We just bought an older home in Hockley, TX. The home was built in 1994 by the man who lived in it. It’s a crazy lay out. There’s only one bathroom on the bottom floor which happens to be the master . So all guest have to use it. All contractors are stumped on how to add a powder room to the bottom floor. The house has NO closets other than the ones in the bedroom. Every time we try to correct one problem, we have to correct ten others problems to fix the one we started with. I have been completely lost trying to figure things out and have the lay out make sense. This video has been a God send to me. I wish you were here to help. Thank you so much for your detailed explanation. You have made a difference for this tired homeowner.

Thank you for doing this. As a builder, a square or rectangle shape w/o a lot of pop-outs is very cost-efficient. I like to locate kitchens in proximity to attached garages (so you don't have to drag groceries through the house). Hallways are expensive, wasted space (minimize where you can - unless cost is no object). I like to locate laundry rooms near (not in) the garage - away from any living space (noisy). A good plan (for me) is to enter the house through the garage, go through the laundry room, then into the back of the kitchen. Of course, there is a formal front entry and a rear entry off the kitchen/breakfast nook.

Thank you all for the feedback! Just wanted to clarify to those who are concerned that I did not address certain parameters which would definitely be addressed in a real world application.... This is a VERY rudimentary overview of how the floor plan process works. I eliminated A LOT of parameters including most aspects of a usual program. I believed that adding information about sunlight, circulation, acoustics, privacy, site maps, etc. would be too advanced for this basic of a video. Of course this video does not cover the full extent of developing a floor plan, but I think that’s implied.

I stumbled upon your video and it brought back great memories of studying to become an interior designer. I ended up staying in the industry for a short time before going into something else, but I have fond memories of that time. It is interesting how each person would interpret the same needs and floorplan completely differently. For instance, I would have eliminated the wasted space created by the dead end hallway near the bedrooms and used it to create a closet for the adjacent bedroom, or extended the bathroom space instead.
Thank you for the great explanation, it makes me realize how little time my professors spent teaching us the mechanics of designing a floorplan from scratch. We had the same tools, just don't remember seeing the process come to life the way you did here.

See i thought it wouldn’t have made sense in a safety point of view, if a fire starts in the kitchen, it will spread and everyone down that hallway will not be able to get out unless they jump out of a window. I was thinking maybe introduce another door at the end of that hallway or by making a hallway that goes between bedroom 1 and the master bedroom. That way they have a safer exit than all the way on the other side of the house

Great process. Everyone has their own design ideas and preferences. This is not an open plan. All spaces have no effective cross ventilation due to the hallway running through. Also such a long curving hallway could feel cramped. But again, every designer has their own style and the reason for the placing has been explained well

    Wauw this was so good!
I really want to study Interior Design Styling without any knowledge.
But before I start (or even get accepted) I want to know more about it.
Just by watching this video it made so much sense and it's so clear now!
This really helped me a lot, really, thank you a lot for sharing your process with us!

This is the most useful vid on floor planning I have ever seen! Would you consider making one on two-storey houses? I'm a complete amateur who you would love to come up with my own vision before I take it to an architect and I'm struggling with room alignment (I might need to include some load-bearing interior walls and these have to align from top to bottom...).

I've been watching interior design videos for years, but this is the most thorough video I've ever seen that explains the whole planning process from start to finish! The matrix and circle techniques are so simple yet useful! I've seen a lot of videos about design "rules" (such as how big of an area rug you need), but not ones like this that really force you to plan for the relationships between spaces.

Phew, I now have a better understanding of how to use the triangle and the furniture template (with confidence)....😊

You’ve communicated and illustrated the process of preparing and executing the floor plan very well. As an interior architect myself- not currently officially practicing- I was curious to watch your video that had popped up in my home page suggestions and glad that I did. It was refreshing to watch a very different approach as you explore ideas and possibilities to plan with that I imagine I can incorporate with my own process. Which differs with the initial stage focused on the concept: assessing the site, how the client wants to experience their spaces, their budget and their priorities of space usage to align with their life choices visualising from the perspective view to form the program for the project. The translation into the overview floor plan follows that. Adapting some of your technique will be a great way to challenge my approach; changing the context to play with will be fun. Thank you.
I’d love to see how you design for more complex or unique project briefs; a difficult site, tight specifications, restrictions etc for residential, retail or hospitality. Hopefully that is a possibility that interests you!

I have no experience with interior design or anything like that because I’ve always been a character designer. But as a creator I’ve always wanted to branch out into architecture and interior design for my stories, drawings, and/or comics, and this has helped MONUMENTALLY. This video alone has already helped me structure better floor plans and I am so relieved that it’s actually possible for me to get into interior design OUTSIDE of my characters

Hello Mimi, I've been in design now for almost 10 years and I have some comments to everyone who watches this video. Keep in mind, you never want that dead wasted space at the end of the hallway to the bedroom. You should try to connect the bedroom over the the hallway ends with the door. Second a perfect almost square home is rare, when practicing you should try to keep in mind that they will be odd portions and sizes so practice with random floor plans online!
    Good luck everyone.

I just finished with my Master's studies in this field and I have no doubt had some instructors that have made this process feel and seem really daunting...and not to take away from the level of importance it is to take in all building factors...but you definitely made it simple and attainable. I think you should send this video to every architectural and interior design tutor in every university in the world , in order to make sure that they teach properly these basic skills, which I learnt in BAU in Beirut in 1983. However when I moved to British University/Polytechnic they never mentioned these kind of zoning and when I discussed its importance they refused to know about it, because they thought it is too rigid. They were influenced by Archigram and caring about the portfolio image more than anything else. No theory ,whatsoever, in design they wanted to teach or follow. It is becoming very subjective the teaching of design, and any wishy washy tutor forces his or her ideas on first and second year students. But, in general, it is good to have different groups of students experimenting different theories and styles.

@Some Random Person I guess it's true that it takes a lot more for a professional woman to prove their worth than their male counterparts; that's just how it is but that doesn't mean is impossible. My advice to you is to put in the hard work, keep perfecting your skills and learn new ones, be efficient, be responsible, do your work right and people is gonna notice even if you work with all male coleagues like myself. Don't let people talk you out of pursuing your dreams. Take it from someone that just recently received a promotion for my dream job, Head of Architecture in an international AEC company, and 5 years ago as a recent graduate I couldn't even get a second interview mostly for not having any real experience in the field so that'd be my final advice: get as much experience as you can while studing, it is so so important. 😊 good luck!!
