I, who live in Michigan USA, have heard Kamala mention her Indian mother several times. As to the drug war. I understand that we have to pay taxes to maintain the country and city we live in. However, since we pay road taxes, property taxes etc. for the running of basic amenties, why are we also paying income tax also? Why is the government charging its people on income they earn expending their blood, sweat and tears?? The only additional money the government should earn is penalise serious traffic violations heavily, increase bail charges for criminals, ensure disproportional assets are looked into very strictly and tax companies making profit above a rational limit set. Also cutting MLAS' benefits, travel and perks and taxing them depending on the number of cars, houses and land bought by immediate family. Just putting my layman's thoughts out there....

India should be as proud of Kamala Harris as we Americans are. Her mother is Indian.
This is probably one of the worst episodes of Pakli Sharma. It is high on opinion and rhetoric but low on facts or substance. She is pandering to an angry, English-speaking, urban population. What she does not say is that most of them don't vote, participate in the democratic process, or contribute to a solution. They are generally negative, act entitled, and high opinionated on what to do. The budget yesterday was definitely populist but what do you expect? A large chunk of those who voted in that last national elections chose freebies over good governance and fiscal prudence. No political party will chose to commit suicide for high moral ethics when a large minority of the population want freebies. However, this is not to say that the budget was devoid of any growth, employment, and long-lasting positiveness. The rant on taxes is a great example to substantiate my point. Firstly, direct taxes are paid not just by salaried people but also business owners, contractors, consultants, and retirees. The contribution of the second group is greater than the money contributed by the salaried class. Secondly, the contribution of direct taxes matches the contribution of those collected from the indirect taxation. Don't those people get any credit for growth and the utilisation of the tax collections? Thirdly, the taxation in India is much lower than counterparts in Europe, USA, or Australia. So, why are we expecting great development when our collections are lower and we are starting out from a lower base in terms of infrastructure. Fourthly, while the collapse of any infrastructure is a terrible waste of money, Palki seems to suggest that it happens only in India. There are many more bridge and building collapses in the development nations and China than in India. So, why is she not giving the context? Fifthly, direct taxation is pervasive in any developed country. Salaries, income, and indirect taxes are tools used to get more revenue. So, what makes her think that the Indian direct tax payer is somehow so special to not be taxed. Sixthly, if anything, the attempt by the government to provide tax breaks as small as this is stupidity. Tax breaks for the middle class is not appreciated no matter the quantum. Direct tax payers will only be happy when there is no taxation. Is this even practical. The other rant was on women calling India a patriarchy. This smacks a lack of understanding our history, culture, or reality, Firstly, the statistics she is narrating is only from the organised sector. What about the unorganised sector where women participation is high? Secondly, independent India gave universal franchise allowing women to vote from day one which was not done in any other democracy. In fact, the richest nations gave their women the right to vote just a few decades ago. We do not need to consider communist and Islamic nations as they do not grant equality to anyone except their own kind and less to women. Thirdly, long before the West, women held property, led nations, ruled territories, and fought wars in India. As times changed, women were given movable family property like jewellery and the men land. Now, she is suggesting, as the judiciary also is, that women should not only get jewellery and gold but also land. Palki Sharma is a wonderful presenter. I don't know who is writing her rants, maybe she does. It is ill-informed and reflects a very negative outlook. This may bring cheers to the audience she is attracting but this reduces this show to a reality showpiece. This is more dangerous than a China-supporting communist. Because, the communist is easily identifiable and their hollow points addressed. Her seemingly patriotic disposition masks the lack of informed analysis. She is fast becoming the Times of India of digital world-- low on analysis, pandering to an audience, and high on opinion. It is a race to the bottom that she should avoid. Please take this as a constructive criticism and not a general diss of the programme.
