Stihl HS56C Hedge Trimmer: Gearbox and Blade Repair

- My Stihl hedge trimmer blades bound up and wouldn't stroke. I couldn't find any debris causing the problem, so I tore into the gearbox. I ended up finding worn lobes on the spur gear. The worn lobes reduced the mechanical advantage (or leverage) the gear was able to apply on the blades during rotation. I also found one of the blades broken at the driving end. I repaired the break and built up the edge with a welder. A grinder and file got me back to size. I hope you'll find this repair useful if you come across something similar.

After installing the blades and installing bolts, the blades would not stroke. It wasn't the nuts that were too tight. The engagement of the blades to the gear box wasn't quite perfect. Off and on time and time again. Then I just pulled the large gear ou, fitting it into the blade holes to see that they fit perfectly, then I installed that all important end into the gear box knowing positively the large holes were aligned onto the two circle gears. I don't do this that often, but I do thank you for this great insightful video. It kept me out of the repair shop. They could've charge me a full hour for a 10 minute repair.
If the blades won't move, it could just be brush sapp build up. I just spent 2 hours watching videos on major repairs hoping to fix my HS 87. The motor was running fine, but blades were frozen. I finally got the idea that they gears might be stuck together. From now on, when I spray after trimming I will be sure to spray the back side of the blade where there are no teeth. The HS 87 doesn't have teeth on both sides, so I have previously focused the Stihl cleaner on the teeth only, and run it for a little while. To fix, I loosed the screws holding the two blades together with a T25 and 8mm socket wrench and used a tiny screw driver to separate the blades. I then cleaned between the blades some. I did not even need to take the blades entirely off.
Your video was excellent! I have a second set of blades and swapped them out. I used your video to reacquaint myself with the disassembly/assembly of my hedge trimmer! I love when I perform my own repairs. There's a sense of accomplishment and empowerment when I do so! Thanks!
Great to watch you diagnose & fix the problem - I think you're very clever !
you have to fully tighten them up and the blades will work fine - that's what the little stand off shims are for. They allow for appropriate torque to be applied, 7Nm to be precise :)
Great vid just suggest you add a dremel to your toolbox would have been useful for smoothing out the inside of blade connection
I like to use high temp grease or white lithium because the gear box creates a lot of heat

Would it be wise to clean the transmission gears and body parts with a degreaser periodically and repack the unit with high temperature Grease. And if so how often? Every couple years. Or after extended use? Preventative maintenance goes a long way. Just a thought ...
Good for you getting it to work again but just how long will that repair last? Is the welding wire repair as strong as the original steel material?
No it's not. It gave me a little more life, but ended up buying blades.

Nice anvil! What size is it, where'd you get and how much?? I've looked a long time and can never find one. A good one isnt cheap yet for their usefulness they get snapped up quickly

What type of grease are you using there?
Is it really even necessary to buy the stihl grease or is any high temp grease ok, like the type I use in my zero turn spindles, etc?
Yeah, this is just a generic heavy equipment grease. Should be good with whatever you have.
looks like she had some use on her. was it greeeesed at interval, 20 hours repack gear box and sharpen blades?
I bought it on Craigslist from a commercial landscaper.

Where were you able to order the spur gear from?
I had to order it from a small gas engine shop that sold Stihl.
@@MasterJacks Ok thanks. I ordered mine from Ace Hardware locally. I shredded my gear using it on stuff that was too thick.
where can i get the whole transmission for this model, i have one
I've had a hard timing finding parts. It's more common over in europe. I've had to get all my parts from the local small engine shop/stihl dealer. Not cheap parts!
that mean a cud take the transmission from a hs46c an put it on me hs56c
