New Cannonball shifting truck video ;
• Tom Siembieda - 1959 GMC Thanks !
Every time I watch this video it puts a big ole smile on my face and I know it does the same for you! What a Nice Truck
@Collateralcoffee then don't watch it
Gorgeous
Youre welcome. If interested Detriot is a division of General Moters. Thier first 2 stroke diesel was called the 53 seties, next was 71 series and finally the silver92. Todays Detriots are 4 stroke and called 60 series. It is one of the first ECM engines put into on highway trucks. Enjoy that old Jimmy not many of them left.
The 71 series came out before the 53 series. It powered many military of WWII. I don't know for sure, hut it may have debuted in the 30's. The 53 series was released for the 58 model year, and debuted in the fall of '57.
+madtownmadman You are right the first model released was the 6-71 N went into production around 1938 and did great service in WW2 powering anything from Navy landing boats, through tanks, trucks, pumps, generators anything that needed power probably had a 6-71 bolted on the front.
Not quite, it's largely a Mercedes design but they are built at the same plant in Redford.
I drove one of these with a 12 speed manual transmission when I was just 10 years old on the farm i was raised on when we put up hay
YES,SIR, THIS WAS THE VERY FIRST TRACTOR THAT I DROVE ON THE ROAD TO A 35 YEAR CAREER OF DRIVING THE BIG RIG'S... IT WAS A 1959 "860" DETROIT DIESEL...THIS EXACT MODEL, COLOR AND ALL.I HAULED STEEL FROM PA, TO NEW ENGLAND .. A SWEET OLD TRUCK. THANK YOU FOR PUTTING THIS ON HERE..I HAD LIVED OUTSIDE OF BOSTON AT THE TIME,,,"FOND" MEMORIES.. WOW.!...GOD BLESS AMERICA..
Here is the update video and thanks for watching and congratulations on a long safe career. ruclips.net/video/Fq198U125oc/видео.html
E.RICHARD GREEN Mr. Green, what was the whistle used for? Thank you, GS
I remember those cannonball GMC tractors in the 1950s. Here on the east coast of the US most of the trucks were IH, White, Mack, Autocar, Diamond T, Reo, GMC, Ford & Dodge. It was rare to see a Peterbilt, KW or Freightliner here. They were western trucks back then. Later Diamond T & Reo merged becoming Diamond Reo, Freightline partnered with White & became White Freightliner & I think it was only a cab over truck then. The big sellers here in the 1950's were IH, White, Mack, Autocar & GMC. When I occasionally got west of the Mississippi, that is when you began to see KW & Pete. It was also the days when the ICC restricted trucking companies to certain states. When deregulation happened under President Reagan, it eventually put many of the east coast trucking companies out of business. McLean (big user of GMC tractors), Hennis, Red Line, Pilot, Mason-Dixion etc etc. They just couldn't compete when they lost their dedicated territory & gained a large number of new competitors who expanded into the east from other parts of the country. The famous two cycle engine was badged "GMC" then but if you spec it in an IH or White etc, they called it a Detroit but it was the same engine. Most of the non GMC/Detroit engine trucks had Cummins. Cat wasn't in it then. Mack of course had a Mack engine. It was easy to tell if it was a GMC/Detroit coming down the road but after you were on the road long enough, it also became easty to tell the different in the sound of a Cummins and a Mack.
Great history lesson. I really like American trucks.

The deregulation of the trucking industry began with the Motor Carrier Act of 1980, which was signed into law by President Carter on July 1, 1980.
You forgot the big boy " Brockway"
You obviously put one heck of a lot of effort into your truck. What a beauty!!!
That is the most beautiful truck I've ever seen you did a magnificent job
Thanks !
Thanks for the look at a GREAT truck.
Mike
Oh man what a beauty! Amazing paint job also, you can see orange when the sun hit us just right!
A work of Art, nothing less!
Two words: video stabilizer. Other than that, awesome video, thanks for sharing your beautiful build.
Beautiful restoration! My favorite truck!!
Love the truck and those old Detroit Diesels. I have one question, though; does it have a jake brake? 🤣🤣
DDAVO7, Question is answered in the video.
Wow, so clean and beautiful. I have an urge to drive it.
Many thanks to you for your video and lovely GMC Detroit Truck! Very interesting! Diesel 2T have a sound giving the impression to run much faster and reactive than 4T. I'm not so found in engines but I don't understand why 2T diesel are not so common in Europe. Really I don't know. My Grandfather was a truck driver in the 40, 50, 60 's. He had and drove trucks like Lancia Esatau, OM, Fiat 190, Fiat 690,etc. Unfortunately I don't have videos about them. Very nice breathtaking USA Country landscape! So nice, lovely and quiet!
I really really like this truck. And the sound is awesome. The only thing that could be better, would be tandem rear axels. This is a beautiful truck, how does it ride. It probably needs a removable air seat.
Nice restoration job, love that old 671 jimmy
..why there is no more such designs in production..this is so cool..
Nice truck. That Detroit sound is one I'd know anywhere. One thing though, you drive it, it WILL leak oil.
Very cool old GMC👍👍
Pretty mother fucking cool ass truck!
That is one sweet sounding diesel. The truck looks immaculate.
How can anyone dislike this video, awesome awesome awesome.... love this truck
wind noise
All that wind..
because it has a flat bed
the drive over part was the best.
That's the nicest truck I've ever seen love the look and how tiny it is what would the price of a truck like that ???
what a beautiful machine
Thanks !
Just imagine drive in this across the country heat snow everything those guys must have been pretty tough
a thing of beauty...
Beautiful rig!
Thank you
When I was a kid I used see these everywhere. I loved the way they looked. This is a beautiful restoration. Did the steam whistle come with the truck or did you add that? Were you releasing condensation from the air tank? I was waiting for you to close the tank.
+Brad Taylor I added the whistle and yes I was draining the tanks. Thanks for looking , I appreciate it !
+rileydog362 what a shining beauty ! Congrats, you are a lucky one !
It's not a supercharger, it's a blower. They are not the same thing. Superchargers increase the pressure and density of air for combustion. Blowers provide air for scavenging. They are necessary on large two-cycle diesel engines to purge exhaust gases and to fill the cylinders with fresh air for combustion. They do not increase air pressure like superchargers do on gasoline engines.
the rootes type blower used on all Detroit 2 cycle engines do increase boost to the combustion chamber, relatively low pressure around 5 psi..but like you said the main function is to savenge and purge air into the cyls at a low pressure but still above atmospheric .
The blower is really just an air mover. It is not a supercharger in the traditional sense.
Where do you think the 471, 671, and 871 "superchargers" came from in the 60s? A supercharger is a blower. On a 71 series engine, at rated speed, it is running around 12 psi above atmosphere. That means 26psi at sea level.
Those are modified. A blower is NOT a supercharger. What that means is a device that raises the intake charge significantly above atmospheric pressure. A turbo was originally called a turbo supercharger. The blower on a 2 stroke diesel is not a power adder. It is there so the engine will run at all since it has no way of producing any suction to move intake air in and exhaust out. The blower facilitates that but does not generate significant pressure above atmospheric. That is why later the added turbochargers which did. The blower is a glorified air mover. On a car when they called them that - it was in reference to their original source and use.
The blower/supercharges that were used in the sixties on V8 gas engines were straight take offs from 2 stroke Detroits. The only thing modified was the adapter plate to fit it to the intake manifold. I agree, that a 2 stroke diesel will not operate without a blower, but to say that the blower doesn't "boost" the intake charge is incorrect. 12 psi is almost double the pressure of the atmosphere at sea level. I'm sure anyone would consider that significant. The roots type blowers/superchargers are all positive displacement air pumps that increase pressure directly proportional to rpm. Turbochargers were added to the supercharger setup to decrease the power needed to turn a larger supercharger. The same effect can be had with staged turbochargers.
Why do people have to rev these old diesels like they're a racing engine? What's the point? It's made to pull a load down the highway, not run a 10 second quarter mile. These old 2 strokes are getting rare enough as it is, then you have people like this trying to throw rods for fake internet points.
Those old 2-stroke Detroit's ran best when revved up to maximum governed speed. That was simply the nature of the beast.
I was unaware that there were Jake Brakes back in the DAY, I never got used to them, always screwed up my shifting, I didn't use the Clutch, just for stopping and starting!
+Apocyl Doomer Next time you drive, try using the key to start and stop. I've been doing it for years. I love it. No intention of ever going back to carrying a clutch around.
lol
We had a picture of an old Peterbuilt hanging on the wall at our shop , it had a 318 Detroit . Every morning we had to wipe oil off of the floor under the picture . That's a very nice restoration , very clean job . Looks like a 238 6-71 engine .Enjoyed the video . I recently rebuilt an older 238 with the external fuel lines .
+ALABAMAHEADHUNTER Thanks for looking !
2 Valve head? Once upgraded from a couple of those in the 80s to the 'dogbone' 4 valve internal fuel galley heads.
Gorgeous
really nice classic truck dude love the whistle paint is sweet it all looks great i love the classics the resto came out really good tanks and all enjoy crusing in that cool ass rig dude !!!
+Raymond J Thank you !
Oh that's nice! Was it once a tractor for a trailer or always a bobtail? I would love to see a fifth wheel on that with an old 1959 box trailer on that one! Looking good and great look at your truck! Thank You! Oh yes, what transmission is in this? I don't remember you saying. That screaming Detroit sounds great!
I like the aluminum buds that you have on it now a lot better. Great video
Lovely truck, looks fantastic, would love to take it to the supermarket, They used detroit 671 diesels on the wwll british valentine tank, lovely engine Modern trucks are so boring.
Wow whst a nice truck
I like that whistle a lot....what model is that whistle exactly? I'm guessing it's a 3 tone?
+Daniel Alberty Hi; It is a Hancock model 4700n there is also one without the cone around it that is model 4700. They were made in the 1950's to sound like a steam locomotive . They no longer meet standards for railroad use and turn up on ebay once in a while. Thanks for looking . The video below has more whistling in it.
at 7 mins I could record that idle sound and play it next to my bed at night to put me to sleep . forget about the sounds of nature .
I just subscribed to your channel.
This is how you get at the engine he says!?😂Cool as hell, but fuck working on that thing!
The ultimate COE with a 2 stroke Detroit. You have done a fine job. A piece of art that will last.
awesome
I can't even put into words how much Id love to own this truck to use as my RV puller.
This truck rocks!
A handsome truck you have.
they tried a Detroit diesel in the tm Bedford it was OK plenty of power but no economy 4/5to the gallon it did not last long
That is one good looking and sounding truck, not sure I would want to put any serious miles behind the wheel, but damn it looks good.
vvvery nice
Could somebody explain the significance of the switch that was turned on & off after starting the engine?
I don't think it has any significance on that particular engine.
I like the subject matter but can't stay with the wind noise.
This looks like a engine maintenance nightmare. Beautiful truck tho
Whats the up keep on this baby? I would so drive it to work lol. I got a co-worker that drivers a kodiak that has plates that says "KUSH" on them lol. She's a middle age woman.
Vey cool.....Why did the truck have a whistle?
I love that old truck only thing i see wrong with it is its not mine lol😁
It's a beautiful truck, but too bad it doesn't have a 5th wheel on it so you could hook a trailer to it and do what it was designed to do, which is haul freight.
Check out the newer videos . It has a 5th wheel now . Thanks for watching
Oh yeah, someone loves that jake switch an glad it has a micro switch just to keep those valves happy. Picked just about the noisiest engine out of detroit but thats okay
Blower not a supercharger does not make boost
When your driving these old trucks you really are working. They don't have power accessories . They are all man power.
Looks like a dryer vent being used for air duct haha
True but it has been replaced by rubber flex hose . Thanks for noticing ! LOL !!
the guys who drove those trucks were hard core truckers
Nice walk around, nothing like the ring of a 6-71 and Alpine Green.
We used to call it 'dumpster green' , but I loved that sound ..
Nice vehicle
My uncle had one of these without the sleeper
It as almost new when he was almost given it by the government
It had a dump bed on it when the government had it
It tipped over backwards and couldn’t be used so they sold it
My uncle took the dump bed off put a 5th wheel hitch on it and used it for years
Thanks for the video
fond memories for me of my youth
What a cool machine!
no need for fishbowl camera, no need for ALL CAPS
+rileydog362 *How does the compression release on the Detroit 6L71 tie into the fuel-injection governor?* The Jacobs hardware obviously is smart enough to restore compression before the engine flames out.
You remove the buffer screw and replace it with the Jacobs on - off switch which has a buffer built into it .As soon as you touch the throttle it shuts off the jake and also when it hits idle at around 500 RPM it shuts it off .
wow. that was a beautiful truck
Love the sound of a Driptroit. Had an old Pettibone backhoe with a 371 and I would love to hear that thing scream all day
very nice unit the sound is great
Lindo caminhão, bem conservado, parabéns pela máquina............!!!!!!
Firmeza bro !!!!!!!!!
Antony Mantovani THANKS FOR LOOKING !
Cold start, rev it up, throw the Jake! Engines a beast though, she can take it.

Jean Claude Lig N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z
+charlietow what you did there i see it
Cold start? Who just drove it there to start filming? Detroit's don't cool off in 2 hours
I hear a bad injector. I'd pull them out and have them checked/cleaned.
If you need to change the motor how does that work? Do you have to remove the cab?
I just replaced the head , cylinders , and liners a month ago. First you remove the passenger door , the seat and engine cover , then the floor comes out and you go at it. Not easy but not really that bad either. Used a fork lift to lift the head off .
Detroit's don't have super chargers they are blowers as they are a pressurized block
+Andrew Tiefry are you confused with a super charger and a turbo charger? A super charger is a blower
+Andrew Tiefry The blower is used to force the spent fuel out of the engine , its called scavenging , without it the engine would not run . adding a turbo would be supercharging so to speak . Love the sound of these engine's
+Dan Holmes adding a turbocharger is turbocharging it not supercharging it
The blower has a different purpose here. A supercharger is used to pressurize the intake air. On a two-stroke diesel engine, when the cylinder bottoms out, the intake ports open at the bottom while the exhaust valve opens at the top. The purpose of the blower is not to pressurize the air, but to push fresh air into the cylinder through the intake ports while pushing the exhaust gases out of the exhaust valve at the same time.
THANKS FOR STRAIGHTENING THIS OUT--SO MANY PEOPLE THINK THE DETROITS WERE SUPER CHARGED BECAUSE THE BLOWERS WERE USED ON SO MANY DOUBLE A FUEL DRAGSTERS AND SO FORTH BUT THEY WERE NEVER SUPER CHARGED EVEN WITH A TURBOCHARGER--FROM AN "OLD DETROIT MECHANIC"
Wowzer real nice truck
That's a nice rig. I'd take THAT to Home Depot and show all those guys with their ridiculous lifted 4x4s (not ridiculous because they're lifted or 4x4, but because they are never, ever, ever taken off road. I mean, why even bother?) what a real working truck looks like.
Except after a few months with me it wouldn't be so shiny. Like I said, working truck. It's probably better off staying where it is.
I use to see these when I was a child. Beautiful.
Mee too , they were all over the place . thanks for looking.
Nice ole girl. One of many "old schoolers", 10-4. She is sweet for sure. Do ya gottuh name for the truck?
Detroits always sucked, leaked, noisey, & gutless. Awesome video, 10-4. I like the model on the dash. What transmission setup do ya have & what the rearend gearing?
Wow....that's a really beautiful truck!
Thanks , it is currently getting an air ride rear end , new front axle and polished wheels all around . I will do a new video in a few months when done. Thanks for watching !
rileydog362 Nice!!!!
Not to get to personal but what does something like this go for?
Great stuff. Thanks for sharing.
What a beautiful work of art. Great restoration. Best sounding diesel engine ever made.
Thank you so much !
Beautiful From Top to Bottom!!!
beautiful truck! thumbs up
Does anybody know which company came up with the first cab-over truck??
nice looking truck
smooth. We had not many GMC's n Europe but sill... We mostly had Chevy's up till 5.5 tons. Heavy loaders were Mack's. And the Chevy's sounded so soft.
Wow is that thing short it would be great with a long flatbed
What kind of whistle is that you have on this truck?
Hancock 4700
Wish you would get a cheap fuzzy fabric sock to put over your microphone..that way, there won't be any roaring sounds from wind interacting with the holes in the mike!
These old trucks were ergonomic nightmares :-)
Nice Screaming jimmy
Could you imagine how miserable that truck must have been to travel in back in the day compare two trucks of today? I mean imagine having to drive that thing through the desert like San Bernardino in the middle of summer. beautiful truck though
How advanced is that timing?? 2 teeth? WAY more rattle than a stock 6-71 or even a 6-71N. Yes, DO know my Detroits.
beautiful capture, the truck is inmaculate,no smoke when accelerates the engine. Only a thinng,The engine cab cover may be in optimal conditions in the seals (neoprene or others) But the accesibility to the engine is good. Three access;front cab and rear.
beautiful truck
