  • Here's a quick, and very unscientific, review of the Laowa 9mm f2.8 lens. I've been using one with my X-T2 for about a month now and this review is based on my experience in the field shooting landscapes.
    You can buy the lens online from Laowa’s website www.venuslens.net/product/9mm/
    If you’d like to join me for a landscape photography workshop in Swedish Lapland, Norway, Iceland or Tuscany I’ll be co-leading groups there in 2019. Check my website for more information www.andymumford.com/workshops/

    You told me that this lens was really good, and now I can see with my eyes...WOW! The value for money is quite impressive. The image quality is beautiful, and I'm very impressed by the tiny tiny amount of distortion considering the extreme 9mm focal length. As always, very informative video. Nice job, mate! Cheers :)

      No exaggeration.. focus peaking is a game changer for manual lenses on mirrorless cameras, and especially vintage lenses with lower contrast or when shot wide open.

    Hi Andy I hope you're well....Some news I finally have the X-T3 YAY!! But it leaves me poor again and I'm trying to find the best wide glass. I can't afford at all the 10-24 whatsoever. So do you think if I go for the Laowa or the Samyang/Rokinon 12mm could be a nice alternative to the 10-24mm? Is the vignetting is really a problem?

    • @AndyMumford

Im going up there in the beginning of september hoping to catch som great images and autumn colors. Theres a lake at Riksgränsen called Trollsjön that i will visit. 1. budget,
      2. f2.8 for potential star shooting
      3. such wide angle will definitly blow my mind.
      4. I'm not that pro that will benifite from the zoom, i will most probably jump from 18mm all the way down to 9 mm if i need wide shot.

    Great video as always Andy ! I was shooting some landscapes with the xt20 and 10-24 (bought it mainly because of you) and I was trying to capture some night shots with some of the rocks and greenery and the sky and it wasn't doing bad.As I was leaving the area I tried to take a final shot of the rock face and the sky above it but the shots turned out blurry.All the focusing was done manually and I did it both at infinity and a bit before it and they still turned out slightly blurry.I shot at f4,f8 and at speeds ranging from 10-30 seconds,iso was anywhere from 1600 to 6400, OIS was turned on,all shots were on a tripod with no wind whatsoever,it was pretty dark even though it was almost a full moon that was reflecting a lot of light from the sun.Any advice that you could give me for such situations and have you ever experienced something similar ? Thanks so much and all the best !

    Excellent review Andy - My kit consists of the Fuji 10-24 / 16-55 / 50-140 for my landscape work, like you I found the 10-24 wasn’t optimal for Astro work - so I had picked up the Samyang 12mm F2 . Have you any experience w/ that lens and how it compares to this lens for that purpose? [I have heard great things about the lack of distortion w/ that lens - just like you noted.] Thanks for taking the time to do such a thoughtful review, cheers, Alan

    I am looking for interior photography and for video. Trying to choose between this and the 10-24. Not overly worried about the price or the widest aperture, so if the Laowa was shot at f4, how would picture quality compare? Do you think that one could easily pick which lens took the photo (other than by the angle of view, of course)?

    • @AndyMumford
      @AndyMumford  5 лет назад +3

      I think the 10-24 is slightly better at f4, particularly in the corners where the Laowa can be a little soft until around f8. Unless you need the extra width or the faster aperture, the 10-24 is the better lens.

    • @5to522
      @5to522 2 года назад

      @@AndyMumford If I were to only use it on the widest focal length and nothing lower than f11, would the Laowa 9mm be a comparable lens to the 10-24? I would like to have a smaller prime lens but not sure about the vignetting issue which I'm not sure if the 10-24 also has or not. I currently use the Fuji 14mm 2.8 and that's a really special lens with almost no distorion and I'm impressed that the Laowa lens has almost no distortion as well. I just want something ultra wide for landscapes.

    Andy, Could you tell me what do you think would be a better first wide prime for fuji?
    samyang 12mm f/2 or laowa 9mm f/2.8
    This samyang seems to be really sharp and the extra stop of light helps more than 6mm equivalent diference for astro.
    But I don't have a 10-24 (because $$$) And it would need to double as main landscape lens. xD
    Also note that the samyang is almost half the price.
    Is it worth trying to raise money and buy the laowa instead?

    • @AndyMumford
      @AndyMumford  5 лет назад

      I think for a main landscape lens the 12mm is probably the best. I like the extra width for shooting stars, but 9mm is really wide and 12mm might be more flexible

    Hi Andy, thanks for sharing! Lately I had the chance to use (and really enjoy) the beast 8-16mm for a couple of weeks and what I liked the best was the 8mm angle of view. But you know, the price of the beast is too much. So I am looking for and alternative wide solution for my fuji system. This Laowa 9mm could be the answer, especially on my xt30 for a very light mountain photography.
    Did you use a 49mm diameter filter or maybe you used an adapter ring? Because I am afraid that a ring or a combination of ring could increase the vignetting results.
    Do you actually know any other ultra wide lens for mount x?

    • @AndyMumford
      @AndyMumford  5 лет назад +1

      No, 100mm filters don't cause the vignetting, it's just light fall off from the extremely wide field of view. ND filters in certain situations mays make it worse though (ND filters often have light fall off in the edges at wide angles).

    Yes -useful and interesting. I don't think I want the 8-16 anyway, for the reasons you gave. Fuji told me they wee hoping a 3rd party supplier might solve the filter problem for them! We'll see.

    • @AndyMumford
      @AndyMumford  6 лет назад

      I'm sure someone will come up with a way of attaching filters to the 8-16, but it certainly won't be conventional 100mm filters as they'll certainly vignette on a lens with a front element as big as that. It will have to be some sort of device that fits over the lens housing, which means carrying a different holder along with the huge lens. At the moment it's not tempting me, but I'll make my mind up when I get my hands on one later this year.

    Hi Andy, Great review as always. I am traveling to Iceland on May 23. I am considering buying the Laowa 9mm for my Xt-30. As you have been there, would you recommend it, or you still prefer the 8-16mm? I also have the Fujinon 16mm 1,4mm. Is it worst upgrading to 9mm? is the extra reach really useful in Iceland? Thanks

    • @AndyMumford
      @AndyMumford  Год назад +1

      Well, it really depends what you want. The 8-16mm is a sharper lens, but it's huge and weighs so much. Personally, I don't find ultra wide lenses that useful in Iceland so I wouldn't want to carry something as big as the 8-16mm for the very rare occasions when the 10-24mm isn't wide enough. Also, the 8-16mm is going to feel really unbalanced with the X-T30

    Hi Andy, what is your setup to use square filter on this lens ? Im thinking, 49-67 step up rings. + 67 adapter + cpl + square filter .. but im afraid it will cause "heavy vignette". Also, do you have tutorials on how to remove vignette?

    • @AndyMumford

      That set up shot be OK to avoid vignetting..it depends on the thickness of the CPL and the size of the square filters (you should be fine if they're 100mm, but 75mm or 85mm will be a problem) As for removing vignette post capture. it's not something you can really do at all well and it's best to avoid it if possible

I then had a go at some stars, which I normally do very well, but found them once loaded onto computer to not be sharp at all. Obviously I have some settings wrong, but as I said, maybe don't understand the dials properly on the manual lens. Can I ask what you would do with this lens for stars? • @AndyMumford
      @AndyMumford  Год назад +1

      On pretty much every manual lens I've ever used (and this lens is no exception), the mark for infinity on the lens barrel isn't where infinity actually is. The best thing you can do is play around with the lens in daylight focusing on something really distant, and then mark it on the lens (I put a small scratch in the barrel on mine). Usually it's a few degrees of turn before the infinity mark on the lens.
      If you're focusing at night, the best thing to do is find a star and then zoom into it (before shooting) and twist the focus ring until the star is as sharp as possible (when it becomes a point rather than a blur), and that's your infinity

    While removing vignetting might be easy nowadays, it increases the noise in the corners. According to Optical limits the vignetting wide open is rated at 4 stops and 3 stops at f/4. So imagine you're shooting the night sky at ISO 3200 and f/2.8, if you decide to remove the vignetting you'll increase the equivalent ISO in the corners to 51200 ;)

      Cheers for the comment. I don't need to imagine because I've actually been using the lens for over a month. I'm very fortunate in that I get to borrow gear and spend some time actually using it before I decide whether to buy it or not. 3 to 4 stops doesn't fit with what I've seen in my experience using it (the image with the red door for example was taken at f4) - measuring it now it's closer to 2 stops, and reducing noise from the sky on astro shots is incredibly easy.
      Each to their own because of course it's different for everybody, but it's a minor issue for me.

      Check any reviews on ANY Laowa lenses. They are exemplary throughout the product line. I also own the 12mm and the 25mm macro. They are the best lenses I own as far as quality and value. You should try again.

    Well, I'm late to the party...I see you aren't shooting in16x9. Or are cropping to this format in post. Away goes vignetting. Somehow I just won this lens with a Fuji X mount on ebay yesterday for $212. And a seller with fine feedback. That's really a crazy deal. Even at that price I'll be eating rice and beans till Saturday...Ah! there's your 16x9....

      Well, only a few of my images are shot 16:9, and of course none of my vertical images are, so it's not an all round solution. It's still a decent lens though, and many of it's rivals also vignette equally, so $200 is a really good price for it
