I learned about what this plugin does from this video and just bought it in the black friday sale. Currently toying around with it. While playing with it I found a nice hotkey that might make 9:37 a little bit more comfortable: Ctrl. If you hold Ctrl while turning either the left or the right parameter it will turn both parameters simultaneously. *I just found out:* You can also just use *the right mouse button* to turn a dial and it will turn both dials (left+right) simultaneously! This way you can dial in the correct amount with stereo stuff from the getgo. Additionally you can hold shift for finer control, which can be turned up to max precision in the plugin settings (Burger Menu -> Global Settings -> Precision to the max). Thanks for your videos & Have a nice weekend!
I find it super useful to have a low pass filter on my master channel for this type of thing. Doing another a/b while listening to the bass and sub only is super helpful.
Killer plugin that you will use in every track you make, worth every penny imo. I got my copy on sale via Plugin Boutique and saved a few more pennies using my virtual cash. Can be used on your snare channel too, to help it sit nicely with the transient of the kick
great video as always!!! however just to be clear this is not phase rotation, this is phase shifting. phase rotation is shifting the phase of each harmonic by the exact same amount, whereas phase shifting shifts the phase of each harmonic whilst taking into account the wavelength of each harmonic :)
the lower the frequency of the harmonic, the longer the wave length. in phase shifting, all frequencies are shifted by the same number of degrees, whereas phase rotation will shift a higher frequency by a far larger amount of degrees than a low frequency. Stop it it into an analogy, a big wheel (lower frequency) takes longer to turn all the way around than a small wheel (higher frequency) hopefully this helps!
yes, as a REAPER user I can vouch for this. However, as a REAPER user who works at other studios sometimes, I find more value in using exclusively plugins that I can use in any DAW. That way, if need be, I can take it with me and use it that day in Pro Tools or something.
You can also achieve this by shifting the phase of the OSC, if your synth supports this, right? Atleast, this is what helped me tons when creating these superfast basslines such as psytrance needs.
once you put some vst, (EQ) whatever on the chain the phase is out again. i use this at the very last moment when everything is in place . much more accurate
@@DashGlitch It has phase rotation per Hz, in a graph, and auto mode, that sync one channel with another. It's called "Spectral Phase compensation". It synchronizes all instances of the same group. In theory it's for microphones, but nothing prevents you from using it for kick and bass, as long as the phase shift is the same (distance between microphones). I think this would be the method to follow, although I haven't tried it: It takes work to re-record each part that is different, if the distance or time between midi notes changes, it's like moving the microphones while recording and this is a bad idea... but it can be done with several midi tracks or by cutting the audio into several tracks, depending on how the distances between notes of both instruments change. The idea is to have an instance of the plugin on each channel. Once the plugin analyzes the audio of the group, it does its voodoo magic and stays that way, that's why you have to use many tracks with each series of notes that change in distance. I think editing a vocal track is more work. I don't know if I explained myself well. Manual ducking with fade in and fade out is also important, when the notes sound in unison, or when the tail or body of the bass drum interferes with the bass. The Baphometrix channel has some very interesting ideas on the subject of kick, bass and ducking, apart from other topics. Since there are few of this channel, I hope the recommendation doesn't bother you. I can edit the comment and remove this last part if you want.

Dash, I know that this video was sponsored by voxengo :), but for keeping it real... is this better in your opinion than faTimeAlign? or put it this way: would you recommend this over faTA? I know you were using that for quite some time for KB phase correction, showed off quite a few times...
For phase, yes it offers a few more tools, but I still use faTA for various other tasks, specifically lining up hardware and software channels in real-time 😃
@@DashGlitch I don't use any hardware synths, so that would be no issue for me... I tried faTimeAlign and I really liked it, but on sale it was still pricey, PHA at the moment seems like a really good deal. thanks :)
Hi Dash ! thx for this video ! one question, is that right that the sweet spot of the phase is at that place where the waveform of the Kick looks similar like the wave of the origin kick ? because of this reason you use this plugin !? Regards from Germany !!
Basically yes. When they are in phase the combined signal more closely follows the original contour of the kick. When they are 180deg out of phase, the resultant waveform is much lower in volume. It's quite subtle but once you get a feel for it, it becomes more obvious. If you're struggling to see/hear the effect, try synthesising (or choosing) a kick with a big beefy tail, full sustain or close too. It might sound like garbage for a track, but the idea is to use extreme settings to learn about the process, like you would for compression for example. You can apply a stronger and stronger fade out to train your ears/eyes to notice the effect with the kicks you are more likely to actually use in your tracks.
I dont know why, but I looked at the oscilloscope and as soon as I added this plugin it changed the waveform before I evem made any changes in the plugin itself. this doesn't happens with fasampledelay plugin
think of this as just delaying a certain frequency range while faSample delay delays the entire signal. Both have pros and cons, the former being able to retain transient on-the-grid a bit better imho
if I use kick 2, would this plugin help me aligning the phase with the bass, I'm asking this since in kick 2 you can pretty much move the tail of the kick until it aligns with the bass. BTW great video

@@shoppingcart238 pretty much yup. If you have plenty of time on your hands you can make the morph travel through some interesting shapes and end up with a super nice sounding sweep! Plus the artefacts that usually come with filtering are no longer part of the equation!
Whilst the phase relationship between kick and bass is very important, you cannot "see" groove or feel. The extremely subtle changes that affect a track's kick and bass ability to hypnotize and create a deeply psychoacoustic effect on the listener will never be seen on an oscilloscope. This is worth bearing in mind.
@@DashGlitch I have never seen or felt a groove with my eyes. The point at which overlap between kick and bass happens is very complex, highly likely 2 different frequencies (as your kick is dropping in frequency) so matching phase alone does not guarantee a hypnotic, forward moving groove. I have found you need to listen for groove and consider where in the kick and bass wave forms overlap.
@@DashGlitch Thx, I am not sure if I could do it or if it would help. If top level kick and bass was just matching phase every top level artist's kick and bass would sound the same. That is evidently not the case. I have "matched" phase and disliked the kick and bass many times over. In the end it always gets tweaked by ear because no one sees your oscilloscope on the dance floor (or anywhere they listen). Make it for effect and feel. (phase gets you in the ball park, that last 5pct that makes it spot on for your groove goal) I enjoy your channel by the way !
