I must confess St Anger is my dirty pleasure album. Sure, it's not up to Metallica's standard, but there's something about that garage sound with weird lyrics and general teen angsty attitude. It doesn't always hit, but when it hits, damn.
St. Anger is in my top 3 favorite Metallica albums. I was listening to it at a crucial point in my life and the animosity and honesty of this album spoke to me deeply. They were treated like shit throughout the making of this album, and all that anger and frustration came out in this beast. The drums and guitar tones were so nasty and unfiltered, and James' vocals were really dark and aggressive. This album was untamed and showed a very different side of Metallica and i will forever love it, and i will forever love them.
Completely agree. People always have some sort of issue with the album, but I think it’s perfect. I wouldn’t change anything about it and it’s definitely in my top 3, right behind Death Magnetic. It helped me get through a difficult time in my life as well and it’s stuck with me as one of my favorites.
It’s an album I’ve been listening to this week. It’s one of my favourite albums for certain moods. Bands have to move on or they become boring and dull (and bored I’m sure). They have to make you feel something, even if for some it’s hate, which is ironic for an album called St Anger. A poor response is better than indifference and irrelevance.
I don't think Dirty Window is the worst track on St. Anger... The last time I listened to it I was struck by how the lyrics even ended up being kind of prophetic, for what ended up happening with the way people treat each other on social media
I would have to say that each song is a reflection of where the artist is at the time. No bad songs really, just maybe out of character or not your taste.
Well put! I completely agree, people grow, people change, people do drugs, people quit doing drugs, people get married, people get divorced, people suffer major losses, etc... If all this doesn't change the way you write songs and what you write lyrics about, you would run out of content within the first two or three albums!
Given how much bad press the album got when it first came out, I'm finding the St. Anger songs are actually fun to hear live. Their acoustic version of All Within My Hands as a case in point
Metallica got me into metal. St. Anger - from the days of ordering CDs and waiting for that happy yellow foam package - was a massive, maaaaassive disappointment. I can honestly say, it was my first full album disappointment, and I'll never regret hanging that shit CD from a fishing leader and shooting it (along with whatever the fuck else) with my buddies.
This live performance of this song should have been the actual recording of the song. It sounds so much better in the live version than the actual garbage recording of Dirty Window. It sounds so much better live. If you wanna listen to this song off the album then yes, it sucks. Not this live version that I absolutely love. metallica always impresses me with making their not so great songs sound so much better live and re written a little bit. Also giving Kirk a solo in this version is so much cooler as well and definitely needed. Metallica forever!!!
For the questions. They tuned to C for this album. Might even be Drop C, I don't remember, I used to cover Frantic with band. Fun one to play and sing. That was Kirk Hammett's signature pick ups. Dyes his nails just because probably. This whole thing was much better than what is on the album. James is into it, there's no shitty snare sound. Kirk does a solo, which wasn't on the album. Better energy overall IMHO. They should do the whole album live like that and it'd be way better. I like a few songs on it. Far as their radio songs, the worst is "Better Than You" to me. I always skip that one.
St Anger is mostly in drop C tuning, with the album version of Dirty Window being in drop C#, and the album also having some songs in drop A# and drop G#. I personally quite like St Anger as an album, production could’ve been miles better obviously but I can appreciate the songs themselves. Also, the signature on Kirks pickups are his own, those are his signature EMG Bonebreaker pickups, which you can get with either a signature engraved cover or a regular emg cover
I honestly feel that most of the hate to that album is completely exaggerated. The songs are great, and despite people not liking the snare sound I think it works super well with the songs.
This is the first time I have heard this song......and I totally DIG IT! It's got a Soundgarden-esque grunge thing going on...and it works. Its' only crime is that it's " not thrash metal". 🤨 And 2 that, I say.....🤨 whatevs.
I think with Saint Anger if they just mixed it without the "garage" sound they were shooting for I think the album would have sat a lot better. The lyrics however are probably my least favorite aspect. Compared to earlier works the lyrics feel a bit grade school at times.
Although Metallica is my favorite band of all time, St Anger is the only album that has given me a headache, but Dirty Window is far from the worst song on that album (my choices would be Shoot Me Again and Purify, my choice for which one is worse changes a lot).
One thing that the album St. Anger had that I absolutely loved was the CD came with a live DVD performance of the whole album...I wish more bands did that. Metallica's HQ always looked so cool imo. All that history in one building makes me tingly in WAP area
Honestly Dirty Window is still fun but if there has to be one song that is bad for even Metallica, that would be Atlas Rise. It feels that Lars doesn't know what to do in few parts.
I actually love the chorus of this song. I remember when this album came out and after I bought it my friends and I would blast the hell out of it. Sure it doesn’t have anything on the first 4 or 6 albums but if you listen to it as a regular Rock/metal fan it sounds great. Remove the bias and it will set you free
listening to the entire album in one sitting can be a bit of a drag/headache, yeah. but it was the first metallica album i bought (in my pre-teens, mind you) and while it was quite a handful on the ears it kind of resonated with me and of course now brings me back to far better and simpler days of those early 2000s. i really enjoy metallica's unloved children from that era. i'm glad they exist.
I actually really like the album. Since it came out. And I like most of their other albums too. I think is good that an artist explores different sounds and stuff. I don't know. That's just my take on it. Plus, St. Anger has a lot of "angry" energy, for lack of a better word. A lot of in your face metal. So yeah, I love it.
They tuned to Drop C on St. Anger quite a bit. Gave this kinda minor pentatonic / 90s crossover weirdness to the music. The biggest issue with the music on St. Anger is - they basically played the songs or the basic song structure just 2 to 3 times in a row without any great transitions or intermitting parts etc.
this song is oddly nostalgic for me. when i was like 16 in 2011 and would play gears 3 w my friend, when we would get an execution we would scream "i am judge and i am jury and i am executioner, too". it was honestly the best time
Worst Metallica song?!?!!? WRONG!! Personally, This is my favorite song on the Album. I have always maintained, that Metallica has Never written a bad song. Period. Some are certainly stronger than others, but None of them are bad. However, I would have to say the song that qualifies as their “Worst” song, would be “The House That Jack Built”, from the “Load” album.
A fantastic performance from an album that was an anathema to both my pals and myself coming out of high school. This performance made me want to go back and listen to St. Anger but I just couldn’t do it. I would love a re-recording of the entire album in this vein.
Oh, that's definitely Ashley Simpson signature pick ups, complete with finger syncing feature. Shred, you was thinking if his wah. Its the bieb's signature wah pedal, complete with auto tune switch, to aid in those tough key of C minor solos.
St. Anger got me into metal, there are some cheesy moments there, but it holds a special place in my heart. The rawness, anger, garage sound - love it all
As far as Kirk's fingernails being black, I remember watching a black and white movie called Village of the Damned. It had these little kids with black fingernails that would kill you if they touched you. Old 60s horror movie, right up Kirk's alley. Just my guess.
I think Dirty Window is one of the stand out songs from St. Anger. It sounds quite chunky in places. Cool solo as well from Kirk! Also at 0:55 is that a Red Special James has in that picture? I went to check out a video of Brain May showing off THE Red Special, but I saw the back doesn't look the same and it might be more a signature model than the real thing James has.

Aaand no more wah from kirk, heaven
Shoot Me Again sounds like Korn slammed into Godsmack at the top of a staircase while ReLoad was playing on the stereo. Dirty Window is "Stairway" levels of songwriting genius in comparison to that.
St Anger, Some Kind of Monster, and Invisible Kid have some cool sounds. I listen to that album when I want to appreciate the rest of their music more lol
You should listen to the actual album version, if you can stand the sound of St. Anger, I understand some people can't take that. If you can't, I recommend the studio rehearsals of the song.
I'm surprised Dirty Windows was voted. To me it's one of the few barely listenable tracks on the album (C- where most of the album is D or F). The song would benefit from being shorter by a minute or two so that the main riff (a decent one too) or breakdown doesn't repeat for the umpteenth time.
I bought the St Anger album when it first came out. I really tried to like it. But I just cant. There are a few small enjoyable moments but they are overwhelmingly outnumbered by cringe. I mean they wrote a song called invisible kid. Lame. Bad lyrics, bad sound, bad idea that should have never moved forward. I blame Bob Rock for just going with it instead of being blunt and just telling them they were making a shit album. The whole album is a brown stain on their legacy.
My problem with St.anger is not the drums sound, or the lack of solo its just the songs really rocks its first 2 to 3 minutes and I get bored after 3 minutes.

I've literally never heard anyone say it's Dirty Window. It's one of the best songs on the album, in fact. Their worst songs would stuff like Sweet Amber or Invisible Kid.
I think st anger was a try out piece.. all back together after all the problems, new bassist, fresh wounds.. maybe not all the inspiration on the table,..and they just flowed in what they felt... it might be their personal worst,..but weirdly enough, st anger stood his ground for some reason, especially live...
Anything Metallica did with Lou Reed is much worse than this. Of course RUclips delivered and replaced Lou Reed with Abraham Simpson, on one track, and it’s hilarious.

Looks like Kirk’s KH signature on those pickups, like the one on his signature skeleton foot wah.
Definitely fresh breath of new life is put into St.Anger songs while being played live recently.
This song isn't too bad played live. It definitely isn't their best song, but I would still rock out to it at a concert.
Invisible Kid is worse
If you can't enjoy 6:02 there is no saving you. Come on man that's pure headbang fuel. Y'all are just blinded by "durrr saint anger bad because everyone says so".
you have terrible taste, and that's fine, but don't push it onto others. st anger is a horrendous album
@@umi6817 I kinda struggle with the idea that the guy who is preaching the same opinion that everyone constantly screams every time anything to do with Saint Anger is mentioned is accusing me of "pushing my taste onto others"
@@plasmakitten4261 well, what do you want people to do? praise st anger as some sort of misunderstood work of genius? most people think it's garbage because it's garbage, deal with it
@@umi6817 I wouldn't mind if yall would stop spouting the same orthodox opinion over and over and over for years and decades. "Saint Anger is bad because there's terrible production and no guitar solos and the snare sounds bad, and the lyrics are confused, and also Lars bad, Napster suit bad". Literally millions of you have the exact same opinion for the exact same reasons. It never occurred to you that someone else could have a different opinion and doesn't care to hear the same opinion again for the trillionth time? We get it, you don't like Saint Anger. Now shut up about it and let the rest of us enjoy it.
@@plasmakitten4261 you really think you're special for liking that garbage heap of an album 😂 you do you, mate
Off-topic, but Shred, I am getting a message on your video for Rush saying "video is unavailable".
Try the Pomegranate Seltzer by Polar. It's fantastic.
The subject matter of this song harkens back to And justice for all, but with zero effort at composition and lyricism.
Anything Metallica did with Lou Reed is much worse than this.
Of course RUclips delivered and replaced Lou Reed with Abraham Simpson, on one track, and it’s hilarious.
How bad Dirty Window EVER may be, compared to Brandenburg Gate (Lulu) Dirty Window is a great song yet.
Hey! Any song where Het does a mariachi laugh can’t be the worst.
Invisible kid is
Or Bad Seed
My WAP juice isnt giving me the vital energy blast today. Oh shoot I forgot the 69 parts of WAP approved protein per sip
why cant you take the spec out of neighbors eye and he takes log out of yours?
Invisible Kid can see right through the dirty window.
I can name at least 5 other Metallica songs I'd delete before Dirty window
-Shoot me again
-Purify
-Poor twisted me
-Attitude
-slither
Album version is ass though
so many people have forgotten about Lulu... it was real sh*t
