I've been pulling trolley loads of shopping home for years, because I live in a small village and don't drive. Now I'm going to have to review that mode of getting my groceries done. Home delivery sounds like the best solution My arms hurt most when I'm putting a coat on or taking it off. I have to do it like I'm a doll from the 1960's that can't bend it's arms. Highly ungainly! :) I'm 56, so I don't want to push my luck. I'll put your advice into action. Thank you!

Maggie, I'm in the same situation like you! Years of pulling family's grocery uphill and even carry heavy bags on shoulder. Now I really regret. My right should is slightly out of position and every morning wake up in pain. Lucky to know the reason and find the right excercise for it. Wish you getting better!

My heart sank when you said you don't recommend military presses, because for years I used to get up every morning and do handstand push ups against the wall which is basically the same thing. It worked the shoulders and arms and even the abs because I had to tighten up the core muscles to keep my balance. Well, about a year ago I started feeling so much pain and weakness in my left shoulder that I had to quit and it has never really healed. Thought maybe I tore a muscle because that shoulder joint has a bony part that sticks out now whereas the other side seems to stick out less/have more muscle attached. I don't have noticeable pain unless I extend the arm out fully and try to push against something or if I reach across my body, especially over shoulder height. Then I can really feel weakness and pain. I notice it's much harder for me to dribble a basketball with that hand than it used to be. Kind of depressed because now I've even had to cut way back on pushups because I'm starting to get pain in the shoulder and tingling running down my arm through my pinky. Also feeling pain along the inner edge of the shoulder blades and noticeable winging. Not sure at this point what exercises to do because there is so much contradictory advice on the web. I'm 45 and I guess I probably need to bite the bullet and go see a physical therapist.

But seems to me you have a torn muscle shoulder cause your pain extended it. Did you go for surgery?😅😅😅

HAH! Yep! I've reaally done a number on my shoulder. I badly tweaked my shoulder getting off a dips bar. Injured it more by doing military press, then more by playing football (Soc) in goal. Neck pain, shoulder pain, trouble sleeping. It's been absolutely awful. Finally starting to get a grip with a load of exercises and rehab. Should have started doing this 2 years ago when it started getting really bad, probably due to Body Pump.

My injury was from 'over-head' pruning, which I did all day long, it wasn't until I went for my night shower that my shoulder locked up completely with excruciating pain.😣

I feel off my bike about two months ago and my right shoulder is still causing pain. I feel on the right shoulder. After the accident I couldn't lift my arm almost at all now I can lift it with weight. But it still is a little pinch. I'm going to work on the stretches and strengthening. I couldnt strecth at all. And I do sleep on that side but not for the past few months. I've had an X-ray just to see if it was broken. Nothing was broken thank God. I'm lucky I had a helmet on. Anyway neck and shoulder pain. Thanks Bob and Brad.

Hi Bob and Brad. You are my HEROES. 2009 I busted my shoulder lifting two 35kg dumbells. The 'crunch!' was audible in the room. I had it operated on and the shoulder was never the same since. 2 months ago, I found you online and realised it was a shoulder impingement. I performed your shoulder 'crunches' to the rear and the next day I could bring my arm up above my shoulder without going around in a big arc. Wow! Two months later, after daily shoulder crunches and your other exercise of push-ups (and push down) on the top of counters/chairs or weight racks, I'm at least 85% 'normal' and improving daily. Before I found you, I could not take off a tight 'T' shirt on my own. Now it's a breeze. I'm 65 and feeling better than I have felt in a decade. I'm lifting heavier again (carefully) and getting back some of my upper body strength and size. My hips I thought were worn out as I'd feel a grinding. Now I 'get' it's impingement there too and fixing that with your kneel on the floor and lunge forward exercise. Already 40% better. Your reputation and 20 million views are well deserved. I live in Singapore (formerly from Minnesota) but found you online in Singapore. Like James Bond, "Your reputation proceeds you, Mr Brad and Mr Bob." God bless you, gentlemen. I've shared you with others as well.

Over head pressing in the scapular plain is actually good for the shoulder because your strengthening the upward rotation of the scapula preventing it from becoming downwardly rotated. A downwardly rotated scapula will cause impingement. But you cant just start doing it when you're scapula is already downwardly rotated you have to start training the upward rotators separately and trying to progress on the dead hang first.

Thanks guys. I have shoulder pain all of a sudden left shoulder. I have been doing stretches everyday. Some days I feel ok. Others I have to work with it. I done an arm hang on a bar. Along with heating pad on and off yesterday. Feels better. I do have trouble reaching behind my back and seeing how far I can go. It's not easy. Hopefully I can manage this without surgery. I'm on lots of vitamins. The top of my shoulders is bony. Otherwise I'm in great shape for 53.

Thanks, great advice. I have impingement symptoms after that action you described (reaching behind you), actually caused by carrying golf clubs, reaching back to put my second arm into the carry straps and shrugging the bag onto my shoulder, if that makes sense. The (impingement symptoms?) however, only occur intermittently, as though it sometimes locks, especially when externally rotating the shoulder (washing my hair etc). Are exercises to strengthen the muscles - with bands etc, likely to help?

At work I used to lift clothing from racks I had to stretch to reach and pull up from the bottom of the hanger. We had to be fast and we would lift 30-50 lbs at a time to put away, sometimes lifting them back up to put away on the sales floor. I ground up my rotator cuff doing this for 10 years on my left shoulder. Yesterday I tried to pull my 65 lb puppy inside and her didn’t want in. He pushed while I pulled. Well I also turned 40 this year. I heard a snap and got sudden pain and ever since I cannot lift the arm unless I bend at the elbow. I think I tore it partially. I work at a desk job now. It just looks like there is nothing I can do for prevention. What a drag it is getting old! I know Red Green too!

I can overhead press & incline without issue, but flat benching bothered the top of my shoulder blade area above the collar bone. Tell me, how can I possibly do overhead press, a tougher exercise than bench press without pain? I can reach my left hand behind my back easily, but right side is much harder. I quit flat benching & am getting healthier I think. Pretty sure I have poor mobility compared to left side.

Just wondering about some advice - I hurt my shoulder by just turning over in bed, and was in just about screaming agony for several days. Pain going from shoulder down to hand. Couldn't move my arm more than an inch or so. Had an ultrasound which showed 2 big tears and lots of inflamation and other bits and pieces wrong in the shoulder. 2 docs said surgery was going to be the best option. Then had cortisone injection, and strong anti-inflamatories, and now it seems PERFECT! I just can't see how it can go from terrible to almost normal in a week - can the ultrasound have been wrong? Could it have been pinched nerve pain? THANKS for your wonderful videos! :)

It was a box. An evil cardboard box did it. The cat sleeps inside my arm where you put the pillow but still not working. I do have a therapist and I'm trying to be optimistic about it...

How would a bodybuilder safely develop their shoulder muscles??? It seems as if there is no safe shoulder workout :(

Great video. Wish I'd seen this a few months ago. So, after a rotator cuff tear what strengthening exercises are recommended?

Hi Drs, My problem is with my right shoulder and I can not lift anything. I can not lift my purse and I can not hold very much weight with my right arm and shoulder. I have pain all the way down my right arm and into my right hand. I can hold my purse with my right arm if I keep my arm at my side and straight but when I try to lift my arm while holding my purse to put the purse on the island or whatever that's when I cry out. I have to hold my right arm across my chest to keep it from hurting so badly. This has been going on for 5 months now. I have been doing the exercises with the bands on the door handle but I haven't been able to graduate away from the bands. I have been doing the exercises for about a month now. I'm a veteran and VA hasn't been very fast about getting me in with a physical therapist so I'm trying to help myself and alleviate the pain. What do y'all suggest that I do now? I will appreciate any instruction that y'all can provide. Thank you. ~Barbara
