Sothoryos is currently one of the more interesting places I've read about in the world. Recently, I've also taken an interest in far eastern Essos. I think west of westeros and east of essos are connected somehow especially north west of westeros, and there has to be white walker history un east of essos via this connection. East of essos also have similar kind of wall/castles made up of black stones. So I guess both are connected and we'll find out in the books.

No way. Sothoryos sounds way, way more fascinating, mysterious and awe-inspiring than Australia. Australia is just a vast, empty, open space. No great cultures, no lost civilisations, no ancient mysterious ruins, barely any forest, not even that much in the way of wildlife when you come down to it. Nothing but a few rock-paintings. Australia is basically like the world's largest car park, with nothing but a bit of graffitti, and fucking evil spiders. Basically, Australia is THE most boring place on Earth. The Summer Isles easily sounds like the best place to live in the Song of Ice and Fire universe. They live in a warm tropical paradise, they're civilized but can still defend themselves, they have a healthy celebatory attitude towards sex. Sounds much better than anywhere in Westeros.
I recommend wholeheartedly the World of Ice and Fire. The descriptions of faraway lands are utterly fascinating. My own hypothesis is that the First Men are from both Sothoryos, and refugees from the collapse of the Dawn Empire to the east. Then they crossed the bridge into Westeros. But House Dayne is said to have been in Westeros and Oldtown was founded before the First Men even arrived. So what's the deal here?
My two cents that First Men are from are from Essos they may have escape from the masters of Great Empire Of the Dawn. The Daynes and Hightowers are or were high noble class from the GEOTD. Now the difference two sets of people that Daynes and Hightowers were send to Westeros to supervise the capture the Giants. Westeros was set up to be a colony for the Empire. A great collapse happens to the empire that scatter the people from that Empire across Essos. Thousands of years pass and everyone just forget about what happens and their origins. Well the religion of Red The Woman, the priestess and the Starry Eye Wisdom Church have a some mythology what happened 5000 years ago or more. What happened?!! memories of mankind are very short or like very painful and the ancestors that experience the horror now wants to block out the horror of the past. GRRM explains that Westeros is in post magic era that they moving toward science and logic rather magic of the pass. I believe the religion of Seven have a big deal to do with it.
This is very interesting. I would hope that GRR Martin would expand on the world of GOT with stories about the people on these other continents. So much possibility there.
I wonder if Sothoryos isnt really as bad as people say it is, as in the areas around Sothoryos and Sothoryos itself are just wildly unknown by the narrators and they are going off myths and legends when they describe them. It would seem strange for one continent to just be home to monsters and bizarre creatures and diseases when westeros and essos are pretty much parallels to medieval europe and eastern/african kingdoms. Maybe Sothoryos is a parallel to south america or parts of africa? the basilisk isles could be sort of like the Caribbean with it being a place full of pirating and strange islanders (how europeans wouldve viewed them during the time)
The ending of GoT is even more hilariously bad when you know Grey Worm heading to Naath is supposed to be a happy ending, hopefully that butterfly fever doesn't kick the Unsullied's asses too hard
Im so glad you bring up Naath and the butterflies... I literally believe that me and one other RUclipsr are thew only people that actually remembered when the show was all sending the unsullied to Naath and how Missandei was like yeah I can take my boo there w me without even mentioning oh yeah 95% chance you gonna die of this butterfly plague babe and then they actually sail there at the end... to what.. die?!? Except they never even brought up the butterfly plague in the shows like wtf are they dumb?!? I wish more people seemed to remember this! Arg! Did you recall that when you saw it on the show??
My theory is the reason we dont know about ulthos is because it's the other side of Westeros, like China and France in the medieval ages, all they knew about each other were the names and rumours.
I really wish I was a writer for HBO. Ever since I heard of the story of Nymeria I wanted HBO to make a spin off. I have so many ideas for how the show would go
Jay Young But you wouldn't get a budget. Ideas are great but it takes tons of money to bring them to light. It might be better as an animated or CGI series
this just made me realize most likely grey worm and the unsullied died after they leave westeros since they were going to naath and most likely know nothing about the butterfly fever or even if missandei told him he wouldnt be immune like she was
@@thomasalvarez6456 Guals traded with the britians yes, but the romens knew little to nothing about Britain. I'm guessing sothoryos is set up as africa was in the ancient era. Little to nothing known after a certain point on the map.
All the worldbuilding surrounding Essos/Sothoryos and the areas in-between is incredible. Any section of these vast lands would make for an excellent setting for a video game (MMO, RPG, survival game, dare I say it battle royale/arena game, whatever), a book series, a TV show, a movie series, or whatever else... to the point where honestly, I feel like overall Planetos would be better if most of Westeros simply dropped into the ocean, leaving only Dorne+the Stormlands and Crownlands as an island, a few other scattered islands (incl. the Iron Islands) and then as a separate landmass, the far north beginning with a narrow strip of coastline south of the Wall.
The Summer Islands reminds me of the Philippine Archipelago especially the three main islands Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao which mirrors Walano, Omboru, and Jhala. Originally, the Aetas/Negritos (originally from Africa then migrated over for the next hundreds of thousands of years) were the first settlers in the Philippines before the Malay race. Different Rajahs, Sultans, Datus, Lakans, Panglimas, etc. ruled over their respective lands and often fought with their neighbors much like the Summer Islanders and their Prince/Princesses. The textiles are also colorful and vibrant just like them and quite interestingly, some of them were taken captive and sold into slavery much like how the Philippines was enslaved by the Spaniards for more than 300 years.
Is it weird that I have been sat for a good hour or so now, just watching every one of your videos, one after the other? So cool. I agree with the majority of comments, Westeros is boring, I need a show which explores Sothoryos and Ulthos, and the far east of Essos!
We have only seen game of thrones from the westeros point of view. I believe if we were to get another series focused on whats beyond the bone mountain, we'd see game of thrones from their perspective. I sense westeros is as a mystery to them as they are to westeros. fascinating stuff.
It's awesome to think of all the people around the world fighting living and the people we all know have no idea of all the great hero around the world. I hope this world keeps growing
Worst case scenario is that they'll have ships patrolling the coastline which might scare off any would-be slave traders. If Grey Worm captures any slavers, he might give them a choice of being on the island during the day or surrendering the slaver ship.
My yeen theory is that Yeen is where the blood betrayal happened. When the amethyst empress was killed and the long night started the magic was so strong/ evil that the forest refused to return
When I heard the descriptions of "Jungles, deserts, mountains; plague and disease ravage the continent; Remnants of an old empire along the northern seaborne coast (a la Phoenicia, Rome, etc.)", why did it sound like a stereotypical view of Africa? Even for a pseudomedieval fantasy setting?
T'Chara because it's supposed to be, except worse in that Africa has vast savannah, desert and rocky plains but Sothoryos is a combination of a continent personification of the Amazon with influences of Central Africa and probably Papua New Guinea.
Summer Isles resembles my country (the Philippines) geographically. We have three main islands (Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao). Luzon is the most populated like Walano.

Thanks for all the awesome videos you have made on GOT lore. Helping keep me sane as we go into lock down over here!
Agreed!
"You see those warriors from the Summer Isles? They have curved swords. Curved. Swords."
Cant thank you enough for this content! Its so fun to get a better perspective of the world he built! You do a fantastic job!
So this guy created this whole world with history and everything. That's amazing!
George.. please.. give us ANYTHING on Sothoryos. I NEED IT. A short story, a poem ANYTHING.
Sothoryos isn't pronounced South-o-ross, it is pronounced Soth-or-ree-oss
Thankyou
Can I just ask, how do you know this? Has GRRM said it during an interview or something?
In the books, it is sometimes written as Sothoros, but yes, George has used this pronunciation during interviews
grrm said announce it how you want

Considered yourself corrected
I wonder if Sothoryos isnt really as bad as people say it is, as in the areas around Sothoryos and Sothoryos itself are just wildly unknown by the narrators and they are going off myths and legends when they describe them. It would seem strange for one continent to just be home to monsters and bizarre creatures and diseases when westeros and essos are pretty much parallels to medieval europe and eastern/african kingdoms. Maybe Sothoryos is a parallel to south america or parts of africa? the basilisk isles could be sort of like the Caribbean with it being a place full of pirating and strange islanders (how europeans wouldve viewed them during the time)
Its basically Australia
Winds Of Winter the summer isles could most likely be based on the caribbean and basilisk isles the pacific islands
@@ritzroldennalpajora4742 Australia doesn’t have jungles or megafauna though?
By far the coolest place in A Song of Ice and Fire that we know anything about. I hope one of the prequel shows go to Sothoryos.
Can you please do history and lore videos of the Witcher's world?
My theory is the reason we dont know about ulthos is because it's the other side of Westeros, like China and France in the medieval ages, all they knew about each other were the names and rumours.
this naathi woman is looking naathicc 4:19
They need to make a game out of this. The world of Ice and Fire books is just brimming with potential.
I really wish I was a writer for HBO. Ever since I heard of the story of Nymeria I wanted HBO to make a spin off. I have so many ideas for how the show would go
Thing is we know everything there is to know about her. The wish to dramatize book scenes must not lose out to hammy acting
Pitch them to hbo
Jay Young But you wouldn't get a budget. Ideas are great but it takes tons of money to bring them to light. It might be better as an animated or CGI series
I will always love the image of a giant ape punching an elephant over.
this just made me realize most likely grey worm and the unsullied died after they leave westeros since they were going to naath and most likely know nothing about the butterfly fever or even if missandei told him he wouldnt be immune like she was
Wonder if all that shit is true or if it's just exaggeration and myth because of how unexplored it is.
That is a definite possibility, many romens didnt belive Britain to be real until Julius Caesar made his first invasion attempt.
Blue collar Yet they had traded before. This is the world of ice and fire many of the other tales are true. These aren’t any less likely.
partly, true, partly exaggeration,
@@thomasalvarez6456 Guals traded with the britians yes, but the romens knew little to nothing about Britain. I'm guessing sothoryos is set up as africa was in the ancient era. Little to nothing known after a certain point on the map.
But with all the messed up shit in the story, all of these things could be true
The textiles are also colorful and vibrant just like them and quite interestingly, some of them were taken captive and sold into slavery much like how the Philippines was enslaved by the Spaniards for more than 300 years.
most of the details in the book are mirrored from the real world. I love how GRRM played with his imagination
Is it weird that I have been sat for a good hour or so now, just watching every one of your videos, one after the other? So cool. I agree with the majority of comments, Westeros is boring, I need a show which explores Sothoryos and Ulthos, and the far east of Essos!
Bran should look into the history of Sothryos and Essos to discover its mysteries and wargs to lead the expeditions.
I caught a fever in Sothoryos once. You don't even wanna know how many cowbells it took to cure me
But if you don't cover Ulthos I can't fap properly.
Love these videos why create. Thanks for the time and work you put in.
Sothoryos is basically ARK: Survival Evolved.
Omg thats true
We have only seen game of thrones from the westeros point of view. I believe if we were to get another series focused on whats beyond the bone mountain, we'd see game of thrones from their perspective. I sense westeros is as a mystery to them as they are to westeros. fascinating stuff.
Curious to see why people pronounce it as "So-thros" when its clearly "So-tho-ree-os"
Vitor Oliveira And Grrm himself pronounced it as So-tho-ree-os.
Fucking hell don’t get your tits in a knot
It's awesome to think of all the people around the world fighting living and the people we all know have no idea of all the great hero around the world. I hope this world keeps growing
The way you pronounce "Sothoryos" makes my ears bleed
Same. "Southerows"
I assumed it was So-thor-ee-ose, but I could be wrong also. Just irks me a bit
what a sensetive bitch, the both of u
These videos are extremely entertaining. 👍🏻 thank you for all that you do.
The brindled men of Sothoryos sound like they were based on Neanderthals.
So do the Ibbenese
Possibly Homo Erecus. The earliest well known human species. Despite Homosassa Egaster being the first
@@covenawhite4855 Nah the Homo Erectus emerged from East Asia
Man out of all the places Sothoryos peaks my interest more than anywhere else. Maybe we will get one of the spin offs to take place in Sothoryos?
I prefer the CivilizationX pronunciation of Sothoryos with long O's instead of the short O in the first syllable.
Id love a detailed story of Nymeria and her travels that would be so cool
I’ve been waiting for this video since you mentioned it in the Entire Game Of Thrones map explained.
I would love a series about Sothoryos.
I know it’s post GOT but you’re telling me that The Unsullied are in for a treat huh?
Worst case scenario is that they'll have ships patrolling the coastline which might scare off any would-be slave traders. If Grey Worm captures any slavers, he might give them a choice of being on the island during the day or surrendering the slaver ship.
Naath & The Summer isles need a tv show!!! I hope its one of the 5 in development.
The Summer isles are all of the positive stereotypes medieval Europeans had about Africa, and Sothoryos is all the negative ones.
@@alexkahnum3529 So, by that metric, I'm guessing we're definitely not going to see it
The oddities of Yeen and Zemattar make it somewhat Aztec-like
Cant get enough of your vids! ♥
Love this !!!
Summer Isles resembles my country (the Philippines) geographically. We have three main islands (Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao). Luzon is the most populated like Walano.
It’s based off of the European colonial beliefs of Africa before exploration
Man, George really got creative with the creatures of Sothoryos.
I hate to be that guy but I can’t stand him saying “Southeros” like my man it’s very clearly So-thor-y-os. I love these videos and this channel don’t get me wrong but it just irks me
I enjoyed this. Great work. Thank you!
I’m so curious about Ulthos if only there was more written about it other than its name and location
I think it Australia.
just about every image of nymeria I come across looks outstanding, imo.
This is basically GOT version of Africa lol 😂
Combined with south america
@@OrDuneStudios More like Africa only. I think America would be part of the unknown world. Maybe in the far west.
@@OrDuneStudios No the author said the continents are based off of the geography of real continents. Meaning this one is based off of Africa, most of the world of GOT is unknown so a South American equivalent would be more west and not directly under Westeros.
we need a series where a maester/archeologist goes to sothoryos for deep ancient knowledge
Skull Island? King Kong lives there!
Perhaps we can eventually get a Sinbad-style character who explores the entirety of SoI&F's world.
I think GRRM uses all kinds of stories for his inspiration. Lovecraft, Tolkien and I think some comics. This is just a guess but the smiling knight reminds me of the joker. The night's watch oath sounds a bit like the green lantern oath. I know GRRM reads comics, just a guess
We need another 8 seasons about Sothoryos and another 8 for Essos and the same for all the other regions. What a glorious TV phenomenon it will be !!!
-Skull Island
-Literally filled with skulls
-Offerings to a Dark God.
*Deep Breath*
Blood, for the Blood God! Skulls, for the Skull Throne!! Let, the Galaxy, BURN!!!!!!
The Wildlings and Skagosi are basically Norscans
You as well... You will love the occult videos of a youtuber named "share his vision". He will reveal a magikal vid very soon that will teach people how to win money using spirits. He brings fantacy to reality. Some worship him. Some prEy to him. You will love his channel and his occult wisdom. Go to him.
I really want them to do a show set in sothoryos its filled with so much potential and mystery
8:51 I'm pretty sure that's not an accurate description for a wyvern at all. But maybe that's what it is in Martin's fictional world.
can't wait for 10000 ships series
i want to see those lands on tv
He made the music real quiet so we wouldn't notice that it's from Skyrim. Lmao.
You should have included Ulthos in this video
Dodging the bullet of people asking for a video about that continent
Because there is almost no source content
I’m not going to lie. This guy is obsessed with blood magic
Motherfucking velociraptors? We should set sail immediately!
