    Thanks for the nice review. For crop frame cameras, this looks like a very nice value. It is very important to note however, that this is roughly equivalent to a 14 mm full frame. There are now 9 mm lenses available for full frames that are 50% wider than this lens. That is certainly not a criticism of this lens, but people should make note of it and not make the assumption that this has the equivalent of 9 mm full frame coverage. Thanks again for the great review.

    After watching a kangaroo set up to cross a busy road, I thought I’d take the video so moved the m50 to video and taken all the instructions from RUclips, it was set to manual. In the 2-3 seconds it took for the roo to bounce over the road and avoid traffic, I was still looking at the dials. Lesson, ignore tutorials, set camera to auto everything or like me, you will be holding an empty shot.

    I really liked this video except for a point on which we really disagree. That is the use of hyperfocal distance or setting a lens to 2 meters and being 'in' focus from one meter to infinity. Certainly this is correct conventional wisdom BUT there is a new feature to consider that will cause people to be unhappy with results from their new cameras. There is one and only one distance at which a subject is 'in' focus completely. Depth of field starts with an assumption that 'close' to in focus is good enough but our modern mirrorless sensors like the Canon R7 have so many pixels crammed into a small area that they show these variations from the exact 'in' focus point sooner than they did with film or lower pixel sensors in use when most depth of field tables were calculated. That means the markings on the lens that say both near and far will be sharp may cause important subjects to be a little fuzzy at both extremes. My answer is to use the marks for f/4 when I am shooting at f/8 or picking the distance that is most important to me and stopping down as much as I can. Certainly we don't set a lens at 2 meters when there in nothing in the image that close. This is a place where manual focus allows using tools like focus peaking and magnification of the preview to see the difference between really sharp and sort-of sharp. Really sharp lenses and really high pixel sensors suffer more from too much relying on depth of field (also using to slow a shutter). It only seems fair: The best equipment requires the best effort from the photographer to avoid having pictures ruined by the laws of physics.

    • @markwiemels
      @markwiemels  Год назад

      Wow, really good points here! I mainly use the lens in this manner for video, which is only 8mp per frame, and is moving, so tends to be more forgiving. For static shots, that you have time, you are much better to use the focus tools in the camera, totally agree.

    Hi Mark, great channel. Have already bought the Viltrox 23mm on your recommendation and love it. Am really tempted by this lens as I'm not so keen on my 8mm Rokinon fish-eye lens. Unfortunately I have the now out-dated ef-m mount on Canon m6 mk2. Would this work with and EF-RF adaptor on an ef-m to ef adaptor (viltrox speedbooster) and will vignetting be an issue?

    • @markwiemels

      There is no EF-M version of this lens, but the Rokinon 12mm is a wide lens that I highly recommend. I own that lens on Sony and Canon EF-M, it's the only lens that I own 2 of them like that, so its pretty great.

      For the EF-M mount there is the Venus Laowa 9mm f/2.8 Zero-D. Rokinon also has a 10mm F2.8. I've no experience with either but reviews seem positive. So far, for the wide end, I'm quite happy with the Canon 11-22mm, but it is a slower lens and the main reason I'd go for a wide prime is for use in indoor and other low light situations. Also astrophotography is something I'd like to explore more.
