  • Hugely profitable railroad companies are putting the entire American economy in jeopardy. The railroads refuse to negotiate a fair contract with workers who are on call 24/7 & haven’t gotten a raise in 3 years. 115,000 railroad workers could be forced to strike in September.

I think it’d make those corporate board’s have melt downs about their capital increases, which given what ask of their workers is reasonable. Not every industry needs to be a profit generator or be for-profit, and it’s my belief that shipping in America should be down with trains for a majority of the supply chain process. The strike would disrupt American’s well-being but on the other hand, capital hungry executives need to learn/experience struggle of obtaining more capital; it would reflect onto to them part of what the motions of being a worker in the rail industry are. #bailoutthepeople #occupywallstreet

If someone made $20 an hour and worked 20hrs a day you'd swear the pay was great based on the check as well. Meanwhile quality of ife is worthless.

I worked throughout the pandemic, no hazard pay or new contract. I worked for NS in the Harrisburg Terminal and basically got to experience the shift to psr. Started in late 2015, was furloughed on Christmas eve, those people are heartless, and finally, at the beginning of 2022 I got out. They were trying to drive the company into the ground to lower the operating ratio and it was destroying everything. I had worked there for 5 years and never left the extra board in an area where, when I hired, most guys held a regular job after a year. It was a joke. Yards were shut down, people were laid off, engines were stored and scrapped for parts, all while running monster trains and hoping that they could have one man crews. I departed 3 mile long trains regularly at the end and it was a nightmare because the my radio range was like a mile.....so it was not safe. The yards were so old, that they weren't even capable of having these trains built in there yards. Trainmasters were leaving left and right because of the demands of the general manager who would yell at them everyday to do the impossible. Departure times were all basically false too. They would log a departure time of like 8:00a as long as the train went past a signal while it was being built, but in reality it would be built for another hour or two and finally leave the yard at like 11:00a...they would store cars on the main to decrease time in the actual yard for the books and reduce the lull of cars on paper. They would build trains in the most ridiculous ways too. Loads should be towards the front and empties towards the back, but because of psr they would block the trains just to offload cars on these monster trains. So you would have loads all over and empties at the front, so the slack was crazy and the train would be at risk for coming apart. They ripped up most of the two track sections that existed and instead opted for single track and sidings so they would report less trackage on there taxes, but with the longer trains that they were running, they couldn't fit them on the sidings and were forced to run them and have every single smaller train hold for the one long train to pass. With less crews and only 12 hours of time on duty, the management was bascially shooting themselves in the foot. They made carmen inspect faster and faster, forcing cars onto the main that were at great risk of causing breakdowns. They shrank the car department and even brought in non union people to do the work so they could lower the man power costs. Maintenance of way were running skeleton crews and had increased territories to cover. The tracks were breaking, the engines were garbage, the crews were skeleton, volume was crazy, and everyone was miserable. Every winter it would get worse and worse...in our contract conductors were not allowed to use shovels, we could only use brooms to clean out switches. Well there were no longer maintenace of way guys to remove snow and they could use shovels and blowers etc...so i couldnt even move a train without it taking 30 mins to properly clear out a switch with a broom! when i first hired that never happened. When we would flat switch in the winter, some parts of the yard would have 10 -15 switches that would need attention to properly yard a train and build another, so thats your whole shift if theres no maintenace guys to help. So you just leave it for the next crew but the thing is, the train is supposed to be yarded and the next train built during your shift and it didnt happen...so you have management swarming and asking why you didnt shift the usual 200 cars during your shift, and your like....i cant do that safely because the switches wont throw because of snow. And I've got a broom. They had now forthought for any kind of issue and tried to run a railroad like it was sunny and 70 everyday. I had to fight management for every breach of contract instead of them compensating me like they should. If I didnt get a lunch break I was entitled to a claim that was payable to compensate me, they would just deny the claims everytime without even reading or investigating so they could save the $12 or whatever. Then i would have to go to the union to fight for it and during the talks basically they would be thrown out to negotiate other issues...like I'll throw these claims out if you bring back whatever or do whatever for us. The place was horrible. I hope the carriers realize that they are destroying the economic growth of the entire country by doing what they are doing and hampering industries across the board to raise the stock price. It's insanity.

I see it first hand daily Jon. I work for a short line in Scranton we come to Taylor yard daily and I feel sorry for the Binghamton Yard Masters and the guys who work the Sunbury Sub. They do all they can with limited crews to keep the cars coming. We've seen our freight sit in sidings for days 10 miles away just outside the limits we're qualified to run on and our customers ready to shut down production because their cars have been sitting between Buffalo and Binghamton for 2 weeks. We see the daily 11z come by which thank God has not had any catastrophes as of yet 15k feet going in emergency multiple times from Clark's Summit to Yatesville because of heavy descending grade and stalling to Yatesville because of asending grade. Terrible marshalling on that 11 z with empties all through out between some of the heavy ass loads that come on that train. It's a disaster in the making coming through Scranton. The 12z now the 10z with the same footage and mostly loads north to Binghamton under powered will have 3 or 4 units and usually 1 off line stalling on the grade out of Scranton because they combined the 4 trains that ran through daily to 2 that you're lucky run daily. It's a shit show and I feel for the really great people we work along with and definitely worry about their safety. As much as it would hurt our little railroad I totally support my Class 1 brothers and sisters to do what they need to do to make their jobs safe and get the compensation they deserve.

I remember back many years when we were on strike. This was probably in the early 1980's and the only railroad radios we had were on the locomotive or base stations. But I'm a radio guy so I monitored what management was doing listening to their railroad mobile phone channel and the yard frequencies.
It was hilarious listenning to 'Yardmasters' and 'Trainmaster' operating locomotives and trying to switch or spot railcars. This was before intermodal so most everything was boxcars, tanks, gondolas, etc. Consequently there was LOTS of SWITCHING. One mobile phone call the 'Superintendent' made was to one of the locomotives that management was using and wanted to know 'How are things going?" Their reply was: "Well, we spotted one boxcar at Gallo Wine and derailed two boxcars outside their gate." "We can't get around the derailled boxcars to spot National Paper so were going to bring this locomotive back to the yard." 'Superintendent's' reply:
SEE IF YOU GUYS CAN IMPROVE YOUR AVERAGE and GET THAT LOCOMOTIVE BACK HERE WITHOUT DERAILLING IT TOO !"
Wes: THANK GOD NO ONE WAS SERIOUSLY INJURED OR KILLED. They had no idea how to operate a locomotive, switch, or spot, correctly couple trainline air, or make a legal 'Air Test'. So if the railroads don't come to their senses......well....you may want to stay a safe distance away from any railroad tracks. I welcome your thoughts.

German railroad has been run down over the past decades for the benefit of lorry transportation. US is pretty much just as shit as Germany in that respect. We, the people, have to rise up, force politicians to do what is necessary and not what big businesses want. Big Business does nothing for people, all they are about is massive profits for a handful of people. At the expense of the public at large. Let's boycott big tech, big oil, big whatever. Buy local. Buy sustainable. Avoid plastic when possible. Support your local farmers. Not only will you get high-quality goods, but you will also actively "vote" against big business (aka. too big to fail). No business is too big to fail (see Lehman Brothers), no ship is unsinkable (see Titanic). You think that Facebook or Google provide their services for free, out of the goodness of their hears? Think again, YOU ARE the product they sell to other companies.

There simply is no left-wing movement in the US (nor in most other Western countries). We have lost focus on what is the real centrist policy. We take right policies to be centrist these days. That has to change. Politicians need to work FOR THE PEOPLE, not the other way around. The Schitty part is, because the RRs are considered vital for o commerce, the congress can just order us back to work while we “work” out our differences.

PEB gave recommendations on August 16 2022, on what we should be compensated it’s not what the unions or railroaders wanted to hear, but congress will never let a strike or lockout to happen, they are hiring 100’s people of new employees to replace the quitter’s as we speak, railroaders say strike but you have to realize we are following a RLA of 1926, something made 96 years ago from the all powerful railroads to keep workers working.

47 years for SP and UP (UP bought SP in 1996), 8 years as Vice Local Chairman. I have seen management bleed it's employees year after year! They now demand you work 28 out of 31 days or they hand you discipline! Decided by some ass that sits in an office Monday thru Friday with weekends off!!!
One small problem everyone overlooks is PEB 219, where a mandate was made and signed by president Reagan that gay away our right to strike! Within 4-hours of a called strike, a court order will nullify any work action! What current employees should do collectively is shove the Rulebook up the carriers ass sideways! Comply with every operating rule 100%. Nothing will ever move! Easy to find defective locks, cars, equipment, etc. This would effectively and legally shut the RXR's down!!!

Those new employees aren't engineer qualified. These new guys can't build trains in the yard with any efficiency to save their life. If the workers actually strike and hold strong they could rip the country a new A_Hole.

The railroad seems like such fun work if you are working adequate hours and get a decent amount of home time. 1 week on and 4 days off? 2 weeks on and 1 week off?
I'm all for this if they strike. I want to be a railroader but all this bullshit is holding a new generation back. Make working with trains a great job again

When the strike comes September 15th ALL union members need to stand together when congress forces us back to work and stay home. Railroads can’t fire us all they can barely fill the jobs they are trying to hire for now and it’s about time that we all show the carriers we meen business. They say we don’t deserve to share in the profits that come off our backs well let them toss their suits and ties aside and come out on the tracks and run trains or pick up a hammer and pound spikes all day.

Improve the work life balance‼️ Go to 5 on and up to two days off,if needed‼️ And a true two days off,not a railroad two days off. Let us get our already required 10 hours of UDR and then after that,we can take up to a true 48 hours off work. Get us out of the hotel on our rest,if not,DH us home to our families. And stop taking tier 2 out of my check if I’m single with no dependents or if we are single with kids, allow my dependents to collect our retirement if we pass away. Remove the age requirement for retirement and allow us to retire after 30 years regardless of age!

The problem is profit maximization. The bosses want the longest hours the lowest pay and to use up all the equipment until a collapse occurs then they can go to Congress and cry about how they are too big to fail and need a multi billion dollar bailout. Once the get bailed out than they can talk about government inefficiency how they know how to make a profit and demand they be given the railroads back for a song and a dance so they can do the same thing all over again. The railroads profit comes from unpaid labor. They love to talk about how they hate paying a tax but love taxpayer funded modernization. The rail bosses ride up and down the railroad main lines in Private coaches while they talk about how passenger rail is inefficient and too expensive. .

Here's a secret - I'm a young man, I always thought it would be a good career path to work for the railroad (CSX) and I've always loved trains. After I moved to a city that had a railyard, I got a job to get established, I was working as an operations lead. A month or so after things got constant and comfortable for me, all moved in, all my bills paid, I got online just too see what kind of jobs and pay were available - turns out I was making $1K more a year, from GO, to watch people load trucks than an on-call conductor in charge of all kinds of safety and integral movements - and my pay as a lead is common.
Now... one out of two things is very wrong here (which it is, or is worse, IDK)... but on top of that, a terrible skilled hands-on dedicated career talent pool is certain fact and a shame for all of us who care.
