Guys, this is awesome. Thank you so much for the suggestions. Already excited to sit down with a coffee and listen to as many of these as is humanly possible
I’m in an “indie/rock” band and I think our single Plan B by Billobuckers could be something new or interesting to listen to. ruclips.net/video/6ws98TAdQig/видео.htmlsi=GwrNMOpp4k8iBd_J🤘🏻🎶
Hey Rob my name is Austin Mo and I am an original rock artist. I think you would really dig my latest single Back In The Kingdom, you can check it out here ruclips.net/video/iU63MdQGkLU/видео.htmlsi=-xLn1d1ImmJ8eqDv
Rob this is a golden opportunity to combine guitar and DnD dice. Roll the 12 sided die to figure out what to tune each string. Roll to see what scale to play in. Roll for the time signature. Roll the 20 sided dice to pick the amp. Then the pedals. Roll the 12 sided die to determine the knob placement. Etc... this could be a series to take us places we have never have gone before.
Clutch is a good band to listen to if you like stoner things. Can't really go wrong with any of their albums, but the highlights are Blast Tyrant, Robot Hive/Exodus, Psychic Warfare, and Sunrise on Slaughter Beach. Their stuff from the 90s is pretty cool but it's very raw and a way different vibe. I don't have anything of my own to send yet, I'm currently working on my first original tune. I'll be sure to DM you about it when it's done!
My inspiration was always Dokkens 'Back for the Attack' but more lately Arjen Lucassens Star One metal album for mega epic sounding riffs, like in 'High Moon' .
A band that I've recently fallen in love with is Messa. They describe themselves as Scarlet Doom. There's prog, black metal, punk, dark ambient, jazz, blues and doom all over their stuff. It's gotten me super inspired as of late, hope it invokes the same from you my good sir
I hear ya. As much as I like my music I got sick of listening to the same songs over and over again. I needed something new. I would recommend listening to some streaming services’ “discovery” mixes to expose yourself to new music from people you may have never heard before. It’s been good for me, although my music experience was rather limited to begin with.
Rob, since you've been to Chennai, India, I would suggest a well-known musician from Chennai Mr. Ilaiyaraaja. I suggest you listen to two of his albums 'How to name it?' and 'Nothing but wind', which are fusion with Indian (Carnatic) and western Classical music. Have a listen and hope it will trigger something inside you! Cheers man!
Nick Earle and the Wild Hearts. They're a local band to me, and they're on spotify. They honestly have amazing music, and I think they'd be right up your alley Rob.
Hey Rob I got just what you need! I highly recommend you listen to "Terran theme 1 Remastered". From the game StarCraft. I remember way back in an Andertons video that you mentioned how you were a big Diablo fan. And I don't know how much of a Blizzard fan you are, but if you haven't played StarCraft firstly, you should absolutely do that. And secondly, the human race soundtrack has some real bangers. It has this kind of Western, electronic rock feel. But then the dynamic changes, and suddenly you are in an out of this dark gritty grunge environment. Best of luck with the new album!
For some grunge/stoner/alternative artists I like that haven't already been mentioned (love Clutch, Gnome & Band Maid :D ), I'd add Kadavar (Hard Times album is great), Whalerider, Pete International Airport (a Dandy Warhols spinoff project) and Gila Monster by King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard. Also, Simone Simons' collab with Alyssa White-Gluz of Archenemy "Cradle to the Grave" is my favourite new song this year
i learnt everyday almost for 5 years, recently i take breaks the i have ides thick and fast, too many and they all seem good, i like breaks now as i come back with different ideas..but am still pretty warmed up.. just not stuck in familiar patterns, another thing i do is just make something really simple, make it good get it down then cut loose for a new idea
Hello Rob, I was in the same situation and I searched for different music that gave me other ideas. I listened to Tool, Matthias IA Eglundh, Ola Englund, Pete Cotterell, Ghozer, Godsleep, IanVase, Arch Enemy, Jinjer..... Make something different, go fishing or skydiving, do something exciting...and some wonderful things...driving motorcycles...🙃
As a cellist and guitarist that still practices around some of dorje's riffs (like white dove) I've got some suggestions from "things I like on guitar that I would play on cello", which opens up the world of music written around the confines of instruments tuned in 5ths or fretless or and some folk music. 1) HALO theme. There are guitar adaptions as well such as the Mjolnir's mix. And one of the better mix's is Halo 3's final level. 2) Goat Rodeo - yo-yo ma, edgar meyer, stuart Duncan, Chris Thile. "Less is moi" is one of my favorites. 3) from above, Edgar meyer has done other bass collabs such so just look into all the crazy stuff there. 4) Bela fleck & the flecktones, found through following a lot of Victor Wooten. 5) Apocalyptica metal with cello's, simple as that.
Sorry dude, my play lists consist of stuff like Shelby Lynn, Ronnie Milsap, Gary Morris, Jeff Healey, Boston, Mountain, Mozart, Bach, & Vivaldi. Toss in a little Yoyo Ma. Varied but they move me. I just found a couple Pearl Jam tunes I like a year ago. A little behind the times. Hope you glean some inspiration from someone out here in digital land! 😊😊😊
I recently discovered one of the best albums I've heard in a while - A Boat on the Sea by Moron Police. It's not a long album and could be digested easily in one sitting. In fact, I've heard prog songs that by themselves are longer than this entire album! Also don't sleep on the latest Devin Townsend (PowerNerd) or Opeth (Last Will and Testament).
Listen/Read 'I Have No Mouth But I Must Scream' by Harlan Ellison and then go and lay down in a dark room for a few hours. Very short story (less than 40 mins) and immensely impactful.
Might not be your kinda thing but I'm into a lot of power metal/fantasy metal at the moment. The Zeramin Game album by Memories Of Old is still one of my favourite albums - I regularly listen to that from start to finish. Also Battle Beast (Noora Louhimo is a freaking incredible singer), Beast In Black, Gloryhammer... all really good fun power metal that I feel really inspires me and makes me happy!
Hels Pattison. Her music doesn't at all fit the heavy/stoner vibes but I know you're a fan of slide playing and country music so I thought you might enjoy!
Boskat (nope, not boss cat!), a Flemish 2 man band. You 'll be surprised. (translates as forest cat btw, and grrrreatings from Ghent- Flanders, I have been a fan since the earliest internetyears)
i flip the guitar to get other ideas too, so i play left handed and right handed and on my lap or even upright, it came from injuries.. i use right handed guitars for both ways..
Even though i started in 1990 "TRYING" to play guitar and trying to songwrite and i got abou over 5000 partial songs/song ideas, song titles/album titles. etc. I currently take care of my 77 year old wheelchair bound elderly brother, on top of that my main computer is shot, and we have no working vehicle, i simply do not have the gear or area to even practice. My amp got a fender ultimate chorus got fried in the house fire in 2002 which every time i try to use it it shocks me. my skills suck could not get past barre chords and shifting from chord to chord. basically i would say i would be at the beginner edge of where you go from beginner to intermediate. So i write lyrics only and i allow lyrics come to me i do not try to force them. Also i am left handed which makes things even more costly and difficult, on top of i am a conservative MAGA warrior Trump supporter which if the other things did not drive people away that would. Also i am a longer, i am totally uncomfortable talking to people even if it is family members, i do not like to socialize, it makes me uncomfortable ive been bullied all my life even by those who were supposed to be my friends and used me as a free roadie and a joke they hazed me worse than Jason Newsted got when he first joined metallica. so i do not trust anybody any more. and now with main computer gone down and don't know if or when the crappy old laptop i am using will fail meaning i will no longer be online for a long time. and i pay the bills and buy groceries online using the computer. currently i fulltime take care of my elderly brother. we have no more to pay or repair computer or get a junker used car to travel . then there is type of music i write alot of the songs are political anti left wing totally controversial in fact more controversial that body counts first album and the infamous song they were known for. I do have some country, blues and bluegrass originals. but i have none that are in a completed or even in semi completed stage. it's only me writing the songs, and my skills on guitar is not good enough to do the parts and even if i could i don't have a place or gear to record it. So i may be 90 which i am 54 right now before i get one sone completed. but there is tons of other people on hear that have stuff to keep you inspired and busy.
I love bands like Wolfheart, Norma Jean, Zao, Everdown, Everything In Slow Motion, Sevendust, DevilSriver, and Signs of Betrayal. I don’t have any original music to recommend since I write basement level junk in my bedroom. And since everyone on Craigslist seems to want loads of experience……….
Possibly not what you're looking for. But I went into a friend's studio with another friend and we recorded three of my songs. One about the death of my grandfather, one about a guy whose girlfriend is gone and he still thinks she's there, and one that is kind of like my version of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" or "Everybody Hurts". Kind of an anthem of 'When no one else will help you -- I will.' I have them all on Soundcloud. I'm in a new songwriting project with one of the other two -- my best friend. He only wants to do new material. Nothing that we did before. The three songs [from 2017] are "Family Portrait," "It Doesn't Click" and "Port in the Storm." Let me know if you're interested. If not that's okay.
Elder, Monolord, and Wo Fat are three bands that have inspired me lately. My newest project, "Cadillac with Curtains", is gearing up to record an EP in the spring.
I'm working on a surround mix for an album I put out last year, "LoFi for HiFi", and my whole thing with the album was to present my music as one style (LoFi hip-hop) that actually has its roots in unrelated genres (Jazz and Musical Theatre)---and one thing I really focused on was making sampled sounds sound real and real recordings sound sampled to get that hip-hop presentation with the human sound of a real recording and it might give you some inspiration for just being a "I hadn't thought of that, I wonder" type thing LC YEEN - LoFi for HiFi "Dabs are for the Wu-Tang" "24-bit Karat Gold Dabs" "Lonely Dabs by Your Grave/As the Skies Clear" would be the tracks I think you might be able to find something to pull some inspiration from- One thing I did that is pretty noticable on the album is the bass... which isn't a bass---I used a J Macis Jazzmaster through a sub-octave pedal with a DI into a bass cab sim and doubled it with a sub-kick maker to round out the bite from the octave pedal. Album was legit meant to be a "here's how you *could* be mixing and mastering" experiment so there are a ton of interesting things to pull inspiration out of on that end of things.
My band is pretty new. We're called Phelocipastor. We have two singles called "Here to stay" and "Grey Matter" on Spotify and two videos on youtube playing live.
If you're not familiar I would check out Botch and Dillinger Escape plan. Not at all stoner music, more like calculated chaos well produced. Jinjer is also very unique.
"Porcupine tree", specifically for me "Fear of a blank planet live" and also "Soen" are fuckin siiiccckkkk (Martys is a banger, but the whole album "Lotus" is great)
You’ve probably heard of sleep token by now. Another good British band mixing hardcore with stoner/sludge groove is malevolence. Sylosis is great for the modern Thrash stuff as well as bleed from within
Have a listen to Trevor Rabin’s stuff. His solo albums and going back to him playing in a local, South African band Rabbit. There’s a lot more to the man than his tenure at YES (which was great). I think you’ll be presently surprised. Some traditional, eclectic African styles thrown in.
Here’s one of my original tracks if you fancy watching! A track about battling with mental health. ruclips.net/video/dDN11iN6B_M/видео.htmlsi=4pPahPYMbYDGRcba
Have you heard of the scottish Band Runrig? Folk Rock. Or the german band Anduril? Another german band called Navajivah if I remember it correctly. French band Les Cosmonautes. Two bassists and a drummer. You know Alceste? French as well. A german guy doing RUclips vids going by the name Der Möbelkutscher. Lately he started doing his own music. All in german and I'm not sure if I really like his music. Early BeeGees before disco. Kraut Rock things like Can. Or Kraftwerk but they didn't do Rock.
olde one... but not as know ..known buy many,,, but his technique and sound and skill is mega... misha calvin....check him out ,,,, and art wise... obviously known for film, clive barker . but please check out his art work.. along with joe fenton and sean coss..
Some stuff I listen to that might be less well known: -Cosmosquad makes great instrumental music - my favorite song is The Ballad of Rick James m.ruclips.net/video/QPfngsa7NuY/видео.html -Celtic music can be good to listen to for guitar (Angus Young even plays a short rock version of Loch Lomond live pretty frequently). Ella Roberts is one of my favorite Celtic singers m.ruclips.net/video/-uCDw30wCe0/видео.html -For stoner-leaning music, Priestess is a really good, less well known band. They released a couple of amazing albums and then sadly haven't made music in years. A lot of their songs sound really familiar like they're much older songs, but they were from mid-2000s. m.ruclips.net/video/oAgECFjKTbo/видео.html -Like Machines is another smaller band that sadly disappeared more recently after making some really good music. Robert Plant-style vocalist but with heavier guitar riffs. m.ruclips.net/video/0s-jVy5F-lc/видео.html -Crobot is one of my favorite bands. They are larger and still active, so you may have heard of them already. I'd describe them as groovy rock generally, though they went heavier in their newest album and I'd describe it as groovy metal. My favorite song: m.ruclips.net/video/oQnU4Qn_a_U/видео.html -Two Steps From Hell made great orchestral music, though they recently split. The two composers, Nick Phoenix and Thomas Bergersen, are still making music on their own though. m.ruclips.net/video/n-Dh3ftkRAs/видео.html -Nobuo Uematsu, composer for much of the Final Fantasy music, is perhaps the greatest video game composer ever in my opinion. m.ruclips.net/video/MuKhZamlIk0/видео.html -Redlight King makes some great music that combines rock-style instrumentals with more rap-style singing m.ruclips.net/video/DUaR_VDc2mw/видео.html
No this should show you it's not what you're told, search out any kind of source to use in your music, I'm surprised more haven't asked, or they did but less honestly
Make your searching different, as in look up backing tracks look up poetry, i feel like you over thought it just like everyone else including me, so really try that it WILL HELP, i promise
Here is the playlist of our most rock oriented album. We also do a certain amount of electronic music. Hopefully there is something interesting for you. ruclips.net/video/nzn5zA5MNy0/видео.html Also I really like Japanese bands like Yousei Teikoku, Cross Vein and Hollow Mellow. All the best for your new album!
Hello Rob, here is a playlist of my most recent work entitled ''Elephants''. It was written and recorded in two days after an evening being inspired by the great movie ''The Elephant Man'' and listening to The Lone Rhino by Adrian Belew. I thought it would be a cool hybrid. Anyways, hope you enjoy: ruclips.net/p/PLhgMFSyevioEyi6misUD4bEl_hEsg2bdW
One of the bands I've got into in the last year is called Unprocessed. Imagine Polyphia but elevated to another level. Always trying new things with their music, they go hard, extremely technical. Maybe Thrashed would be a good introductory song. ruclips.net/video/_z3AMUSDDF8/видео.html&pp=ygUSdW5wcm9jZXNzZWQgdGhyYXNo
Hey Rob,wondering if your interested in a challenge?? You’re a trained musician, scales, notes cordes…all known to you..I can play but I’m untrained self thought musician with little knolage of scales and theory…interested in a challenge to shred bro!???
Guys, this is awesome. Thank you so much for the suggestions. Already excited to sit down with a coffee and listen to as many of these as is humanly possible
I’m in an “indie/rock” band and I think our single Plan B by Billobuckers could be something new or interesting to listen to.

I’m sure you have before, but listen to the very early Dead Letter Circus from my home town Brisbane.
Etc... this could be a series to take us places we have never have gone before.
perfect timing i just finish getting my record studio working and i play inprovisation all the time
Clutch is a good band to listen to if you like stoner things.
Always a pleasure sir, posted an old song I did for u
A band that I've recently fallen in love with is Messa. They describe themselves as Scarlet Doom. There's prog, black metal, punk, dark ambient, jazz, blues and doom all over their stuff. It's gotten me super inspired as of late, hope it invokes the same from you my good sir

I would recommend listening to some streaming services’ “discovery” mixes to expose yourself to new music from people you may have never heard before. It’s been good for me, although my music experience was rather limited to begin with.
any way your a master! don't force it and it will come, forget you want it for a moment and just enjoy the music!
Honestly, between Genus Ordinis Dei and Apocalypse Orchestra you will have all the inspiration you need
Stupidly good sounding amp Rob.
King Gizzard is so good
I'm in a rock band called Yeshyr, sometime next year we're releasing our 4th album. I know it's a self plug but it's worth a post.
i learnt everyday almost for 5 years, recently i take breaks the i have ides thick and fast, too many and they all seem good, i like breaks now as i come back with different ideas..but am still pretty warmed up.. just not stuck in familiar patterns, another thing i do is just make something really simple, make it good get it down then cut loose for a new idea
Hello Rob,
I was in the same situation and I searched for different music that gave me other ideas.
I highly recommend Serapis Project and Born in Exile, two prog metal bands from Spain. Joaco Luis and Carlos Castillo are PHENOMENAL guitarists.
As a cellist and guitarist that still practices around some of dorje's riffs (like white dove) I've got some suggestions from "things I like on guitar that I would play on cello", which opens up the world of music written around the confines of instruments tuned in 5ths or fretless or and some folk music.

Folk punk is the best 😅
i flip the guitar to get other ideas too, so i play left handed and right handed and on my lap or even upright, it came from injuries.. i use right handed guitars for both ways..
I'm in the same boat, Rob. I'm 50 and I have gone blank 😮
Mithras - extreme UK death metal. My favourite band of all-time.
You’ve already heard the ruckus I’m causing, but good on ya for giving people a go my friend. Hope to see ya in a month my dude.

If you need a kick up the inspiration its always worth listening to some Captain Beefheart.
My taste is all over.. Anyway always loved primus les Claypool had a side project called Mushroom men. Just really different
Elder, Monolord, and Wo Fat are three bands that have inspired me lately. My newest project, "Cadillac with Curtains", is gearing up to record an EP in the spring.
I'm working on a surround mix for an album I put out last year, "LoFi for HiFi", and my whole thing with the album was to present my music as one style (LoFi hip-hop) that actually has its roots in unrelated genres (Jazz and Musical Theatre)---and one thing I really focused on was making sampled sounds sound real and real recordings sound sampled to get that hip-hop presentation with the human sound of a real recording and it might give you some inspiration for just being a "I hadn't thought of that, I wonder" type thing
LC YEEN - LoFi for HiFi "Dabs are for the Wu-Tang" "24-bit Karat Gold Dabs" "Lonely Dabs by Your Grave/As the Skies Clear" would be the tracks I think you might be able to find something to pull some inspiration from-
One thing I did that is pretty noticable on the album is the bass... which isn't a bass---I used a J Macis Jazzmaster through a sub-octave pedal with a DI into a bass cab sim and doubled it with a sub-kick maker to round out the bite from the octave pedal. Album was legit meant to be a "here's how you *could* be mixing and mastering" experiment so there are a ton of interesting things to pull inspiration out of on that end of things.

"Porcupine tree", specifically for me "Fear of a blank planet live" and also "Soen" are fuckin siiiccckkkk (Martys is a banger, but the whole album "Lotus" is great)
Hi Rob ,do have an American vendor for your guitars . Jim
Listen to Band Maid. Lead guitarist Kanami just got her own Signature PRS.
Not a new band but the album “revolution revolucion” by Ill Nino absolutely slaps
You’ve probably heard of sleep token by now.
Another good British band mixing hardcore with stoner/sludge groove is malevolence.
Sylosis is great for the modern
Thrash stuff as well as bleed from within
Have a listen to Trevor Rabin’s stuff. His solo albums and going back to him playing in a local, South African band Rabbit. There’s a lot more to the man than his tenure at YES (which was great). I think you’ll be presently surprised. Some traditional, eclectic African styles thrown in.
One of my favourite albums of 2024 is an album by a band called Quantum called Down The Mountainside.... me thinks you may like it.
Here’s one of my original tracks if you fancy watching!
A track about battling with mental health.

I’d gladly send you some riffs bro
Hey rob! Listen to «Bury The Light» from the devil may cry video game series. Very epic and inspiring song! Cheers!
Almost finished writing an album, then I had a son. Desperate to continue on it and get it done/recorded but it’s just not possible for now.

Noah Gundersen - "Haunted House"
you should check out the album Everything Was Sound by Silent Planet
I would look at music older than what you are used to for something new to you.
Gnome and Bad Nerves. That is all.
Some stuff I listen to that might be less well known:
-Cosmosquad makes great instrumental music - my favorite song is The Ballad of Rick James m.ruclips.net/video/QPfngsa7NuY/видео.html
-Celtic music can be good to listen to for guitar (Angus Young even plays a short rock version of Loch Lomond live pretty frequently). Ella Roberts is one of my favorite Celtic singers m.ruclips.net/video/-uCDw30wCe0/видео.html
-For stoner-leaning music, Priestess is a really good, less well known band. They released a couple of amazing albums and then sadly haven't made music in years. A lot of their songs sound really familiar like they're much older songs, but they were from mid-2000s. m.ruclips.net/video/oAgECFjKTbo/видео.html
-Like Machines is another smaller band that sadly disappeared more recently after making some really good music. Robert Plant-style vocalist but with heavier guitar riffs. m.ruclips.net/video/0s-jVy5F-lc/видео.html
-Crobot is one of my favorite bands. They are larger and still active, so you may have heard of them already. I'd describe them as groovy rock generally, though they went heavier in their newest album and I'd describe it as groovy metal. My favorite song: m.ruclips.net/video/oQnU4Qn_a_U/видео.html
-Two Steps From Hell made great orchestral music, though they recently split. The two composers, Nick Phoenix and Thomas Bergersen, are still making music on their own though. m.ruclips.net/video/n-Dh3ftkRAs/видео.html
-Nobuo Uematsu, composer for much of the Final Fantasy music, is perhaps the greatest video game composer ever in my opinion. m.ruclips.net/video/MuKhZamlIk0/видео.html
-Redlight King makes some great music that combines rock-style instrumentals with more rap-style singing m.ruclips.net/video/DUaR_VDc2mw/видео.html
Why should I inspire you? You inspire me. You should inspire yourself, YOU are the lick master 🤘
No this should show you it's not what you're told, search out any kind of source to use in your music, I'm surprised more haven't asked, or they did but less honestly
@@musicmore5169 Good answer 👌
Two of my nephews' band "She is Defiant" - ruclips.net/user/results?search_query=she+is+defiant - pretty varied in terms of sound
Make your searching different, as in look up backing tracks look up poetry, i feel like you over thought it just like everyone else including me, so really try that it WILL HELP, i promise

Anyways, hope you enjoy:

Check out Scanazzi!
One of the bands I've got into in the last year is called Unprocessed. Imagine Polyphia but elevated to another level. Always trying new things with their music, they go hard, extremely technical. Maybe Thrashed would be a good introductory song.
