong’s Skull Island, turned into a continent
Maybe we’ll see it in the following spin-off shows
@@doc.emmetbrown8584 Bigger chance in seeing it than the Winds of Winter
Definitely inspirations from the old erupean perception of African
Is the Winds of Winter coming soon?
It’s been 84 years already.
It bugs me how Valyrians didn't see 10k ships passing by their territory neither with naval patrol nor dragon riders or they let them be to see what would happen to them if they tried to settle in Sothoryos like experiment
The mouth of the Rhoyne had several river paths leading out of it. The Rhoynar followed one that did not go near Valyrian territory.
@@CivilizationEx I just took it that it was the territory and resources and most fit of slaves they wanted and not the women, elderly and children as they would be more trouble than they're worth. In other words, they had bigger fish to fry.
Great vid, thanks
Sothoryos i think is supposed to come off like the amazon and south america, one of the targayens spent years riding the western coast, aerial on dragonback in search of the southern coast/edge, and never found it. Thats alot like south america, very long western coast, and a southern coast line that basically doesnt exist. Part of the reason why the Targaryen was able to safely scout it, for years, without having to deal with alot of the horrors were that on its western side, its mostly mountains, juuuust like south america. She flew for i think 2-3 years aerially in search of its southern coastline and never found it, assumed it was endless. She had to land every once in a while during those years to feed her dragon and rest, the western mountains of Sothoryos gave her the ability to do that. South americas western mountains are also known to have a unique wind element from it coming off the ocean that keep things airborne for a long time. It just totally makes sense to me that, sothoryos is modeled after south america. Also alot of places in game of thrones first letter or prefix will represent its location, for instance westeros (west), essos (east), So-thoryos i think is named after south. like South america.
We know apparently that Planetos is smaller than Earth, so considering how fast a dragon flies I can't imagine it taking 1.5 years (1.5 to the most south they could reach, 1.5 back) to be able to at least see the end ocean, seeing as people like Amelia Earhart were able to do loops of the earth in a couple of months at most
@@notlurking2128 well, i think she primarily used the western coast to travel, but she most likely criss crossed it aerially a bunch of times, she said it was desert and jungle and mountains just that dont end, and i africa has only 2 million km2 area covered by jungle/rainforest, its second only to amazonia wich has 6 million km2 covered. Quite a difference.
@@profo4544 that makes alot of sense! I hadn't thought of her criss-crossing the continent
@@notlurking2128 Yeah, for some reason alot of people have been getting up in arms about me comparing sothoryos to south america, over africa. Like its a racial thing or something its wild, im like ok here we go, and i have to explain to them geography like a 13 year old.
Hasn't this been posted like 8 times or am I crazy? Swear I watched this 2 Years ago
This is an updated version of a video I made several years ago.
Sothoryos and Ulthos are Martin's equivalent of Tolkiens Rhun (east in general) and Harad (south in general), we will never know everything of the few lands we know and we will never know anything of the lands we only know by name.
Awesome, please do more asoiaf videos
Ulthos has big beaked people who can fly.
AHHHH I adore these
CivEx!!!
I always thought it was a direct reference to South America and the Amazon, with the huge insects, snakes, diseases, parasites, native tribes..
Amazing video as always!
They must be gods
The fact that you're ancestors lost your culture and had a minimal impact on the shape of western culture is not your fault.
what antediluvian horrors wait in the Cyclopean ruins of Yeen?
Sothoryos is basically south America, Australia and africa in one
why is everywhere other than westeros or pentos a hellhole
Greetings.
Sothoryos is Africa before discovery of malaria and other antibiotics.
So pretty much. Valyria is Rome, and ghis is carthage
I thought he already did this one
This is an updated version of an old video.
is this a reupload?
It's an update to an old video.
Too bad this area will never be explored by anyone
Once george dies they are going to milk the series dry and probably explore every nook and cranny till people stop buying the books and watching the shows
So basically that how togashi came up with the dark continent
I’m convinced it’s Skull Island…
Sothorys is basically Jurassic Park
Skull island of king kong
This continent is just Warhammer Fantasy with the lizard men, cultists, and foolhardy explorer hunters
People saying this place is based of Africa are saying it centuries old stereotypes that Africa's a huge jungle with underdeveloped humans with spears 😂 it's funny actually
Westeros = West Europe
Beyond the Wall = Antartica
Essos = East Europe, Turkey, Russia, Middle East, China
Sothoryos = Africa, South America, Australia.
Ulthos = Unknown
Yi Ti= East Asia i.e. China, Japan, Korea....
Great Moraq I'd say is India
no.
Westeros = UK
Essos = Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Russia, China
Sothoryos = Africa
Ulthos = Australia
Sothoryos is basically H.P.Lovecraft Island.
Sounds like Australia! Yeah being silly.
Obligatory comment for the algorithm

Ulthos... we don't know....
is the end game area
Sooo, looks like it’s a heaven for furry?
WAKANDA FOREVER !!!
Explore sothorios properly you'll find pyramids...
And following literally any version of this would have probably been more interesting than the same feudal knights and kings of every other fantasy story.
