Having reviewed the Square Strike wedge around two years ago, how do you think that they compare if you remember or still have it to re-test against this wedge club?
What would be interesting, for this type of video, is for Rick to grab a club member or random golfer to represent the 'average' duffer to see if it improves his/her chances of making better chips and pitches.
Agreed. I take his reviews with a grain of salt as Rick is ten times better at golf than I am so his results with the clubs he tests will be vastly different from what an average player might experience. He should have an average level friend or guest for also test the clubs so the viewers get results from both a pro level player and an average player.
what i did notice was that despite the distance control, the dispersion of your chips was very narrow, and as you mentioned, the accuracy. so once you get used to the weight of it and get a handle of the speed, it looks a lot closer to great than gimmick
Agreed. That dispersion was fantastic. AND, with those super thin lies on the fringe it got up in the air quick and stopped on a dime. That’s pretty stinking intriguing.
Rick hits the nail on the head at 6:11. Many of us are delighted to get the ball on the green, that is especially true of sand for me, but everyone I play with struggles with chipping/pitching and of course putting. Which all need practice to gauge weight/distance. But fewer chunks, blades and hacks would never be a bad thing. Cam
Hi Rick I’ve been watching your videos for like three years or so now and I love them! I’m 14 and just made my varsity high school team as a freshman and I just shot my best score on 9 holes of a 44 yesterday!! Thanks for all of the tips!!
I'm definitely buying this for my buddy for his birthday. He's the kind of guy that would rather putt from 20 yards off the green than grab a wedge. He even uses a putter out of the bunker if there's no lip. Hopefully it helps his confidence out.
From what I could tell...this club had some serious spin, making the shots stop quickly instead of running out like his other wedge. I would LOVE to have a club that stops the ball like this!
@@charlieodom9107 I agree disappointed Rick didn't realise this .. wanted him to be really aggressive with it try it out of tight lies deep rough . But guess to him the click bait title gets him a load of views soo
Hey Rick, for some of the gimmick clubs, where they are meant for higher handicappers, you should have a higher handicapper test them to get a good gage if it'll help!
I’ve been practicing my pitching and chipping. It’s made a huge difference in my game. It also taught me how to properly aim the face of the club, and how to get better ball strikes. Now my iron play is significantly improved because of it. Went to the range yesterday and all my irons were laser beam straight flight. 95% of my shots were off line by maybe 5 yards at the very most. I was aiming for the yard marker sticks and had quite a few hit them. They give off a satisfying ping sound since they are made of steel.
The wide chunky ones were to my knowledge popular in the 70's and I got to borrow one when getting my handicap, and when I asked where I could buy one I got it for free from my instructor, it's to this day my favorite club
I have a Lob and Sand slider years ago fro. Maltby. (60 and 56 degrees, respectively. ) they are about 2.5" sole width. Super easy to use well, consisyantly. Average duffers have jobs, families, stuff to do. Practice golf? Not so much. Clubs like this really do help.
Been playing golf now for about 5 months and was thinking maybe I just not cut out for golf but then I watched your video with Pete, mat and carter and thought oh maybe I’m better than I think. Thanks 🙏
Rick I love your videos man. Every time I watch one I either grab my bag and go or if I’m somewhere and can’t it makes me want to drop everything and go golfing.
I have an old "Great Escape Wedge" shaped like this! Such a fun club. Doesn't make it in the bag anymore but it was great for learning. Really helped with my bunker shots
Absolutely love your videos Always have but since I hurt my knee I haven't been able to play and these keep me sane! Surgery Friday and I'll be back at it when I have the green light! Cheers Rick thank you
It makes sense the height and less rollout though eh? Isn't that one of the selling points of a hybrid vs a long iron for example, it's easier to get the ball into the air because of the head design? It looks to me like this could work well for a downhill put that you have to fly a fair way, lol honestly the ones that didn't roll out the way you wanted, maybe a downhill chip one where you kind of either have to hit the hole or it's rolling past, this could stop it closer? I don't know, could be interesting!
Thanks for the video. I will still stay with my wedges, but i bet this club because of the additional weight and bounce would be great for out of the rough around the greens. It would give the ball a little more power through the taller grass. It looks like a nice club to give it a go for people that chunk wedge shots. There is always something unique that comes along. take care.
I ordered the club but have yet to receive it. I spoke to the designer of the club and he said you can take full shots with it. Looking forward to trying it out!
coming from me not a good short game person because i don't practice enough, last year, I would never buy this. I started to just go to what felt right and improve on that this year and I have 100% confidence now that I will not leave my chip short and that I will strike it well! Now I just need to perfect distance control, but I have shaved just from that about 2-3 strokes an 18 off my score!! So what I say is just focus on one thing not clubs, but ball contact. LOVE YOU RICK!!!!
Where there is a will there is a way to fat a shot. Just rewatched that North Hants course vlog (on Pete’s channel). That shot out of the ditch in Part 2. One of the all time shots!
Hi Rick ! Really liking all these test and reviews you do on all the clubs. My youngest lad Theo who's eight would really like you to do a test and review on junior clubs as he really wants a new set. Another question he would like answering is why do all these junior sets come with roughly only four clubs in the bag. Then you can't find additional clubs to add to the bag. Why is it you can not get a full set of junior clubs. Really hope this is something you can do in a video looking forwards to seeing it. thanks Neil & Theo.
Juniors don't typically generate enough club head speed to have normal 8-12 yard gaps between clubs that are 4 degrees or less apart like most adults get with iron sets that are 3-4 degrees apart. Only by making Junior clubs with gaps of 8 degrees or so (2 clubs apart), are juniors able to get the sort of gap progressions that adults get. Ping Prodi G irons are available for juniors from 5 iron through Sand Wedge, but most parents don't want to shell out $80 per club or more for irons that have 3-4 yard gaps, and most kids don't want to carry so many clubs. The missing odd or even irons can be added when juniors start gaining club head speed, but it often turns out that it makes more sense at that point to move them to adult sets anyway. By ages 12-13, most girls and many boys will have the strength to use adult sets with very light shafts, so I think it is somewhat rare to see really complete junior sets.

Hi Ric, Try comparing this wedge against the "One putt wedge" looks sort of similar and is supposed to be good from 100 yards in. I have had one for about 6 years and find it really good even out of bunkers. I enjoy all the videos you produce and hope you keep the output going. Best Regards,
Funky looking. I bought a C3i wedge at yard sale here in the states for $5.00. It is 65* loft and it is funky looking, but once I got used to it, it worked pretty good.
That grouping was amazing. You didn't have a feel for how much speed it takes for your distance result but those balls where sitting right next to each other and went straight everytime..I'd take that anytime over balls drawing out left and right and sometimes dead stops or fast rolls..Give me the consistency please
I've recently been using an xe1 sand/ flop wedge in 59° that's the same sort of idea flat bottom though not as pronounced and it's the best thing for those up and down shots around the green max yardage of maybe 35-40 yards if you swing at it but it's just so fool proof absolutely fantastic and got me my first ever birdie hole out from 30 yards along with getting me on the green for two other birdies the same day, never taking it out of my bag
1st hole on my local there is basically a bunker all the way around the entrance to green!!! This would be perfect for me and this hole as I always end up in bunker or on the 9th hole with my chip lol!! Keep up the good content!! Carnt wait to see the next vid
MacGregor Vfoil EZ Out sand wedge from early 2000s has a similar concept-huge sole and bounce angle. Highly recommended-works great out of bunkers also.
Rick, you HAVE to check out the Lovett wedges....the original "hybrid" wedges....I have a Sand and Lob Wedge and have had them for several years....I love them
I've just watched your mate review on chippers and you both came to same conclusion and he said would you sacrafice a place in your bag for one but I think the time it takes to get used to you could of got used to your normal club but good review both as usual.. 👍👏👏👏
I think it’s probably good for building confidence for switching over to a traditional wedge too. I could see how playing for a month with this and then going back to a wedge is good. Half of the struggle is worrying about hitting a bad shot and maybe this club could help build that confidence.
Reminds me of the 64° wedge I purchased. It's got a very big sole, like a Cleveland smart sole/Callaway sure out. Like you I found distance control isn't great, and I absolutely don't do full swings with it. I have used it for when I'm short sided and it does the job. It was only $40 us off of eBay.
Man, I hope that baby comes with a sweet headcover! It's gonna be an awesome club to have for the rare occasion that I miss a par 4 or 5 green from the tee with my hammer driver!
I would definitely consider one of these as I have the borderline yips from inside 50 yards. Anyone know if there is a UK supplier can’t find one online
I have a Taylormade Rossa Daytona blade putter and sometimes I just flip it around and use it lefty for those small chips out of the thick stuff that you need to just barely pop and stop. Works better than using wedges for me lol
Curious comment that this wedge is not made for bunkers. Similar ones are marketed specifically for bunker play. Don’t the same issues (digging and thinning) that apply to high handicappers when chipping and pitching apply in bunkers?
Back in the 90s there was a wedge endorsed by Gary Player called the Par Saver by Anvil Golf. It looked almost identical to this one and then there was also a wedge called the Alien Wedge which also looked like this one so it’s not a new idea. Good video though
I not sure but I think the alien is the highest selling golf club ever made,I have a club similar,a Ray Cook.I can hit it really well out of anything which has growth under it.
Rick it would be awesome if you did a driving and chipping test for the matte Callaway superhots and supersofts. Would love to see the results of a side by side comparison
The best chipper do have 37* take the Cleveland smart sole ( they do have also sand smart sole) . This chipper for me since I’m a terrible chipper cut 5 strokes on average per game and systematically I’m always use it inside 30 yards or so. My 50* is now Rest In Peace in the wardrobe.
Would be interested to see how this club compares to a "chipper"; a sort of putter with a lofted face that was popular years ago and appears from time to time?

I’ll stick with your tips on the 8-iron bump and run. I holed one yesterday with the 8, and 3 out of 12 in my warmup before my round too.
Ironically, the way to get good results out of this club is to swing faster, which is the same way to get better results with a regular wedge.
