How did Jackson find these actors and actresses? Fit them into the perfect roles. Stay so true to the story and make an unforgettable trilogy? And the actors and actresses! You can even sense and see it in their performances, the regard and respect for Tolkiens work. Simply incredible. Very rarely in this world do all things come together this way. Certainly glad it did...
He wanted Stuart Townsend or Russell Crow to play Aragon originally. I'm just glad they finally went with Viggo. I don't think the LOTR trilogy would've been great had they went with their original cast they wanted. Can't imagine anyone playing these characters aside from who they had. Lord of the rings was the perfect movie.
It's a shame that the Tolkien estate didn't see it that way. They had issues with LOTR, and when Jackson finished the Hobbit, Christopher Tolkien forbade Jackson from ever directing anything that had anything to do with Middle Earth. He called the Hobbit a "complete bastardization" of his father's work
Ian McKellen absolutely owned this scene. It was such a trip to learn he basically performed this scene opposite a tennis ball on the end of a stick XD
0:57 onwards. Everything from the dialogue go the visuals... It's the blueprint of high fantasy. Every single great fantasy story can trace itself back to that scene.

Which is so much better imo. Gandalf literally throwing shade that the Balrog cannot and will not pass since he’s a wielder of the Flame of Anor. The difference between the dark flames of the underworld, and the power of the Sun clashing which Gandalf wields will literally not allow the balrog to pass.
It’s best that Hollywood doesn’t try to remake it. They have a habit of taking older good movies or classics, remaking them, and then turning them into utter garbage. 🙂
One of my favorite lines in the first Lord of the Rings movie by Ian McKellen. And it's the best Lord of the Rings trilogy of the 2000's with excellent cast members like Elijah Wood and Sean Austin. Also, I would recommend Peter Jackson's District 9 if you can upload it along with Cliffhanger with Sylvester Stallone, the original 2004 version of the first Hellboy movie with Ron Perlman, the first two Terminator movies with Arnold Schwarzenegger, and those two Jean-Claude Van Damme flicks (like Universal Soldier with Dolph Lundgren and Nowhere to Run for instance).
The demon rushed into the room. Sword blazing, smoke whirling, it roared. An earsplitting, deafening roar. Gandalf spoke, seemingly unfazed. "You cannot pass!" Frodo called out from behind the standoff. "Gandalf!" The demon reared up, its whole body alighting with eternal flame. Gandalf knew what he had to do. "I am the servant of the secret fire... wielder of the flame of Anor." The demon reared up, a flaming sword materializing in its hand. Gandalf spoke once again. "Dark fire of [UNAVAILABLE! Flame of [UNAVAILABLE]!" A glowing white shield had taken form around Gandalf. The demon struck, to no avail, bouncing off the shield, which had now dissipated. The demon roared once again. "Go back to the shadow," Gandalf yelled. The demon took a step forward. Its fiery whip lashing the ground. Gandalf raised both his sword and staff in the air, and with an air of power, yelled: "YOU, SHALL NOT, PASS!" The wizard slammed his staff and sword into the ground, shaking the entire cave. The floor cracked, and as the demon tried to take a step forward, the floor crumbled entirely. The demon fell, writhing, screaming, into the bottomless pit below. Victory.
It was rumored that Sean Connery was offered the role of Gandalf but he turned it down because he didn’t understand the story or didn’t like it. Even though Sir Ian Mckellen did a phenomenal job as Gandalf, I still wonder how Sean Connery would’ve done with the part if he had accepted the role.

It's a great scene... very cinematic. When reading the books there are some similarities, but you can tell that Peter Jackson took some creative liberties with his interpretation of the Balrog. In the books, its size and appearance are merely described as "like a man, but greater." There's no mention of ram's horns or a skull-face with fangs. Wings are hinted at, with an emphasis on being a dark shape wreathed in fire. Personally, I like to think of them as being a fiery version of an angel... corrupted and deformed by Morgoth.
