    As more and more parents are choosing not to vaccinate their children or are vaccinating them later, diseases like measles are making a comeback. What's behind this antivax movement? Are vaccines safe? How do vaccines work? Why do some people claim there is a link between vaccines and autism? This week we look at why are people afraid of something that has saved so many lives, and the history and science of vaccines. #vaccine #antivax #measles

    My uncle had polio when he was about 9. He thankfully recovered but now lives with the risk of post-polio syndrome. I had chicken pox before the vaccine became available in the US in 1995. At the time, around 1974, we asked if we couldn't be vaccinated first instead of getting chicken pox and were mad to be told that there wasn't a vaccine. I, at age 8, would have absolutely preferred one shot rather than getting a painful and miserable illness which left me with a scar. My siblings and I had mumps, too, when I was a toddler at the time of my uncle's wedding. My mom was pregnant and we were recovering when she had to bring home my newborn sister. It's a wonder any of us are here. A great aunt and two great uncles all died as children from now preventable illnesses and their mothers (my great-grandmothers) grieved for them for the rest of their lives.

    • @tessat338
      @tessat338 9 лет назад +4

      The chicken pox went through the neighborhood that summer after the pool opened. My older brother and sister had already had it but my younger sisters and I got it. We very possibly spread it to others. That is how it went in those days.

      @tessat338 9 лет назад +3

      Tessa T
      One of my friends came down with Chicken Pox as a college freshman, just after we got to university in 1984. He developed encephalitis and had to miss his first semester. We also had a measles scare because the vaccination that some people were given as children wasn't as effective as thought and we all had to be re-vaccinated. About 1990, a flat-mate caught Chicken Pox as an adult from his niece and nephew. He was out of commission in the middle of a job hunt for about 2 months. My child's pediatrician recommends vaccination against HIB virus which is responsible for a lot of childhood earaches as well as a strain of meningitis. My kid never suffered an ear ache until he took up swimming and even then, not until he was about 7 or 8 and old enough to understand what was going on.

      Both me and my brother got the chicken pox when we were young, we had to stay home for a whole week, we hated the scabs from it and being told not to scratch them and also my mother wasn't allowed to stay home with us or she would lose her job, so our elderly neighbour had to watch over us. I don't remember much of it, but I wouldn't want to have it again.

      @DustinRodriguez1_0 9 лет назад +7

      Tessa T Unfortunately, most people today have grown up never seeing their friends, siblings, and classmates die or be crippled or disfigured or suffer through these diseases. And since most people are unwilling to think rationally, relying instead on their intuition and emotions, no amount of evidence can convince them. The only thing that will change their mind is a dead child in their arms. I'm of the opinion that if a parent refuses to vaccinate their child, their doctor should take the child in the back, tell the parent that the child died from a freak sudden outburst of measles and that it is their fault, then put the child up for adoption. Leaving children with such ignorant and irrational parents is a vicious thing to do to the child.

      There are 4 main ways of teaching behaviors, divided into positive and negative, punishments and rewards (positive not meaning "good", but "adding something", and negative not meaning "bad", but "removing something"). Through many decades of research, we know the effectiveness rankings of these methods, and positive punishments (adding something unliked to stop an unwanted behavior...like hitting) are the least effective method. That doesn't mean it doesn't work at all, just that it's the least effective way to teach of those main 4. (For the curious, positive rewards are the most effective, followed by negative rewards, followed by negative punishment, followed last by positive punishment. And for examples of each, positive rewards are like giving them a small gift of some sort when they do something particularly good; negative rewards are like letting them skip chores or have a later bedtime if they do something good; negative punishment is grounding; and positive punishment is hitting or screaming. For adults, which, yes, also have disciplinary action on them, positive rewards are like subsidies or bonuses at work; negative rewards are like lowered insurance premiums; negative punishment is like prison (if it were done properly...which is another issue altogether); and positive punishment is like extra fees, fines, or charges.)

    Even if vaccines did cause autism, it's nowhere near as bad as any of the things they prevent. I'm autistic myself, so I know what it's like first hand. Even if my autism can get in my way sometimes, I wouldn't trade it for measles, mumps, polio, or any other deadly diasese prevented by a simple poke in the arm with a needle that could at worst cause a minor infection in your arm (and even then, only if done by a doctor who isn't a professional at giving shots).

      Actually there's a small chance of very deadly allergic reaction would be like one in a million for some reason anti-vaxxers like the chances of one in probably five to get measles and more cuz I'm running out of ideas because I'm vaccinated for some reason they like 1/5 chance of dying from measles more than the 1 in 1 million chance for them to get allergic reaction which would probably affect them less than freaking measles but in all seriousness they probably scared of needles because they were drugged

      @Random Gaming Well you see I live in America where a little sickness such as measles doesn't kill anyone as long as they don't act like idiots and get treated. It's not life-threatening at all and to think so is uneducated. I know someone who worked for the CDC and made vaccines for them and he even agrees that it isn't life threatening in America and is in fact misinformation. He's very much so pro-vax and says that the majority of pro-vaxxers are so uneducated and misinformed. It's a scare tactic and misinformation from third world countries. If I were elsewhere maybe I would worry but not here. I'd trade my autism for the measles in a heartbeat. Thanks for being so respectful btw

      Go to the CDC website, possible side effects for the MMR: permanent brain damage and death. But they will say "correlation does not equal causation" so that you wont freak out. However, if you look at all their evidence to support vaccines they are all correlation studies. No actual science done to prove that in 100% of all vaccines administered to children, none have caused autism (neurological damage).

      +Christopher Catton You're reply is not really a just basis for the insinuations you made in your initial comment. You are generalizing negligence of some and informed parental decisions of others into one category; making the notion that ALL individuals should be forced into a medical procedure (vaccines are a pharmaceutical drug with risks even noted by the CDC). In my opinion, taking the responsibility by making the informed decision as to what enters your child's bloodstream should be viewed as commendable as apposed to negligence or incompetence as per your comment. There is no "one size fits all" medical approach in any circumstance, so why should vaccines be viewed and distributed as such?

    • @ChrisCatton
      @ChrisCatton 8 лет назад +27

    • @DerfPoint5
      @DerfPoint5 8 лет назад +8

      +Christopher Catton So your imlying that parents can know absolutely nothing regarding biology when allowing the vaccine to be administered to a child, but would need to be biologists in order to questions their ingredients or the effectiveness of a vaccine? I can study biology and still not understand the immune system, or the epigenetic changes that foreign chemicals and proteins have on your DNA. But with your logic, we should blindly accept any pharmaceutical drug without questioning it's effects.... unless of course we were biologists, then we have that right? Am I understanding you correctly?

    I'm probably one of the youngest people around who personally knew a polio survivor. When I was a HS freshman, in 1971, one of the seniors that year was a girl who'd had polio and survived. She was able to walk using leg braces and two arm-crutches, until she wore out for the day and had to go to her wheelchair (and she couldn't use the wheelchair at all in our multi-story, non-elevatored school). If she's still alive, she'll be 61 or 62 now.

    Most anti-vaxxers I meet argue "child-diseases" are a phase children need to go through, like deciduous teeth.
    They tend forget that "child-diseases" are called that way because children infected with those diseases often died before even reaching adolescence.
    "Child-" as a prefix seems to downplay the seriousness of it all.

      We are fed fear in order for them to make a profit. Children died young when there wasn't clean water and living conditions. They are again dying young, only this time due to vaccines. Getting the measles naturally protected the person for life, and new research shows also sets up the immune system to be able to fight cancer better for life. No other country on the face of the earth has so many vaccines recommended! And no we don't have the best health here in the usa we also have one the worst of all developed nations. You cannot believe your entire life what you were told to believe and still protect your children. It's not possible.

    I don't understand why people in the US refuse to be vaccinated... I thought it was mandatory? In my country being vaccinated is mandatory. Sometimes vaccines can be given for free. I'm 25 now, I was vaccinated for chickenpox and measles when I was around 7-9. I have been contacted with both diseases but I caught nothing more than a mild fever. I never had to suffer other symptoms nor did I had an outbreak of spots. I don't get why people are so selfish and ignorant about this.

    • @lynxlive555
      @lynxlive555 9 лет назад +5

      Its mandatory for certain areas, like working in a hospital, jail, in the army, to attend a school. I'm sure there are other places. The thing about vaccines, they can cause ill side effects just like any medication. People just aren't educated enough and jump to formaldehyde or Thiomersal when they Google vaccine ingredients. Its like someone with no medical knowledge googling symptoms and thinking they are about to have a heart attack when they really just have gas or heart burn.

      LOL it's not. There is no specific company that suddenly provides universal vaccine for all types of disease nor is there a public relations conspiracy. We refuse to get vaccinated because our government lies about everything. so now we don't trust them.
      They lied about 911, lied about the gulf of Tonkin , lied about sadds wmd, lied about assad chemical weapons. Lied about jfk assassination, lied about obamacare , lied about economic recovery. I can go on and on. Do you think they are telling the truth about vaccines. Do you think they care about your health. You are just a human resource to them. A profit center. It's not that most people believe that vaccines don't work. That is not the issue. It's that they make them so fast now that they don't test them. They fast track them and many people are getting hurt by them.
      Instead of fixing the problem they took our right to sue them away in regular court where a jury can award you huge amounts of money. They did This because they know they were going to get sued a lot. So it's morbid they work or not , it's theybare kit safe now

I am the reason that parents apparently don't want to vaccinate their children. People in general don't know what autism is and what causes it and I resent having to explain anyone my condition does not affect my worth to society.
    Anti-vaxxers don't just tell me that the health of their children is subject to speculation. They tell me that my condition makes me less than human. I don't think that's acceptable. I respect the choice not to raise an autistic child; it's certainly a challenge. But that's not the same as gambling with your childrens' lives.

      True. Many vaccine opponents follow what could be viewed as an "I-ME-MINE" worldview. Accordingly they only view the issue as if they were living in a vacuum with their actions not impacting others = incorrect. Vaccination science is actually about the group as well as the individual. Infectious diseases are not static = they spread. Since when an unvaccinated person ventures out into the public space they are then interacting with others - others who have the right to not be exposed to something as a result of the poor choices of others = different rules apply. So we vaccinate to protect both the individual and the group. Have a nice day.

    Fantastic video! Thank you.
    As for why anti-vaccine movement exists:
    If one doesn't give their child a vaccine despite there being higher odds of them getting sick and dying, then at least they can say: it was in the hands of nature/god/"some outside, incontrollable factor".
    But if one gives their child a vaccine and they happen to get the much less likely outcome of some side-effect, then they would think they directly chose to have their child to get sick. Many parents don't choose to take on that responsibility and emotional baggage.

    • @dingai
      @dingai 8 лет назад +2

      +Ivan Tucakov yes, it may also partly be the "default choice" effect. if vaccination was automatic and you had to explicitly opt out (say, show up and stop a vaccination that was already happening at school for example) then you'd feel much more responsible if your kid got sick... and you'd feel no responsibility if there was a vaccine reaction (because it wasn't your choice in the first place). it's like that with organ donation in states where it's the default choice to be a donor and you have to opt out (they have high organ donation rates) and states where you have to opt in (they have low organ donation rates)...
      another example of how irrationally many of our most important decision are made

    I dont think people worry about them working... The problem is the manufacturing, the length of preservatives and methods of ingredients as well as agressive scheduling of all these vaccines that people have issues with. They have every right to be concerned. We blindly follow and accept the word of people who also unquestiinaly accept the products without any safeguards for the vaccines integrity. This is olainly dangerous and ignorant.

      Meanwhile it is apparent Todd that you have not heard about how vaccines have actually saved vastly more than that number. Epidemiologists - or people who study infectious diseases and their spread for a living - have estimated that for the period of 1994-2013 vaccine employment not only saved countless lives and prevented many people from developing lifelong health problems as a result of infectious diseases. They also have saved in excess of *1 TRILLION* dollars in direct/indirect healthcare costs as well.
      As such that amount paid out by the VICP since it's inception 30 years ago - which includes legal fees by the way as the VICP pays all legal fees even if a case is rejected - is but a fraction of what the US would have spent anyways treating those millions of people who would have otherwise gotten sick from what vaccines prevent had they not been employed. Better luck next time.

    If MMR was used less and less, We have to deal with Mumps and Rubella as well as measles

    • @AbeDillon
      @AbeDillon 2 года назад

      The rate of immunization necessary to achieve herd immunity is related to how contagious a given disease is. Mumps and Rubella are nowhere near as contagious as measles. The 92-94% vaccination rate is not enough to stop the rise of measles but it is enough to prevent severe outbreaks of Mumps and Rubella.

      quite the opposite, back then people were allowed to question the efficiency and risks of a vaccine.
      Now you have to face consequences if you refuse a vaccine. In Australia they're locked up in "concentration camps".
      In China they are sealed in their apartments by brute force.
      And if you decide to take the vax and ask to read the insert for side effects they give you a blank paper.

    Okay so what about when mass batches of vaccine fail? My daughters were vaccinated against pertussis their batch failed and they were miss diagnosed for over a month doing permanent damage to there lungs. Their gp (instead of e.r. doctors) finally got to see them and diagnosed them correctly and treated them. He told us that the batch they where given had failed and that Health Canada knew of this but refused to inform the public. Vaccination is only 90% effective and not a guarantee of immunity. Even though it failed my daughters I still firmly believe in it for the greater good. Great Video!!!!!!!
