2022 Two Stroke Showdown!!! We took our 2022 Yamaha YZ125 and put it up against our 2022 Husqvarna TC125 for an all our two stroke comparison video. As most of you know by now, the 2022 Yamaha YZ125 finally got updated. With a ton of revisions under the hood can the 2022 Yamaha YZ125 2 Stroke compete with the Austrians? Motocross Action spent two days on the new blue machine at Glen Helen Racway. Day 1 was by itself and Day 2 was spent with the 2022 Husqvarna TC125 two stroke. Both bikes have a lot of differences and on the track we could really feel them. In this video we compare the bikes in detail, do a lap time challenge with Josh Mosiman, and ultimately decide a winner at the end. We hope you enjoy these versus videos. Probably the most anticipated Yamaha release since the original backwards engine 450 - great to hear that this one delivers!

The comprehensive, informative content we've come to expect from this channel! It's great to see Yamaha bring the YZ125 back into the thick of the fray.
I find it really interesting that you guys and swapmoto have oppisite opinions on the husky suspension, thats also a perfect example of why i belive in simply trying every bike you can, you'll never know what suits you if you just pick a bike based off shoot out results or what someone else says
I guess it depends on weight, skills, track and mood lol.
I think they all do a great job whether its Vital, Swap, MXA, Dirtrider etc. But one thing I've noticed is mxa is willing to have an open mind to change and learn how to mold their style to see the positives whereas the other companies are very stuck in their ways and if something feels different they don't like it and aren't willing to change it seems

It would be interesting to see the new and old YZ compared like this, since there are so many of the old ones out there.
Thank you MXA for doing a quality test and feedback of Yamaha's highly anticipated 125. This has been by far the best test I've read so far.

As great as the new Yamaha is, I cant get over how cheap some of the components are! And how 2nd hand it looks after only a few rides. I own a Yamaha, I love to ride it but it maintaining it and quality wise it feels miles behind the KTMs I have had.
lmao, if you had seen either one in person you'd have the opposite opinion. The KTM group bikes for all their upsides are of significantly lower quality in construction than the Yamaha.
@@kelceyk8199 I own a 2x 2022 Yamahas, and before that KTMs for 14years. I feel well placed to comment.
Yamaha is great to ride don't get me wrong, but its a pain to maintain and looks 2nd hand almost instantly. Plus you don't get any top spec equipment for your money like you do with KTM.
@@SWATTracing I bought a yz125 3 years ago best bike i have ever had. Never had any issues it delivered amazing things.. unfortunately i made the stupid decision on dropping 9k on a husky 125 and the “composite” frame which is really just plastic cracked when I first rode it on the track… so then i switched to a ktm and it was being rebuilt every other ride..because the cdi control unit would just grenade the engine every 2hrs of riding.. i lost a bit more than 300 a week replacing the bs l.. and the yz only problem I have had was my detent spring pop outta the groove.. got an aftermarket one and never had the issue since.. best bike imo

That really is a shame you experienced that. I've heard some stories of the Husky subframes.
Is your bike one of the 2022 bikes affected with the substandard conrod? I hope not. They've really dropped the ball (probably covid induced) there.
Aye the YZ125 is considered a good bike.
My point is the Yamaha feels cheap, and looks cheap fast. Its great to ride though, really starting to gel with it.

Ok so the new YZ125, at 203-ish lbs, weighs as much as I do when I behave myself and stay away from the nighttime sugary snacks lol!!
Yamaha did the standard mxa mod for you guys by adding a tooth to the rear sprocket and you guys do it again. After adding another tooth procedded to blame the bike for needing to be short shifted. Would be nice if the two bikes were tested with the stock gearing.
Keefer did the same and he also joked about doing the "Jody", it obviously needs help down low compared to before, at least they are testing with even gearing between the brands now
@@tcmx712 I don't know that it is even gearing. Just because two bikes have same teeth on sprockets its not the same thing unless the primary reduction ratio of the crank and flywheel are the same. It might be the same on both brands but they are often way different between brands.
These "Versus" head-to-head MX bike comparisons are the best - great info, insights. I hope you guys eventually get your hands on a KTM 125 as well to add to the "versus" mix. Liked and subscribed.
Nice test! For lap times, looks like it comes to suspension and traction. The YZ staying up in the stroke and hooking up, the TC kinda squatting down in the harsh mid stroke and chattering on acceleration bumps.
Also, how different is the traction between the Dunlop's and the Bridgestone's?
Waite till all the motor mods come for the YZ!
I know nothing about motorcycles however when my kids were racing various brands I always had change in my pocket to afford fresh tires and filters / geometry mods when they were riding yamahas .
Then again I got a husky 50 for my grandson cause he isn’t pinning it yet , that’s up to his dad if I can build him a sick new bike.

Glad they still making 2-strokes ..I grew up on em but If we want Pro MX to last to infinity it's gotta make progress! Modern 4-strokes are awesome.💯 Give it 5yrs or less & electric bikes will be the thing 😞

It's funny how the bike with the stronger motor and the broader power band was still slower. It goes to show how important ergonomics and suspension are. It's possible that the tires also had something to do with it.

Nice review, having owned multiply YZ's and a TC250 for the last 3 years, It would be nice if you guys touched upon KTM frame geo. I've always felt the EURO bikes even with their most modern frames have always felt different than the Japan offerings. The YZ usually has a slacker head angle which sometimes translates to a more stable ride. I ride a lot of desert, fast and slow stuff. It took about 40 hours to truly dial in the head angle of the KTM frame. I love the handling of the TC now but just an observation. Keep up the 2 stroke content! I've been riding for over 25 years and ONLY 2 strokes!!!

Changing the sprocket on Yamaha may have affected lap times. Do you think the Husky would have benefited from a drop in sprocket? Great video thanks! ( What are the HP numbers for the bikes?)
The yamaha has always had more horsepower low and mid with the husky having more peak horsepower.
It's a bit like the yz250f vs 250sxf bottom end thing aswell. Going by the dyno the 250sxf has the most power down low (also the whole rev range in general) but people complain that it doesn't have the low end of the yz. What they fail to mention is that the ktm runs a 14t front sprocket vs the yz's 13t, I'd love to see a test where they put a 14t on a yz and compare
@@tcmx712 Yamaha will still have more grunt and unfortunately for the KTM the Yamaha would have a better stretch of power

The Yamaha seat is almost like 40" tall LOL, Husqvarna is 37" which is smart for a little bike. No yamaha employees can sit on that 40" seat

They do at Vet worlds (in the >60 class here). Unfortunately, I'm _way_ too heavy for 125s. I could deal with some of that if I'd lay off the tacos, but hey, quality of life, y'know? =P

MXA/Josh, you made jetting and gearing changes to the YZ, so did you do similar to the Husky, e.g. up the spring rate on the rear to get both bikes where you wanted them before comparing the end of day lap times?
Hey Dan, we ran the Husky with stock settings and didn't make any gearing, suspension or jetting settings. The stock Husky could be improved if we messed with it a little, but it's pretty good as is. I personally didn't think I'd be faster on the YZ, but I was surprised my lap times settled the score for us! Still gonna keep testing and trying stuff. We have a Pro Circuit pipe now for the YZ and we'll get the KTM to compare with it soon hopefully
@@joshmosiman1955 Isn't it only fair if you dialed in both bikes not just the YZ? the Husky jetting is awful stock and 48 tooth sprocket isn't ideal

Lap times is not only about horsepower.
It has to do with how much momentum you can carry through the corners and in the straightway, downhills etc
Yamaha because of much better suspension can find better grip in the corners and more stability through breaking bumps etc
So yes it can be faster even with 2 Hp less

@@andreasstefanou5898 true, as all manufacturers produce great bikes nowadays...except for Suzuki (and I only say this because Honda now sells their 2020 for $8600, and Suzuki keeps their 5+ year old machine for sell at $9k with less than half of the technology that the last gen Honda 450 has, and $400 USD more expensive). lol

I believe though that Yamaha now have the edge over the other brands.
Yamaha wins the most shootouts in the 450s and 250s the last few years and i believe that this has to do with the fact that firstly Yamaha have the best OEM suspension and secondly the fact that Yamaha are generally very good.
The dont have a really weak point to complain about.

Bro you guys all act like KTM, Gaggas, and Husqy are better than everything in every category, honestly i would Race or Ride a Kawasaki, or Yamaha over KTM, There way to expensive and seem to need more maintenance from what ive seen, yes im seeing mainly the smaller bikes my boy is racing 65's, and 85's, but things always making these KTM's go out during the race, or mainly on the gate, where all of the these KX's and YZ's are reliable!

I wonder if you backed out the powervalve spring on the TC125 would you have made up that time? Allow the powerband to kick in sooner, on my 22 tc125 i had to back mine out a turn or so to get the powerband to hit correctly

I've always bin a Yamaha fan- but like the husky being lower n softer suspension specially since IAM only 5.7 n 105 lbs n like the idea of being more planted
How tall should you be to ride a tc and you 125
“All new” 2005 tech with bold new plastics. Down 2HP plus roughly 13lbs heavier = nearly 4HP down in the seat of the pants. Put a Keihin or a Lectron on that Husky and leave that YZ in the dust.

i went from the 13t front to a 14t front , and from the 49t rear to a 48 . that also helped get rid of the low end sluggishness and bogging due to the factory overly rich jetting because the gearing change makes you rev a bit more down low , but you get a big top end benefit .
Are there any guys like me at 200 pounds riding a 125? In europe so dont need that power for triples or other fifth gear stuff.
Oh yes! I stayed on small bores for a few years when I integrated back into riding in 2015...I was riding Husky 150 and weighed in at 275lbs (At the time I was fighting Heavyweight MMA & Kickboxing at local casinos and shows in Seattle).
I can no longer do that type of sport, due to a really bad head injury from a car accident when someone side swiped me. I'm now 230lbs and ride a TM Racing EN300ES 2 stroke and (don't hate on me lol) I'm planning on buying the "last gen 2020" 2022 Honda CRF450R-S and doing a Pro Circuit engine build with port & polish since I always LOVED the twin pipe!
Admittedly, after owning a YZ250FX, I REALLY appreciate 4t power, as well - especially when your at racing pace! But I have to admit that my TM Racing machine is friggin smooth and powerful as any race bike out there, and it has a very strong modded-engine. I could be perfectly happy with never buying or riding another bike again, however, this 450 will be an "every few days" type of ride, as my 2t will ALWAYS be numero-uno when it comes to being my "daily driver!"
I really miss the 125-150cc chassis and powerband! Don't ever sell that machine, because the fun factor is out of this world!!! I still regret letting my small bore 2t go!

Dude you gave the dry weight of the husky look it up.. the Yamaha is a tad lighter than the husky than dry weight and same after they are weighed wet as well. Either way I’d take the Yamaha. They have always had very reliable motors and bike overall.
I think the only way the corporations will let the two strokes come back into racing is if they're able to charge the same $$ as four strokes
MSRP, TC-125 $7599, YZ-125 $6899. Bet you can make up that 2hp deficit with a big bore kit or aftermarket exhaust and finish around the same price.
Completely new engines(Cylinder,Tbi, Electric PV, Estart) and chassis look to be coming for 2023 to KTM 2 strokes so Yamaha right as they closed the gap might be trailing in HP again soon.
Getting a YZ250. 125 will be after that

You are both right. But he is talking about after you sit on it, with both bikes sag set to their own specs with your weight. Its because 10mm in shock rod length means a shorter spring too, which sags more. This is part of how everything is relative to total travel, the linkage progression ratio etc. Other tech vids have gone over this and say to think of the 10mm drop (3/8"), as actually one inch. Its just the way it all works out in the real world. Its one inch lower.
And all the above is not about comparing to other brands, its how much the Husky's actually changed when they lowered them the next year. Some buddies learned this the hard way when they had their bikes lowered.. one inch drop ended up feeling like 3 inches in real life. oops.
