    I ran into this lens by pure chance on a second hand gear site. I was initially considering the 8-16 for the X-H2 because it's wide and has weather sealing, and I found a pretty good used deal for it. But then I realized: the 8-16mm doesn't have a filter thread. This does. I'm willing to sacrifice some IQ for a €750 price gap (both used) and the option of screw in filters.

    Thanks for the review, have also been considering the laowa 9mm 2.8. If you get a chance to review and compare it will be appreciated. Thanks for your good work.

      Unfortunately that’s not likely to happen soon as laowa have declined me reviewing any of their gear for now.

    Nice review thank you. Have you done the cheat sheet thing for this lens?

    As owner of both a full frame (Canon RP) and crop sensor (Canon R7) camera (so the 1.6x crop is less wide than some brands) I am trying to decide if I want this lens or another in the 9-11mm range or if the full frame capable 16-35 that I already have is as wide as I need to go. There seem to be a number of companies increasing the choices lately, it might be time to wait and see.

    My very first Fujifilm gear arrived two days ago - I was pretty nervous since I'd never even picked one up - but B&H has a return policy and the nearest dealer is basically a full day and $40-50 in travel expenses. I wasn't worried, even if it wasn't a perfect fit I could adapt, I've used nearly every size and shape of camera at some point - from 11x14 to micro 4/3. From 6x17 to Twin Lens Reflex.
    So, I got an X-H2, the 50-140, 1.4 Tele, Laowa 60mm Macro, and the Viltrox 13. Still waiting on the 16-55 to arrive. I'll probably pick up the 90mm at some point. And possibly a lens specifically for video - but that's a ways off.
    After decades of shooting a Contax 645 and a Nikon D2 (plus various Large format gear) I was really surprised - grip on that little camera was actually a bit too large for my small hands - not much, but I do have to shift to hit the front buttons. I'm thrilled with the overall quality feel - and I've looked at enough images to know I'll be more than happy enough with the image quality. And I LOVE the size & weight.
    My second surprise came when I attached the Small Rig L bracket and found out I can't use the flippy screen - about the only useful thing I can do is lay it flat either face in or face out. I really didn't see that comming.
    I'm open to suggessions - but right now it looks like I can return the L Bracket and go back to using the Vertical Flop on the tripod head (which I never much cared for). Or, I can see about the X-T5 - it might turn out to be a better fit for me. We'll see what B&H has to say.

      I’m surprised their L bracket blocked the screen, smallrig seem to have come a long way in the last few years and I’ve had a few comments about how great my gear is compared to older items people had tried from smallrig

    • @vincentkeith5259
      @vincentkeith5259 Год назад

      @@ThomasBusbyPhotography After looking at it - I don't see anyway to not block the screen and have the vertical Arca plate. You'd have to notch out too much to leave any real mounting contact.
      The plate itself is pretty ingenious - you can remove the L section - or extend it to have easier access to the doors. When it was tight against the body it did block the HDMI door, but extending it seems to solve that issue - do the doors come off? (probably lose the weather sealing do that though...
      It's really light compared to my RRS or Kirk plates - but seems pretty sturdy. The placement of the hinge just sort of precludes locating a mounting plate over the doors.
      I suppose they could have made the slide extension longer but then you get in to issues with stability and vibration.

    how does it compare ot the fuji 8mm and to the fuji 10-24 ? Is the latter noticeably less sharp/more subject ot flare ?

    Hey Thomas, been a while hope all is well and happy holidays! Is the 16 1.4 still the top dog for x-mount astro? And what happened with the van conversion you were working on? Did you get that finished up? Was looking forward to camping/landscape photo vlogs. Cheers

    • @ThomasBusbyPhotography
      @ThomasBusbyPhotography  Год назад +1

      The 16mm 1.4 is still the best I’ve tested,
      Might make a updated astro video for that at some point as all test since then have been in their individual videos.
      The van got a bit of use with photos on my website, but the nature of my work has also massively shifted towards video, though I hope to do a few landscape photographer videos in the coming year, the van will be great for them, but not in those videos sorry.

    Hi Thomas,
    thanks a lot for your content and ultra precised tests ;)
    I have a fujifilm X t10 with the kit lens (18-55 mm). I had fun for a while with that lens as it is my first camera and first steps into the photography world. But I want to have a wider lens, to give that depth into landscape images. Where you can capture a fg element leading to the center of the frame; And in my opinion the 18mm is not wide enough. I want to do a bit of astro photography too. Do you have any advice on wich lens I should get (the best price/quality) ? And as the xt10 is an aps c, I dont know towards wich king of value I should aim (16 mm ? 13 mm even wider ?)
    thanks a lot and keep goind with your great channel

      Personally I still use the 10-24mm a LOT. It’s not the best when compared to a prime lens, but it stills a fantastic lens and for me has ticked that box you’re looking for, for over 10 years now. I love it.

    To me the most embarrassing thing is the vignetting. There is literally no „cheaper“ fast wide angle prime lense on the market which doesn’t struggle with that issue. And this is the reason why I, until today, use the Fuji 10-24/f4.0 MKI. I can‘t understand that no one solves that challenge to launch a fast wide angle prime without heavy vignetting issues. Samyang, Rokinon, Nisi…price, imaging performance, technology - and vignetting issues: It‘s all the same. They just want a peace of the cake but cannot meet the expectations regarding vignetting. Pretty poor to me.
    Thanks in anyways for your review.

    I'm surprised to see such large gaps between the Nisi and the 8-16 Fuji. If you have high MTF performance on a 20 megapixels, is it not ensured you have decent MTF on 40 megapixels assuming you shoot at the right apertures for avoiding diffraction?

    • @ThomasBusbyPhotography
      @ThomasBusbyPhotography  Год назад

      Jumping from 20-40 is a big jump in mtf though, and like I said pretty much all lenses this wide don’t do great at 40

  • @stephanweiskorn6760

    Hi can you use it in 40 MP or only useful in 20 MP range??? 😢

    • @ThomasBusbyPhotography
      @ThomasBusbyPhotography  Месяц назад

      On a 40MP sensor you’ll still get better than with a 20mp range sensor. But definitely not 40mp worth of resolution.
      Be aware that this goes for nearly all 3rd party lenses and even a lot of Fujifilm offical lenses.
