Defrost mode moves the airflow to direct it at the side windows, which helps de-ice them. Also while it does raise the cabin temperature higher, it’s still only 29 to 30 degrees C and that’s a long way below any potential thermal shock problems with the glass. It’s not at all comparable to pouring boiling water over the windscreen. I don’t think it’s risky to use.
windscreen would only crack more if the window already have a crack in it... you should also only use lukewarm water and not hot... hot water freezes faster than cold/lukevarm... if i had a tesla i would just set it to heat up the cabin for a good amount of time.. instead of this
If there is a tiny stone chip somewhere in the windscreen, that is enough to make it crack when using defrost - even Tesla admitted that to me. Here in Norway, you are likely to get such chips just about every day during the winter season, so 99% of the Teslas here are prone to cracking the windshield with defrost mode. In Scandinavian Tesla-groups there are lots of people reporting about this happening to them, every single day.
Defrost mode moves the air vents at either side of the dash and points the warm air at the windows. That’s what defrost mode dose. You can also schedule the heating and link your calendar to your Tesla and have your car ready for you in time to leave.
In the winter time, I live in Canada and own two Teslas. The one thing people forget is the defrost mode can be adjusted because you can lower the temperature from high to whatever you’d like it to be and defrost will continue also in your video you show your mirrors folded in. There’s an option in controls in the car menu so that you can leave the mirrors fold it out during the winter time and they wont fold in. This reduces the risk of damage to the motors if there’s ice buildup near the mirrors.
@ - I am not sure - it’s not mentioned in the manual - however what is mentioned is that one expects excessive ice build up where the side mirrors food - one can disable the auto-fold feature.

Never had to defrost car to get in. Had tesla 3 years now in finland with -30 degrees winters. I put wd40 for the handles one time in autumn and thats it, work whole winter. Plus silicone for window seals.
Possibly because the temp stays below 0 all day in very cold countries. In the UK we can have rain or high humidity during the day then freezing at night. This makes it much harder to open the car
My i3 door momentarily stuck as I opened it this morning despite me having pre warmed the cabin. Probably sensible in the future to leave it longer. Thanks. BTW I had a major problem with a Tesla M3 getting the charging cable to release - completely frozen and actually had to wait several days for temperature to climb despite pouring hot water over the charging plug. Would not release from inside the car.
That is normal seasonal maintenance up here in Finland. Silicone oil protectant is best. Use it to all door seals and top edge of window as well. And lube up the locking mechanisms so they don't freeze up.

Good video. The defrost is for snowy countries where your car would be completely covered in snow. The snow acts as a thermal while defrosting the car. We would never need this in the UK, hence why climate is just fine.
Yep, I can't see the benefits of it. Maybe it looks more sporty when your door is open and the window is all the way down? Maybe the doors are significantly cheaper to make? But then why do only expensive cars have them?
Too bad Tesla doesn't place just a small heating element along the window trim to heat it up when the car is empty and someone is starting to heat it up. NOT super hot, just hot enough to warm the rubber up a bit. I know it's 1 more part. OR, perhaps you can aim the air vents outward and upward towards the window so when you start heating, it'll be directed towards the doors. you'd have to set that up before the cold weather but that might help?
Funny that the camera is heated but the front radar thing isn't! Or is it all run off the cameras these days? I set my E-Niro to warm up to 25C. It doesn't come straight onto max temp of course and it allows that heat to filter through to all the really cold areas as well! Also, it's probably best to mention to people to pre warm their seats/steering wheel etc! Nothing worse than getting into a nice warm car but sitting on cold seat or holding a cold steering wheel!
Surprised you did not try using the 'Vent' function after, say 5 mins as this will simply drop the windows without the danger of damaging them. If they won't drop then they are obviously still too frozen and you would have to wait another minute and then try again and so on until eventually they open committing you safe access to the interior. This would short-circuit a lot of the time wasting waiting for the car to warm up.
Normal people use their common sense and first defrost their Tesla using the Defrost function on their Tesla app which can also be scheduled before you open and enter their vehicle like I used to do and never had any issues in sub-zero temperatures. So, to answer the question directly, how to open a Tesla in the winter with frozen door handles and (not or) windows, simply use the Defrost function on your Tesla app. It really is that simple. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Love Elon and Co. Love everything tesla, spacex, etc. Shareholder. All of it. And the design decision to go frameless was a very bad mistake considering they wanted to sell the car in the northern hemisphere. This was probably due to being designed and built in California. How they did testing globally and didn't figure out just how bad this in cold climate baffles me.
Yep. Yet so many comments from people that don't appreciate the advantage of having an EV that can be controlled remotely via an app. Maybe I shouldn't have stood next to the car while using the app.
Long story short, put the heater on for 30 mins. My car hant got framless eindows, but over the ladt few weeks ive been turning ore heat on as i get out of bed, time ive had a shower and got dressed thr car is clear nd 20 degrees inside, and the seat is warm. My wheel gets to hot even at level 1. (1st world issue) I moan about all the tech in cars, but in the winter it is nice to not have to scrape ice and sit in a cold damp car while it demists.
How to claim a problem where there is none really. Simply use pre-conditioning . Defrosting is not only no problem, it is useful because it defrosts also mirrors etc.
Correct. But clearly there is a problem with some Tesla owners not understanding how frameless windows as I've now seen 5 cases in the UK in the last 6 days on Facebook where owners have broken their Tesla glass.
Defrost mode doesn’t break windows. Used it in much worse situations for years. If there is a defect and manufacturing fault, you want to learn this as quick as possible, while under warranty. Absolute nonsense by saying high chance of that window breaking. You know, I live in Scandinavia and had the window stuck and noise like that many times. With far more ice, no breaking. Plz stop fear mongering. Regards, A rational Model 3 owner, in proper Nordic climate
Not a Tesla but I had a new window regulator with frost. £400. Now just run a bit of warm water round it just before opening it. Surprised they don’t have a heavy frost easy heating. A bit of software and its done. Come in Elon….. Surly you should be able to build your own settings into one mode and call it winter mode.
Tesla has already introduced a change in an over the air update where the windows drop slightly in the cold weather to help to stop them freezing on the door seals. However, mine didn't seem to be yet it was cold enough for them to be frozen. And they do have a defrost option as shown in the video. But you just have to be careful using it. I saw on Facebook this morning that someone cracked their windscreen today using the defrost mode.
Hello from Finland. Fastest and safes way to open frozen door/lock is to heat water. Not to hot, but warm to 120˚F / 50°C 1/2 gallon (2 litres) . Fill a platic pack with warm water. Bush the warm platic pack gently over the lock/handle on the door and below it. Some 10-20 seconds and you may open the frozen lock or handle of the door. It takas a little bit longer to warm up the the mechanism of the window. Do not let any water to drop away from the platic pack on the door/lock.
I can't see the point of frameless doors. Premium sporty cars have them, but they're a pain. As for the door handles, they improve efficiency, so Tesla always has flush handles and these were meant to be an improvement over the Model S which were too complicated and unreliable.
@GoGreenAutos if you look at bmw new doorhandles the aerodynamics are almost nonexistent - the area is nonexistent and the turbulence of a small hole is close to nonexistent
This is ridiculous, just pour Luke warm water over the glass and door handles?!? My 2 series coupe has similar door window design and the handles freeze. The luke warm water takes about 1 minute 🫠
I had 2 Mustangs with frameless windows. The problem with the Teslas (and some other cars) is that they have the windows tuck up under a lip. No lip = no strike surface. The rubber gasket around the window frame was enough to keep noise and rain out. 1994-2004 in Canada, and drove them year round.
It’s absolutely useless, no idea why they made it frameless? I had two Tesla’s before, now BMW IX, same useless flimsy feeling frameless doors. I now carry a window defrost spray to spray on the window seal to help window unstick itself as well as preheating!
Tesla should make new owners watch your video 💪❤️

If they won't drop then they are obviously still too frozen and you would have to wait another minute and then try again and so on until eventually they open committing you safe access to the interior.
This would short-circuit a lot of the time wasting waiting for the car to warm up.
Yes, I completely forgot about the vent option
Fantastic car and with all the possibilities just from an app in your home, love it.
(1st world issue)
I moan about all the tech in cars, but in the winter it is nice to not have to scrape ice and sit in a cold damp car while it demists.
I just get into my ford focus rs start the engine and and push heated seats and windows and drive away 2 minutes 🤣
Good for you 👍
Think ill stay in and wait for the sun to come out 😂
Surprised Tesla didn't think to put in door handle heaters, they seem to think of everything else.
Great design logic 😂😂
How to claim a problem where there is none really.
Simply use pre-conditioning . Defrosting is not only no problem, it is useful because it defrosts also mirrors etc.
Correct. But clearly there is a problem with some Tesla owners not understanding how frameless windows as I've now seen 5 cases in the UK in the last 6 days on Facebook where owners have broken their Tesla glass.
@ that is true but then again many car owners who get a car with frameless doors are clueless. Not a special Tesla thing 😎
Regards,
A rational Model 3 owner, in proper Nordic climate
Dont like frameless doors...
I agree. They're a pain.
I am poor and can’t afford a Tesla, nevertheless a very useful video applicable to most cars. Many Thanks!
Or you could buy a BYD Seal, solid frozen one click of the key fob and your in😂
Hello from Finland.
So these Tesla things are great in California or Finland but rubbish in the UK? Looks like feeble design, based on this video.
And if u have an emergency and u have to leave right away.
No different to any other car (with frameless windows) if it's frozen.
Why the f frameless,??? Why the ridiculous doorhandles?
I can't see the point of frameless doors. Premium sporty cars have them, but they're a pain.
As for the door handles, they improve efficiency, so Tesla always has flush handles and these were meant to be an improvement over the Model S which were too complicated and unreliable.
@GoGreenAutos if you look at bmw new doorhandles the aerodynamics are almost nonexistent - the area is nonexistent and the turbulence of a small hole is close to nonexistent
@GoGreenAutos imo its an awful trade.. to save 0.05 watts
defrost alkohol use on door and glass
This is ridiculous, just pour Luke warm water over the glass and door handles?!? My 2 series coupe has similar door window design and the handles freeze. The luke warm water takes about 1 minute 🫠
hot water may crack the window 😂 stop givin bs advice
Where did I say HOT water?? Luke warm!
Just pour lots of boiling water on the glass-problem solved! No more ice. Or glass…..😂
How I open my VW in winter. Pull handle. A gap will magically appear afterwards.
Frameless windows are a pain in the ass on any car
I would agree. I really can't see the benefits.
@@GoGreenAutos the benefit is, that our cars were cheaper 😄
I had 2 Mustangs with frameless windows. The problem with the Teslas (and some other cars) is that they have the windows tuck up under a lip. No lip = no strike surface. The rubber gasket around the window frame was enough to keep noise and rain out. 1994-2004 in Canada, and drove them year round.
If you researched the car you would know how to defrost the car and not look ignorant in your post..🤣😂🤣😂
It’s absolutely useless, no idea why they made it frameless?
I had two Tesla’s before, now BMW IX, same useless flimsy feeling frameless doors. I now carry a window defrost spray to spray on the window seal to help window unstick itself as well as preheating!
I assume cost. A frameless door must be much cheaper to manufacture. But then no budget cars have them, only top end cars.
Weight savings.
