Perfect example of how internet know it alls made the 7.25 radius obsouelte. I've always preferred 7.25 on fender guitars. Bending is not a problem with said radius.
He talks about the radius like these guitars should just be bought to hang on the wall. I already have a 59 and just ordered a 65 and I can bend a whole step + easily! I love the 7.25" radius. So don't let that keep you from buying this great guitar! They kick ass.
The more I watch these videos, the more I appreciate how well-informed The Captain is about the gear they are featuring. He is one knowledgeable bastard!
The 7.25 radius is probably the most comfortable neck I've played, I find it hard to go back to flatter necks like on my les paul. Funny how some people prefer the exact opposite of what I like.
So, in summary, vintage guitars aren't for shredders. No shit. Having said that though, go check out Thomas Blug on his 7.25" Strat. Doesn't seem too have too many issues.
Poor Ritchie Blackmore ... he didn't scallop until 1973:) Erm ... he sort of invented schredding and on a vintage strat (1968) did he not? He also used a 335. All of my Fenders are 7,25" necks so I don't know what all the fuss is about?
In case anyone else was wondering these guitars do come with the vintage wiring as well as the current 3-way on tele and 5-way on strat switching. If you guys are like me that is important.
May have been mentioned already (too many comments to look through), but I believe in the early 50s the wiring was Bridge pup-Neck pup-Neck pup with capacitor. Since the wiring was so simple there was some experimentation going on and since the players were re-wiring the strats to get both pick-ups in the early 60s Fender changed the wiring to accommodate the players.
Played one of the '56 strats today and I've found my new dream guitar. Absolutely amazing. Call me crazy, but I adore the big fat v-neck with a 7.25" fretboard radius and small frets.
If you like the feel of a 7.25" then a 9.5" is a good compromise. On the other hand, a 7.25" can be set up to play well (e.g. whole tone bends) if you don't need the action to be extra-low.
The significance about a 1965 model Strat is that the year that Leo sold out to CBS & from 1966 onwards the headstock design changed to the larger head. The "L" series was the first under CBS & there's a collectors idiom about Pre-L series Strats.
You mention the radius on the vintage guitars and how they weren't thinking of bends..It is actually the other way around. Because they could NOT get guitars with shallow radii, it influenced the way they played as a result. It is interesting to listen to music from that time and realize that much of it was ended up sounding that way due to the guitar configuration.
You're right, but it seems like they keep it fairly consistent. Capt seems to use a Blues Jr. or a HRD 90+% of the time. Really pretty much the same amp, just a difference in wattage. Chappers changes it up more, but he usually gives you a good spectrum of tones.
great! been waiting for this vid for ages. glad you did one, but this line came out a while ago, could have done it sooner. but dont mind my complaining, just glad its here.
Are the amps you use equipped with Cel. Vintage 30`s?:) My colleage and i demonstrated the Hot Rod Deluxe(i think it was) and Vibrolux(?) combo versions, then we hooked them to an Orange 2x12 Cel.Vintage 30 cab, sounded just massively great, the soundimage, the way it tears up at higher volume, just incredible, isn`t it:)
The neck is thick on the 52 for strength. Leo didn't want you use a truss rod so he made the necks super thick because he thought it was a super strong neck wouldn't warp. The problem was the necks still distorted over time with weather and such so he was forced to add a truss rod. Over time necks got thinner to the point they are now
Hey Stick, I have a question for you, at least I think it's in regard to you. The sound levels of the amps versus the speech seems to be different to my ears, is that correct? If I want to listen to what Rob and Lee say and keep it on that sound level when they play it's blasting my ears away, or so it seems? Nevertheless love the work going into these videos!
You need to make your action higher for the 7 1/4 radius if you want to bend higher. Still won't be like a 16 radius. The best, IMO, are compound radii. Like a 10-16 from Warmoth or a 9 1/2-14 from Fender Deluxe.
First of all, i dig your vids. But can you tell me the name of the red les paul on the left, next to the captain, look freaking stunning. Greetings from germany.
Speaking of tele's and bridges and saddles I would suggest redoing the vote on the Evertune bridge on the ML-7. I voted "no" and now i regret it tremendously. I learned some stuff about the Evertune and given the fact that you would only produce a limited run of those I guess it would be a good idea. Thanks.
Is it a poly or nitro finish all the way through? Decals on top of the finish? Cloth wiring? Wax paper caps? I'd like to see what it looks like on the inside.
I really dig the Vintage Hot Rod series they offer. I just adore the '52 Hot rod Tele, ITs ostensibly an AVRI but with a Mini humbucker in the neck, compensated saddles, and a compound radius with jumbo fretters.
Since fender has made the Richie Kotzen tele available worldwide and is no longer limited to Japan, I'd really like to see a review by you guys. Chappers seems the type of player that can have some fun with a hipshot D-tuner.
Perfect kind of reviews. You got the "geek" guy who knows everything about the gear, and you got the guitar god guy who knows how to play it. Little less distorted sound would be better - but it's just me. And I really like the Captain's playing nowdays. The blues-classic rock kind of vibe. So I get what I need.:) And it's good to see that they are having fun and like to play.
The tele isn't correct, it should sound like mud when you flip the neck pickup on (aka bass rolled down to 0 on the tone control) they were wired that way in 58".
The tele made me realize something.... how about a sound like Keith Richards for under 1,000? That would be awesome! Bread and butter setup but very easy to recognize. Great job as usual guys!
What camera is used here? I think its a Panasonic HDC-TM700 but can somebody confirm that for me? I've seen bits of video in the past where a Panasonic camcorder is being held, but I'm not positive on the model. Thanks!
I went from a Jackson with a 16" radius to a Strat with a 7 1/4" radius and it is screwing me up big time. The Jackson is almost flat, so the note would never fret out no matter how far you bent the string. The Strat can't go more than a one step higher before fretting out. But, like he said, chords are much, much easier to play on the Strat. Just have to figure out what type of music your needing to play
you guys should review the gibson sg dibalo (tremolo and premium) and the les paul axcess models nobody else on youtube has a good video review of them
Don't get why people go on about a 7.25 radius being difficuilt to bend strings on, Hendrix, Gilmour, Clapton, Roy Buchanan, Knopfler, the list goes on, all used vintage 7.25 radius, John Mayer's strat, never heard them complain
this is sad that they only demoed tele tones. how about strats? i know teles are famous and in demand nowadayst because of present music like pop, r&b, hip hop etc. Justice for strat
I got my first strat back in '74 and it had a 7¼" radii and I had no problem doing two full tone bends up the dusty end, and can still do it today. It all comes down to proper technique learnt. So I have trouble understanding chapman's inability to do one. Maybe he should concentrate less on trying to impress with this silly shredding, and more on learning to play properly. But, then again, I wouldn't hold my breathe...
i actually like bending on smaller frets on a a 7.25. i press hard since i used to play acoustic like i play electric. had to press pretty hard to fret a bend on a j-45
I, personally, think that both of you should use maybe a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, so you can hear the clean tones of both guitars. And for distortion/overdrive, use a good pedal, like a Boss BD-2 or a Fulltone OCD. That's my personal opinion. (Sorry for bad English, I'm from Sweden) P.S. Ola rocks.
i have a 1959 reissue, its setup with fairly low action,, and have no problem with 2 tone bends.
I have the same guitar with the same set up I bend like hendrix and there no prob
exactly. i love the radius on vintage guitars
Anybody who thinks you cant do monster bends on a 7.25 radius, I have two words to say about that: Jimi Hendrix.
Perfect example of how internet know it alls made the 7.25 radius obsouelte. I've always preferred 7.25 on fender guitars. Bending is not a problem with said radius.
Fuckin' A Bubba!
If the guitar is set up right and it has good fretwork, there will be no problems..
He talks about the radius like these guitars should just be bought to hang on the wall. I already have a 59 and just ordered a 65 and I can bend a whole step + easily! I love the 7.25" radius. So don't let that keep you from buying this great guitar! They kick ass.
BluesDude Your right! Besides how did Jimi Hendrix do it?
thebobhollyband *you're
Love the classic car analogy. How true! Old isn't always better.
Loving the captain's bluesy licks!
I have the 52 reissue with the 7.25 radius. Plays and sounds amazing. love it!
So, in summary, vintage guitars aren't for shredders.
No shit.
Having said that though, go check out Thomas Blug on his 7.25" Strat. Doesn't seem too have too many issues.

David Gilmour has no problem bending on a 7.25 radius...
+Kevin DeCloedt He has to set the action higher to be able to do it though.
or jimi
+Oskar69 Jimi used very light strings
hey what ever u have to do.
+Oskar69 True. You can make it work. A flatter radius does allow for a lower action and easier bending without choking out.
Chappers you're on a roll! Awesome NAMM footage, a music video, and FENDER STRATS!
wait what? they did have specific years. they had 57's and 62's in the american vintage reissue catalog...
By number, yes, but the guitars themselves were the amalgamation.
In case anyone else was wondering these guitars do come with the vintage wiring as well as the current 3-way on tele and 5-way on strat switching. If you guys are like me that is important.
Great explanation of the fretboard radius issue and also about the pros & cons of historically correct reissue guitars.

Capt. When will the new Slash 5 watt combo be in stores? Did they say they were making a Head version too?
If you like the feel of a 7.25" then a 9.5" is a good compromise. On the other hand, a 7.25" can be set up to play well (e.g. whole tone bends) if you don't need the action to be extra-low.
They look absolutely stunning. Drooool.

Nice jam at the end - made a great start to my day!
Are the dreads attached to the headscarf? :-) or your bounce chappers. Another ace vid as always.
You mention the radius on the vintage guitars and how they weren't thinking of bends..It is actually the other way around. Because they could NOT get guitars with shallow radii, it influenced the way they played as a result.

Man, nothing makes a screen protector look as good as finger ease. Great video and good info on neck thickness.
I need a tele at some point, and that chunky one does appeal to me in a very profound way!
they did on a video a few days ago, they did it with the sgj.
great! been waiting for this vid for ages. glad you did one, but this line came out a while ago, could have done it sooner. but dont mind my complaining, just glad its here.
I started to do this with the support of Andertons over on my Channel, if you'd like me to do more let the Captain know!
Stick
What did Captain play @ 14:00 ??!?!?!
Are the amps you use equipped with Cel. Vintage 30`s?:) My colleage and i demonstrated the Hot Rod Deluxe(i think it was) and Vibrolux(?)
combo versions, then we hooked them to an Orange 2x12 Cel.Vintage 30 cab, sounded just massively great, the soundimage, the way it tears up at higher volume, just incredible, isn`t it:)
I'm a huge Les Paul w/P90's fan, but those 62/64 teles sound immense.

Nevertheless love the work going into these videos!
He addresses that in the video, about the pot resistor on the neck pup.
lee - you should make some blues lesson videos man you have such a great tone and always hit the right notes
You need to make your action higher for the 7 1/4 radius if you want to bend higher. Still won't be like a 16 radius. The best, IMO, are compound radii. Like a 10-16 from Warmoth or a 9 1/2-14 from Fender Deluxe.
I'd like a video with three Teles and a Strat please, and I want to hear every single Tele play lead work, but not the Strat for some reason. Thanks.
It's an LPJ, they have a demo of it up.
First of all, i dig your vids.
But can you tell me the name of the red les paul on the left, next to the captain, look freaking stunning.
Greetings from germany.

I learned some stuff about the Evertune and given the fact that you would only produce a limited run of those I guess it would be a good idea. Thanks.
I noticed the Stereo isn't the wrong way round anymore - thanks @maplewoodstudio :P
Is it a poly or nitro finish all the way through? Decals on top of the finish? Cloth wiring? Wax paper caps? I'd like to see what it looks like on the inside.
Not to intrude, but are any reviews of the new Gibson Min-Etune tuning system-equipped guitars forthcoming?
Absolutely amazing playing. All the video's are great.
I really dig the Vintage Hot Rod series they offer. I just adore the '52 Hot rod Tele, ITs ostensibly an AVRI but with a Mini humbucker in the neck, compensated saddles, and a compound radius with jumbo fretters.
You and the captain should do a review on some Rickenbackers I don't think I've seen you shred one of those yet!
I would lime to see a comparaison video of the 2013 les paul traditionnal with non-weight relived body vs the 2012 model with weight releif.
Since fender has made the Richie Kotzen tele available worldwide and is no longer limited to Japan, I'd really like to see a review by you guys. Chappers seems the type of player that can have some fun with a hipshot D-tuner.
That Tele Rob has is gorgeous.
I have several 7 1/4 neck fenders that have low action and don't fret out. You just need to know hot to set them up.
I like videos and reviews of non shredding things too, thanks guys!
Cap, Steel saddles: brighter Brass: fuller, preferred among most of us tele guys ;)
Would love it if you guys could get Matt Bellamy's Mansons and give a bit of a review! Would blow my mind that!
The tele isn't correct, it should sound like mud when you flip the neck pickup on (aka bass rolled down to 0 on the tone control) they were wired that way in 58".
There is something deeply spiritual about a good tele!...
Thanks!
you guys should review the fender japan fsr models 54 58 and 72 strats and the 52 tele very limited pieces very cool indeed
No, the 52 and 62 Tele pickups were not the same, totally different.
Can you guys do a lesson for beginners blue jamming?
I bought a mex strat from these guys near christmas, its sooo much better than my old crappy £100 quid clanger, its lovely to play =)
when is that chappers 7 string coming?
Loving your Chris Redfield T-shirt Chappers!
I agree and actually we discussed this recently ;-)
you guys should review the gibson sg dibalo (tremolo and premium) and the les paul axcess models nobody else on youtube has a good video review of them
Always love sounds of bridge pickups :)
I also would ask for more clean sounds 'cause it's better to hear the differences between the guitars!
it's just way too much fun to always use the same amps if you have access to so many, right? :D
Was that a little Black Hand at 7:20 ???
I was so close to getting the lefty 65 but the radius turns me off I like to bend I want a thicker neck though
You should do a bass channel with those fender american vintage
Hot Rod Deluxe to get "vintage Fender tones"? Uh, why not a DRRI, or Tremolux?
Yeah there has been a 57, 62 and 7x strat?
My AVRI '64 Tele is probably the most comfortable guitar I've played. If it came down to it, I'd part with my gorgeous PRS Custom 22 before the tele.
And I believe you should do reviews on acoustic instruments.
Don't get why people go on about a 7.25 radius being difficuilt to bend strings on, Hendrix, Gilmour, Clapton, Roy Buchanan, Knopfler, the list goes on, all used vintage 7.25 radius, John Mayer's strat, never heard them complain
Can anyone tell me what song Chappers plays at 17:38.
It sounds really familiar (I'm pretty sure I've heard it on Gran Turismo 4)
Did I miss it, or was the strat not even played through the amp?
this is sad that they only demoed tele tones. how about strats? i know teles are famous and in demand nowadayst because of present music like pop, r&b, hip hop etc. Justice for strat
Nice review and killer jam at the end boys!
What about the finish... Is there nitro on them?
Was loving this video till the close up of robs second guitar where the price tag flipped me off haha!! Nice guitars
I got my first strat back in '74 and it had a 7¼" radii and I had no problem doing two full tone bends up the dusty end, and can still do it today. It all comes down to proper technique learnt. i actually like bending on smaller frets on a a 7.25. i press hard since i used to play acoustic like i play electric. had to press pretty hard to fret a bend on a j-45
AND NO, YOU ALL NEED A 72 TELE fender wide range buckers ftw!
I meant it just in general really. Might be me though, I don't use particularly high end headphones and all.
the only reason i keep watching Andertons is because of the jamming session!!
how do you intonate a telecaster that has one saddle per every two strings?
You guys are wrong it's 2017
You’re wrong too :)
lololol
@@VintageRadius you guys are all wrong. its 2020
dtyndall11 your wrong, it’s the end game
Nah it’s 2021
There's no poly undercoat on the new AV-series?
I, personally, think that both of you should use maybe a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, so you can hear the clean tones of both guitars. And for distortion/overdrive, use a good pedal, like a Boss BD-2 or a Fulltone OCD. That's my personal opinion. (Sorry for bad English, I'm from Sweden)
P.S. Ola rocks.
But is it better than a Squire Vintage Vibe Tele? :D
Great vid as ever guys. For all round usefulness and playability would you choose an American Standard or an American Vintage 65 Stratocaster? Thanks.
Very bummed they got rid of the bass circuit on the teles. I thought these models were supposed to be more accurate?
It comes with a wiring diagram to change it.
hell yeah.. jam intro was great ! more fust stuff
whoa Rob, usually you shred in a more contemporary way but those opening licks were rockabilly on roids, nice
