Sod's Law that the water / coolant pump failed a few days before you went away, but on the other hand, fortuitous that it didn't fail while you were away. I'd say you've earned your break 😆
From experience, it is far better to discover your water pump is dead on the parking lot than having it seizing, with belts snapping and wreaking havoc under the bonnet when on the autoroute.
I feel your pain after your upbeat previous video Richard. You'll win your bout with it and end up becoming one of the UK's specialists on the complex C6. Impressed by how your determination won through in the end after a very long day.
Oh man that's such a shame you have to take it apart again. Water pump is nothing but wear and tear item, still surprising it lasted that long! I don't trust any accessories in my cars for longer than 6 years - I change everything together with my timing belts
On the bank holiday weekend, I fitted a new gearbox torque mount to my Saab 9-5, along with spark plugs, oil/filter, thermostat, new coolant and marvelled how smoothly it drove. Until tonight when I hit an effing crater in the middle of the road and now it's shaking like a good thing. I shall treasure those last few days..
From my point of view, you have to find the silver lining on the C6 cloud. That is that you know how to work on it and it failed where you can get it to your garage to fix it. You are right about the age of the vehicle and such. When vehicles get on in years, they tend to have parts fail. As long as you keep up with it, they are lovely. A Hip, Hip, Hooray to you for persevering. You can do it!
This is a testament for small-engined cars if ever I saw one. Hang in there Rich! We all suffer vicariously through you. It will all be worth it, I'm sure. Take care & stay safe!
You have got to be kidding!!! Mate enjoyed your reminiscing but what the hell!!! Cant believe this has happened I'm crying for you. Nice scar to carry for a while by the way. All the VERY BEST my heart is with you 🇦🇺
I own a petrol one and its not that bad to be honest, my repair shop haven't told me to GTFO with it and I've hadn't had much troubles with it in ~6 years. I believe that even looked after diesels wont be such an headache. But then again, I do not know anything about C6 with a diesel engine
I've never owend a deisel. I'm soooo glad. Modern cars are designed to break and cost more moeny than anyone can afford. I'm sure this is done on purpose. Plastic that is subject to many heat cycles will break. Not if, just when. Usually just before or during a long journey. I eant my Rover P6 or Mercedes 450SE W116 back please. fix 'em with a hammer and anvil.
I took on a friend's 2008 Golf 1.4 tsi twincharger, with a slipped timing chain and a set of bent inlet valves, so I feel your pain. Two of the sump bolts required the notches in the flywheel lining up and a foot long ball end driver to remove. There is no guidance on how you could possibly get them back in. I eventually managed to make them semi-captive in the sump and eventually get the sump back on without getting completely covered in sealant (there is no gasket). The combustion engine is wheezing its last.
Couldn’t agree more; that C6 is just as complex as my old E60 530d or my current Land Rover Disco 3. It’s of the era of compact and complex engine bays and it’s origin in no was affects this.
If you keep throwing parts, money and your own body parts at it you'll get it sorted eventually.... Right? 😂That's what I keep telling myself with my own stuff anyway.
Because old. It's an absolutely appropriate age for a a water pump to go especially if the car has been used intermittently. It absolutely not the appropriate time though but is that not just always the case. I had to change the clutch master on my mondeo lastwinter in -17degrees and blissard. Which I think is simular.
Can’t blame being a Citroen for this. It’s lasted well with the mileage. As a serial BMW licker, I’ve changed many water pumps now, of course. Being a longitudinal helps, but it’s always a ‘Eugh’ job. And normally needs doing in time to get to work on a Monday.
I don't see what the problem is with driving a Picasso to France. The car is practical, economical and quite obviously durable. The Picasso is not fast, but not very slow either. It is "quadratisch, praktisch, gut" (square, practical, good) as the Germans say in a figurative sense. However, I hope you get the C6 sorted which is of course a much more inspiring car to drive (when it works). Otherwise a nice video. Keep up the good work :)
I know the 2.7L 6 cylinder diesels are an order of magnitude smoother but... As a mechanic who works on his own stuff I bought a 2.2L C5 with 200hp just because it's not as big of a pain in the arse to work on
5cy volvo d5 isn't hard to work on, maybe compared to redblock. But not a smidge on that c6. If it was a c6 rs6 maybe justifies the complexity, but for a 2.7 diesel - nah not worth it. My opinion. Enjoy the vids though.
I have had so many of these kinds of failures, I have started to fire the parts cannon at the area of my cars I am working on, to try to prevent this happening. It's great until the new water pump lasted only 20 minutes FFS.
Add L322 Rangies (TDV8) to that list, body off to do turbos! Does make you wonder if at least part of the complexity issue, in times past an engine was designed for one model / floorpan / body / transmission. In more recent times, an engine is developed independently and used accross many brands never mind models, car makers have to add solutions as needed to make them work with their application. I have bad mouthed Eurocarprats so much I have to wear a diguise or ask someone to go in for me. Pity they don't do your brand of doged perseverrence, that I would buy.
Amazing work, Rich. You sharing these videos explains exactly why some garage bills can be quite so pricey. It looks to be so nearly there. Will you be brave and gas the aircon system too before your very well-earned break?
What coolant was used originally? It has a orange colour as far as you know. What can I use to mix with in order to fill up the level to the top? Some warned me to mix certain coolants. Can you say what's the correct coolant to use, mixed with the factory coolant?
How on Earth did Peugeot Citroen, once masters of the Diesel Engine go to Ford, who used to buy diesel engines from Peugeot, for collaboration on a Diesel Engine!
It was a two way street. Ford helped the Lion engine onto life, and PSA gave them the DW10 to use (and bagde as a TDCI). Then they worked on the 1.4 and 1.6 engines together.
Just come in from the top jack engine up a little and you can change it if you need to change the trumpet plastic twin pipe behind the alternator just come from underneath remove the air co unit and alltinator and you can change that as well the water pump is ok to do remove the top engine mount and fan belt off don't forget to undo the water pump bolts first while the belt is on
Any link to why the water pump would fail shortly after revamping the entire coolent system? Seems too much of a coincidence but then again, because french, i remember my 206 would get a fault, I'd fix it and then a new fault somewhere different would emerge literally shortly afterwards.
@@UPnDOWN Exactly… Furious Driving had the same thing on his Volvo clutch… it finally found where he hadn’t properly tightened up the pipe when he changed the slave cylinder. In this case I’d suspect the fact that the old coolant filled with Stop Leak had been drained and comprehensively flushed…
@@UPnDOWN I remember in the old days that if the brake slave cylinders were replaced, the master was likely to go. "I'm a *water* pump. En greve."
I think "because French" is a correct statement, but from a cultural POV. Cars-wise, I think they're often very clever,.and all cars have stupid bits somewhere
