    let me fix your conclusion:
    - if you want to work for someone else in the video game industry professionally - learn Maya
    - if you want to work for yourself in any capacity - learn blender
    - starting out learning blender for free is easily transitionable to Maya later.

Simply don't have the money to casually pick up maya and learn. It's far far from cheap, and good ol' free Blender is so very compraable . Seems a little harsh that there's no entry into this field that doesn't cost so much that I couldn't pay my bills.

Blender 2.8 will be a game changer.
New interface features, new render engine called EEVEE, ability to hide the stuff you will never use, game engine was unpopular so they dropped it. Adding a ton of new bits here and there that will simplify your work flow. Can't wait to use the official release of 2.8.

@Armin z3po It's probably best I don't say. But I can guarantee if you call any 3d studios where you live and ask, they either have several artists in the team using it, and Blender is being intergrated into the pipeline along side Autodesk OR they use it as their MAIN 3d application. Even a simple youtube search will show you how much more popular Blender is now.

    • @RRPHB

@Armin z3po Initially the studio where I worked used Maya software, but since the pandemic, we have had many obstacles to production. Production costs continue to swell while incomes are running low. Finally we decided to switch to blender software. At first it was a bit difficult to adapt, but now our studio is starting to grow rapidly again. I can say that blender is not inferior to Maya.

I used Maya for 3 years. It's a very powerful program if a little tricky to learn. You can make some fantastic models on it and it's animation feature is simple enough and brilliant when you learn how to use it. I can't use Maya anymore though because my license expired and it costs almost £1,500 a year on subscription to use. Thats a huge no no as someone who is living on a budget.
Got into Blender recently and so far I can say it's already much easier to use. It's functions aren't too dissimilar from Maya, it's much more processor friendly for my CPU and I can't believe it's free. My Maya knowledge is easily compatible with Blender which is awsome. I do wonder though if companies would still accept me if they knew I was more proficient with Blender instead of Maya because in my opinion, I think Blender just about edges out Maya.
Although I don't suppose it matters too much since they aren't so different.

Two of the companies I worked for changed their intire pipeline so they could use Blender. The Blender interface is not for those who can only use the mouse. its interface is confusing at first so it forces you to learn its shortcuts which in the long run speeds up your workflow a ton. some of the greatest addons in Blender even cut that time using shortcuts in half makes Blender way more powerful than it is, the goal is to maximise the use of shortcuts without relying on the menus. As Masterxeon1001 creator of Hardops addon said "if hardops users ever need to open up the interface, I lose!" I've animated in Blender, Maya and 3DSmax, my software of choice for fast editing is always Blender.

Since this is over a year old... Anyone that reads this, I'd suggest to not learn Maya.
    For 2 reasons:
Blender is getting huge grip right now, you have big investments into the Blender foundation by large companies. As an example I use the recent addition of 1.2 million by Epic Games.
Ubisoft also joined the Development Fund, at least their Film And Television Department completely rolled over to Blender and they hired some devs to contribute to the open source features of Blender.
Lemme tell you, for a huge company to completely shift a main source program like that... That is HUGE. They have their reasons, trust me.
The second one is you'll have to invest a lot into Maya. Sure you may Crack the program, be a pirate or just use the test version until you get applied, but when you get to the Meaningful stuff, like releasing showreels or selling your own projects, then it's going to get noticed.
So you are left with a huge upfront cost for a program, that, as current development implies, may be left to dust in the near future... Safe that money, learn Blender to at least get the basic quirks of 3d Modeling or whatever field you are interested in that uses these programs and THEN you can decide if you have to invest to learn Maya.
As I said, if you are just starting out, to be honest. By the time you are ready to employ the market landscape might search for "Blenderers" preferably.

PROOF: watch talks of Sean Kennedy, an generalist from OpenVFX at Blender Conference in 2013 and 2017. This is mind-blowing stuff, and Blender just did the awesome job there. Maya dominates Character Animation, Houdini dominates 3d FX, ZBrush dominates character modelling. Substance Painter for textures. Other stuff works. A lot of mograph artists use cinema 4d.
Maya has horrible support though, especially compared to ZBrush or Allegoritmic. The Maya community is weirdly fragmented despite the huge user base. Autodesk killed xsi just for kicks.
Blender is awesome, but is not used as much commercially, possibly for historical reasons. Its free though. So if that is all you can get your hands on, use it till the gui melts.
Houdini learning edition is free as well.

You can do the the whole pre-pro-post production workflow in Blender only because Blender has texture painting, compositing, video editing (Maya doesnt have it at all) and tons of free addons for creating trees, landscapes, animated clouds and skies (Sappling, Material and Texture library, Sky, Ant landscape...) and most importantly 1 free and 1 very cheap unlimited!!! render farm! Maya render farms are all very very very expensive!!! Also Cycles and Eevee Interactive rendering much much faster and has less crashes than Maya Arnold IPR for example. Rendering in Maya Arnold doesnt support GPU (only CPU) which is very frustrating since i bought the computer with dual 1070 and its was just waste of money because of that. In Maya a lot of features doesnt have sliders and fast and interactive preview on it and you have to insert all of the values manually and then press OK button to see the result (Xgen for example) which is insanely long and not intuitive. Also a lot of things are achievable only by using expressions, when in Blender i never had to use expressions to make fur for my wolf or other animals or to make rigged particle instances to work right. In Maya if you have for example 300 rigged mosquitos or spiders and want to make them as a particle instances its is insanely long work with expressions, when in Blender its much easier. The node editor in Maya (Hypershade) doesnt have easy nodes connections methods (drag the node and drop onto the noodle is impossible). Modelling and UV unwrapping much much better and easier in Blender. Many cool little tools like Freestyles or Dynamic Painting Maya doesnt have at all. I could continue to count drawbacks forever, but already tired to do so, and anyways there is no point to do so, because if companies got used to the program that was once better in the ancient times, but now sucks, they will still stick to that program because all their pipelines are centered around Maya and their workers know only Maya and they will not learn new program, if they can still somehow manage to do the end project, no matter how many crashes they have to go through and how many their own nerves they have to spend on it.

blender can use the keyboard shortcuts of maya, so you can learn both by using either blender or maya.
also, blender is not just free as in price but as in freedom (and open source) wich means, you can hire almost any developer (programmer) to add new features, while on maya you are locked to auto desktop and their roadmap.
for sure hiring an developer to make an feature is much more expensive than using an software that already have this feature, maybe crowdfunding can solve that, but that is something to take in mind if you own an company and is trying to decide wich software your company will be using and hiring artists who know how to use.

    • @josephbrandenburg4373
      @josephbrandenburg4373 5 лет назад

$1550 a year is also real expensive. I'm sure business license + support is significantly more, let's say $2500. And multiply that by about 30 artists... you've got enough money to hire a developer fulltime with some change.
You're completely right about this. I'd rather pay for open source than get proprietary stuff for free. It's the freedom that really matters.

He had to learn the basics of 3DS Max, as that’s what they use, which he picked up over the course of a weekend. It’s really not that hard to pick up another 3D Package when you’ve become highly skilled with one of them. Focus on creating tremendous artwork.

I have had the chance to work in the industry on both programs ( Maya to Blender ) and believe both are great for different purposes.
Blender is great fun for small and solo studios. I worked in an architectural visual effects firm and created models, animated, lighted & even composited whole sequences for deadlines. (3D Generalist Role)
Maya on the other hand is more of a tool along a whole bunch of processes.. Models are created & Animated in Maya, but are usually split off to other specific programs. (Zbrush or Mari for Texturing, Houdini for effects, Nuke for compositing etc.)
If you have access to an education license and your goal is a big studio job, use Maya..
Blenders unique but confusing layout, starter confusion & more-so generalist workflow seem to keep it away from the bigger studios.

i dont know why no one has ever mentioned it before but when you bring in any polygons in maya, the default sizes differ in the viewport although all of them show the scale as 1,1,1 in the attribute editor. so youll get a cube smaller than the cylinder for some reason. so this poses some problems for architectural modelling because you have to be extra careful about measuring meshes in it. i hit this stone and it was the breaking point for me and now im learning blender for its accuracy in measurements.

Let’s be honest, at least 99 percent of people who use Blender use it as a hobby or to visualize something for their job/degree outside the 3D industry. For that demographic the fact that the software is free, the huge amount of tutorials available and the amount of tasks Blender can do makes it superior. For those in the 3D industry and the gaming industry it seems like Blender is rarely used and seen as inferior in more complicated professional tasks.

    Correction -
If your goal is to work in video game industry - Learn Maya
If your goal is to make your own Movies, Work as independent Designer/ Freelancer, Run a team of Creative Indie Devs, Work in creative agency/studio and Learn 3D for Hobby - You can learn Blender.
    1. Never stop learning new software, as the industry keeps changing and you may fall behind if you put too much in one package only.
Keep Research, Design, Anatomy, Composition, Color Theory, Traditional Clay Sculpting, Sketching etc as your drive force and everything should look beautiful doesn't matter Blender or Maya or Ipad Apps.
    2. Basic fundamentals of every 3D package is same, Ult, Ctrl, Shift plus Mouse for navigation, Make seams for unwraps, Extrudes and Edgeloops for poly modeling, Emission Domains are same for simulation, Material nodes etc all look pretty similar once you have made up your mind that you want to learn new 3D software.
    3. We often forget that when we started 3D for the first time, It was not just 3D we were learning but also getting to know the concept of 3D modeling and viewport etc for the first time. Our first models looked ugly not because we didn't know 3d software but because we were new to anatomy and character modeling as well.
So for anyone shifting to the blender, the only challenge should only be getting used to the user interface ( which btw is pretty cool once you know it ).

Felt like my fingers were broken for a couple days hitting shortcuts that weren't there or had been setup differently. Maya is much more user friendly if you cant find a tool look through the menus. With blender it is all shortcuts, but blender has a well written users manual for learning all the shortcuts. It makes my skin crawl that people assume Blender is "entry level" when it comes to 3D software. Personally I use Zbrush and Blender both and previously used Maya for animation. While I can do the same projects in Blender that are done in Maya my question is why pay the absurd amount for Maya? If you know a whole lot about Maya, you will hate a whole lot about blender. Because you have learned a lot of tricks, and these combine into a workflow, unfortunately, these tricks that you cherish, blender may not have, or do it differently that forces you to rethink your workflow. Also, it takes a lot of time and practice to discover and know how to use these tricks.

Because Blender isn't "just for fun" in-spite of what the video said, not to mention the ethics of theft (or the fact that sometimes those "cracked" versions harbor viruses) or the fact that any content you make with "cracked" software is generally un-sellable as it is illegal from the get go. A lot of what the video said is that Blender is a BETTER tool. But the primary point is you don't have to steal it and can support a community of artists who work together to build Blender. The bottom line is that it will take years to develop the artistic skills of a 3D modeler before you are remotely eligible for a job doing it. If you happen to be a college student (not all students are eligible for the 24 month student version and if you're not you have to buy Autodesk a car to own Maya) and are already extremely accomplished with 3D modeling, then the 2 year student license of Maya makes sense assuming you expect to start a job in the industry in the next 24 months. For EVERYONE else, Blender. Even if your goal is to get a job in the industry, until you are instructing other people how to do it, you should be doing Blender because you aren't within 24 months of getting a job in the industry.
That price tag he showed for Maya was EVERY year for the rest of your life, not JUST a one time payment! By not supporting Blender, you're also supporting THAT type of "highway robbery". Compare the prices of other industry tools which often give you a perpetual license. I believe people are entitled to get paid for their software, but ZBrush is a lot less than that when its on sale and it's a one time payment with a perpetual license after that.

I don't know why companies require a special software before employing you... They should just state the result they need and if the employee can get the job done, it doesn't matter what software the person used in getting the results the company required.
I learn different softwares just to know which one I feel comfortable with.I then master the one I love and start making good works from it. It's good to use blender or Maya but never mind what any company requires or expect from you. Just make sure you learn and master the one you love. If possible, learn both to be on the safer side.
But to me, when you learn and master one software, learning a different software will be easy because transfer of knowledge is possible.
I Love blender, I love Maya, peace!

I believe the reason they want you to know specific software is for pipeline compatibility.

Do someone knows what is better software between Maya, Blender or Houdinin for math and physics explanation? use formulas combination, creating graphs and 3D modeling, of atoms, chaos of particles, dynamo, planets or solar system. Use the real universe laws such as gravity, electromagnetic, chocs between particles .... etc. Thanks

If Maya is so outweighed by Blender in terms of features, why don't video game studios ever use it?
As far as importing Blender made models into both Unity and Unreal is concerned, It's as easy as dragging and dropping. What advantage over Blender does Maya offer to justify such a ridiculous price point!?

    • @3dextrude
      @3dextrude  5 лет назад +1

I think it's mostly because people who work in games are used to Maya and 3dsmax. I don't think the price matters to many studios because ( and I am no tax expert) software expenses can be tax deducted. So being free is not really a selling point.

I think the diffrent softweres doesn't matter....mettars is what is 3d...if they can modling animation rigging vfx texturing sculpting and rendring then we can use any softwere...the clint should only get output ok

The problem i face is that i want to professionaly work in the game industry and already have experience programming, but when it comes to the models, i use blender but i look at the jobs in the usa and nothing is popping up with blender, and the main problem is that even i want to learn maya its a paid program and it's not it's downside the downside is that its expensive *$1,470* and even if i was a student it will be a trial version for 30 days.

Well, then there’s Maya LT, which might be a much more limited version of the big Maya counterpart, but at the same time, it is in reach of those who are looking into learning Maya without the high $$$ price point. It’s a good compromise between Blender and the full Maya package, imho.

The most immediate thing i would add in Blender is the smooth groups modifier, probably because i work with many imported fbx,so maybe it is even unnecessary if all the workflow is inside blender. I obviously vote blender. Cheers, nice vid

Smoothing groups is a clunky awkward way of doing a workflow already available in Blender. You can set sharp edges to define where your "groups" would be and it will differentiate them the same way but easier. No more keeping track of 32 arbitrary identifiers. In the end, the .fbx stores the smoothing by the vertex anyway, so it will come out the same.

Blender is completely customizable so the controls and interface is not a set back, but I love the fact that we have a community because we don’t need to be excepted from a big studio most people that learn blender make their own studio, and make a decent living off of it.

Can't you learn both (especially if you are a student, and able to get free Maya) and given that you can use Maya shortcuts on Blender 2.8?

I mainly use maya (I got it free due to being a student), but just got blender so I will tell you which one is better. (Fun Fact: Blender is suprisingly simular to roblox when it comes to controls and building)

@3dex I Agree with everything you said on both fronts. However, when I took my first professional dive into 3d software / modeling, I used Cinema4d, which is touted as the easiest to learn. I don't use Windows or Mac OSX anymore and use Linux instead.
In 2017, I decided to take the full dive into learning Blender3d. at this time of writing, I'm up to the level I was at in Cinema4d, and even past that.
Yes, Blender's Interface was the biggest obstacle in learning at first, but I had a job to do that required 3d, so I did some research here on youtube. All it takes is one or 2 great beginner's courses in blender to start. I found @Blender4Noobs and @BlenderGuru beginner courses to be a must watch. After that, I watched @Tutor4U and many other tutorials.
There are so many professionals in 3d using Blender. What I've observed is Small Game Dev Studios are actually using Blender 3d for Asset Creation, then moving on to Unity or UnrealEngine to make their games. You no longer need Maya and other tools as Blender has Everything needed for game design.
It's not just one program, but a full suite disguised as one program. Only thing you might need is an external audio editor like Audacity and you're fine.
Also, in the professional animation space, Pixar hires professionals who use Blender3d. So that's good. In other markets like India, there are studios teaching full courses using blender and some of the works are amazing quality. Just check the videos in Blender Conference 2016 and 2017 and you'll see. So, while Maya is the industry standard, Blender is catching up quite rapidly in the marketplace.
Blender3d is getting big in England, Australia, India, Germany, Netherlands, as far as I can tell by the Best Artists using it at the moment. Cinema4d seems to be the standard in Russia, and Maya may have the western world on lock.
Also, Maya is owned by Autodesk, and autodesk has bought out all of the 3d competition, and closed most of them down...like SoftImage XSI.
Here's what I've noticed you can replace with Blender3d alone:
    Maya, AfterEffects, zBrush, Adobe Premiere.

Important note: Unlike Maya & 3Dmax, Blender is not a NURBS modeler, which is required for the product design industry. Nevertheless it is excellent for everything else and 2.8 is a huge improvement.

Id say learn blender, most studios dont care what program you are using to model in. Sience blender is free it would be strange if a studio forbid the software. Export and pipline tools have to be in the studio prefered format tho.
