1959 GMC DETROIT DIESEL SHIFTING

- 1959 GMC CANNONBALL. DETROIT 6 CYLINDER INLINE 2 CYCLE DIESEL ENGINE. THE TRANSMISSION IS A 10 SPEED ROADRANGER. TOP SPEED OF THE TRUCK IS 65 MPH. I TRIED TO DO A MIX OF LOW RANGE TO HIGH RANGE AND BACK TO LOW , SOME DOUBLE CLUTCH , SOME NO CLUTCH , JAKE SHIFTING . UPSHIFT AND DOWN SHIFT. SOME HIGHWAY DRIVING AT 50 MPH AND AT THE END CLIMBING A GRAVEL DRIVE ON A 15 % GRADE. THE TRUCK HAS 9000 MILES ON A FRAME OFF RESTORATION. IT IS NOT COMMERCIAL AND DOES NOT SMOKE OR LEAK. IT JUST GOES TO SHOWS , PARADES AND EDUCATIONAL EXHIBITS IN ITS WELL DESERVED RETIREMENT. THANKS FOR LOOKING ! THE JAKE HAS A TOGGLE SWITCH TO TURN ON AND OFF , ALSO DEPRESSING THE CLUTCH OR STEPPING ON THE THROTTLE WILL TEMPORARILY NULLIFY IT. I FLIP THE SWITCH AT ABOUT 43 SECONDS INTO THE VIDEO. TAKE CARE.
Here is a video of the antique trucks used to move the tractors ; • 1963 Peterbilt - Siemb... Авто/Мото
It never gets old watched this at least 20 times. The timing of his shifts with the rpms and his coordination is awesome.
I love it, especially the park brake... that's a classic. I had to take a 2 stroke DD in a cab-over for a 5 hr trip one day that ended up being 9 hrs. It was hot and no aircond so had the windows open and the old DD singing along about 70 mph. That was like running a 4 hr nascar race, my ears where pretty much shot by the time I got home, lol.
My 69 I H had the same park brake

That's real truck driving. It's amazing how these transmissions just fall into gear without clutching once you speed match the engine speed to the transmission. Nice work!
Nearly any Manual transmission can be shifted like that. Done it in pretty much every manual car I’ve driven/owned. It’s pretty smooth once you get the hang of it and your clutch will last longer. And it’s kind of fun lol.
These trucks deserves to be recognized it defines what trucking industry is
You mean what it was.
My father drove those girls. The old 2 stroke Jimmy had the most beautiful sound of any diesel ever.
Awesome Bud Have a Great Day
Nothing beats that ole Detroit jake can hear them for miles
I love to see old trucks restored and running the sound of old trucks running is music to my ears
I love that sound!!! The sound of a REAL diesel engine!!! One that you can hear coming a mile away and you know will last a long time.
A mile? Hell that's way to quiet then son. I better hear that thing from 3 miles. LOL!!
And took a mile to stop.
I love the sound of those 2 stroke Detroit Diesel engines.I can remember back when my brothers and me would listen to the sounds of those engines at night and say we were going to drive trucks like them. But I'm the only one of us to actually drive trucks. But I never got a chance to drive any of the Detroit 2 strokes.By the time I did decide to start driving trucks, there was many of Detroit 2 strokes engines around.I sure miss that wonderful sound of them. Thanks for the great videos and keep up the work you're doing.May God bless you.
Oh ya four stroke diesels are garbage compared to two strokes
Unlike your hearing after a day in the cab.
Damn I couldn't help but grin when that Jake brake came on at :51, gotta love that sound!
It still does that for me too ! Thanks for looking !
This is my ASMR right here! I could watch this for hours. Driver is a real professional trucker, respect!
Thank you !
My dad drove for Mobil Oil for 36 years. I remember him having these trucks in their terminal in Norwalk Ct. Then they got new style GM's in around 62 I love the way these trucks look.
Sounds like an old bus, nice truck.
How can you not fall in luv with that exhaust note
Great truck and great engine. I took my class A driving test in a 54 GMC 930 with a 6 71 and 15 forward speeds in 1958. Love the engine and truck.
Many years ago while in college I drove a 1070A Lodestar with the same combination. That Fuller was the slickest shifting transmission I every operated. Exhaust pipe separated from the muffler on the way back from the stone quarry one day and I had to drive it all the way home loaded. That was without a doubt the loudest engine I have ever heard. My ears rang for days.
Thanks for sharing the memory !
I could listen to that engine all day!
Nice! The Old Timers had it rough, no AC, Coffin sleepers, wooden seats, damn, i have respect!!
Wooden seats? Never seen those.
I knew an old driver several years older than me, I drove over the road for 34 years, he used to sit on a nail keg with a cushion on it.! I drove a couple of those 2 stroke Jimmy's. You could change a dozen gears just getting out of the yard.!
Awesome video! Thanks for the glimpse back in time at this wonderful machine! I really miss "driver's vehicles" and while I'd rather be driving a 1959 corvette, even when it's a truck you still get to be engaged with the vehicle and the road!
No chance of someone texting and driving in this thing!
First truck I ever drove was a 1982 Mack Twin-stick. It was noisy, awful, slow, rode like a wagon but I still loved to drive it.
miss this sound i am 27 and back when i was in grade school my dad would take me with him to work on these old girls.. fun times
Music to my ears
It may be music to your ears as long as you don't have to listen to that noise for a few years. You will have lost a good parentage of your hearing.
awesome, awesome video ! Not only a demonstration of REAL driving, but the beautiful symphony of sound from that engine actually made me a little emotional
+arupian666 I appreciate that !
double clutching like an absolute boss
NICK SMITH Thank you for the nice comment !
@@rileydog362 Seconded Hoirst's comment.. ure are double clutching like an old pro..:)
@@SteveCarras Thank you !
I liked it better when He Chose NOT TO.
@@len-zeplin480 the first shift at low speed can be a tougher one. especially when the trans is still cold. thats why he only did it on the first shift.
Real sharp shiftin and fancy footwork....gotta love it!
Just music to my ears! Love the Jake kicking in and scaring cats at dogs 3 miles away!
The best sounding Detroit on RUclips!!!!
This video put a smile on my face! Thanks for the upload.
This guys a REAL trucker right here. :)
Of all the truck videos on you tube this '59 Jimmy is still my absolute favorite.
Music to my ears. I could only dream of shifting like this guy.
Parece um ronco do ônibus mercedes OF-1620.
Nothing like the sound of a screaming Detroit! Gives me tingles!
Love the short throw shifter 😆
Well damn, that'd make any red-blooded American proud, nice ride my man!
Thank you !
I love the sounds of a Detroit Diesel, especially in a big tractor wide open.
Nice truck! Thanks for restoring a piece of American Iron and sharing it with us!
Sounds great. I'm in love with those kinds of shifters, with long handles.
Nice shifting great jakebreaking this guy is the best
I guess there are lots of folks out there who like to rebuild these trucks, and drive them around. Sounds like fun.
Go to the American Truck historical society website and check it out. There are lots of resored big rigs around. aths.org
You have added absolute joy to this old driver mile or does that bring back memories with my dad my grandpa
I am glad you like it.
I love the sound of a diesel purring
That double clutching sir, you are a beast
Boy oh boy does that bring back memories. I started driving in a 1965 cabover International, with 6/71 and a 10 speed. I'll never forget that sound. Thanks
Love the sound of the older Detroit motor roaring
the 6-71 is one of my favorite diesels of all time.
This video is one of my favorite of all time. The Detroit engine is the best souding engine ever. (I personnaly have many engines like the Toyota 2JZ converted to single turbo, 4BT, etc). The sound at 3:20 is just insane. I hope to find one of these in my life. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you so much !
No I had a 1982 GMC Astro 95 With A 425 Caterpillar!!! ASS Kicking Truck!!!
Beautiful sound and awesome shifting, thanks for sharing!
Love this truck. Cannot get enough of the sound.
Beautiful sound and lovely truck. Thanks for showing it.
nothing but the upmost respect!! thanks for the video upload
You gotta' love old trucks !! Blower fan right there in the cab with you, exposed duct work, it's all cool! And that screamin' Detroit, awesome!
I love the sound of his Jake Brakes. Sounds like a real beast! :)
Nothing like the sound of a Detroit can always tell hear them from a far
I remember when my grandfather used to drive one of this nice trucks. 👍 vid
Especially on the way down she sounds like a Mopar V8, great stuff! And you just gotta love how straight 6s (and V12s for that matter) respond to bumps!
My dad loved the sound DD made he loved working on them and driving them to been around them all my life never gets old that sound awesome 👍 ☺️
I have nothing new to add but this boy knows how to finesse a transmission, and like was stated further down, I think God created the 2 Stroke DD!!
Love it, my dad has a 59' Kenworth needle nose with twin sticks just a beauty! Thanks for the upload.
Proper operation of this cool classic
KILLER on the back riding like that for 1000's of miles!!
True. I replaced both seats with new air ride. Much better. now.
That would be a long hard ride. It sure would keep you awake.
Floating and double clutching ranging through the gears..........I love it!
+heffo and juff Thank you !
Gotta love the sound of that engine!
Here is a new one with quicker shifting ruclips.net/video/MgJCprHYd2w/видео.html
so satisfying to listen to. My WRX doesnt really have that same feel because I row through the gears very quickly now, if I drive it slow I love to rev out the engine slowly.
I love the over-run sound
Back when men were men and trucks would make you one if you weren't...lol...a 1500 mile trip in that beast you were a man at the end!!
fastdraw30 no ac no power steering no air seat lol
lived a couple of blocks from Hunt's cannery when it was located in Hayward Calif. i grew up listening to screamin jimmy's. next to a top fuel dragster or funny car, nothing comes close!
Love the iconic bubbly sound from Detroit Diesel
To call it “work” in this beautifully sounding piece of machinery would be a lie... I’d drive it as much as possible... reminds me of my 1979 528i straight headers five speed... it would scream and love to hold the revs just like this.. in heaven it will be my chariot
Hugo SonofGod What do you mean? This truck screams like a BMW 520 series from 70's? Wow then your BMW looks badass
Nice truck and a good vid definitely some fancy footwork going on. Watching you drive made me realize why it wasn't smart to mess with a trucker in the 50's and 60's , after a long day of the truck kicking there ass probably couldn't wait till someone looked at them wrong so they could do some ass kicking of there own.
2 stroke Detroits have always been and always will be my first choice for a truck engine.
Excellent video and some very slick driving. That is one very nice old truck
Nothing and I mean nothing sounds as sweet as a Detroit Diesel screaming down the road. I was a volunteer firefighter for seven years when I was younger and one of the pumpers was an early 70's Sutphen with a 6V72. Man, that was a sweet sounding truck.
Darn that Detroit sounds good !! Fun video to watch, thanks for sharing :)
What a lovely sound.
Love that sound!!! Also like the 2 speed Axel,,especially when the speedometer needle jumps, ,awesome video
Beautiful, keep on Truckin 👍
Nice shifting and I like sound
I could fall asleep to that beautiful sound.
Badass!!!! That is a masterfull execution of going through the gears!!! Love the double clutch action!!!!
+Erik Trent I appreciate your comment !
worked in a chemical plant that had a 6-71 fire water pump in a block building that ran away....shut fuel off out side.... starting running on crankcase oil....til it came apart.... that noise would make you think the world was ending
Thank you for the cool story . They have been known to do that !
Music to my ears!
BEAUTIFUL, ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!
Thanks for the memories.
Love that sound!!
Fine rig! What a sound! Yeah! 😳 They have the looks, the sound and the attitude of a fine truck! 🥰
Awesome shifting skills.
Thank you !
That really is a nice sounding Detroit, most of them seem to scream very loud , this is lovely.
a great video thanks, sounds fantastic, and very well driven
wonderful sound of a 2 - stroke diesel.
Great sound!!!
I used to double clutch our old Brigadier around so much that I'd get in my Ford Escort double clutch it. My wife thought I'd lost my mind.
Thanks for the ride Sr.
Absolutely love the sound of the jake!!
Thanks for watching !
Just badass Detroit ,some memorys on the 90s
Thanks for the ride. Enjoyed the sound of that Detroit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Esse ronco do GMC Detroit è demais, è musica pros meus ouvidos.
