    Great video. Regarding the gearbox, the 81R (Cutter) uses plain conrods and the 81T (Trimmer) uses needle bearings in the conrods. Clutch drum and Spur gear is also different between 81R and 81T as you found out.

    Very appreciate your video, helps me a lot bringing my old HS80 back to life. How much grease should I put in the gearbox after a complete gearbox cleaning?

    • @gorgeoutdoors
      @gorgeoutdoors  2 года назад

      STIHL recommends part # 0781 120 1109, an 80g tube of grease to squeeze in. For years, we would just use 10 to 15 pumps on the grease gun. It calls for gear lube, but it seems just like moly grease. I used moly.

    If the clutch is stuck to the drum due to corrosion, how do you separate the engine from the gearbox? Running into this issue now

      Soak it or heat it. Then pound it. Just don't break it. These can really hold on. Guys leave them in the back of the truck and water runs in there. Not the best design, but what can you really do.

    Hi Gorge, Brilliant video on The HS 80. My HS 80 Blades would not go up and down. I have stripped the machine following your video but before stripping I serviced the machine and it started on the first pull of the cord then the blades would not work. Are the screws holding the blades together have to be tightened to a special torque ? Also is there a method of adjusting the break cable mechanism. I live in Jersey, Channel Islands which your New Jersey was named after. Many thanks for sharing your video and I very much look forward to your reply regarding my questions. With my kindest regards and very best wishes. Toni. {Mr. T. M. Carré}

      A couple things it could be. Bolts on the bar need sleeves, or they can be over torqued and not reciprocate. You should be able to hear the engine bogging as it struggles to rev. Clutch or clutch drum may be worn out and just spinning and not engaging. You should be able to hear the engine racing and rev up easy. I believe there is a gear on the end of the clutch drum. I have seen those snap off. Some models have a thread on gear that can come off. the main gear in the gear box can be damaged, or not seated, or the rods not connected. The rods need to connect to the main gear, and the other ends need to connect to each blade, one top and one bottom. I have put them back together and got the rods not connected and had only one blade move, or no blade movement. It's an easy one to overlook. I've had them come in this way also. There is a screw or 2 in the gear box that holds and aligns the bar, that can be in wrong. Take the gear box cover off and rotate the main gear with a flat head screw driver. Insert into the gear grooves and pry it around. You should be able to watch everything in motion. Might have to hold it down with your finger to keep if from flying out.

      @@gorgeoutdoors Hi Gorge, thank you so much for your reply. Your answers to my questions wear very good but did not solve the problem I had. I have taken the gearbox apart and cleaned all the old grease out plus cleaned all the parts to the gearbox. The parts are in very good condition. I also stripped the cutting blades, sharpened the same and cleaned all the parts so they wear spotlessly clean reassembled them plus fixed them back on the gear box and they work fine. it was the clutch break that was stopping my blades from osculating so I took the break cable off and I wedged the mechanism clutch break open with a piece of wood and the cutting blades worked fine. I have taken the handle apart and tomorrow I will have a look to see if the cable is snapped in the sleave. At the same time I will renew the throttle cable. I have ordered a new clutch break cable and it will arrive mid August. Very hard getting parts where I live. I have found out the tork setting for the the nuts and bolts on the cutting blade assembly which is 5 on the newton scale. I will let you know how I get on when my cable arrives. Once again many thanks for your valued help it is very much appreciated. With my kindest regards and best wishes. Toni 👍🏻

    I had my Still HS 74 sitting outside for a while and the blade does not move while the motor is running. So far I have put in a new carb. and when into the handle and fixed that, and now I am working on the blade.
    The star gear the small one does not spin by hand, I am pretty sure it has rust in there, do you have a video showing how to fix that as well?

    • @gorgeoutdoors
      @gorgeoutdoors  Год назад

      Sounds like it may be rusted up, broken clutch, or broken link rod to the gear. I would pull everything apart and clean it. I assume re-assembly would be very similar to the video.

    • @gorgeoutdoors

      It should tap out with a small punch. I recall it being orange in color. There may be a screw in the bottom.

    Great video! When rebuilding the carb, what did you set the high and low speed screws to? Cheers

    • @gorgeoutdoors
      @gorgeoutdoors  2 года назад +1

      I try for factory settings. About 1 turn each. Most covers show the recommended carb setting. Easy to start with smoke and lean from there. My tuning in the video was on generic side.
