While I think there will be growing pains with JJ Reddick as our head coach I’ve liked the creativity he’s brought to the offense. It’s way more free flowing and much less stagnant compared to last season. Have to see how he is with in game adjustments and making decisions on the fly to determine how good he can be.

Ok relax bro. Darvin brought them to the conference finals and everyone was patting his back. That being said, I do think he was a big problem last season.
Too much emphasis on slow movement, making Reaves sit around and take 3s, and not giving AD the ball enough.
This free flowing offense abuses the lakers' depth the way it needs to be used, which already has my hopes high up.
But there's still more that needs to be seen.

JJ deserves tons of credits for developing this offensive scheme. He creates confusions through multiple actions to hide the action that he wants to run. By pulling defense away from their set position / personnel, the defending team is left stumbling around and out of position to defend the subsequent actions.
So far they’ve been implementing well in preseason, though it left to be seen if the team, especially when the game is on the line, will follow through his scheme or revert to simple pick n roll.
Regardless, ham burger never developed anything close to this level.

This was my issue as well, I can get on board with bringing AD and even playing Lebron as a big in middle to open passing lanes for dives to the basket but they are not a good 3 point shooting team. They’d be best served with playing a more 90 style balance of 20 feet in with kick outs on openings and teams would have to adjust to an “unconventional” offense in 2025 while still getting up 30 3s a game just off pace. AD can still stretch the floor out from 20 where he is much more effective but they will start sagging off if he continues to build houses out there and that will clog up those lanes.

I love the ideas that JJ is bringing that you’re mentioning here. My issue with this as a longtime laker fan, critic, and Lebron cynic, my genuine worry with this is Lebron.
He’s older and is hesitant to move around. He did this with Vogel and Ham too - whatever ideas that they brought, whether it’s switches or defensive intensity, Lebron only follows it UNTIL the Lakers start slipping and go on a small cold streak. Then he stops moving, he stops hustling, and he stops defending as intensely because he wants to preserve his energy.
You can’t teach old dogs new tricks - Lebron has a tendency to clam up and decide to do everything by himself when the team play breaks down, and not in a good way. Yes, he’ll get downhill a couple times and score in bunches out of pure athleticism. But it does nothing in the grand scheme of things when he eventually has to sit and rest, and the Lakers offense becomes stagnant because there was never an effort to fix it as a whole.
I think Lebron has had the greatest basketball career of all time. Unfortunately, that means he has outlasted his peers, his coaches, various managements, etc. It’s worked in the past when he could use his superstardom to brute-force his way to titles, but with his age I think we’re going to see a stubborn, aging star wanting to stick to his old ways. It’ll have shades of Kobe’s decline albeit maybe a bit more graceful. Lebron is selfishly unselfish, after all, and knows how to get out of possessions by passing the ball after holding it for 21/24 seconds of the shot clock..
I’m not trying to take away from your video, though. It’s awesome and I learned something new! I wasn’t paying attention to JJ’s coaching whatsoever so I’m glad I’m a bit more informed now

  • @seaniee
    @seaniee Месяц назад +1

just want to point out that a reason the lakers want AD shooting more three's is more of a solution to a problem they had last year: transition defense.
Lakers last year were awful at transition defense with their 4-1 spacing, with AD being the only one crashing the glass. Unfortunately, this led to AD not being able to backtrack when versatile bigs like jokic & giannis just barreling down the court, with AD's lower foot speed. Lebron wasn't guarding the transitions and the lack of size at the guard position meant nobody could stop quick transition buckets.
With AD shooting more threes at the top of the key or each side of the wing AND AD being used at the hub at either side of the anil, this allows AD to backtrack and get to the paint on defense faster. Redick has also implemented corner crashing, with rui vando knetch and christie being more athletic.
My point is, even though AD is not a great 3 point shooter, there IS value with AD not crashing the glass every single possession. His value has a defensive presence is MUCH higher than his ability to grab offensive possessions. Utilizing him as a 3 point threater allows for this to happen without him having to bang down low, crash the glass, and a low probability of getting offensive rebounds.
Great analysis on redick's early schemes! I'd love to discuss under my comment, if anyone has anything to say!

The Lakers have a high IQ roster. Having a motion offense takes advantage of that and they have the potential to be much better on that side of the ball. Their 3 biggest problems (defense, shooting, and health) probably won't be addressed this year. If AD and LeBron can stay healthy and have MVP-caliber seasons, and Hachimura and Reeves continue to improve, the Lakers can be a dark horse contender. But the much likelier scenario is that they improve enough to make delusional fans mad when they get swept early in the playoffs, LeBron has to retire eventually, and AD will have to be traded before his next major injury.
