Marr may not have the voice that Morrissey has, but when it comes to performing the old Smiths songs Marr does a better job filling in the vocals on his own than Morrissey could ever do with someone else filling in Marr's guitar.
When I hear this song, I love the talent of Johnny Marr and can only wonder how good the song would hear with Morrissey singing it with Johnny playing. When I listen to Morrissey, I can only marvel but wonder how good it would sound if Johnny was playing beside him. Forget about Joyce & Rourke, surely Morrissey & Marr can talk? And then, to make the make the dream come true of millions, play together again? It should happen, make it happen! Vote for a Marr/Morrissey re-union!!
Somehow, although I feel the same with regards to listening to Marr without Morrissey and vice versa, I think a Smiths reunion would be rather tragic. Bands from the past should stay bands from the past.
Louis O'Halloran I understand what you're saying Louis but I would say that it seems strange that both Johnny Marr and SP Morissey have both included this (superb) song in their setlist in recent tours. I agree that most reunions are probably wishful thinking (save Stone Roses - made my musical life!) but I think that Morrissey & Marr (only- not R&J) is made to happen and, curse me for being hopeful, I think that they would both benefit and enjoy it.
@@Titlefightersd the real difficulty, and i mean really real difficult difficulty, is in the speed at which marr effortlessly plays this entire song, rhythm and the lead. crazy.
100% agree. This break in specific is absolutely from another planet if you consider the alternation bass-high notes, as well as the variety of the notes, you need to listen to it very carefully to realize it (although not in this live version). I get completely pissed off when I read some pseudo-guitarists stating this is "basic playing"
Obviously Morrissey's vocals are irreplaceable. But so is Marr's guitar. Johnny does a great job here, he really can carry a tune, and I'm glad he's playing these songs!
If you're not a natural talent don't start acting like you are, it is like Andrew Rigley saying it was his input that made George Michael talented, Adonis letts and Jones slagging off strummer. Like hello
It's great to see both fathers still love their baby. Moz would sound better with Marr and vice versa but let's all just be happy they don't sue the crap out of each other over their songs.
Johnny Marr is such an incredibly smooth song guitarist. Oddly, he reminds me of Glen Campbell, multi-talented, and just a killer player. Always knows what the song needs.
I was expecting that Morrisey's voice would be missed too much during these Smiths songs but surprisingly, Morrisey is not missed at all. Great job there Johnny!
Pleasantly surprised to see Johnny nailing this, he can kill on the guitar AND sing flawlessly a Morrissey original at the same time, and that, is a true god-like genius
I love this version of the song, it seems faster and Johnny Marr's deep voice gives the song a different edge. What a lack-lustre boring audience, one person dancing, What I wouldn't give to be in that audience.
Johnny must have been worried that someone might not have thought that his Morrisey vocal was fucking epic, so as a backup plan, decided to do it whilst looking like Al Pacino in Scarface. I'm off out to the hardware store, I need to buy a new coolometer, my old one has just exploded.
I've always thought Johnny Marr looks like Johnny Thunders and that that's probably why Morrissey was in love with him. Don't you just love amateur psychology. Actually isn't ALL psychology a load of old guff!
No matter how great a guitarist Johnny is....the full brilliance of his playing only shines it's brightest when he play's Smiths tracks....and it's the same when I've seen Moz live...there's just an extra dimension when they do Smiths songs. Some people are just born to compose and play together whether they like it or not !!!
Weird I get more of a smiths vibe out of this then when morrissey does solo covers, crazy how much instrumentals affect things, this is a great version very well done marr!
I just love listening to Johnny singing Morrissey's songs from the Smiths... He is fucking brilliant on the guitar, NOBODY sounds like him, he is 100% unique, the chords he uses are AMAZING! You should all check out Johnny playing and singing "Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want" also a classic Smiths song and also AMAZING! Respect from Davey in Éire...
One of my guitar icons, so I am not here to throw more superlatives. What I will say, is the band mates here, have made it wayyyy better than any Smiths version. Bass... Great level. Really brave of Johnny to do Smiths songs and sing! I'm not even reading the other comments because I know there'll be loads of idiots criticising him for either singing or doing 'sacred' Smiths stuff. Remember, this is the guy that wrote all Smiths music!
So true. My happiness in life would reach a peak if they ever had a reunion and I saw them play together live. Unfortunately I don't think that will ever happen, but we can always dream...

That was a solid and passionate performance, especially considering how much guitar work Marr has to do while singing (unlike Morrissey). And no auto-tune or lip sync here either, which is more than many other musicians can say. Bravo.
I have to confess that when the song started playing, reminded me of the Rank version and I thought I was going to listen Morrissey's voice. I would really love to hear those two singing it along :'( Johnny stills has the sound!
