    This was super helpful and a great crash course. Also, I could not find much on RUclips where the architect actually used old buildings like churches as examples and that is EXACTLY what I wanted. I have been looking at English country home's architectural drawings and was having trouble with some aspects of them. THANK YOU! If you ever post more about old buildings, especially Georgian/Regency Era buildings I will totally watch those too! P.S. I like your idea of comparing old cathedral floor plans with photos of the actual building.

    I think it’s important to understand the full role of an architect, and steer away from “architects makes things pretty” because that is not the case. Architects are responsible for making spaces functional, while catching the eye of the inhabitant(s) by making the structure aesthetically pleasing.

    Oh my gosh. thank you so much for helping me understand how walls and windows looks like in the floor plan. I'm a Mechanical Engineering student in the Philippines, and I'm currently taking airconditioning system and design subject. Our prof gave us a quiz about heat load, and we needed to compute for the area of partitions. The glass walls are included in the computation and we don't have any idea about how glass walls and concrete walls looks like. It really makes me depressed.. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with students like me. 😭

I'm still deciding which route I want to take and structural engineering looks like it is but which employment is it that allows you to go over the floor plans and correct them before they set out with the project?

    *watches video once and thinks I'm an architect*
    Seriously though this was well put together. It felt like you were rushing a bit at the end but that's just me. Ultimately I'm just here to watch your vids (any and all of them). On another note, based on the comments I'm glad to know automotive technicians aren't the only ones that bash on engineers haha. Two different types of engineering (civil and mechanical) but same type of "criticism," for lack of better words. I know that as a mechanical engineer (and engineers in general) we have to make things efficient, reliable for the user, and environmentally friendly. The final design outcome depends on the design goal/priority and the tech available at the time. Also also, I liked your look in this vid (random fyi (: ).

    • @alan_m91
      @alan_m91 3 года назад

      @@UnravelingArchitecture Yeah that is about right with my field. Engineers have to also be creative but in short, the idea has to be practical. Haha yeah there's a lot of applied physics but for me that's what makes it cool. Knowing how something physically works and being able to improve it by means of math, simulations, and testing (vs guessing/trial and error). I didn't see the intro as controversial but like you said there are definitely those side comments out there. My dad is a mechanic and I have friends that are also mechanics so I hear the general stereo type comments here and there. So I know what you mean haha.
      You're welcome, but I will say it did distract me from realizing Brutus wasn't in the background

    Hi Natalie! Glad to see you're recovered from COVID. Can I ask five follow up questions please?
    1. @4:41 Why would the swing angle of a closet door be less? Do you mean that the closet door won't swing out fully?
    2. @8:01: What does "this arc shape was designed to match the turn radius of these cars" mean? That design doesn't feel intuitive.
    3. Please simplify @12:20? I don't understand the curves, and what the red outline means.
    4. Clearer floor plans would improve your video. Can you analyze the floor plans in www.amazon.com/Architecture-Today-Houses-Manel-Guti%C3%A9rrez/dp/8499369715, because it contains, complicated, floor plans of fancy but good-looking houses, along with pictures of the houses and elevation drawings. As you advised, we must practice, but we must crank up the difficulty of the floor plans. I'm reading this book now. UPenn's library must have a copy?

    • @UnravelingArchitecture
      @UnravelingArchitecture  3 года назад +1

      Hey there! Great questions:
      1. drawings need a sense of hierarchy. If you look at closet or a pantry door in your house, chances are they are slightly smaller. I typically drawing existing swing angles at 45 degrees and new doors at a 90degree angle for instance. The degree you draw your swing at really does not affect if it "swings out" fully. It will!! It just depends on how you draw it!!
      2. Hahah yes, this is a Le Corb house. Le Corb did a lot for the modernism movement in architecture. Le Corb studied his cars there, and calculated the ideal turn angle. The level 1 of this house was designed so you can gracefully just swing around the arc of the building and park you car, then head right upstairs. He was really experimenting with the flow of circulation in that building, and you can see that even with his extensive usage of his ramping systems in a lot of his projects!
      3. the read outline is the section. I was trying to show how a plan and section work together. A section is almost like a slice of cake. A plan is a transverse cut, lifting the roof off, and you have a bird's eye view to below! But both the plan and section will always always work hand in hand! You almost get a wire framed building if you were to connect the plans and sections together.
      4. I cannot analyze plans in that book due to copyright laws and I don't want to get sued (lol). But I am making another floor plan reading video! Any specific building types you want me to look at?

    • @UnravelingArchitecture

      There are several wall types
      WT-01 could stand for wall tile 01, depending on how the architect drew it. Whatever abbreviation was used, correlates to a finish that could be found in your finish schedule.
      Numbers also found in different parts of your documentation could also signify different wall compositions. FX-XX (Xs are placeholders) the F typically stands for a furring wall for instance..
      If it’s SX-XX, the S typically stands for stud wall. But this isn’t necessarily universal. Moreso up to the preference of the architect who drew it.
      I can’t really tell if that answered your question cus there was no really good description of what specific numbers you’re referring to. But hope that helps

    A good architect will care about how it works and will design it to stand up and function, not just look pretty. Thats why the training is 7 years. But make sure they are actually an architect (which is a legally protected title like Doctor) not a designer, who is not required to have any skills experience or qualification. Structural engineers will only design understand how the structure works. Mechanical and Electrical Consultants will work on the heating, ventilation and lighting. The architect is the lead consultant who pulls it all together.
