Man…. That’s a shame about the 2022! Was hoping to hear some differences in handling over the 2020. As for the bike was definitely rich, but also wasn’t ran like it’s built to be. It smoking after being ripped on the track was all the built up carbon burning out of it. I bought a used 125 last year and the same thing happened I thought something was seriously wrong with it….
I like AJ but that is not a race he is going to win. Haiden Deegan is training daily at the moment with Eli Tomac, Dylan Ferrandis and Christian Craig on a supercross track that is as gnarly as we have seen in the first 2 races. Also Deegan has a factory Star racing Yamaha 250. Maybe AJ could get Jett to let him borrow his HRC 250 but still he lacks training at the moment.
YESSS, that would be very fun to see. Only issue is that haiden deegan would smoke aj. As haiden trains with the best of the best everyday, and he is just naturally amazing!

it’s more so not learning how but naturally picking up on how to, some people actually start off better on a 250f. It’s just all on your riding style. When i left 85s i was put on a 125 then they decided to move me to a 250 since my corner speed on a bigger bike wasn’t there yet, now i’m almost faster on a 125 than i am on my 250 due to just how much more aggressive i am on a bike.
That 22 was smoking like a chimney! Oil to gas ratio to low, makes it sluggish. Need to lean it out 40:1 and dial in the jetting. Get the gas mix right, fiddle with the jets, maybe tweak the power valve a little. I guarntee that 22 will rip, just needs a little tweaking.
Would love to see an update after its set up and adjusted better than out of the crate like the KTM is. BTW YZ125 radiator hoses have been the same hose design from 2002 to 2022
Leaving that gas off can get ya. Had a yz125 about 2 years ago, forgot to turn it on, half a lap in hit a big triple and it died right on the face. 2 cracked vertebrae and a broken femur was the result 🥴😂 you got lucky
i can't believe I dreamed about racing in CA in the mid 90s while living in NY. that track looks like pavement with some ruts on the side and the turns. what's the jetting on that 2022? you're smoking like I've never seen since my super thick '93 YZ 250.
@@kyleray4952 It probably is stock jetting, although it's not usually off by that much. I'm curious about the mix ratio too, the manual for my 2019 yz250 recommends 30:1. @@chriscurbstompscm personally I think most manuals fun a little rich. I had a mini 2 stroke bike and the manual said 25:1 "yeah, maybe when I'm breaking it in" it ran beautifully at 40:1. But it also was a low compression, low heat bike.
@@gerardogutierrez3840 There is oil specifically for mixing with gas in 2 strokes (like Yamalube 2R, for example). I would think the ratio would be the same no matter which brand you use, but if you're not sure you can call a local dealer and ask them.
Why you didn't make the right jetting? It is the same like make clicks on suspension. You allways must adjust some kind of things on a new stock bike to your Weight, Speed and Weather....
i have a 06 rm125 and a 22 yz125 on order.. maybe ill compare them.. not that i ride even close to an intermediate or pro level but maybe my 2 cents could be interesting

Bit of a downer for the owner of that 2022 but it's probs running oily due to break in or something if it's really new, right? Hope it cleans up down the track.
This needs to be re done with as close to new 2022 all properly jetted and fueled and I think that it hadn’t been riden very hard and got gummed up because a lot of the time if it’s smoking once u turn it off that’s built up carbon in the exhaust burning off
I can guarantee you that's just shit loads of build up from a (admittedly, rich running) 125 that's just been put-putted around it's whole life... If you burn a hole though a piston, or break off a section of ring they will just cough and die... No matter how small the hole/ chipped section of ring is.
Ya I think it just has been putted around for its whole life and has some sludge built up. It’ll probably run better now that aj has burnt some of it off
@@straightnobraker4677 I guarantee you that has a ring or piston gone because it was smoking after he let off the revs, it not far off seizing ⚠️ Been riding two stroke since the 80s, a rich bike will smoke as the throttle is opened a bike on the Verge of blowing up will smoke when the throttle is let off !
@@onlygazza It's smoking after he lets off because it's getting hot enough to burn all the built up carbon out of the pipe for the first time. Watch any Hard enduro riders finally opening their bikes up on a wide open stage and you'll see the exact same thing. Even if the rings are compromised it wont smoke like that, It's not a 4 stoke and the bottom end is quite dry by comparison.(it wouldn't run either, two strokes are extremely sensitive to blow-by, due to them use a very precise amount of crank case pressure to force the air/fuel mix into the cylinder)
@@onlygazza no!! It’s smoking cause of excess oil in the silencer after being shut off. Hence why it is still smoking. Same with some of my other friends after I rebuilt their motors I took them for a spin. But they also had that bike running way too rich. 22 yz looks like they added oil twice to the fuel by accident. Or the owners already hurt the engine before you rode it. You could tell immediately something was up with that bike.
Ya that was a complete stupid comparison considering they’re using a KTM that has already been set up for someone against a stock 22 Yamaha that’s running way too rich and probably haven’t even set the SAG or anything with the suspension! Cause that bike handles extremely well!
@@Ducatisti92 I disagree with ktm is better.. I see more ppl at the tracks that have KTM’s always having issues with running right. Wow the 2022 didn't get a fair shake whoever is mixing that premix or riding that bike before you probably mix it really rich and didn't rev it out as much and it built up in the silencer because you shouldn't be smoking that bad out of the silencer unless there's a lot of built up oil in there and finally someone who can actually ride....... rides it(AJ) .....AND STARTS clearing out the accumulated premix... I NOTICED even after almost a minute of being hard on the gas the smoke was still pouring out of the 2022 and a properly jetted /premixed bike ,.....the smoke will almost dissipate immediately as soon as it reaches operating temperature ........and the factory jetting from Yamaha should never be that rich the 2022 runs so much better with Crisper jetting as any 125 2-stroke with the jetting dialed in is going to run eons better than one that's not as you know the littlest differences can make all the differences.... And I suspect whoever is using the bike is probably using YAMALUBE 2R and even that synthetic stuff is absolutely garbage although it does lubricate well it's thinner and makes a mess out of everything and smokes like crazy and usually people who buy a new Yamaha usually go with the YAMALUBE since that's the recommended application but I cannot stand it I only use KLOTZs products or redline or Maxima 927 or K2 AND those are amazing oils to use on 125s in my experience.......
I just sold a sxf 250 2020 and bought a 2020 yz125. I'd say I'm quicker on the 250 but by fuck the 125 is way more fun. Take this from a 40 year old that witnessed the sin of 4 strokes coming into the game lol. Ferrari is quick but you'll have more fun in a subaru impreza.

Pointless using the 22 yz when it’s too rich . The Yz is gummed up with unburnt oil . Needs to be at 40:1 and rejetted
Thankyou
I would really enjoy a video matchup between Catanzaro and Haiden Deegan. Same bike super cross.
@@naturalhype321 When you do something your entire life you aren't "naturally amazing" at it, you literally have spent your entire life working towards the same goal! LMFAO
@@The_Cat_Authority No need to throw hate man! You can be Naturally Amazing at something and still do it for your entire life, that doesn't mean that you aren't good if you have to be doing it every day to become good.
Hey there AJ, I'm looking to buy my first bike. And have been searching for information and comparisons of bikes. I haven't found many videos. You have covered a lot of the things that I have been looking for. Your videos are fantastic. Very well done. I appreciate it!
Could you do a video detailing how to ride a 125 vs a more powerful bike?
it’s more so not learning how but naturally picking up on how to, some people actually start off better on a 250f. It’s just all on your riding style. When i left 85s i was put on a 125 then they decided to move me to a 250 since my corner speed on a bigger bike wasn’t there yet, now i’m almost faster on a 125 than i am on my 250 due to just how much more aggressive i am on a bike.
Two strokes are “cool” again. But it’s way easier to ride a 4T on a track than a 2T.
maybe you should ask Stanke dawg about that!!
never thought id see aj on my childhood track :D
Rumor is the stock jetting is off on the 2022 yz125.
I believe it look how much it was smoking in the vid, running way to rich
Never thought you would go to club moto used to ride and race there all the time growing up as a kid such a nice track
It was very good to know you were at club Moto my dads neighbor was in your class he was so excited to go and dam your pretty fast and smooth !!!
Fuck man ouch
Ouch SpeedFirst, hope you're OK now man and all healed up 😮
You should try this again but with lap times and on a properly watered and groomed track.
i can't believe I dreamed about racing in CA in the mid 90s while living in NY. that track looks like pavement with some ruts on the side and the turns. what's the jetting on that 2022? you're smoking like I've never seen since my super thick '93 YZ 250.
A whole lot of power shifting love it.
The YZ125 has always been the Best two stroke 125 Bike. Always.
Mine is coming in this week we ordered it back in august it’s the monster edition
Great vid like usual 👍
I wish I could jump on any random bike and make it scream the way AJ does. Goals
Let's get a sx vs yz 250 vid!!
Dude with the 2022 YZ must foul spark plugs every ride, good lord. Jetting is everything on 2-strokes!
He said it's stock jetting. I wonder if he is running 20:1 fuel mixture instead of 40 or 32:1
@@kyleray4952 It probably is stock jetting, although it's not usually off by that much. I'm curious about the mix ratio too, the manual for my 2019 yz250 recommends 30:1. I'm sure some of the smoke is from unburnt oil in the pipe, but still. I would like to see AJ try a '22 yz125 that's been properly jetted.
@@chriscurbstompscm personally I think most manuals fun a little rich. I had a mini 2 stroke bike and the manual said 25:1 "yeah, maybe when I'm breaking it in" it ran beautifully at 40:1. But it also was a low compression, low heat bike.
@@chriscurbstompscm en el Manual de mi yz 125 también dice 30:1 pero será de aceite sintético o semi sintético?
@@gerardogutierrez3840 There is oil specifically for mixing with gas in 2 strokes (like Yamalube 2R, for example). I would think the ratio would be the same no matter which brand you use, but if you're not sure you can call a local dealer and ask them.
The way that guy rides with his body positioning I don’t think he’s in a position to judge a bikes performance
If you are looking for a 2022, 125cc mosquito fogger that will work great! So you still thinking of riding a 2-stroke in the 2022 Supercross season?
2 strokes are for real men. We understand your hesitation LOL
full studio audience at the end 😂
No foot touching the ground in the making of this video 👍👍👍
Love the real world review
Why you didn't make the right jetting? It is the same like make clicks on suspension. You allways must adjust some kind of things on a new stock bike to your Weight, Speed and Weather....
now you need to do a redo with a properly running 22
Fastest bikes I've seen at Club Moto are Sumo's with slicks, hard pack city.
I think it would be a funny test to do a 2022 Yz125 against my 2004 Rm125 😂
i have a 06 rm125 and a 22 yz125 on order.. maybe ill compare them.. not that i ride even close to an intermediate or pro level but maybe my 2 cents could be interesting
With a two-stroke it also shows how you drive it in
I love my 2019 yz125. And congrats on hitting 86k
Somebody’s doing something wrong. That 22 will rip if you have stock jets in like a 160 main 162 if it’s cold and 30:1 and rip! You can’t shift early you have to be in the right gear. Let her eat!
Being this is Norcal, I'm sure many a thrice divorced Berkeley grad, with 4 cats, a KPBS tote bag, driving by in her 2008 Prius has complained about the noise and the dust.
Hey your video says 2022 yz 125 vs 22 ktm125 & 22 yz125. The bottom part says the correct stuff but not your main video part
Clicked the video twice just to make sure i hit the like button.
Bit of a downer for the owner of that 2022 but it's probs running oily due to break in or something if it's really new, right? Hope it cleans up down the track.
This needs to be re done with as close to new 2022 all properly jetted and fueled and I think that it hadn’t been riden very hard and got gummed up because a lot of the time if it’s smoking once u turn it off that’s built up carbon in the exhaust burning off
Why do a test without getting the jetting sorted first?
Can you do the same with 4 strokes ? The higher rated ones ie Yamaha Honda kawi ktm
The piston or rings have gone on the 2022 yam ⚠️
I can guarantee you that's just shit loads of build up from a (admittedly, rich running) 125 that's just been put-putted around it's whole life... If you burn a hole though a piston, or break off a section of ring they will just cough and die... No matter how small the hole/ chipped section of ring is.
Ya I think it just has been putted around for its whole life and has some sludge built up. It’ll probably run better now that aj has burnt some of it off
@@straightnobraker4677 I guarantee you that has a ring or piston gone because it was smoking after he let off the revs, it not far off seizing ⚠️
Been riding two stroke since the 80s, a rich bike will smoke as the throttle is opened a bike on the Verge of blowing up will smoke when the throttle is let off !
I rode a c riders Honda 125 that never seen the power band and when I was done ripping it and shut it off it smoked for awhile. Same with some of my other friends after I rebuilt their motors I took them for a spin. But they also had that bike running way too rich. Kind of a bogus comparison when they don’t set up the other bikes right and have the ktm that’s already been set up.. obviously someone’s race bike.
Clone of our Moto Hose Suzuki box van!!!
I think that smoke mean the other guy riding it is slow 😂.. every time I hop on my girls tc 125 it smokes like crazy.. just a bunch of unburnt oil in the pipe is what someone told me 🤷♂️
I find it quite Scary that a so called pro mx rider, coach/trainer forgets to turn the fuel on and then recommends a possible jetting change to suit the 20-1 oil mixture ffs 🤦♂️
Yeah like omg someone that doesn't ride carbed bikes forgot to turn the fuel on. He clearly knows nothing!!!!! Then he made a comment that proves he isn't a mechanic. UGGGGHHHH clearly knows nothing about riding. I mean he isn't pro or anything.......... I find it quite scary people as dumb as you are allowed to be on the internet unsupervised!
Which is the best exhaust for 125 ?
Can someone explain why the 22 yz smoked after it stoped running.
The muffler packing on the 22 is oil soaked from a slow rider.
Is that a Suzuki box truck? Perhaps Travis pastranas old truck? Cuz I think that was my old box truck
Hey, at least he's honest.
That 22 YZ125 was way too rich
Dang, you're not only over the bars, you're over the fender alot. Is that due to them being two stroke, or older or both or what? It looked alot different than other times I see you.
Speaking, when are you going to be at the Romona track ? Or did you already ?
22 yz looks like they added oil twice to the fuel by accident. Or the owners already hurt the engine before you rode it. You could tell immediately something was up with that bike.
Hmmm, he is very close to Honda now. Sabotaging new Yamaha two stroke sales.
he always liked KTMs more, which indeed are better bikes period. Also Honda doesn't sell a 2stroke, so your comment is pointless
I think it’s funny, Bloomer. I dig that humor.
Their 50s are always needing attention same with a lot of their 2stroke lines. They don’t last very long either between rebuilds. I’ve seen a lot of ppl fed up and done with them as well and switched their kids to Yamaha and have way less problems. Hell even Kawasaki little bikes haven’t changed in years either and they run better too. Which I’ve been seeing them more too.
@@mxr248 The 50s can be finicky, and require a lot of attention, but they are FAST.
The bigger 2ts are all sound, and require no more attention than any other bikes.
We ran Yamaha YZ85s and found them terrible. They broke loads, and were made with very poor materials. We switched to KTMs and it was the best decision we made. Faster, better materials and superior components.
My personal experience
And I suspect whoever is using the bike is probably using YAMALUBE 2R and even that synthetic stuff is absolutely garbage although it does lubricate well it's thinner and makes a mess out of everything and smokes like crazy and usually people who buy a new Yamaha usually go with the YAMALUBE since that's the recommended application but I cannot stand it I only use KLOTZs products or redline or Maxima 927 or K2 AND those are amazing oils to use on 125s in my experience.......
ktm is just the best people need to learn that hah
I just sold a sxf 250 2020 and bought a 2020 yz125.
I'd say I'm quicker on the 250 but by fuck the 125 is way more fun.
Take this from a 40 year old that witnessed the sin of 4 strokes coming into the game lol.
Ferrari is quick but you'll have more fun in a subaru impreza.
That YZ sound though..
I have a 05 yz125 with SSS suspension and I'm glad I didn't build a new yz125
updates for the new yamaha YZ125: 25% more smoke!
YES!!!!
I was the 125th like... that's all. Oh, and bummed to hear about the 22 yz125 being slowest. I rode a 22 gasgas 125 and it blows the doors off my 2005 yz125. I might need an Austrian 125 next.
He’s full of it cause that yz pulls great! Plus the fact yz will be way more reliable than those Austria bikes. I see too many ppl with nothing but problems with them.
I had the jetting setup on my sons 22 Yz 125 and the suspension setup. It’s nowhere near slow.
Good video AJ! Good to see you riding a 2 stroke. You about over jumped that table on the 22 Yamaha.🤘🤘🔥🔥
That form tho!
AJ you looked smooth out there mane!
I say ktm
That 2022 yz was smoking more than a 2002 VW Jetta 😂😂
Bro, need you need a new thumb nail, almost thought you were testing 2 yz 2022 125s...
You mean the YZ with the ENZO tuned KYBs handled better than the stock one? Naw. 🙄
Should be running 38 to 1...Yamaha wants you to run 30 t0 1....and all the stuff i read everyone on a 125 or 125x were changing plugs all the time..me on my x run 38 t0 1 with a pro cricut a smart carb and it smokes!!!
And I thought the ktm jetting was bad lol then the yamaha was like "hold my beer".
Man I can’t believe I don’t know this lol But what’s it called (if it even has a name) but at 5:12-5:13 you pull the bike up like a mid air scrub then up to your chest which looks awsome 😂 I’ve accidentally did it a few times at certain places and I can’t ever get it to look that bada** lol that’s one thing you have always been able to do in sx before and even if you was dead last you’d make it look like your the fastest dude out out there your flow spanaze is great there should be a episode of how you explain stuff on that definitely lol
That thing was smoking like a civ.... sounds good though
Deffs need to re-do with proper jetting
Ktm is the 2 stoke king period.. doesn’t matter what cc they all have the same characteristics, they are smooth have good torque and run really crispy.
Husqvarna is best imo
