    What a lovely video! As a Dominican from Santo Domingo, I always like to say that the Dominican Republic is just not beaches and coconuts. Visit the mountains, especially Jarabacoa and Constanza (maybe you can visit the pyramid in Valle Nuevo!). Also you can visit the desert in the south coast (Dunas de Bani), you can go to Samaná and look for whales (whales season is from January to March in Samana). But, if you're into the music, get to know Dominican music (listening and dancing merengue and bachata). And there's a lor more. I guess that DR has most of the things.

      …..In addition, if you would like to know about history, here you can find the oldest European construction in the new world, since here was where the Spanish first settled down in America. You can start right next to you….in the town of “ La ISABELA”, and you Weill find also a beautiful beach there called “LA INCENADA”. Next step for history is, la ruina Vega vieja and capital, Santo Domingo and others places☺️
      Welcome 🙏 to DR and thanks for choosing our beautiful country. now, let’s dance 💃 some bachata, merengue, son montuno, palo and much more……some Dominican phrase, “Ya tu sabe que lo que”. It means, you know what’s up 😎🙏🇩🇴!!!!

      I'm glad my fellow Dominicans have touched on some of our country's cultural offerings. The DR is a melting pot that is rich in history. You are right by Sosua, a town that welcomed the Jews when so many other places shut their doors. You can visit its synagogue! Our beautiful spanish, our uplifting music, and flavorful food reflects all of these influences.

      In regard to Dominican Spanish,; it was the first Spanish or even European language spoken in this continent. The particular way in which it is spoken is due to the rich influence of old Spanish, Portuguese, Taino, various African languages and even Lebanese and Chinese languages. Dominican Republic is an authentic melting spot.

    Just starting watching your channel. Love it!!! I am from Ontario Canada and have family that live in Halifax Nova Scotia so have been there many times. Envy you so much being able to be away from the winter. Our plan in a few more years is to live 3 months in Dominican. Make sure you go to Las Terrenas. This is where we are wanting to be for the winter months. It is beautiful as well. I think we need to visit Cabarete as well at some point. I also agree with you. You really don't get to experience the culture of any country when only doing a all inclusive. We have done many of those as well but the past 5 years we have rented in Las Terrenas. Dominicans are very friendly kind people!!! Thanks for the great videos!!

    I'm Dominican and I've travelled to us twice and I can tell a common citizen of the middle class on the US could live like the high class here. The dollar value a lot of times more here than in the US. With 20 dollar you can have breakfast, lunch and dinner. (of course depending the place where you are going to buy the food)

    Just found your site to watch. We have gone down to DR every year last 11 years ( except with COVID) . To return in feb😁😁😁.....So fun to watch how excited you are to be in Cabarete. Cheap to get around between Cabarete and Sosua with the local Gua Gua. Makes for a fun and cheap ride. Cheaper than uber😁.. for sure go visit the Monkey Jungle, Sosua beach, WIlsons bar ( where river meets ocean east of Cabarete), Blu lagoon, Diamanté beach, Crazy ranch restaurant , Alicia beach in Sosua....just so much to see and do. Have a wonderful time. We will keep watching you vlogs and see your excitement..🌴🏖

    You guys are so lucky to be away from the Canadian winter this year! I’ve always wanted to spend a winter away but I have two cats and always felt it would be too difficult to plan travel with them or leave them that long. You’re right about judging places based on the all inclusive resorts. I visited the same resort you guys went to at the start of this series, I was there about 10 years ago. It was a pretty bad experience, rude staff, dirty room with bugs, inedible dried up food, it was really bad. Then we got unlucky with the weather as well, so I chopped Dominican off the travel list after that. Also was told it was too dangerous to leave the resort, by the looks of it, that was not true at all. I’ll have to re-visit the possibility of really traveling there proper!
    Btw, I do a little dance when I hear your opening song, I swear it’s gonna have to be in my earbuds the first time I get to travel again since covid!! Makes me giddy thinking about it!!

    2:03 did an all inclusive in Playa Dorada (called Sunscape these days?) and remember checking out the mall across the road, as well as being stunned by the well groomed grounds left and right while walking to a local casino (felt quite apprehensive at the same time🤔).
    When we stayed at another all inclusive resort near Samana, right by the Bridge to Nowhere (Bahia Principe Grand Cayacoa), we ventured into town. We weren’t as fearful as the first time on our own while checking out sights and stores - lots of larimar jewelry, but mostly rudimentary settings 😩. We actually enjoyed the hours outside of the all inclusive - gotta say, most locals under 35 were focused on their phones rather than their prospective customers….
    My two cents: While in the Dominican, enjoy sun and surf, but also walk into a real jewelry store, look for and buy a well crafted larimar pendant 😊😍

    Just so you know, I save every restaurant you visit and recommend in Google maps for future visits. Keep up the good work!

      So we met Danny Boy today. It turns out we are staying at a different Dreams, not the one in Macau.
      Anyway, long story short, he took us around a few places my wife wanted to go. As we were on our way to Macau Beach, I was suddenly struck with horrible pain from a kidney stone. He helped us get to medical attention. I spent seven hours in the ER but we're back at the resort now, pain free. But it was a scary time for a couple of hours.

    I have so many questions, but I'll narrow it down 😆 What would be your monthly expenses there? Why DR over Mexico or Costa Rica? Thank you for helping pave the way!!

    • @DelightfulTravellers
      @DelightfulTravellers  2 года назад +5

      We have a cost of living video coming out in the next couple weeks. In general though everything is 1/2 the cost of Canada. Costa Rica is more pricey than here and MX. We came here to the DR because we never properly explored the country 😀 - Trevor

    If you’re spending the winter in Cabarete you really should get into kiteboarding. It’s a La Niña winter so the wind should be great. Unfortunately Cabarete isn’t the best place to learn the sport, but it can be done.

      DR and Mexico are a lot cheaper than CR. So that was an easy choice for a longer stay. We've never properly 'took in' the DR so that's what we wanted to try out. We know we'll always go back to Mexico! 😀- Trevor

    Guilty of doing just that in the DR simply because we never had more than a week at a time and the "word on the street" for the DR was always that it was too dangerous....the same has been said on Mexico but our last trip we had two weeks to explore and loved it so much...if we ever tire of Mexico( not sure that will happen lol) we would give the DR a try...thanks for the great info...Viv

      I’m glad you have a good time in Mexico and feel safe. Not disrespect to Mexico, but here in DR, you won’t find that about carteles, guerrillas kidnapping people. I understand Mexico is a way bigger country and here in DR isn’t perfect like any other place, but at least this is still a peaceful country and has lots opportunities to make business if you can. The most dangerous and corruptly people here are the politicians, which we are working hard to get them out, even though our new president has good goals, but let’s see if he really means it😎🇩🇴🙏!!!
      Enjoy your staying in that beautiful country too, Mexico 🇲🇽🙏😎

    Caba used to be good in the 90's early 00's, those were the glory days of the town building up, now too many people know of it and it got way more expensive. Good spot to learn how to surf, not so good for business, very slow periods. If your a wealthier person you can afford to leave and come back but, much better places to do that if finances aren't a thing. The pricing was the balance before, bad roads, hospitals, power and economy don't match. Go to Sosua or Sabaneta and see what the locals live like. Can't do business in a local town so living local makes no sense, very poverty stricken. A few tourist towns in DR, north shore being adventure/sports side of the island. The kite school game is saturated along with the surf schools and restaurants. 2 years most businesses last along the strip. Good place to visit, good place to leave too lol

    Thank you guys. My partner and I just spent a month in the DR, trying out life here. Like you we are escaping the Canadian winter and hope to make it into a lifestyle. We’re staying in Bayahibe, but visited Puerto Plata, Cabarete for a couple days. We loved it and noticed the prices in Puerto Plata are much lower than Bayahibe. Food, café, etc.

    So what special things do you need to do to stay in a country for 4-6 months? What kind of visas or whatever do you need? Are they DR based or does Canada require special papers to be filled out. Basically, I guess I'm asking what kind of extra paper work is necessary to stay that long in another country. Thanks

    • @DelightfulTravellers
      @DelightfulTravellers  2 года назад

      There's an extended visa form you can fill out online for an additional 3 months. But that didn't work for us. Every expat that lives here has told us you just pay on the way out as a tourist. They charge by the month. So there's no real 'special papers' required. - Trevor

    My favorite drink there is a milkshake of "Zapote" or "Zapote" Juice... 👌🏻 Best drink/juice/milkshake ever.. By the way I used to work for the main carrier there before getting hired by another carrier in the US and moved out.. The max Speed right now is like 300/50 Mbps for residential is like $50-80 bucks.. I live in Arizona now and I can't get 200 for less than $120.. And is not even fiber..
