King Shark is fan service. He has had a lot of pages, both script and comic, devoted to him in the last decade. I dont get it either. I think it is a "Sparkly Vampire" situation.
I actually preferred Idris “Not Deadshot” over Will Smith’s Deadshot. Seemed like Idris was actually acting and portraying an actual character, versus Will Smith being Will Smith.
Some actors just play themselves in varying degrees, and are absolutely phenomenal at their craft. Case in point Denzel Washington. Not everyone has to be method like Daniel Day Lewis to be a great actor.
I feel like everyone’s watched cosmonauts video and is now saying this shit, in my opinion will smith was brilliant as deadshot he was the best character in the movie and at times I forgot it was even will smith portraying him
To me Idris was being Idris to his walk, to his typical maneurisms. He was the same guy he always is. I guess i watch more of his films to notice this than most🤔😔
King Shark was surprisingly heartwarming and funny. Was this movie perfect? No, but it’s fun and it shows how DC should let their directors have full control instead of meddling with their work
Studios meddling in creative production has like a 0.001% success rate. Yet they continue to do it. It's the perfect example of people who need to put their ego aside and let the experts do the work and yet, can't. And sadly, it translates across all walks of life.
I still find it funny that Captain Boomerang was more useful in this movie’s first 5 minutes than he was in the entirety of the last Suicide Squad movie.
"No one likes a showoff." "Unless what they're showing off is dope as fuck." "Fuck... that's true." This little exchange nearly made me choke. Cena's delivery is something else here.
Regardless of quality, I'd definitely say James Gunn's heart was in it. When DC absorbed him after being temporarily fired by Marvel, they told him he could literally do anything he wanted. And of all things, he decided to make a Suicide Squad movie. Mainly because he was actually a huge fan of the original comic series. Props to him for making a gutsy move and good for Warner Bros for staying the fuck away and letting the man create.
David ayer must be pissed right now. WB completely tore apart his creative vision and ruined his movie, the film we got barely resembled the one that he made. But then James Gunn comes in and WB lets him do anything he wants without any interference. It's good they're learning from their past mistakes, but I really want to see the original director's cut of Ayer's movie, before they cut out the character development and added in the hot topic bullshit
@@herloss448 the original promo pictures of joker didn't have it. Also there were scenes in the trailer where he didn't have it, like the one where half his face was burned and he was pulling the grenade pin with his teeth. Ayer's version of the movie had joker as the main villain, before they added in the stupid ass enchantress reshoots

I think his joker works if you think of it as kid Jason being recruited up by joker instead of batman. Explains the weird obsession with money and power and some of the edgey shit
I am unfamiliar with King Shark in the comics. I heard a rumor that some comic aficionados were a bit upset because King Shark in the comics is actually pretty smart. Kind of like what they did to Bane in Batman and Robin.
Actually that joke didn't work. For me, TDK and his powers looked like they would've been really cool for action scenes and the actor Gunn got to play him is really good. So to just see that potentially cool character wasted on a dumb gag was disappointing.
@@gamemediafan1714 That's what made the opening red herring really stick the landing. Relatively big name actors getting killed off even though they seemed to have potential was legitimately surprising, and that sets the tone that you will actually see some characters you enjoy die in the movie, and no, it's not a fakeout death.
I also love that, despite killing off Captain Boomerang early and eventually killing off Rick Flag by the end, both characters were put under a respectful, honorable light under James Gunn's direction.
The way Idris yelped at the rats was hilarious. This movie was a hell of a lot of fun. I didn't mind the development slowdown. Flawed, yeah, but it's not like the torture 2016 was.
I enjoyed this film well enough, I sense that it will become overhyped in peoples descriptions because it wasn't a pile of dog poo like the previous one was, it didn't do that well in the box office though so I hope the studios don't use that as an excuse to go back to the woke nonsense

Honestly having seen this, I'd take Idris Elba over Will Smith any day. Absolutely nailed this role! It felt like Idris Elba actually played the character, while Will Smith played... well, Will Smith in a Deadshot costume.
To be fair to Will Smith he suffered from the first movie not being able to decide who was the "main character" as it seemed to shift between him and Harely. Both seemed to want the movie to revolve around them and their back story. So instead of a fleshed out character, we got two more in depth people that still felt like side characters.
It wasn't preachy. It wasn't condescending. It wasn't filling in character types for the sake of it. It was good. A fun couple of hours with a no-brains-required label. C'mon, a walking shark and an army of rats and the best Kaiju in a long time. What more do you need?
The only time I genuinely laughed was when Amanda Waller parodied her 'explaining the villains backstory' scene from the first Suicide Squad. She gave Peacemaker the *exact* same backstory as BloodSport with a completely deadpan, serious delivery. Brilliant
That's because you have absolutely no clue what this movie is all about. It's comic book made Tarantino style. A play with conventions and motives. It's made to be taken through special lenses. The professional movie critics, usually a joke, are right this time. It's a comedy gold when you realize that and watch the movie for what it really is.
And the bit with Elba about "unique abilities," his indignation at being so clearly disposable, and the way it set up their rivalry for the rest of the movie. Very well done.
I also really liked how the villain wasn’t just a dictatorship. It was a corrupt goverment . Bc as soon as the dictator is killed , some other evil basterd just takes over . Its a nice well thought out twist on the villain i havent seen since robocop . It shows you how in a struggling country there are many people to step into evil things just for money and powwer .
Then they pretend "free elections" come which is hilarious. Most of the world doesn't want free elections, and the west doesn't really seem to invested in them any more either.
The first 10 minutes waa absolutely hilarious. I was cracking up seeing weasel struggling to not drown as soon as he falls in 😂😂 it was hilarious seeing everyone else get so violently murdered
Just goes to show how low the bar has sunk. Like imagine if one of these recent years slates of movies came out back in the 80s but back with 80s cg of the time, they would recall it as the worst year for movies ever. The writing of most modern movies are absolute shite
"Flawed But Fun" would have been a better title. I couldn't believe I actually had fun with a comic book movie since forever. Why I liked it more than typical comic book movies: * U don't know who's good and evil. It's not like Flash or Wonder woman could turn out to be evil in JL. * U don't know who would die in a Suicide Squad movie. There are actually some stakes.

I usually hate when a movie makes a joke or a gag multiple times but I thought the polka dot man seeing his mom gag was actually pretty funny. Somewhat edgy humor in a movie today is a huge win.
I really liked bloodsport instead of race swapping an iconic villain like Deadshot they took a D list villain and made him more prominent on his own merits. Also Idris performance was better because Will Smith’s ego won’t let him commit to being a villain while Idris was able to play a villain that had layers.
@@fleeplayTV All of the lines bloodsport had were originally deadshot. You can tell because there's some comedic lines and moments that were clearly written for Will Smith.
I think this is a great example of a movie who’s flaws don’t detract from the enjoyment that you get out of watching it, unlike the last Jedi. And in the end that’s really all that matters, being able to just have fun watching a movie is very rare nowadays but I had a good time.
Yup. This instalment of suicide squad was a nice little popcorn flick that was worth watching. A few laughs. Some decent action. No complaints. Would recommend.
This whole movie just sort of gave me a fun DND adventure vibe. From the "party" killing all the rebels on accident because they jumped to conclusions to the big boss and a slight but not groundbreaking twist at the end. Twists that turn characters against each other are always the most interesting. The Mummy (1999) sort of vibe. Fun, funny, and great characters.
It was great to because it subtly suggested to the audience that Waller was in some ways worse than the very villains she was blackmailing into national service
It's really good, the critical drinker rarely thinks superhero movies and shows are good so him saying that it's not boring , means it's really fun and enjoyable to the average audience like you and me
@Impersonal Immigrant I'm pretty sure most people who watched it, viewed it on a streaming service. I honestly think Theaters just aren't as popular as they once were. You can just watch movies within the comfort of your own home and if you're willing to dish out the cash, you can set up your own surround sound system with a 4k projector.
@Impersonal Immigrant because if you have HBO MAX, which lots of people do, you can watch it at home, in comfort, with no audience. Naturally tons people are going for that over going to the movies.
This is what the 2016 one should've been from the start. All the characters were likable, a far better villain and most of all,not having your spotify album as the OST
Listen, this movie had a very forgettable villain as Starro. But yeah, he's more memorable than Enchantress. So that is an improvement indeed. What was my point again?

Haven't seen the movie yet. But credit where credit is due, cheers to James Gunn for embracing the comic book nature of this movie. I know he did the same with Guardians. And I know James Wan tried some of the same with Aquaman. Go big or go home, is all I will say. The last Suicide Squad was pretentious as hell. Edgy for no reason, no sense of awareness or irony. All under a PG-13 rating. They try to sell their story as "this is the real world, our world, all dark and gritty and there's crime and military and politics" and then oh, a f*cking ancient witch is the big bad. Really? THIS movie, a witch could pop out from behind any corner and you wouldn't bat an eye. It would fit and make sense. Again, I haven't seen the movie. And I HATED that first trailer. But I look at how over the top just the design of the guns are even, and it works. You thought Aquaman's Octopus was pushing it? Here's a talking shark with hands and legs.🤪🤪

I love how the movie doesn't even try to make you empathize with Bloodsport because his daughter, given that it's clearly stated how of a shit father he is, even the man itself acknowledge he is a terrible influence for her, and by the end he manages to redeem his image in someway. Not like in the original where you were meant to like the psychopathic hired mercenary because deep within him he's just a father caring for his daughter and more bullshit.
Even if it isn’t perfect, what I love about The Suicide Squad is how the movie handled its characters. Coming into this movie on my first watch, I was a little bit worried if it would basically become “Harley Quinn and Friends”. I was extremely happy that James Gunn allowed each character to have their chance to shine; and because of that, everyone I know who saw it had their own favorite character. Ratcatcher 2, King Shark and Bloodsport are my top 3 favorites, and I hope to see them return in more Suicide Squad movies and their own spin-offs. With that out of the way, I can definitely say that The Suicide Squad is my favorite movie of the year, so far! I hope Warner Bros can let James Gunn make more movies for DC, because there’s so much potential with what he can do next. #RestoreTheGunnVerse
@@FP194 I thought the rats did, which I thought was ridiculous. I thought of "death by a thousand cuts" but if each cut is only a quarter inch deep from a rat would you die? Good point though I didn't realize that when I first watched it literally came down to harley and rat girl saving everyone.
Not all the characters, i would have love to see more of the first team, not just to kill them all in maybe less than 10 minutes. They didnt shine, my favourite character die in a second, fuck i love cap boomerang, he deserv better
The Harley and President part almost ruined the whole movie for me. The movie was doing a fucking GREAT job up until that point. The pacing hits a brick wall. I think if you cut that part out completely and speed up the part where they kidnap Dr. Who, the movie would be fantastic.
As in, never have El Presidente as a character, with the general guy always being the main villain, and cut directly from Harley being captured to her being tortured, fake-passing out, choking out the guard with her legs and escaping in a hail of bullets and bloodspray?
Yeah, while this was my favorite version of Harley, her mini side plot of romance with the president was awful. It felt so out of place that i almost stopped watching the movie. It felt like someone wrote that plot without reading the other parts of the script.
Peacemaker didn’t casually stab the sleeping dude; he sliced him up like he was slicing up a loaf of fresh bread! He must be fun on thanksgiving! Pass the butter!
While I like Will Smith a lot, he wasn't good in the first suicide squad. Idris Elba does much more with a similar character. Idris is one of those actors who got big a bit too late. He's 48 now, and starting to look older. He's going to age out of roles he could have nailed 10 years ago. Sucks. Then again, Keanu.
Will Smith whenever he's casted as a serious badass doesn't work for the most part. Elba should've been DeadShot from the start. About his age that's not a problem,Samuel L Jackson in Pulp Fiction was around Elba's age now
Will Smith always plays Will Smith. It was like Eddie Murphy playing Rudy Ray Moore. All I kept seeing was Eddie Murphy in bad makeup and hair. Idris Elba played an actual character.
At this point Elba is more entertaining than Will Smith. Smith at his height was a massive screen draw, but over the years lost his funny bone, takes himself way to seriously, and doesn't seem remotely like the same person.
He's not a trained actor that I can tell. He does his Will Smith schtick, and sometimes it fits the movie and is entertaining, and other times it doesn't. Elba had the humility to actually learn how to act I think.

This movie is like the weird , fun-loving cousin of the DCEU He's got some strange hobbies and quirks, but he's the only one having any fun, while everybody else is kind of dead inside (except maybe Shazam who is like the youngest sibling that got caught up in the family drama)
Not a single "fart in a mud reference", nowhere to be seen throwing up reference and a zero "are you serious" j. jonah jameson reference. So... I consider that a win for a movie review.
Weasel drowning immediately before the movie even really begins is one of the funniest things I've seen in a while. Such a perfect way to set the tone for the movie.
To me, I honestly had FUN and found it to be a complete BLAST!!! Honestly, I feel like this has got to be one of the best comic book films ever, and none of the fight scenes disappointed. But, as always, great points, The Critical Drinker!

It's sad that a movie simply being entertaining and not a vehicle for modern, angry and divisive political ideologies is such a rarity. I'll take it though. With both hands.
Movies have always been about political theatre… you’ve just recently pulled your head out of your ass and noticed. Just slide it back in and you’ll be happier.
Again, not a high bar. They made a bad movie that's somewhat fun. Okay, now make a good movie that's fun as well. And maybe then, you can start learning to do great movies that have awesome stories. And if you really put your mind to it DC, you can make excellent movies with incredible stories. Baby steps... is what I would say if this wasn't backed by fucking Warner Bros. It's sad to think that this constitutes as an above-average job for a million-dollar company.
I think Gunn did an amazing job with this one. The visuals, soundtrack and the characters were off the charts, and although some of the writing wasn't always spot on, I've got to say it has been a while since I have enjoyed a movie as I've enjoyed this one.
While I think the scene with Harley and the Dictator was a bit too long, I think it did a lot for her character progression, and was at least relevant to the story by having her shoot the main Dictator.
What was with the birds getting flamed after that? I felt it was going on for too long too but overall didn't mind it... until it led to the birds. Was it to demonize that colonel dude or whatever? Felt unnecessary.
True it did wonders for Harley's character, but I wonder what the overall effect was with the dictator's death. Sure there was a "power grab" but I'm sure the old dictator would've used his army the same way as the new dictator if he learned the SS were destroying Starro. The dictators are functionally the same in their actions in this movie.
To be fair to Will Smith, he was actually supposed to star in this movie as Deadshot, but his filming schedules clashed, so they brought in Idris Elba instead.
I thought Will just wasn’t interested in respiring the role (or wasn’t offered a contract to respire it). I know Jai Courtney didn’t really have interest to respire the role so that’s why he was killed off quickly
Actually I loved the movie, one of my favorites of DCEU. The movie makes you care about fleshed out characters and it doesn't take itself seriously. Really walks the thin line of being bad taste, and doesn't care. It's more like the old school James Gunn in Super mixed with some of the Guardians phase. And doesn't try to be gritty, dark, serious, etc. It's like those fun 90's action movies. Didn't try to be something it isn't, didn't try to build romantic relationships between characters and didn't force or preach you about anything. I didn't saw more than 15 min from the first one, but I had a blast with this one.
I loved Rick Flag in this movie. He was an effective foil to Peacemaker's psycho patriotism. Especially at the end, he shows that while he is fighting for his country, he won't follow them blindly. An infinitely more rewarding character arc than "oh no my girlfriend is a witch, i am sad".
@@fortheloveofking @LudoPhobi4 has a good point about Flag's role as a 'patriotic foil' in the film but yeah... I too agreed with Peacemaker's reasoning at the end of the film.

I loved the characters here. Ratcatcher was incredibely lovable and and cried "NO" out loud when Polkadot man got killed, wich is something I very rarely do
SAME!!! I rolled my eyes when I heard he was going to be in it because... well... Polka Dot Man. They made him so cool and sympathetic and INTERESTING in the movie that when he went down I literally yelled at my screen! I really wished that "dimensional disease" thing came into play against Starro. (Harley should have been removed from the film altogether to allow more time with King Shark and PDM!)
I think the best writing in this movie was during the fight between Flag and Cena, with each representing a different side of patriotism. Flag as the well meaning soldier trying to protect his country, and Cena as the mindless drone that does whatever the government tells him, no matter how immoral. That was some genuinely good writing and it made me really relate to Flag, and mourn his death.
This movie was such a pleasant surprise James Gun just nailed it, Ratcatcher and King Shark were my favorite but goddamn Idris Elba makes any movie 1000x better!
I wouldn't go that far, but I also keep asking myself why the fucker isn't in more movies, especially action ones. He's just perfect as a badass. Pacific Rim, Dark Tower, and so on. Hate on the movies all you like, but the dude looks great as the badass character.
Rat-Catcher II, Polk Dot Man and King Shark really grew on me and I like them. I am sick of Harley Quinn, years of comic fandom have turned her from a funny sidekick from BTAS to this super powered death machine, except she has no powers, no gear, no training, she just "Crazy", that is not a power.
I had never heard of them, but ended up truly caring. Great movie, it's only failt for me was lacking a bit of "show, don't tell" (the flashback in the bus was great, but why tell me a guy shot Superman without showing it?!)
As soon as her escape scene started, I thought, "Oh Christ, they're gonna have this 120lb woman kill dozens of trained soldiers single handedly, aren't they?" And sure enough.... oh, except they added some special effects to distract from the choreography. In a movie with a talking humanoid shark and a Godzilla-sized starfish, watching Margot Robbie (yet again) outfight/kill groups of grown men was what dented my suspension of disbelief.
When she was chained up and lifted herself and a soldier 1.5 times get size from the ground, I was willing to buy into some level of super-strength, and with that the following fights (ignoring that no soldier catches her with a bullet) were enjoyable

I thoroughly enjoyed it. It does bog down with the silly Harley subplot. I was surprised by some of the splatter! John Cena was fantastic. *SPOILER* It pleased me that Polka Dot Man died happy, he was so depressed until he unleashed his power on giant mother.
This film definitely does NOT deserve to be labeled a “flop” it was Miles above the original and I’ve already seen it Twice in theaters when I could Barely power through the previous once
"Flop" refers to how it performs in terms of viewership and net income, not quality. Something can be much better than something else and still completely flop where the other succeeded. The first Suicide Squad made a lot of money despite being utter garbage. So far this one looks like it'll struggle to make back its budget, which would make it a flop. Maybe positive reviews like this will help it dig itself out of a hole, and of course there will be endless excuses about HBO Max streaming to muddy the waters in terms of how well the film actually did, but at the moment it's looking extremely floppy.
YES! That was such a twist! And funny! And it's even telegraphed a little at the beginning with the pleasant exchange between the two guards (one goes to get the other coffee and the first guy says "thanks" or something). But it's still completely unexpected. The action takes you right out of it. Such a great way for the movie to set tone.

Best part is this felt like artistic expression. It wasn't just a robotic checklist of must have agenda pushing content shoved in, no matter what. Edited to change the word woke to agenda pushing since it's triggering people.
@@FullMetalB woke is a word now in the english vocabulary whether you like it or not. The left traditionally see it as a good thing because you are awake and aware enough to combat social injustices like racism and sexism, among other things. People on the right tend to see it as people using the term woke as an excuse to put certain agendas which can cause further division among people. People have described some woke content in movies to be very anti male and anti white in order to try to set equality. I am merely stating this movie shows equality amongst gender and race without needing to push down any race or gender in order to do so.
I should further clarify that people on left or right, or with no leaning towards either way, can feel many different ways about the term woke. So that I am not generalizing or stereotyping. But in a lot of cases each side of the political fence has taken a certain side in regards to that word.
@@abovewater6918 The term "woke" isn't a valid criticism for basically the reasons your trying to justify it; Different meanings for different people. I'd even point out its a whole hell of a lot broader than what your suggesting. Some folks see just having POC in the movie as "woke". Having a female character is grounds for being called "woke" in some circles. Its something used too often by disingenuous shit heads to really mean anything.
Okay well since I am okay with both women and POC being in movies, and I'm not a so called "shithead", and clearly my definition is different than some people's. I edited my post to clarify my point better.
I love the idea of this King Shark meeting Batman (Batfleck or Battison), and Batman slowly realising that while KS is dangerous, he's also remarkably easy to handle if you make friends with him.
I was hoping knowing his lackluster performance in Fast 9 was a result of him putting all that effort into the guy wearing a metal soup bowl on his head. Happy to have seen that was indeed the case, and deserved his A-Game way more than the former.
I had extremely low expectations for this movie and almost didn't watch it. I was basically peer preassured into it by my friends who wanted to watch it. Im so glad i watched it. I had a blast the characters grew on me massively especially harley who i couldn't stand in suicide squad
Me too I watched it at a friend’s birthday party I hadn’t watched the first one and figured this one would be as bad due to what I had heard about the first one, watched it, was pleasantly surprised and I would even watch it again
That's almost my experience to a "T." Given how god awful the first one was, plus how bad the trailer for this one was (they only showed the cheesy jokes and they were out of context), I expected nothing from this movie. But damn was it SOOOO fun and entertaining!

The ending battle scene with Rat-catcher was so beautiful. The music, taika waititi's one liner and the imagery all lined up so well. Who knew suicide squad would bring all the feels.
Fun fact: David Dalmastian, the guy who plays Polka Dot Man is the guy who played one of Joker's henchmen in The Dark Knight Rises. Thomas Schiff. His name tag says "Officer Dawes". When Gordon gets shot. Indicating Rachel is the Joker's next target.
The reason the Shark guy is explained in a throwaway line where she says "he is a descendant of a shark god" and Polka Dot man's powers are also explained by him so its not really vaporizing people for no reason its their reaction to the interdimensional virus that inhabits Polka Dot man's body.

I went in expecting a disappointing mess and found myself more than once laughing out loud and really enjoying the film and the fact it wasn't packed to the gills with pandering ti the SJW crowd was a breath if fresh air
Really depends on the director and what the executives ask of him/her. James Gunn usually gets a lot of freedom and he's good, so he usually makes good films... I'm always worried when they hire nobody's or activists... See Rian Johnson

I was there when Mad love hit the shelves so I feel qualified to say that this is the closest anyone has gotten to the Harley I know and love. It’s unimaginably uncomfortable for me to see her so overly sexualised.
The movie was definitely fun but let’s be honest, Superhero fatigue has finally begun to set in and not to mention the previous Suicide Squad movie didn’t leave a good first impression for the next one.
I think, although the film is dumb, giving creative control to a director is the best thing DCEU can do. Marvel's feeling stale and by the numbers lately.

I enjoyed THE Suicide Squad way more than I expected - it's one of my favourite movies now.
The call to bring James Gunn in seems to have been a really good one, if lightning can strike twice on a sunny day with the guardian movies, after this movie the dude is just a good director in my book
Really enjoyed this film. Large portions of Harley Quinn scenes could be removed though as they play no significance to the plot. Idris smashed his role and I'd love to see more of him as this character
I really enjoyed this Suicide Squad, big improvement over the other version and it was nice to see a big film with no kind of agenda, compare it to the stale and boring Black Widow and its miles better, full of ideas and it felt like something different.
The whole ''Damsel in distress'' trope subversion was done obnoxiously though. For how much longer will Hollywood pretend like it's something refreshing to do, when it has been done numerous times and much better many many years ago.

I don't see how you can say that Gunn's passion _wasn't_ in the movie (at least in any substantial way). While it may not have had the emotional peaks of the Guardians films, it certainly didn't feel as formulaic and limited as them, either. Hardly anything about this film felt like studio interference or studio-mandated; it felt like Gunn unhinged through and through.
this whole movie is scene to scene formulaic starting with a Deadpool rip off ending with a woke 2 female finish after killing the 9 white guys... Guardians is a masterpiece compared to this movie. Dont be so enamored with rated r violence and pg jokes lol the plot only works hopping from convivence to convenience and even then its shit, efap has 9 hours of plot holes if your interested lol
This movie actually made me care about its characters. The Peacemaker and Rick Flag fight kept me on edge because I knew that either of them could die and I wanted both to live.
@@Hasbulla761 It made complete sense that he was the one to kick the bucket, fight did a great job of showing peacemaker was just a little bit better. If flag had survived it would have felt like he had protagonist armor after peacemaker's buildup throughout the film
The more stuff I see of Idris. The more I like him as an actor. I've seen him in wildly different roles over the years in all sorts of genres and he always does a great job.

I actually preferred Idris “Not Deadshot” over Will Smith’s Deadshot. Seemed like Idris was actually acting and portraying an actual character, versus Will Smith being Will Smith.

Some actors just play themselves in varying degrees, and are absolutely phenomenal at their craft. Case in point Denzel Washington. Not everyone has to be method like Daniel Day Lewis to be a great actor.

King Shark was surprisingly heartwarming and funny. Was this movie perfect? No, but it’s fun and it shows how DC should let their directors have full control instead of meddling with their work

Studios meddling in creative production has like a 0.001% success rate. Yet they continue to do it. It's the perfect example of people who need to put their ego aside and let the experts do the work and yet, can't. And sadly, it translates across all walks of life.
When he ran up behind the guard i was laughing for about 5 minutes, i found that so funny.
I still find it funny that Captain Boomerang was more useful in this movie’s first 5 minutes than he was in the entirety of the last Suicide Squad movie.

Regardless of quality, I'd definitely say James Gunn's heart was in it. When DC absorbed him after being temporarily fired by Marvel, they told him he could literally do anything he wanted. And of all things, he decided to make a Suicide Squad movie. Mainly because he was actually a huge fan of the original comic series. Props to him for making a gutsy move and good for Warner Bros for staying the fuck away and letting the man create.
David ayer must be pissed right now. WB completely tore apart his creative vision and ruined his movie, the film we got barely resembled the one that he made. But then James Gunn comes in and WB lets him do anything he wants without any interference. It's good they're learning from their past mistakes, but I really want to see the original director's cut of Ayer's movie, before they cut out the character development and added in the hot topic bullshit

I am unfamiliar with King Shark in the comics. I heard a rumor that some comic aficionados were a bit upset because King Shark in the comics is actually pretty smart. Kind of like what they did to Bane in Batman and Robin.
The command to "Deploy TDK", the tense, dramatic power-pose, and the immediate and total ineffectiveness of his superpower gave me a real chuckle.
He brought The Three Stooges to a gun fight XD

For me, TDK and his powers looked like they would've been really cool for action scenes and the actor Gunn got to play him is really good. So to just see that potentially cool character wasted on a dumb gag was disappointing.

Relatively big name actors getting killed off even though they seemed to have potential was legitimately surprising, and that sets the tone that you will actually see some characters you enjoy die in the movie, and no, it's not a fakeout death.

The way Idris yelped at the rats was hilarious. This movie was a hell of a lot of fun. I didn't mind the development slowdown. Flawed, yeah, but it's not like the torture 2016 was.
I enjoyed this film well enough, I sense that it will become overhyped in peoples descriptions because it wasn't a pile of dog poo like the previous one was, it didn't do that well in the box office though so I hope the studios don't use that as an excuse to go back to the woke nonsense

Honestly having seen this, I'd take Idris Elba over Will Smith any day. Absolutely nailed this role! It felt like Idris Elba actually played the character, while Will Smith played... well, Will Smith in a Deadshot costume.
To be fair to Will Smith he suffered from the first movie not being able to decide who was the "main character" as it seemed to shift between him and Harely. Both seemed to want the movie to revolve around them and their back story.
So instead of a fleshed out character, we got two more in depth people that still felt like side characters.

I think Will did a good job as deadshot, Idris also did great. I wanna see Will as deadshot, Idris as Bloodsport and John as Peace maker in one movie.

The only time I genuinely laughed was when Amanda Waller parodied her 'explaining the villains backstory' scene from the first Suicide Squad. She gave Peacemaker the *exact* same backstory as BloodSport with a completely deadpan, serious delivery. Brilliant

That's because you have absolutely no clue what this movie is all about. It's comic book made Tarantino style. A play with conventions and motives. It's made to be taken through special lenses. The professional movie critics, usually a joke, are right this time. It's a comedy gold when you realize that and watch the movie for what it really is.
And the bit with Elba about "unique abilities," his indignation at being so clearly disposable, and the way it set up their rivalry for the rest of the movie. Very well done.

I also really liked how the villain wasn’t just a dictatorship. It was a corrupt goverment . Bc as soon as the dictator is killed , some other evil basterd just takes over . Its a nice well thought out twist on the villain i havent seen since robocop . It shows you how in a struggling country there are many people to step into evil things just for money and powwer .
I definitely thought we were going to be preach at about how awesome Communism is. I was pleasantly surprised they didn't.

I usually hate when a movie makes a joke or a gag multiple times but I thought the polka dot man seeing his mom gag was actually pretty funny. Somewhat edgy humor in a movie today is a huge win.
It was a brilliant way to explore his character and make him understood to the audience

I really liked bloodsport instead of race swapping an iconic villain like Deadshot they took a D list villain and made him more prominent on his own merits. Also Idris performance was better because Will Smith’s ego won’t let him commit to being a villain while Idris was able to play a villain that had layers.
+1 on the acting, I'm sure will Smith could do it but I don't see him pulling of that scene in jail call with his daughter the way Idris did.
@@fleeplayTV All of the lines bloodsport had were originally deadshot. You can tell because there's some comedic lines and moments that were clearly written for Will Smith.
I first saw Idris Elba in Luther, and his character had more layers than an onion.

I think this is a great example of a movie who’s flaws don’t detract from the enjoyment that you get out of watching it, unlike the last Jedi. And in the end that’s really all that matters, being able to just have fun watching a movie is very rare nowadays but I had a good time.
Yup. This instalment of suicide squad was a nice little popcorn flick that was worth watching. A few laughs. Some decent action. No complaints. Would recommend.

This whole movie just sort of gave me a fun DND adventure vibe. From the "party" killing all the rebels on accident because they jumped to conclusions to the big boss and a slight but not groundbreaking twist at the end. Twists that turn characters against each other are always the most interesting. The Mummy (1999) sort of vibe. Fun, funny, and great characters.
It was great to because it subtly suggested to the audience that Waller was in some ways worse than the very villains she was blackmailing into national service

You can just watch movies within the comfort of your own home and if you're willing to dish out the cash, you can set up your own surround sound system with a 4k projector.

The last Suicide Squad was pretentious as hell. Edgy for no reason, no sense of awareness or irony. All under a PG-13 rating. They try to sell their story as "this is the real world, our world, all dark and gritty and there's crime and military and politics" and then oh, a f*cking ancient witch is the big bad. Really?

I love how the movie doesn't even try to make you empathize with Bloodsport because his daughter, given that it's clearly stated how of a shit father he is, even the man itself acknowledge he is a terrible influence for her, and by the end he manages to redeem his image in someway.
Not like in the original where you were meant to like the psychopathic hired mercenary because deep within him he's just a father caring for his daughter and more bullshit.
Even if it isn’t perfect, what I love about The Suicide Squad is how the movie handled its characters. Coming into this movie on my first watch, I was a little bit worried if it would basically become “Harley Quinn and Friends”. I was extremely happy that James Gunn allowed each character to have their chance to shine; and because of that, everyone I know who saw it had their own favorite character. Ratcatcher 2, King Shark and Bloodsport are my top 3 favorites, and I hope to see them return in more Suicide Squad movies and their own spin-offs. With that out of the way, I can definitely say that The Suicide Squad is my favorite movie of the year, so far! I hope Warner Bros can let James Gunn make more movies for DC, because there’s so much potential with what he can do next. #RestoreTheGunnVerse

The Harley and President part almost ruined the whole movie for me. The movie was doing a fucking GREAT job up until that point. The pacing hits a brick wall. I think if you cut that part out completely and speed up the part where they kidnap Dr. Who, the movie would be fantastic.
As in, never have El Presidente as a character, with the general guy always being the main villain, and cut directly from Harley being captured to her being tortured, fake-passing out, choking out the guard with her legs and escaping in a hail of bullets and bloodspray?
I liked that part. I thought it was funny. Shows that no matter what, you can’t trust Harley.
Yeah, while this was my favorite version of Harley, her mini side plot of romance with the president was awful. It felt so out of place that i almost stopped watching the movie. It felt like someone wrote that plot without reading the other parts of the script.

While I like Will Smith a lot, he wasn't good in the first suicide squad. Idris Elba does much more with a similar character.
Idris is one of those actors who got big a bit too late. He's 48 now, and starting to look older. He's going to age out of roles he could have nailed 10 years ago. Sucks.

Will Smith always plays Will Smith. It was like Eddie Murphy playing Rudy Ray Moore. All I kept seeing was Eddie Murphy in bad makeup and hair. Idris Elba played an actual character.

At this point Elba is more entertaining than Will Smith. Smith at his height was a massive screen draw, but over the years lost his funny bone, takes himself way to seriously, and doesn't seem remotely like the same person.

He's got some strange hobbies and quirks, but he's the only one having any fun, while everybody else is kind of dead inside (except maybe Shazam who is like the youngest sibling that got caught up in the family drama)
This movie, Aquaman, and Shazam, felt more like the way DC comics feel than any other of their movies.
And by that I mean: bright, fun, campy at times, and entertaining.

Weasel drowning immediately before the movie even really begins is one of the funniest things I've seen in a while. Such a perfect way to set the tone for the movie.

I think Gunn did an amazing job with this one. The visuals, soundtrack and the characters were off the charts, and although some of the writing wasn't always spot on, I've got to say it has been a while since I have enjoyed a movie as I've enjoyed this one.
While I think the scene with Harley and the Dictator was a bit too long, I think it did a lot for her character progression, and was at least relevant to the story by having her shoot the main Dictator.
I was feeling it go too long too, but the end of it paid it off big time. It was a grade-A death scene.
What was with the birds getting flamed after that? I felt it was going on for too long too but overall didn't mind it... until it led to the birds. Was it to demonize that colonel dude or whatever? Felt unnecessary.

True it did wonders for Harley's character, but I wonder what the overall effect was with the dictator's death. Sure there was a "power grab" but I'm sure the old dictator would've used his army the same way as the new dictator if he learned the SS were destroying Starro. The dictators are functionally the same in their actions in this movie.

To be fair to Will Smith, he was actually supposed to star in this movie as Deadshot, but his filming schedules clashed, so they brought in Idris Elba instead.

Actually I loved the movie, one of my favorites of DCEU. The movie makes you care about fleshed out characters and it doesn't take itself seriously. Really walks the thin line of being bad taste, and doesn't care. It's more like the old school James Gunn in Super mixed with some of the Guardians phase. And doesn't try to be gritty, dark, serious, etc. It's like those fun 90's action movies. Didn't try to be something it isn't, didn't try to build romantic relationships between characters and didn't force or preach you about anything. I didn't saw more than 15 min from the first one, but I had a blast with this one.

I loved Rick Flag in this movie. He was an effective foil to Peacemaker's psycho patriotism. Especially at the end, he shows that while he is fighting for his country, he won't follow them blindly. An infinitely more rewarding character arc than "oh no my girlfriend is a witch, i am sad".
Peacemaker was right.

I really wished that "dimensional disease" thing came into play against Starro.

I think the best writing in this movie was during the fight between Flag and Cena, with each representing a different side of patriotism. Flag as the well meaning soldier trying to protect his country, and Cena as the mindless drone that does whatever the government tells him, no matter how immoral.
That was some genuinely good writing and it made me really relate to Flag, and mourn his death.
This movie was such a pleasant surprise James Gun just nailed it, Ratcatcher and King Shark were my favorite but goddamn Idris Elba makes any movie 1000x better!

Rat-Catcher II, Polk Dot Man and King Shark really grew on me and I like them. I am sick of Harley Quinn, years of comic fandom have turned her from a funny sidekick from BTAS to this super powered death machine, except she has no powers, no gear, no training, she just "Crazy", that is not a power.

I had never heard of them, but ended up truly caring. Great movie, it's only failt for me was lacking a bit of "show, don't tell" (the flashback in the bus was great, but why tell me a guy shot Superman without showing it?!)
As soon as her escape scene started, I thought, "Oh Christ, they're gonna have this 120lb woman kill dozens of trained soldiers single handedly, aren't they?" And sure enough.... oh, except they added some special effects to distract from the choreography.
In a movie with a talking humanoid shark and a Godzilla-sized starfish, watching Margot Robbie (yet again) outfight/kill groups of grown men was what dented my suspension of disbelief.
When she was chained up and lifted herself and a soldier 1.5 times get size from the ground, I was willing to buy into some level of super-strength, and with that the following fights (ignoring that no soldier catches her with a bullet) were enjoyable

I thoroughly enjoyed it. It does bog down with the silly Harley subplot. I was surprised by some of the splatter! John Cena was fantastic.

This film definitely does NOT deserve to be labeled a “flop” it was Miles above the original and I’ve already seen it Twice in theaters when I could Barely power through the previous once
"Flop" refers to how it performs in terms of viewership and net income, not quality. Something can be much better than something else and still completely flop where the other succeeded. The first Suicide Squad made a lot of money despite being utter garbage. So far this one looks like it'll struggle to make back its budget, which would make it a flop. Maybe positive reviews like this will help it dig itself out of a hole, and of course there will be endless excuses about HBO Max streaming to muddy the waters in terms of how well the film actually did, but at the moment it's looking extremely floppy.

YES! That was such a twist! And funny! And it's even telegraphed a little at the beginning with the pleasant exchange between the two guards (one goes to get the other coffee and the first guy says "thanks" or something). But it's still completely unexpected. The action takes you right out of it. Such a great way for the movie to set tone.

The left traditionally see it as a good thing because you are awake and aware enough to combat social injustices like racism and sexism, among other things. People on the right tend to see it as people using the term woke as an excuse to put certain agendas which can cause further division among people. People have described some woke content in movies to be very anti male and anti white in order to try to set equality. I am merely stating this movie shows equality amongst gender and race without needing to push down any race or gender in order to do so.
I should further clarify that people on left or right, or with no leaning towards either way, can feel many different ways about the term woke. So that I am not generalizing or stereotyping. But in a lot of cases each side of the political fence has taken a certain side in regards to that word.

I love the idea of this King Shark meeting Batman (Batfleck or Battison), and Batman slowly realising that while KS is dangerous, he's also remarkably easy to handle if you make friends with him.
I liked how John Cena actually *acted* in this movie. This is easily his best role.
You can see his remorse after the Flagg scene and Ratcatcher , I was surprise for the very first time too
I was hoping knowing his lackluster performance in Fast 9 was a result of him putting all that effort into the guy wearing a metal soup bowl on his head. Happy to have seen that was indeed the case, and deserved his A-Game way more than the former.
He's finally playing a character who is not himself but sadly he becomes China's prisoner

I had extremely low expectations for this movie and almost didn't watch it. I was basically peer preassured into it by my friends who wanted to watch it. Im so glad i watched it. I had a blast the characters grew on me massively especially harley who i couldn't stand in suicide squad
Me too I watched it at a friend’s birthday party I hadn’t watched the first one and figured this one would be as bad due to what I had heard about the first one, watched it, was pleasantly surprised and I would even watch it again
The acrobatics/gymnastics part during the prison escape did a great job of highlighting her archtype in a superhero type way
That's almost my experience to a "T." Given how god awful the first one was, plus how bad the trailer for this one was (they only showed the cheesy jokes and they were out of context), I expected nothing from this movie. But damn was it SOOOO fun and entertaining!
FR they made Harley so lovable here, and they made her badass without it feeling forced.

The ending battle scene with Rat-catcher was so beautiful. The music, taika waititi's one liner and the imagery all lined up so well. Who knew suicide squad would bring all the feels.

Really enjoyed this film. Large portions of Harley Quinn scenes could be removed though as they play no significance to the plot. Idris smashed his role and I'd love to see more of him as this character
I really enjoyed this Suicide Squad, big improvement over the other version and it was nice to see a big film with no kind of agenda, compare it to the stale and boring Black Widow and its miles better, full of ideas and it felt like something different.
100%. The Suicide Squad was so much better than Black Widow.
the movie totally criticised America's history of foreign affairs though, there's totally an agenda (not that I mind, I'm just saying) ;)
The whole ''Damsel in distress'' trope subversion was done obnoxiously though.
For how much longer will Hollywood pretend like it's something refreshing to do,

@@goodial to be fqir though, at least it’s something that stays true in the comics, where the Suicide Squad is also sometimes used to erase and cover up the screw ups and dark history of the government.

I don't see how you can say that Gunn's passion _wasn't_ in the movie
(at least in any substantial way). While it may not have had the
emotional peaks of the Guardians films, it certainly didn't feel as
formulaic and limited as them, either. Hardly anything about this film
felt like studio interference or studio-mandated; it felt like Gunn
unhinged through and through.
No He Just said that He though Gunn's passion isn't in the movie when He watch the trailer but change His mind when He sees the movie
this whole movie is scene to scene formulaic starting with a Deadpool rip off ending with a woke 2 female finish after killing the 9 white guys... Guardians is a masterpiece compared to this movie. Dont be so enamored with rated r violence and pg jokes lol the plot only works hopping from convivence to convenience and even then its shit, efap has 9 hours of plot holes if your interested lol

This movie actually made me care about its characters. The Peacemaker and Rick Flag fight kept me on edge because I knew that either of them could die and I wanted both to live.
Yeah, I was sad at that fight, I want both of them to survive.

@@Hasbulla761 It made complete sense that he was the one to kick the bucket, fight did a great job of showing peacemaker was just a little bit better. If flag had survived it would have felt like he had protagonist armor after peacemaker's buildup throughout the film

Felt bad for Rick Flag. An honorable guy trying to do the right thing but he forgot that he’s just as expendable as the crazies on his team.
In my humble opinion, this movie was worth the price of admission simply to hear Sylvester Stallone say, "Nom-noms?"
The more stuff I see of Idris. The more I like him as an actor. I've seen him in wildly different roles over the years in all sorts of genres and he always does a great job.
Easily one of my favorite actors. After watching him in Luther I was hooked

Bloodsport and Peacemaker's scenes were just gold. I could watch an entire "Buddy Cop" style show with those two.

Just to spice it up, I want Alan Tudyk in there as some normal guy who is just randomly getting caught up in their games.
Keep in mind he's also a rapper, a DJ, and an MMA fighter.
