Think about this for a moment. Obviously, this weapon system has not been invented yet. If it were available, should a citizen own a weapon that could destroy a small building? I don't think so. So, if the AR-15 or AK-47 were invented today, should citizens be allowed to own one?
Well the law changed, and laws can change. Stop being against the law. By that logic I should be allowed to own anything acquired before the law banned them including drugs, chemical weapons and other bullshit.
Devyn Tucker . That’s not the point. In The 70s there weren’t any laws against the driving under the influence until Remove Intoxicated Drivers (RID) started pushing for laws against it. Deaths went from 25,000 to 10,000. Also in 74% of mass shootings the gun was obtained legally. Because when you make something easier to do it happens more.
@@Devyn_LV that is litteraly the dumbest thing ive ever heard in my live. So you actually want to argue that when drinking and driving would be allowed less people would do it ? This is litteraly a Country argument. People where drunk driving so they forbitt it. And almost nobody does it. Thats the point.
No decent hunter or recreational firearms user needs a semi-automatic weapon. If you want to shoot a wild animal, learn how to aim and fire one round from a bolt-action rifle.
The U.S. Army defines assault rifles as "short, compact, selective-fire weapons that fires a cartridge intermediate in power between submachine gun and rifle cartridges." ... It must be capable of selective fire.
Thomas Boulet No, the second amendment makes it invalid to me. I don't live in New Zealand. Lol. You have to admit that these people have no idea what they are talking about right? "Attack guns"? Come on. It's hilariously stupid.
Without the core principle that a firearm is a tool for self defense and/or protection from government tyranny, making an argument in favor of keeping almost any firearm in the face of mass murder becomes almost impossible. Saying "yeah I know 50 people were murdered, but I want to keep my guns because they are fun" is a losing argument.
Be N S O N Seriously, know that any pro 2nd amendment person who votes for Trump is insane. Trump has done more to erode gun rights in 4 years than Obama in 8
banning people with a history of violence against others from owning guns would do more than banning types of guns. people who use guns to intentionally kill others usually have a history of unjustified violence, including terrorizing intimate partners who try to leave. also, this particular gunman posted his extremist views to his Facebook account regularly. Facebook uses algorithms to track our internet usage and promote custom ads to its users on an insanely personal scale; there is no reason they cannot use such an algorithm to pick up when someone is using their site to advocate violence against others. if only the company cared about human lives half as much as it does profiting off of them.
why have traffic laws at all? just ban killing, im sure nobody will ever speed or drive recklessly again. in fact, get rid of every law except the killing one. obviously everything will work perfectly if left like that.
@CountJimbo that's not the point at all. Laws are what we use to justify the use of state force to bring people to justice. If you advocate for a law that uses force against a person who isn't doing any harm that's pretty foul. Certain crimes are harmful, other crimes are victimless.
@CountJimbo why? Because you're refusing to think? You have free speech. You could use free speech for libel, slander or even to spread propaganda that gets people killed. We punish you when you commit crimes with your speech, but we don't make speech illegal. We have many household chemicals that are poison. But we only punish you if you put them in someone's food. We don't make ownership of chemicals illegal. The question at hand here is that people should not be punished for the mere act of owning weapons, but you people are comparing it to murder and pretending we don't want a law against murder.

@dogboydesigns damn if you were gonna mention Clinton I would have figured youd have mentioned the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban where semiautomatic "military style" weapons were banned in America up until 2004.
as of 611/2019 only 547 guns have been turned in. According to the people of New Zealand is a right not a privilege. Also guns are not registered in New Zealand so the Government does not know what citizens have guns.
Congratz on letting the actions of a single person dictate the rights of an entire country. Not only is it ignorant, it's pathetic. I was going to visit New Zealand but not any more.
🚫 Removals of a style of gun does not mean safer. 🛑 Stop banning guns based on cosmetics. Gun rights are important for protection, freedom, sport and more. Can’t ban our way to utopia.
They didn't ban guns based on cosmetics? They banned based on RPM, and magazine capacity. You can still have fun and self protection with pistols, bolt action rifles, and shotguns. If a government specifically wanted to kill you, they would bomb you with a drone strike; owning a semi or fully-auto weapon would not protect you.
It's not the cosmetics of the gun that make it dangerous, it's the function of it. Being able to fire multiple rounds in quick succession has no valid use in any country not embroiled in a civil war. Bolt-action rifles and double barrelled shotguns should be the only legal firearms as they are used for valid hunting reasons. Small calibre, small magazine handguns and semi-auto rifles used for actual sporting reasons should also be allowed but only in secure lockups in shooting centres. If you're using a gun for 'fun' then you're an idiot and clearly don't respect the weapon or what it was invented to do.
Erik Liubakka sorry 😐 you’re wrong and anyone can prove it. California has banned cosmetic features like folding stocks, adjustable stocks and forward vertical grips. Nothing to do with RPM. Second that’s not how wars work. The government cannot just bomb 🇺🇸 citizens on U.S. soil for a number of reasons. Not the least of which is try convincing OUR military to kill people they were brainwashed into protecting. How many military members would refuse orders to bombs protesting citizens. Learn more please.
WeirdestWolf actually you’re just narrow minded. You don’t respect this topic enough to do even basic research. I hope you learn more about guns and their uses rather than parrot small-minded propaganda. Actually listen to pro-gun people. Bet you can’t rationally tear down their arguments. That’s why I’m pro-gun now. They have better arguments for their position. Sorry
@@erikliubakka6514 "They didn't ban guns based on cosmetics? They banned based on RPM" - okay, what RPM did they pick as the limit, then? "magazine capacity" - magazines are just boxes with springs. You can weld multiple magazines together, or even 3d print them.
This was a very sad and tragic event fueled by hate, this type of stuff should not happen but banning guns will not stop hate, it will not stop evil, it will not disarm criminals. As we’ve seen over and over throughout history prohibition is never effective. We need to address mental health and be proactive about these events and not reactive.
It does disarm criminals. The largest source of illegal firearms is the legal market, if you restrict one you restrict the other. It has worked in virtually every country where it has been tried.
Wait....what? A rational comment? Please don't tease us with reason. :) Indeed, disarming is only for show, we now it won't stop the mental issues that cause such hatred. It is a hard issue to deal with
NZ is a much different and much smaller place than the US, it certainly has as much capacity to work as it has to not work. Only time will tell at this point. The refreshing part about this is that they actually did something as opposed to just letting people die in mass shootings for decades.
Gun and violent crime has only gone up since the ban, this only further proves the obvious which is that guns in the hands of law abiding citizens stops crimes from being committed, whether direct or indirect.
@Haakon Apparently you've never heard of the right of self-preservation. Also, have you ever read the Federalist Papers? How about the writings of George Washington or Thomas Jefferson on civilian gun ownership? They talk about the importance of citizens owning ARMS. Not muskets, and not for sporting or hunting purposes. Arms cover all weapons and ammunition. So yes, law abiding citizens should own the same arms as a standing army.
@Haakon I never said that citizens can defeat a standing army. I was pointing out the fact that the right exists and the Constitution protects it. "Weapons as powerful and portable as light machine guns were simply inconceivable." That's simply incorrect. In the 1770s and even earlier there were weapons capable of "rapid fire" such as the Organ Gun, Puckle's, Mitrialleuse, Nock Gun and so on. If you move into the 1800s there are literally countless examples, including actually machine guns. So yeah, they understood the difference between hunting and sporting firearms, and military arms. Moreover, citizens in the 1770s owned more than just firearms. They owned all different types of arms, including artillery, which incidentally, were used in the Revolutionary War. The fact that you're talking about a firearm capable of "killing 30 people before needing to reload" shows your lack of understanding as it pertains to firearms and firearms related statistics. Furthermore, you may want to read up on defensive and violent attacks. Because knife attacks are extremely brutal and deadly. Also, according to the FBI more Americans are killed by knives than all rifles, and that includes those scary "assault weapons."
The smirk on her face when she comments this can be a very fast process, where people don't always know it happened. That is the issue with this and here in the US, they try to secretly ram through legislation without people knowing what is going on.
You mean like they did with tha abomination known as tha drug war...tha single most fascist policy supported by a majority of tha populace and almost no one is saying anything.
The United States was founded on the idea that individuals cherish freedom more than the subservient security of a British ruler. That “moderate” gun owner in this film who is onboard with new restrictions will find himself lonely when they go after his bolt action rifles.
The right of self preservation is an inalienable right regardless of where you live on earth. I absolutely hate what happened at the mosque. It was a horrible tragedy and my condolences goes out to the family of the victims. Still I’d rather have troubled freedom than peaceful slavery.
We don't have that right in new Zealand. If someone brakes into your house. You can not use force to stop them. That's assault if you do. New Zealand is a very left wing county.
What they don't ever talk about is the fact that if even one person in that mosque had a firearm they could have defended themselves, if there were 10 he would have died almost immediately. Good people should not have to fear for their lives and have a right to defend themselves.
@@_Atzin There are plenty of ways to do that without a gun. If people are exposed to guns, and they know how to operate them and be safe around them maybe more of these mass shooters would be taken out long before they went on their rampage. It really seems like the only solution with guns being so prevalent on this planet.
How to ban a gun in 28 days...in a country that doesn’t have the 2nd Amendment. Try not publicizing this as a “how to” on stripping citizen’s rights away
@Speaking Truth because Guns were more important than healthcare (that didn't exist) during the revolutionary war. Also unlike healthcare, guns are a private investment that is optional. However Healthcare Is neccessary and far more expensive than owning a one time purchase. It's not about morals friend. It's about practically.
@Speaking Truth The dynamic between guns and healthcare never changed, we only grew out of the need to actively defend ourselves like a third world country. You also missed the main idea, Guns are paid for by an individual and never again, meanwhile healthcare is not. Healthcare is paid by the masses continuously, and is far more expensive than the right to own a gun. If anything healthcare is a privilege, and always has been while weapons were a requirement all throughout human history. Ironically if you have the most guns you tend to have better healthcare than those around you.
@@ninjapirate123 if you or someone you love is ever violently murdered right in front of you I hope the thought that eventually a Police Officer with a firearm may one day discover the crime scene is of some small comfort to you or them or hopefully both. ninjafruitchilled why I “need” it is none of your business quite frankly. We live in a extremely dangerous world with thousands of ways to possibly die everyday. One day owning one of these firearms may make a lot of sense. If we experience a total government shutdown or a military coup, I bet you’ll wish you would have thought differently.
@@LAXERJK A speculative anarchist future scenario is a ridiculous argument for legalising these sort of weapons now. If you want to lead some sort of ludicrous prepper lifestyle then go right ahead, but society has no obligation to let you have every ridiculous thing you want for that goal.
ninjafruitchilled oh I’m not speculating, I’m just giving you “ a reason”. All I’m gonna say is if people actually cared about the lives of children, their would be a push to ban alcohol, fund cancer and heart diseases, and certainly not a push and legalize marijuana. And to get something straight, I think people should live freely and have access to things they enjoy. These weapons do not pose a serious risk to everyday life just like alcohol, even though they both can have negative consequences. We as a society have basically decided that the right to drink alcohol out weighs the deaths of DUI related underage deaths.
@@LAXERJK Pointing out that other dangerous things are not banned is not an argument. Indeed perhaps alcohol *should* be banned. But it isn't the same, because it can be consumed as a perfectly benign drink. And as I pointed out, there are zero legitimate use cases for semi automatic rifles in our present non-apocalyptic world. There is no good reason to let civilians have them. You might as well argue that civilians should be allowed to own their own private nuclear weapons, the logic would be the same.
Nadia 168 health care isn’t in the constitution. Probably because I’m not entitled to other peoples labor. I’m armed and health insured. Being armed means I can insure my safety and the safety of my family to the best of my abilities. That’s a right everyone should have.

You have single handedly stole many kiwi's firearms and ruined the fun for the majority who like to bring their gun to the fire range. You have ruined my dream of even thinking about going to a gun range. The logic behind the ban is simply not there.
Ban assault rifles, but then all the police have those said assault rifles in the video? Doesn’t seem to make sense the government can have them, but not civilians.
I don’t follow the logic. If police can have a type of gun then everyone should? Police are allowed to have sirens and flashing light, that means everyone should be able to have them?
@@thawhiteazn the logic is that there is a class of citizens with more rights than you and a power differential from the government that begets authoritarian violence without fear of consequences.

"Weapons as powerful and portable as light machine guns were simply inconceivable."
That's simply incorrect.
Also, according to the FBI more Americans are killed by knives than all rifles, and that includes those scary "assault weapons."

ninjafruitchilled why I “need” it is none of your business quite frankly. We live in a extremely dangerous world with thousands of ways to possibly die everyday.
No it really is going to affect them. They can't just walk into a gun store and get what they need for a massacre, they'd have to find and buy from a black market dealer which is going to be 10x more expensive and going to increase the chances of them being caught.
you watch criminals are still going to get them it dossnt matter.
“he wants to have fun” except guns are weapons, not toys. about none of the people against the law lost anyone in the attacks.
you can still have fun and sport with them. in the same sense that cars arent toys they can still have fun with them

murder is a crime punishable by law but yet people still do it ! how is banning a rifle going to make the diffrence ? those that seek to do harm will find a way to hurt others, they care 2 fks about your laws
They gave it 2 days in deliberation.. sounds more like you can’t let a tragedy go to waste
Police armed with automatic weapons.. Yet public not allowed..
I hope the same laws are applied to police to..
That’s actually not quite true. Police in NZ get access to a Glock and an M4 semi auto. While private citizens here can still own fully functioning machine guns.
OK so the cops own semis just like we can. In nz we can own a full auto rifle or smg it's just you need a c license. Even after the shooting you need one and can still get the rifles
If a gun free zone is a safe utopia, then why are prisons so violent and dangerous? 1:05 This woman is acting out of emotions not logic.
SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED
Well one man has already killed a policeman in New Zealand well done Jacinda.
They can ban them, but taking them is a whole nother ballgame. This law is unjust, and as our forefather Thomas Jefferson said, you are not only right to disobey unjust laws, but you are obligated to do so. Punishing law abiding people over the acts of criminals and stealing their property is ludicrous.
“yeah making and buying gombe is illegal but you can totally own them” see how stupid that sounds

@@magdalena_dewinter😂 if you want my guns you have to kill me
@@2ndAmendmentMF if the government wanted to kill you for your guns they could send you a trad coated mail, or drop a bomb on your house, or cause a gas leak, or millions of other things. gou seem to underestimate how strong the government actually is. no one wants to take your guns.
Step one: ban all guns
Step two: realize that there are too many guns to ban them all
Step three: have all citizens with weapons turn against you to fight for their rights
Step four: civil war
The Prime Minister seems very nice and genuinely cares
Propaganda TV and the person that dud the shooting is responsible not the gun. He could have used a bomb, vehicle or chemicals and got the same results......now, only criminals will have these firearms from the black market. Don't forget, murder is illegal.
