Having read through most of the comments below I really am surprised at how ignorant some Americans are about the rest of the world. In NZ only 5% of the population own guns and the other 95% don't want or need them. Yes you have your 2nd Amendment and it is way out of date but you will NEVER change and NZ will NEVER be like the US. We speak the same language but that is where the similarities end

Laura Voyce - Your government is not telling you the truth, that banning guns will cause you to have more murders, rapes and robberies. Right now all homes in New Zealand are being protected from invasion by criminals with a fear of death deterrent that the guns provide. The criminals don't know which homes have guns, so most avoid invading all homes. Once the criminals know that all homes are gun free zones, get ready to see a home invasion epidemic, because if you look at statistics of countries after gun control, it shows home invasion murders, rapes, and robberies increase. Australia is the latest country to discover this fact, and now they have an epidemic of home invasions by APEX gangs. Brazil banned all gun ownership and their home invasions also became an epidemic, and it caused their murders and rapes to double. The new leader of Brazil and its government have finally realized the failures of gun control and are promising to give the people their guns back. IF I lived in New Zealand, I'd be putting bars on my windows and getting some steel doors, because you are gonna need it if they ban guns.

I have lived both in the United States and Australia so I understand this debate better than most people here. However, in Australia/NZ the thinking is also very different about guns among the majority. People here see the greater good for society than an individual's right to bear a weapon. Also, these two countries don't have porous borders where illegal weapons can pour in. Australia/NZ are very different to the US. We are talking chalk and cheese here.

Just because Americans have been conned that somehow giving access to weapons that can cause massive damage to all citizens makes them 'free' due to their own gulability doesnt mean the rest of the world should have to put up with their stupidity. If gun laws dont work on countries with functioning and not corrupt invested police forces then why is it the rate of deaths per capita from guns is thirty times higher over a decade compared to Australia, which has a ban on automatic weapons. In Australia we also havent had a mass shooting since 1996. Banning automatic weapons works and has proven to work in all countries that arent overun by poverty. Anyone stop to think for a second why the evil, disgusting psychopath opted to go to New Zealand? Its pretty obvious he couldnt obtain a weapon that could cause that amount of damage due to Australia's gun laws. New Zealand and their citizens are wonderful. How many people are there in American jails who have committed firearm offenses while doing a job. A massive number. Having guns on general sale actually makes people less safe, as the figures in the video show, especially for the police who are armed. More police are killed in one month in the US than have ever been killed in the UK.

Every day, we would see the names of our lost citizens, and know how terrible our gun policies are, as the evidence scrolls on the screen. Every day, new names. It will galvanise the opposition of our deadly archaic adherence to the 2nd Amendment. As a child, I saw the names of every local soldier killed in Vietnam during the nightly news. So here's what I hear Robyn saying: the NRA is a toothless lion but the American electorate has yet to realize that. Also, that those elected officials/representatives who cower to the demands of the NRA are cowardly because they are bending to the will of a toothless lion.
Here's the thing: as the electorate, we hold all the power. We've given it away and allowed others to abuse the position of trust we've awarded them.
Former President Obama debated this issue in public forums with members of the public to help all of us understand what was going on. We had a choice back then, as we do in 2020 to demand better of those we offer the opportunity to represent us. In the end, the NZ PM was able to execute because that's what the electorate want and they made their desires known loud and clear.
If we want better, we have to demand it. And we have to stop being apathetic, afraid and irresponsible with the privilege given us as eligible voters.

To answer your question why we are behind is because you have a few factors. 1. They talk about guns they know of not the ones on the street that are not registered. 2. You dont have the same underlying issues in other countries as we do here. Ive been to other countries like ours and its not as bad. 3. The definitions of these weapons and what they are banning still does not stop the issues. Things like this will still happen if we dont get a grip on mental illness and other underlying issues first. The question I have is why is it so bad now and getting worse? Where is all this coming from. I grew up in the 80's and 90's yet this was not a real thing till late 90's and on. We need to figure this out.

Terell - Good point. I read where most mass shooters were on ssri antidepressants that caused them to do it. NZ only has 4 million people

    • @vikz5786

I get what you're saying but attributing mass shooter motives to mental illness rubs me the wrong way. I understand the power of marketing that's fuelling the online propaganda machines churning out the hate messaging - and how vulnerable minds can be easily swayed. IMO it would be simpler to target the online propaganda industry. Hit them with regulation and if necessary via the courts. America's the spiritual home of the lawsuit so it shouldn't be an issue

    • @JohnPitt920
      @JohnPitt920 5 лет назад

Vik Z - It's not mental illness but the drugs that treat it that are causing 95% of mass shootings. Years ago people that were depressed took all natural things like L tryptophan for depression, that didn't have these homicidal and suicidal behavior side effects. Suicides recently surpassed car accidents as the number one cause of death by unnatural causes in the US, and it's due to these ssri antidepressants. The government won't ban these pills, because big pharma owns the politicians. Big Pharma makes billions per year on these death pills and they're not going to give up a cash cow like that.

“ a military firearm that is chambered for ammunition of reduced size or propellant charge and that has the capacity to switch between semiautomatic and fully automatic fire.”
Nice try MSNBC. An AR-15 is not an Assault Rifle and can only shoot as fast as the individual can pull the trigger. Columbine occurred during the federal assault weapons ban. Virginia Tech shooter used two handguns. Banning some big scary looking rifle isn’t going to stop shootings. Crazies will use other methods. I really hope the citizens realize their government just violated the whole premise of Article 33 of the Geneva Convention: individuals should not be collectively punished for one persons crimes. Geneva Convention considers this a war crime. Granted it was written for times during war so it’s not completely applicable in NZ under its current definition but if you ask me the mass shooting was a act of war by a terrorist. Regardless they just made anyone who doesn’t turn their guns in into a criminal, who could serve jail time. Collective punishment over one persons actions is very immoral and unethical.

ratman I respect that. NZ has virtually no gun crime, and never fought off a tyrannical government for freedom so I understand why people don’t see the importance of individual gun rights. But NZ gun restrictions will require people to turn in guns, if you don’t you become a criminal and could serve jail time. How is that not collective punishment under restrictions. I understand why NZ people don’t seem to care having gun rights taken away by their government, but how are they not upset about them banning freedom of information with books, news organizations, and websites? Restricting information, and disarming the public are two very important precursors to a dictatorship government.

To purchase any firearm you have to obtain a Police issued Firearms Licence (includes background checks, completing a firearms test, and having secure storage for any firearm). Even though the ownership of handguns have been heavily restricted in NZ for many years there is still about 1.5 million firearms for a population of about 5 million people. Most firearms would be owned by farmers or recreational hunters. New Zealanders also don't believe in owning a firearm for personal protection.

Here's my take: guns should be legal, but people should need to have a gun license which would entail gun operation and safety training. Just show the guy at the gun store your gun i.d. and bingo bongo easy as that buy whatever you want.

@Allen Tompkins "TRASHING ONE AMENDMENT ..MAKES THE ENTIRE BILL OF RITES ....USELESS"
      Nope.
"ITS EXISTING LAWS NOT BEING ENFORCED THAT ALLOWS ACCESS TO FIRE ARMS"
Nope. Most US states have ZERO requirement for background checks for private sales.
"researchers have found that one way to limit mass killings would be to identify those at greatest risk of committing these types of crimes.
      "
They've also found not letting nay fool have a gun is rather effective.

@Allen Tompkins Other than the cute idea that civvies with small arms is all that's stopping the 4th Reich, I'm not sure what the point of all that was. There are plenty of free nations who remain so, and not through threat of violence. Heck, several nations outrank the USA in EVERY freedom index, and they don't need to let anyone have a gun to do it...

@Allen Tompkins "name the ones that formed by its civilians fighting off the tyrannical government controlling them"
Do you think that's the only way to be free? Violence?
"are you saying the founders of this country were wrong"
Frequently. They were largely slave owning hypocrites remember.
Thomas Jefferson believed that government was the greatest, if not only, threat to individual liberty."
What did his slaves think was the greatest threat to their liberty?
      "With this principle"
      No, it's an opinion.

@Allen Tompkins "From 1991 to 1997 the U.S. homicide rate fell 30 percent. Liberals credit a strong economy and low unemployment; conservatives point to three-strikes laws and increasing use of the death penalty. We are uncertain which factors to credit."
At the same time, household gun ownership rates fell from an estimated 51% to 34%. Clearly not the only factor, but the gun lobby likes to discount it because.... it's inconvenient.
"Clearly, these laws cannot be credited for a fall in homicide that had begun two years earlier."
True, and they were largely ineffective when there are multiple ways of bypassing it. Don't measure the effectiveness of gun restrictions by looking at poorly implemented patchwork laws.
"Switzerland, where most adult males keep military-type guns at home, have low homicide rates"
The Swiss are FAR more restrictive than the US with their gun laws.
"In telling Americans, especially young ones, that they live in the most violent nation on earth, we are slandering our country."
It's not the most violent, they just have over 5 times higher chance of being murdered that a citizen of most other developed nations.
"Myths tell us that nations with strict anti-gun laws have low rates of suicide and homicide"
Correct that to; developed nations with... and you can remove the 'myth' bit.
"In short, we all must admit that we have much to learn about the causes of violence."
So you've changed your mind on the US having sufficient laws to keep guns out of the wrong hands then?

I think not kiddo. Both nations were surrounded by potential enemies. NZ is surrounded by thousands of kilometres of ocean.
