  • Skellig Michael is an Irish island in the Atlantic, virtually stuck in time for more than 1,000 years. But now, after being featured in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," the UNESCO World Heritage Site is being stormed by fans of the Jedi. Mark Phillips reports.

    .....and actually, the island is BEAUTIFUL. So thank you Ireland, CBS and Lucasfilm for sharing it with us.

    We visited Skellig Michael in 2006... it is a harsh and enchanting place and was the highlight of our visit to Ireland and I will always remember it.

    Why is this a bad thing? It bring a greater awareness and appreciation to the site and increases the local economy. Maybe some come for Star Wars but they learn history while they are there.

      TheTCGChest Machu Picchu in Peru has those problems. They had to put a limit on mass tourism since the ruins were eroding and careless tourists left trash.

      It still has the same limit for people allowed on it daily as the limit was before it was featured in the film. I think the limit is around 160-180 people daily. There will never be tons of more people allowed on it.

      @loupyc 6 лет назад +1

      I don’t see the problem with it there’s a limit to the amount of people that can be there and I think most people would have respect while they are there

    I think its a travesty that this ethereal, historic site will be turned into a kind of star wars theme park with star wars crap sold in the local shops. Good for business but some things should be kept sacred and 'undiscovered'.
    Why does everything have to be commercialised?

      fruh fruh the island in the movie was intended to be the the birthplace of the Jedi order and the location of their first temple; a place that carries quite a bit of religious sentiment in its own right. Given this logic, why shouldn’t they be allowed to film on a location which carries the exact same sentiment?
