I found some stills stashed in my college's archives and wanted to take a swing at finishing them up based on what I remember from my parent's VHS version. Shame we got rid of our tape player and all the tapes that came with it :( (RIP Prince of Egypt, you will be missed) but who knows, Goncharov could be out there still...
ah the fact that the red scarf is the first vibrant colour we see on screen... heralding the blood that's about to spill... wrapped around goncharov's neck, flowing behind him, just like the blood will flow from him when sofia finally grabs the knife... expert level of foreshadowing. your restorative work is to be commended! so good to see someone taking care to preserve our cultural heritage

i love how red is a recurring color throughout the film: goncharov's scarf, the apple during the market scene, and, of course, the blood. it goes to show how in a world as bleak as this, the only possible form of emotion is one linked to violence and passion, as the color red symbolizes. Sin, represented by the apple and thus also by the color red, is wrapped tightly around goncharov's neck... inescapable.
Don't forget its the main colour associated with the soviet union

Thank you so much for posting this. I haven’t heard about goncharov in years and I was starting to think it was a fever dream from when I was little. I saw the movie too young and the ending still haunts me to this day. Glad to see it’s not lost media!
gosh the symbolism of this movie made me cry. it's hard to find movies these days that can intimately make you feel something deeper like this one
The lines “of course were in love thats why i tried to shoot you” and the response of “ if we were really in love you wouldn’t have missed” bring me to tears every time
