    I've been driving jeeps for well over 25 years... 2 CJs, 1 YJ, 2 TJs, and 1 JKR, and 1 JKUR... I've noticed getting a Jeep wave is usually dependant on whose driving the other jeep, and its relation to the city limits.
    The worst offender is middle aged women inside the city limites... followed by any Jeep with low-pro tires on over-sized flashy wheels... and then there is the poor Jeeps that have been drug thru the chrome section of a JC Whitney catalog... usually sporting a fart pipe that's been taken off their owners crashed Honda Civic...
    I've also found that "mall crawlers" usually are the first to wave... breaking their elbow to get their arm out the window. They're trying to compensate for their lack of off-roading by waving their hand off.
    I don't think this is necessary a JK issue... it's just the people who wouldn't wave, are more prone to buying the newer jeep design. The "nicer" Jeep builds them, the more "non-jeep" people are going to buy them... the bastards just don't know they're supposed to wave.

      I don't own a jeep, I am more of a truck guy but I have always been fascinated with them. The wife had an older grand cherokee years back and it had tons of problems which kind of turned me off to them which from what I read about them is sort of part of the culture. The wave really came from the motorcycle riders first I believe. In Sc we have them all over the place but there really is no places to go offroading anymore short of the dirt road that is a little washed out where you made need your 4wd depending on how bad it has rained. Nonetheless, I may still get a used one now that at least one of the kids is halfway out the door.

    The jeep wave is alive and well in Arizona, even in our the largest cities, like Phoenix. I bought a JK a couple years ago and wondered why other jeep drivers were waving at me. I waved back thinking they might be my neighbors, but I don't have that many neighbors. Saying 'hi' to other vehicles regardless of make or model is pretty normal when you're way off the road here, but not in town. Then I realized it's a 'Jeep Thing'. I wave first now...

    I've noticed that most of the Jeep owners that don't wave own JKs. Must be cuz they bought a Jeep to mall crawl. Not hating on JK owners - it's just the simple truth.

    Solidarity Jeep Brother!! Jeep Wave Etiquette has been a hot topic of discussion between me and my fellow jeep colleagues. I think the problem comes from the recent popularity of Jeeps. The Jeep was always a sub-culture vehicle. Like people who own Saab's or Subarus. It was rare to find another of your kind on the road, so when you did, you wanted to give props to a person crazy enough to own a Jeep. :) Nowadays there's so many jeeps out there, that we've lost that uniqueness. We're getting more and more Jeep owners who either don't know or don't care about the rules of owning the greatest off-road vehicle in the world. For them, they just bought a kitchen appliance. Something to get them from point A to point B. Nothing more.

      Josh Zakary you said it. I love my YJ and proud to own it and have worked on it. Most of the folks around where I live have paid 40-50K for the ones they have. They look at me like I'm an idiot when I wave at them, but the guys and gals who have older or customized Jeeps always throw up a hand.

    • @T4RJon
      @T4RJon 7 лет назад +6

      I think the pupularity happened when Jeeps lost their character. Back in the day of the CJ's, you bought a Jeep for the capability. You knew you were sacrificing some luxuries for a vehicle you could leave the top off of and not have to worry about a little rain, or take the doors off and still have side mirrors without being swindled into purchasing A-Post relocator mounts, leaving an ugly circle in your door. Nowadays, there is little difference between the amenities of a standard car or SUV, and a Jeep. The Jeep wave was meaningful because of the comradery between folks who had purchased a Jeep for its capability, durability, and versatility, rather than its amenities. As that became less of a difference, the comradery was watered down.

    • @ltsmeet
      @ltsmeet 7 лет назад +1

      Yeah, the comradery with your mechanic is something all Jeep owners share.

    Great content Jake. I've been seriously thinking about fixing up an old beater Jeep, that's how I stumbled on the channel.
    A 1979 Jeep CJ 5 was my first car. I loved that thing, but when California tightened up the smog laws, I couldn't get the thing to pass and had to give it up. That was 20 years ago now, but I still have a tendency to give a 2 finger wave to passing jeeps. Now when I've spoken to younger friends who have picked up Jeeps, they don't even know what I'm talking about when I say "Jeep wave". I hope the community keeps it going though.

    Welcome to my beautiful state! Glad you're enjoying the many wonders and beauties we have to offer. I also understand the oppressive lack of Jeep wave. I do my best to wave at every Jeep. especially older ones like a CJ. Independace Path is a fun one, nothing too crazy on it. Lastly, I agree with the Garden of The Gods in Colorado Springs. unless you plan to head north, in which case, Estes Park is a cool town with loads to see and some trails just a little bit away.

    Creede, CO is a great place for a meet-up. It has a long silver mining history. From Creede you can drive above the headwaters of the Rio Grande River over Stony Pass or up to Lake City over Engineer Pass to Silverton. Wheeler Geologic Area has a good trail to it too. BTW the Jeep Wave is alive and well in Oklahoma especially in the Tulsa area.

    Here in Pennsylvania. Had my '97 TJ for a dozen years and have been waving for a dozen years. Here's my unscientific findings on the Jeep wave. 90% of CJ's wave. 85% of the YJ's wave. A solid 75% of the TJ guys wave. 40% of the JK guys wave. 25% of the JKU drivers wave. 90% of lifted/modified jeeps wave.

    • @thomas8734
      @thomas8734 4 года назад

      Im here in CO and have both a tj and a bike and dislike both waves. I always thought a guy could be a child rapist but ride a bike, should I give him "respect" just cause he's on two wheels? There are millions of both vehicles on the roads; there's nothing special about them to be waiving all day long. Now, if you come across someone on the trails, then a nod or wave in agreement you are both enjoying the same activity is cool. I think I mainly avoid the wave because I'm "supposed" to do it.

The whole time I just kept thinking, I know that spot by the river near Delta, or even I know that spot by the horseshoe pits at Canyon View park. Hope you find better stuff the next time you pass through.

    regarding the windshield cracks - welcome to Colorado! having lived in Wyoming for a few years before coming back home to Colorado, I can one hundred percent agree with the you about the lack of jeep waves. I think an issue might be that most of the on-road jeeps are owned by transplants to Colorado wanting a good snow vehicle. once you get off road, the jeep wave is alive and well. most people just do the two finger salute from the steering wheel or a casual raise of the hand from the arm dangling outside. for trail suggestions, being a front range guy, I'd recommend heading for the Red Feather Lakes area northwest of Ft. Collins. trails range from easy-peasy to full on sphincter clinching.
    good luck, God speed and welcome to Colorful Colorado.

    I never owned a Jeep but had many bikes. Growing up in small town Arkansas I learned LONG ago to wave. Something my dad taught me when I was about 3 standing up in the seat right beside him (no car seats or seatbelts) and how to honk big trucks ha! Nowadays everyone is in a hurry and has lost a bunch of human kindness or afraid cause the world has gotten so bad. I remember Breaking down one night back in the late 80’s I bet 10 Cars stopped to check on me. After that I still try and check on people on the side of the road but you have to watch your back these day and age.

    I'm glad you brought this up! I was just in CO for a week and I got zero waves, I figured it's cause I'm in a jk or cause I have Jersey plates? Oh well I still waved to every Jeep

    I'm not new to Jeeps, I had a '95 WJ for several years, but I just bought a TJ as a daily driver after many years of being Jeep-less. I'll say for certain that I NEVER got a Jeep-wave in my WJ (stock, 2WD, so no biggie). But in my stock little TJ I get them almost every day. From YJs, TJs, and yes, even JKs. Haven't gotten one from an XJ or WJ yet, and come to think of it I don't think I've ever gotten one or had one returned from a JKU. I will admit to sometimes being a bit snobbish and not initiating the Jeep wave when I come across a JK (I mean, protocol dictates they should initiate, right?). But it's all good. We all love our Jeeps. So spread the love right?
    PS, I've watched some of your CJ build videos, but I can't remember - do you have lockers?

    There's a badass system of trails alongside and behind Pikes Peak. I know they had a fire since I lived there, so not sure if it's all still accessible.
    To get to it, it's by the Broadmoor Resort or Hotel.
    I have pics from the trail I can send you if you'd like as well.

    Haha you've seen my XJ! Stock and the paint is aging pretty badly! I live in Los Angeles and I rarely ever get a Jeep wave back! But I never give up because once in a while (like once a month) I get a wave back haha!

  • @twinstar818

    I'll keep waving in my stock JK out here in Los Angeles. I get about 50% waves back. Maybe 40-50%. Sometimes commuting the morning grind to work on the freeway or stopped up streets I've forgotten or don't wave due to insane dangerous morning traffic where I'm watching out for people switching lanes at the last second with no signal and suddenly stopped traffic, or I don't want to wave causing surprise to the other driver and possibly causing an accident. Basically needing full concentration and no room for the wave.

    In my '84 Grand Wagoneer, I wave to other Jeeps. Yes, even to what I consider to be a silly vehicle, the Renegade. I live in a part of Idaho where a good portion of vehicles are Jeeps. I get about a 5% return rate on my wave. It's sad really. Mostly I get folks in older Jeeps waving back. I did have one guy in a Willy's Truck chase me down to tell me how awesome it is to see older Jeeps on the road.

    I have XJ, KK and WJ all lifted all with tires, all tinted, custom bumpers on two... the KK is limited with bulk body kit...
    NO wave from anyone but when I drive the WJ from other modified WJ owners and that is 1-100....
    JK's are as Collin said "Mall Crawlers", on any trail.. Waves are King usually a stop and chat.

    There are a few good places you could do meetups! Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs is really pretty, and then you could go on Rampart Range Road which is a beautiful and pretty easy trail in the mountains!
    Another great place would be Mt Evans which is the highest paved road in North America!

    I like in Phoenix and I admit in town I scale back the Jeep wave to only those that are topless with weather extremes, dust storm, 105+, etc... However, once I am out of the city the Jeep wave protocol is in full force.

    I've owned a YJ, 2 TJ's, and now drive a JKU (wife wanted something more like a minivan and i compromised with a 4-door jeep). I have waved at every wrangler while in every wrangler I've ever owned. If it's not a wrangler though, no waves. i did live for a couple years in Boulder and waves there were rather rare which also blew me away for the same reasons that Jake states. I'm back in Indiana now and i'll sometimes get snubbed but i think it's mostly because people are looking at their phones.

    Don't forget Northern Colorado. The Yampa Valley this time of year is amazing. If you make it to Steamboat Springs come visit Moots. The best hand made titanium bikes in the world are made here. Jeep trails are just starting to open. The farther away from I-70 you are whether it's North or South the better.

    I have a JK Rubi Hard Rock and used to wave to every Wrangler/CJ I saw. After 1,000 weird looks from soccer moms or yuppie dudes who have no clue I gave up. Now it is mainly modded Jeeps or the offroad ones like Rubicons (expecting they maybe more than just taxiing kids) that I wave to.
