Even in the safest country, murders do happen because it's a human nature to kill with whatever means possible and for whatever reason they have. The ONLY possible solution would be to reduce the number of killings that can be done by a single individual, which is why the safest countries in the world have the strictest gun laws including Japan. Over a million guns in NZ. One used to cause a mass casualty event. All must now hand them in now, even though they obey the law. Said persons who would partake in such event don't care what they do is already illegal. Okay...
That’s like saying “alright so we have a million people in this city, now one of them is a bad criminal so the logical move is to bomb the city and murder all citizens so nobody there becomes a criminal again”
Before calling this a failure, note that these kind of mass shootings happen every week in America. And also note that in the US, police come in with semi military gear, guns drawn, pumped up with adrenaline since they know guns are everywhere in America. That's a law enforcement mistake waiting to happen. In America, people feel they need a hand gun because everybody has one, so it becomes a self propagating situation, triggered by fear. One thing is clear, if a gun is present in the home, the most likely person to die a gun death is a family member in that same home. Don't be so quick to condemn gun reform, objective reviews of the gun reform effort in Australia showed a clear survival benefit.
Banning guns at a particular RoF is more akin to setting a speed limit on roads - like we do - and making sure they have a license - like we do - and keeping our vehicles warranted for safe use and registered to the owner so they're responsible for it. There are a hefty number of restrictions to cars so that's a rather weak analogy. Also vehicles are essential to keep our economies and societies operating, whereas firearms above a certain rate-of-fire serve no functional purpose that an alternative weapon - which remain legal - can serve.
That analogy does not hold water. It's because many people crashed and died that it's mandatory that cars have certain safety feature like a seatbelt, airbags, ABS. Also cars are not primarily designed to cause harm it's a consequence. Guns, on the other hand, are designed to shoot and harm things.
andrew jackson Actually that is incorrect. These are existing gangs and gang members. Deportation from Australia of gang members have been happening for over 10 years and not that high of a number anyway

Even if there was, who's to say that there wouldn't have been more if the buyback/reform didn't happen? How do you measure a negative?

Here's my take away from this: Heres a guy who got shot through no fault of any law abiding gun owner. How sad that he's paralyzed. Laws changed, making many guns illegal. People desiring to remain law abiding turned in guns to the government. The actual number of guns still in private hands is not known, but it is believed by some to be a majority of them. Guy in charge of buy back doesn't care because he did his job. Guy who was shot feels safer because guns were turned in by law abiding citizens. You should feel sad for him.
The firearms used in the March 15th mosque attacks were acquired legally. The gunman held a firearms licence with an "A" endorsement and he started buying his arsenal in December 2017, a month after acquiring his licence. No fault of any law abiding gun owner, you say?
@@cafn8ed74 He was, right up until the moment he shot and killed 51 innocent people - including children. That's the thing about outlaws, they aren't outlaws until after the damage has been done. Think about the mass shooting teenagers who murdered children in their own schools - many were law abiding minors.
@Trying Times The masses aren't defenseless. Most of our firearms remain legal. I know both of mine are. Preventative measures aren't in place to stop people from going crazy. The Chch shooter started buying his arsenal two years before he attacked the mosque. His manifesto (of which I read the first 12 pages) had been written over multiple years. This wasn't an instance of someone going crazy, this is an instance of someone planning, funding, and carrying out an attack predetermined years in advance. He came with pipe bombs that took some construction. He bought 5 firearms in his van and was chased off by a Muslim NZ citizen with a handgun - after the damage had been done. I see the comparison drawn to vehicles all the time, which is funny, considering we place a speed limit on our roads, require vehicles to be registered to the owners, vehicles require a warrant of fitness, drivers must have a license, drivers and passengers must wear seatbelts. Vehicles are essential for our modern society and economy to operate. Firearms above a certain rate-of-fire have one purpose: mass bodily harm. In effect, all the govt. has done is place a speed limit on firearms.
@Trying Times So unless laws prevent 100% of crime, we shouldn't have laws? Your brother's story is tragic and there is a discussion to be hard about the effects of the war on drugs - but drug users are ultimately responsible for their own actions. This man robbed 51 people of their freedoms - they were not responsible for that. He may have obtained other methods to commit his crime - we will never know if he would've been able to cause as much harm as he did by other measures. But we do know that he managed to do so with an arsenal acquired within the bounds of the law. You consider a ban on firearms above a certain rate of fire as "giving up" your freedoms. So you are no longer free? Do you not have the right to free speech? To privacy? To freedom of worship? All of these were taken from 51 innocent people by an arsenal purchased legally. Any measure to make that more difficult is a win in my books - we still have weapons to defend ourselves, we still have weapons to hunt. No law is going to eliminate 100% of crime. That doesn't mean we shouldn't do our utmost to prevent it.
the public should be able to own their guns..... if anything self defense should be a reason to own firearms, because sometimes bad stuff happens (like spree shootings) and there are no cops around

Couldn’t you simply answer that question by showing the murder (with a gun) statistics from the years both before and after the gun reform? I can save you some trouble
1. NZ didn’t have a “gun violence” problem before the reform as the numbers were already super low.
2. In the years following the gun reform, the average murder rate with a gun didn’t change.
So the answer is no.
The goal was to stop shootings like that at the attack. If they wanted to stop all gun violence they would of banned all firearms.
bluewardog you can ban guns all you want, it won’t stop gun violence.
bluewardog shootings like that will still happen. They will only use different guns.

@@mark-ish This isn't a straw man argument. Also banning things outright, eg drugs and weapons simply won't work.
With the internet it is easier than ever to access anything you want, for a price however.
We need to create education around weapons and drugs, provide services to people with addiction and community to those that feel excluded from society. We should also implement a better register and license system for fire arm owners. The people that use the guns legally won't have any issues jumping through hoops to keep them.
Guns don't kill people, people kill people. Should we ban cars and alcohol? No more drink driving, problem solved.
@@JakobG13 Most countries that banned firearms have done so successfully including Japan and South Korea. So your argument is a fail. Second, if you think that education and counseling can save innocent people from being killed by a lunatic, you are very mistaken and your naivety would cause innocent people to die. Even in the safest country, murders do happen because it's a human nature to kill with whatever means possible and for whatever reason they have.
The ONLY possible solution would be to reduce the number of killings that can be done by a single individual, which is why the safest countries in the world have the strictest gun laws including Japan. Japan has almost zero gun incidents and almost never a mass shooting unlike in the West. You CAN reduce mass killings by taking away guns from civilians. But it's impossible to stop every single one of them. But it is the best possible option we have.
@@JakobG13 The only possible option for the West, including America, is to either arm everyone or disarm everyone by strong federal regulations and law enforcement. Even if that means to kicking down everyone's doors and taking away their weapon, it CAN be done. Instead, it should be so that EVERYONE can arm themselves. The only weapons that should be prohibited is fully-automatic weapons and explosives. America can't be like Japan, unfortunately, and America will ALWAYS have mass shootings unless we go marshal law.

Many people crashed and died, lets ban cars, now walk to work.

@@jakewright1932 clearly a person who shoots up a mosque is not a law abiding citizen.
-How do you know the program was a success?
-Yes
I am a Muslim and ex police officer before and a certified bodyguard and the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a freaking good guy with a gun

the public should be able to own their guns..... if anything self defense should be a reason to own firearms, because sometimes bad stuff happens (like spree shootings) and there are no cops around
The guy wasnt from there and had a completely illegal weapon and the parliament said that these guns are in the hands of our citizens and kill to many ... all forms of government are looking to seize as much power as possible and its honestly sickening
Was only illegal once he put them clips in it
Only good people would have turned in their firearms, so what purpose did it have?
Violence is in human nature. I would rather be armed with a gun then a knife if someone was trying to kill me.
I'd rather have my enemies feel the medieval pain of the knife though. A gun which fired knives would be awesome.
Violence is human nature so let’s make it easier for humans to be violent by giving everyone guns! Brilliant!
@@On_The_Piss great hyperbole there Honda! You are definitely somebody we can entrust! Lol

No one including the government?
Robert sit down and shut up
Absolutely gross how they disarmed the law abiding public in Europa.
There is no legitimate reason to punish individuals who did nothing wrong because one criminal decided to harm others.
Hey Vice, did you happen to film any mass shooters, violent offenders turning in their rifles? I would love to hear how the new laws put in place by the gov changed their hearts on doing harm onto other fair citizens.
This isn’t about individual crazy people.
You remove the majority of guns you prevent killers in the future of obtaining those Weapons.
@@commonsense31 THATS RIGHT! I remember now, the Gov did that exact same tactic to help stop all drunk drivers from plowing into legal drivers, they banned all the alcohol. So now even if you don't drive while intoxicated you cant get alcohol, to save all the children. Now that I think about it, there was a similar effort when it came to drugs ...but this was a war against them... seem to be effective by the statistics that I have been able to find.

As a kiwi I would like to remind the Americans that our countries are very different. America is soaked in guns so i doubt it would work in America. But here in New Zealand we are a small islands at the edge of the world... its more likely to work for us. You don't need a grenade launcher for deer hunting you don't need a machine gun. It just makes it too easy to slaughter heaps of people. P.s your government turned tyrannical ages ago and y'all never bothered to fight back so I don't know why you bother with the machine guns anyway. But I will admit it makes way more sense for Americans to be well armed. Here in NZ we still might have a chance to control it.
"You don't need a grenade launcher for deer hunting you don't need a machine gun." Thanks Kiwi prick. That's just the kind of snootiness we always expect from Aussie, Kiwis, and Europeans. Bravo! Now go and repaint your shriveled old "deck".
@@hubertcumberdale2651 I wish i had a deck to repaint. I like guns as much as the next man. But in every society there are plenty of idiots with little to no self control. And i would rather they couldn't easily access weapons for mass human annihilation. All i'm really trying to say is our situations are very different. If i was in America i would like to carry a gun, i would. If i'm in New Zealand i still believe we might have a chance to limit these bullets sprayers that can cut down crowds in seconds. New Zealand is a really weird place, there is both a left and right there just like the US, but neither side seems particularly extreme. After listening to the video, there are good points to be said for nearly everyone talking here.

Dangerous words, if he was maybe living in the USA. In NZ, not so much
Oh yes, a police state happening in New Zealand, might as well call San Marino to be close to an authoritarian governement.
You blame it on non-law abiding citizens yet when there’s an aspect of the law that’s changed which you dislike you decide to become a non-law abiding citizens. LOL. Lovely bit of logic. Love that.
JediMindTrickz you can’t just make people criminals either, which is what bans do.
Johnny Gooch no it doesn’t. Not if you a “law abiding citizen” take your now illegal weapon in for destruction. If you don’t then yes you have now become an unlawful citizen because you chose not to abide the law.
I dont think people understand that illegal and unconstitutional laws are NOT LAWS. you do NOT have to follow illegally passed laws
How can a government buy back something they never owned?
All NZ citizens should have the same access to firearms as the police do, because they face the same threats police do and in fact face them prior to police even getting involved. Police are a reactionary force, the people are the ones on the frontline. If only there was someone, or even better multiple people, in the area with the right tool for the job when that lunatic did what he did. They would have saved lives and cost the taxpayer a hell of a lot less in jailing fees for that oxygen thief.
Well said totally agree with you.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In the US we just offer empty thoughts and prayers and wait for the next one. 🙁
Guns laws have increased, yet it seems to keep getting worse. But it actually isnt. You are just hearing about it more becuase everyone has a social media feed glued to them 24/7. Guns dont kill people, the government does.
In the US:
The chance of being a victim in a school shooting is 1 in 614,000,000...
80% of gun deaths are suicides and negligent discharges...

I'm sure you weep for the tobacco industry too when right-thinking reform is changing that industry for society's best interest as well.
All guns should be sold to people who should have passed mantel fitness and monthly getting it to keep it and criminal history should be clean

America has a mix of different cultures. That is why violence will always be here. The best method to counter violence here is the ability to own firearms. America has made it very clear. We love our guns and we won't give them up.
