During WW2 before starting some aircraft the ground crew had to turn over the engine to eliminate hydro lock before starting the engine. This was due to oil leaking past the rings.
Thank you I will look him up. This sort of thing is great especially when you’re a disabled dude and you’re not willing to give up lol! Just bought an older Honda mid tin tiller.
Pull the fuel pump diaphragm and hold it up to a bright light, I suspect you will find a hairline crack in it. The crack will pump fuel through the impulse port into the bottom end of the engine causing the hydro-lock. I've replaced several units under warranty due to the connecting rod being bent. The issue is caused by the carb body casting not aligning with the cover casting. The constant flexing of the diaphragm against the mis-alignment of the castings causes the crack. I've brought this issue up with my distributer in Missouri, as well as Stihl corporate in Virginia Beach when I was there for training recently. This issue is often mis-diagnosed as a leaking needle because the carb won't hold pressure when tested via the fuel line connection, put you thumb over the impulse port on the carb and it will hold pressure. Thank You.
Cousin bought an old mid to late 80's early model Stihl 021 saw. It ran, but not well. Changed the fuel line, put a modern style 250 tank vent on it, then looked at the carburetor. WT-215, the metering diaphragm was put on upside down. Gasket was glued to the top plate, diaphragm was still good, but the gasket needs replacing. I've been through carbs, refurbishing them, never seen that before 🤣. Buying a K20-WAT rebuild kit today for it. Afterwards, it should run like new as the cylinder and piston look practically new and it has a LOT of compression. There's also a carb adjustment kit on Amazon for around $20, has every driver for carb screws, even a Stihl flat screwdriver, picks and brushes as well as two metering lever height gauges for Walbro and Zama. I used the Zama gauge on a brand new, from Stihl FS 56 RC-E carburetor, the needle lever was so low, had to bring it up.
Hydrolocked!! Got it right off the bat.😁 And Mower Medic is cool. Donyboy is very good as well. Oops, almost forgot Steve's Small Engine Saloon. One quick tip. Use a drain pan whether outside and especially inside. You don't want to kill your grass by draining fuel on it, and you don't want raw gas on your work bench. Could accidentally ignite if there's a spark of some kind. Gas fumes hang low to the ground and hang around even on a work bench, and ya never know. Good vid. Like school. Stay safe.👍
This is why I have 2 handheld battery blowers for driveways, sidewalks and patios. I still have my Echo PB9010T and Redmax EBZ8500 for everything else.

Those bg56 carbs are famous for bad check valves in the purge bulb circuit, a failed check valve will cause flooding. Also they have an accelerator pump, like a ms200t that fails. I usually replace those carbs with knock offs
I was able to push a piece of fuel hose on my hi/lo screws and adjust them with no damage. I now have the correct tools to adjust mine from a set like you show here.
I had this problem with my BG 56C. It was the fuel tank vent. I removed it and cleaned it. It is seamed in the middle and I took a razor blade, opened it up and found one of the clear diaphragms with small center holes had it's hole plugged. Used a small needle to unplug. Put the vent together, checked for airflow thru it by blowing into it and reinstalled. worked. Yes, I can taste gas as I'm writing this. :-)
Excellent, just what I needed. I got an Echo doing the same thing but leaks out the carb intake and onto the garage floor. It does have a vent thingy with a hose attached to the gas tank, definitely will check that first before moving on to carb. Thanks Chick!

That was pretty cool of with the blower and stuff I never thought about the diaphragm things like that getting stuck and junk I have mentions sometimes about leaving them in the heat or out in the sun is not good
I spent 2 hours working on a maryama string trimmer carburetor. I've rebuilt the carburetor before. I finally said forget it. Found one online for 16.00. I fixed that thing. It works better than it did. Sometimes it's better to just buy another carburetor. 16.00 and free shipping. My old string trimmer is good as new.
I have a hitachi/tanaka blower that always empties the tank when sitting. I don't see any tank vent, maybe it is in the carb somewhere. It does run fine but will stall after a minute or 2 at full throttle. It will start again after opening and closing the gas cap.
that has a vent made into the cap which has probably fallen into tank. and as far as emptying while sitting unless its bloody hot where its stored pressurizing tank then its your needle is staying open flooding the engine.
I had bunch of riders last year that had gas filling up crank case and cylinder from fuel shut off in carb staying open but 20 years of using stiihl blowers commercially never seen this issue.
Used to be that if they used gravity feed they would use an updraft carburator. Leave the shut off open and have a sunken float, and it still can't fill the engine with fuel.
I jut bought two gauges for setting the lever height for the needle valve . One is for Waldron the other for Zama . The height o the lever according to the carb manufacturers is very critical. I also had a Stihl blower thatI had let my neighbor use . It would start but not rev up after he used it . Turns out he pushed the primer too many times ,hydro locked the cyl and when he yanked on the cord sheared the integral flywheel key. The new flywheel was 85 bucks so rather than spend that much I put some coarse lapping compound on the tapered shaft put the flywheel on in the correct position and tightened it down. So far it has held up for the last 10 years . I had a rough time getting down to the cause of the won’t rev up issue
This is why I store my tools with fuel removed and fuel tube ran dry. Cuts done on corrosion and pressure. Worth it. If using it often, store it cool as possible.
I had the same problem with my BG-86. I ended up just putting on a new oem carburetor. Now, instead of the fuel pushing into the cylinder it just leaks out of the machine completely and ends up in an oily puddle underneath. I’m going to take a look at the tank valve and maybe just replace it. I live in Arizona, and it is 115 here. By the way, after the new carb the blower runs really great, but that Stihl gas is very expensive to just end up on the ground.
Also have to mention that I was working on my echo string trimmer yesterday just cleaning it up. I actually pulled the spark arrestor screen off the muffler made sure it was clean. Guess where I learned that. Thanks again
I have the exact same tool kit and i added an A-Circle screwdriver to it for Craftsman cultivators,Senix and other equipment with the A-Circle needle screws.
You can use a yellow wire butt-connector to adjust the mixture screws. GENTLY push or tap the connector onto the adjuster head and once it is on good, you can turn it with your fingers.

Hello Chickanic. I love watching you doing small engine repair. Glad to see there are strong self sufficient women like yourself out there. Happy Fourth of July weekend.
been watching your videos for awhile now. just helped me with a problem. been doing some chain saw carvings a lot since Christmas last year. have made about 10 bears, 10 owls, three eagles and a couple turtles so far. well for Father's Day was making Dad a 36" tall welcome bear and my main carving saw (240 Husqvarna) started running poorly.lack of power mostly. adjusted the carb and got the job done, but still not running great. today started another owl and the same problem again. awhile ago you had a video will a Stihl blower or trimmer and found the muffler screen all carboned up. So took out the screen on my saw and found it almost completely plugged up. cleaned it up, put back together and a little carb adjustment and running great again. some of the problem is that doing carvings you are only running the saw at low RPM's about half the time. sorry, this got so long, but thanks.
I have a blower like that and have been keeping it in my truck. Very good informative video. The last time I checked the gas after being in the hot truck it was under very high pressure and blew out gas. I am lucky it did not flood out like the one in this video.
I have a Stihl BG86 and when I got it home the hi side was a little off and I wanted to adjust it but none of the tools in those tool kits you can buy off Amazon fit the hex head of the newer Stihl machines. I stopped buy the place I bought it from and they told me that Stihl will fine them $10,000 if they were to sell the special tool. They wouldn't even show it to me. I ended up using a blue butt connector and pushed it over the head of the screw to adjust the hi side. The special tool is somewhere between a 4-4.5mm hex. I think this is total BS but apparently Stihl don't want end users making any adjustments to their machines.
Thanks for the info about using a vehicle to jump start a mower. I even went online to buy the jump starter. Most of these will not start my Duramax. Thank you so much for the information that you share with us.
Yes. Last year my brother 5yr Tanaka did it carb was leaking gas in the engine, He took his to the shop. The same week mine started doing it. I use mine commercommercially. Mine was 6.5yrs. The dealer doesn't sale or service them where I bought them at. I replaced the carburetor. Running like a champ now. He got his back not fixed & the guy charged him somewhere near 85 bucks with brand new wrong spark plug. I changed his carb too. Wouldn't pull because spark plug was too long hitting the piston. I took my plug installed it in his, 1 or 2 pulls it starts. I did it for free
Remember, she has to break it down so people that wouldn't know what hydro like is. I raced boats for decades, more than once it blew over backwards while topped out, engine went under twisting close to 10k rpm, rods looked like a lightning bolt qll bent and crooked, crankcase and block was full of spider web cracks, fuel pump, carb and ignition was all that was salvageable off them

I've had 4 strokes dump the tank into the crankcase through the carb, but not 2 strokes - and I haven't had any trouble with it since I switched to non ethanol.
Love your channel, but may want to make sure kill switch is off when turning over any flooded motor, ive lite 1 before doing that. Scared me but no damages done.
WD -40 when trying to remove gaskets without breaking them works most of time , I had a friend a long time ago he used WD-40 on the new gaskets when ever he would build a carburetor I've never forgotten that . I tried it on a 750 doulbe pumper carb I purchased got the bowl gaskets loose and reused them it had been sitting so long the pumps were hard in it I was replacing them anyways. So 41 uses :)
OK. Great video. I had exactly this same problem with my leaf blower. My question is that you mentioned to check the functioning of the gas tank relief valve. How do you do this? Thanks.
I always ground the spark plug cable regardless if it has a kill switch or not before pulling on the rope with the spark plug removed ☺️( I once set a mower on fire 🔥 because the spark plug wire was resting near the metal cooling fins of the spark plug hole 🕳️🤪! 11:23
hi I wanted to mention I had similar symtoms with an MS 391. after a lot of work the problem was solved by taking the after market decompression valve with an OEM. this solved pulling issue

During WW2 before starting some aircraft the ground crew had to turn over the engine to eliminate hydro lock before starting the engine. This was due to oil leaking past the rings.
Not just ww2. Still done today on the yak for instance. Any radial engine can get oil and fuel in the lower cylinder.
The Mower Medic is great! I love his content. He has great quick tips. The comedic stuff is brilliant too. 👍👍
Thank You.
Spot on, although I don't see it to often with blowers. I do have a pile of HS 82 hedge trimmer carbs we've had to warranty.
Stay safe.👍
Taryl fixes all is pretty cool too. They do goofy entertaining skits also. A lot of cool restomods too.
This is why I have 2 handheld battery blowers for driveways, sidewalks and patios. I still have my Echo PB9010T and Redmax EBZ8500 for everything else.
I like that you make reference to another RUclipsr. I will check out the mower medic. Thanks to channels like yours, I have learned so much. I just started a night school course on small engine repair. It is more for hands on. As well, I can bring any small engine tool into the school lab and work on it with some teaching assistance. BTW, the mower medic is now at 110k subscribers.
Really like how you face the machine to the camera while doing the repair from behind! Not the easist but the best for seeing the repair!
Thank you for taking time to post these very helpful videos,
Lets not forget the best...really..donyboy73 great mechanic and humble too..canadian
Mower Medic is the man!! And you rule too!!
I’ve long subscribed to Jeremy’s channel. As I potter about I copy his Tx. Accent. “ Do not lose it !!! “ my favorite.
Excellent, just what I needed. I got an Echo doing the same thing but leaks out the carb intake and onto the garage floor. It does have a vent thingy with a hose attached to the gas tank, definitely will check that first before moving on to carb. Thanks Chick!
I was actually amazed the other day when I realized Jeremy wasnt up past 100 k yet. Chic is true on him tho. AWESOME personality and goes the extra mile to respond and do his best to get ya running again. Especially without being on site going off what someone has diagnosed. The patients one must have I tell u. Jeremy has a bag full of it.
So nice seeing a woman taking care of business...I have an echo es250 the cord only pulls freely when I take the spark plug out. Any thoughts? Thanks subscribed and liked.
Thank you for the tip on MM1. I have been subscribed to him for a while and Jeremy is a great mix of repair, humor, food, and small animals. Always worth the time to watch.
Bruce’s Shop always reminds us that spilling gas is an important part of any repair.
I spill daily! LOL!
@@Chickanic you and Jeremy have helped me to up my game and not dread the 2 stroke. With my $7.50 Auction Homelite antique I cleaned the Walbro carb, replaced the fuel lines and paid $8 for a new gas cap, and added the $44 Shindaiwa 400 Speed Head and I’m rocking and rolling the weed whacking now. Thank you for your content.
I’ve been watching your videos for a couple of months now, and I just realized I hadn’t subscribed yet. So, here ya go! One more for the number. 😎 You are really clear and concise, easy to understand, and your camera angles are all good for clear visibility of what you’re doing. Between you and Taryl, I’ve got my repair videos covered.
Dear Chickanic, thank you for all you share! My niece and S-I-L just moved just out side of Bentonville and my sister lives in Mena, AR. Your videos are truly incredibly well done. You know you stuff! Thank you for sharing.
It's fun to watch and learn from your videos! Funny too sometimes! Thank you for your efforts in making these educational videos.😉💕🇺🇲
Ive got a bg86 no problems!
Anyway yes She's a gorgeous mechanic!!❤
I had this happen to my Echo-powered Mantis tiller. I ordered a cheapo $15 China carb off amazon and saved the original Zama carb for a later rebuild.
Everyone should be that way in life
Also have to mention that I was working on my echo string trimmer yesterday just cleaning it up. I actually pulled the spark arrestor screen off the muffler made sure it was clean. Guess where I learned that. Thanks again
I’ve done loads of carbs but still find things to learn. I love how thorough you go when working on them. Great job Bre. 👍🇬🇧🔧
I have the exact same tool kit and i added an A-Circle screwdriver to it for Craftsman cultivators,Senix and other equipment with the A-Circle needle screws.
yes I run dry for storage all small engines, snow thrower, chainsaw , blower etc.
I use a Dremel tool with a cut off wheel to slice a groove in the end of the needle then use a flat screwdriver to adjust the high and low mixture.
You can use a yellow wire butt-connector to adjust the mixture screws. GENTLY push or tap the connector onto the adjuster head and once it is on good, you can turn it with your fingers.
Thanks
Excellent video, many thanks, helped me to fix the BG55.
My hack before getting carb adjusting tool was to cut slot in top of adjusting screws with dremal cutting wheel
next week on Chickanic: How to avoid brown patches on your lawn!
My grass is terrible! 😂 nothing but stickers and weeds. In the future we are covering the whole thing with new soil.
Go easy on her brother! But hey she took it in stride 😁
@@Rob_1776 Hey my yard looks worse than that! There are brown patches all over where I spilled gasoline, and "cleaned" out flooded engines
Get farming with Duffy Ag on RUclips, Chris will spread some liquid cow 🐄 manure on your lawn, that will make it take off. Also Chris does a lot of repairs on older farm equipment and is the expert for Delaval robot cow milking stals
Same thought ofc I am watching this a week later... one of the best comments for a laugh!
Electrical butt connector can sometimes be pushed onto those adjustment screws when heads of screws are damaged or you do not have the correct tool.
A strip of dead grass..."Bre was here"!😂😂
Exactly what I was thinking, at least shoot it out onto the driveway and it will evaporate quickly. 🥵
Thanks for the info about using a vehicle to jump start a mower. I even went online to buy the jump starter. Most of these will not start my Duramax. Thank you so much for the information that you share with us.
I like your show n u r great very few women know wat u do thanks for the knowledge of small engines, I love working on them to, n like the tshirt
I just subscribed to the mower medic, thank you. He's at 100k now!
That engine was what is called "Hydro locked" an engine that can't turn over due to the cylinders being filled with a liquid.
This can result in twisted and bent articulating rods in lower cylinders. Always turn the prop by hand before starting a radial! 😁
I raced boats for decades, more than once it blew over backwards while topped out, engine went under twisting close to 10k rpm, rods looked like a lightning bolt qll bent and crooked, crankcase and block was full of spider web cracks, fuel pump, carb and ignition was all that was salvageable off them
You Sir, are correct! Great comment! Peace
Even though she didn’t name it. I’m sure she showed the exact cause. Wasn’t that hard to see.
Best hand held blower on the market for years.
Its called hydraulic lock, see it mostly in push mowers from tipping them on their side without pistion on top dead center
Great to see a lady making equipment videos keep up the great content.I always take the muffler off two cycle equipment off and use a blow torch to clean em.You may find useing electrical crimp conecters to adust carb jets. All the best to you. From two dogs small engine repairs Tottenham London England
I've had 4 strokes dump the tank into the crankcase through the carb, but not 2 strokes - and I haven't had any trouble with it since I switched to non ethanol.
I do have an endoscope and a pressure tester and a multimeter
Love your channel, but may want to make sure kill switch is off when turning over any flooded motor, ive lite 1 before doing that. Scared me but no damages done.
Love your videos, and love the mower medic videos too! Thank you for sharing your knowledge, us DIYers really appreciate it 🫶
WD -40 when trying to remove gaskets without breaking them works most of time , I had a friend a long time ago he used WD-40 on the new gaskets when ever he would build a carburetor I've never forgotten that . I tried it on a 750 doulbe pumper carb I purchased got the bowl gaskets loose and reused them it had been sitting so long the pumps were hard in it I was replacing them anyways. So 41 uses :)
I love working on small engines and i have invented a spring rewind tool for the pull start and it take less the a minute .
Good Info 👍 Most Likely The Vent
As A Force Of Habit I Always Remove My Fuel And Leave The Fuel Cap A Little Loose After Draining
hi I wanted to mention I had similar symtoms with an MS 391. after a lot of work the problem was solved by taking the after market decompression valve with an OEM. this solved pulling issue
update replacing aftermarket with an OEM DECOMPRESSION VALVE
