  • Hey friends!
    Join me in repotting my root-bound Monstera deliciosa houseplant! I feel like a bad plant mom for letting it go so far! You'll be happy to hear that my monstera is doing great now, and loving his new pot. My apologies if the audio sounds off; our patio is right by the AC units so it unfortunately gets a little loud out there. Do you guys have any plants that desperately need a repot? Let me know in the comments below!
    As always, thank you guys for watching!

    Hi! I randomly came across your video, you did a great demonstration! Just wanted to let you know that for this type of plant you actually don’t want to compress the soil because it can lead to root rot. You want to keep those roots nice and airy . After a while the soil will start to compact from all the watering so it’s helpful to “fluff “ up the soil every now and then being careful not to disrupt the roots . Cheers and happy potting ! 😊🪴

      That definitely makes sense, thank you so much for the info!! ✨We do keep a little bamboo stick in the pot and like to use it to aerate the soil when we see it getting compacted from watering 😄

    Yours is beautiful ! I just repotted a large one I got from Lowe's just a few weeks ago into 5 pots and it was Soo rootbound.. like all the roots holding the shape of the pot and there was only a top layer of soil then all roots 😳🤭and must have been like that for so long poor thing... It lost a lot of roots but at least it can breathe now and they all have a chance at new life !!

      Thank you! Oooh that’s so exciting though, I’m sure it will totally flourish now that it’s been repotted and taken care of! 😊🌿 it’s honestly crazy how quickly they grow too once they’re in a good environment.

    Thanks for the video! I recently bought a monstera and literally can't push a finger into the soil because it's all roots... Looks like you posted this about a year ago, so wondering if yours is doing well?

    • @KelseyStyron
      @KelseyStyron  2 года назад +3

      Mine is thriving! I have to prune it fairly often because it’s growing so much. I would definitely recommend repotting yours asap since you just purchased it. The soil they come in is usually pretty depleted, especially if it’s mostly roots at this point.

      @@KelseyStyron I don’t know what to do !! Mine is sooooo root bound like twice as much as yours idk how to get into it. I feel like I’ll break all the roots

      @@dianaveletyan5136 I did mine outside with the hose, and tried to spray all the dirt out from between the roots, as well as a bucket of water to help. It was ALL ROOTS and took me forever, but I managed to untangle the big ones even though I broke some of the little ones off.
      I'd give the roots a healthy spray of hydrogen peroxide before repotting, just to be safe.
      My one plant turned into 5. 🤦🏻‍♀️ But they should be happier after today!

    Is there a reason why you chose Potting Mix over Potting Soil? I have 5 large Monsteras ready for bigger pots. I just was wondering if the mix is a better choice? Thanks in advance for any help.

    This is how my wide form adansonii looks and rot began on the outer roots that had no soil around it... no idea what I'm doing but I'm going to copy what you're doing here and wish it the best 😭

    • @KelseyStyron
      @KelseyStyron  3 года назад

      Oh no! I have read that when plants get root bound they can block the water from draining out of the pot and cause root rot. I would definitely cut the rotted spots off if you can! Best of luck💞✨

    • @heyhoneyy
      @heyhoneyy 3 года назад

      @@KelseyStyron I did right after I watched this! I just did basically exactly what you did. She's sitting up pretty so far. I know things like pothos like being bound, but adansonii do not like to be at all. Fortunately there was no rot inside, only aome of the ones that were up against the pot with nowhere to go. The seller said adansonii aren't sensitive in that sense and will enjoy a repot so after seeing you do this I just went in. Thanks for responding!

      @@heyhoneyy oh that’s awesome to hear!! Yeah repotting can be tough on some plants but others definitely handle it much better. I bet your adansonii will be so happy now 😄

    While pulling roots apart, your plant's leaves were banging against the wall! A better awareness of the Entire plant thruout the process would be more beneficial to the plant.

    • @KelseyStyron
      @KelseyStyron  Год назад +1

      Luckily she’s still alive and well! 😊 We don’t mind our plants getting moved around a bit, most of them stay outdoors for most of the year and are used to wind/rain moving their leaves around. For some plants, that type of movement can be beneficial for them.

      Hi and ty for replying! Clive Baxter has done extensive research about plants having feelings and even crying when about to get cut! I also talk to my plants and let them know what's about to happen before transplanting, and I learned that we are to "ask them" to release their roots! I think you will be amazed by Clive Baxter,s research if you Google him!
      Happy Planting!

      @@MicheleRovillo-pe4hj of course, thank you for commenting! Oh, I love that! 💚 I do talk to my plants and tell them nice things, reassure them when pruning, etc. I hadn’t thought about that when repotting; I will make it a point to talk to them when doing so. I’ll also look into that research, that seems very enlightening 🌿

      I usually go for potting mix because traditional potting soil tends to get compacted really easily. The potting mix aerates better and allows for easier water drainage. Hope that helps! 😊
