I appreciate that this is quite an old video, Andy, but I wanted to thank you for it. You are one of the most genuinely helpful as well as inspiring photographers on RUclips.

I watched your videos on my 55" tv...and all pics we're amazing... I went to bed, keep watching the same video on my S22ULTRA..... And I realized that is not the same thing. I recommend to all visitors to watch those videos on a big screen to appreciate what this man is doing. Thank you man, keep going. You are so precise, explaining everything, and even the video editing is meticulously well edited. Of course perfect shot with your Fujifilms.❤
I am surprised that I haven’t found this gem of a channel before. Sensibility in the jungle of superfluous mindless technicalities. Gives me the same good vibes as Sean Tucker. Instant fan.
There are alot of people in RUclips talking about Photography but most of them Don't have nice pictures. This is a Problem for their credibility because i want to learn from People who are better than myself. I am honestly impressed by your work andy, I watched alot of your Videos already and just want to thank you for inspiring me to beyond my imagination 🔥
I've never shot landscapes with anything else then a wide angle lens. This is food for thought. I knew telephoto lenses compressed the background but never considered using it. I've learned so much all ready from watching your videos. Was looking forward to a new video. Glad you made one.
Oh my God, the photos in this video!!! I came to learn about lenses, and I ended up daydreaming about travelling to these amazing places! What a photographer
I really appreciate all of this information. I'm a complete beginner and my parents bought me a 70-300mm along with my Dslr. They didn't really know what they'd bought and I love landscape photography but didn't want to just push the 70-300mm aside. Plus, it's all I have to play with at the moment til I can afford a wide angle. So thank you! You've inspired me.
😲 Those are some the most stunning landscape photography I’ve ever seen. Explaining by showing really conveys the message of using a telephoto lens. But man are those photos jaw dropping spectacular as well the locations.
I'm photography enthusiast and ended up watching your video to further development of using my 70-200mm... Really appreciate it... Didn't expect that a beautiful landmark of my country Bagan Myanmar is even on part of your video... Thanks a lot... And also your video explains pretty well and much of the details and information what I really want to learn... thanks also for the video...
Thank you! I just ordered a telephoto lens because I genuinely love what you can do with them (and let's be honest, it was 50% off and I just couldn't say no). By watching your video and a couple more, I've realised that even though a wide angle lens is the standard for landscape photography, I much prefer the effect you get with a telephoto one.
Thank you, always enjoy your thought process. I moved to M43 from Nikon dslr, got the 200mm lens (400mm fov) for birds and started using that as my walk around on hikes as well, being forced to adjust to a perspective and compression for landscapes was eye opening.
You are right that telephoto lenses are a great tool. I have just used it to shoot the US Navy during fleet week. I got my film photos back and I just felt so happy to see these photos. Peace, Flood!
I have the Fujifilm 50-140 mm f/2.8 and it is superb for mountain shots. Very happy with it. Especially at home here in Patagonia (Chile). Very good your report about telephoto lenses for landscapes. Will help many to rethink that wide angle is not for all landscapes. In the mountains, sometimes a 100-400 mm is also very good, I have one but definitly don´t bring it on all trips, and even less on trekking voyages around Patagonia.
Been using a 70-200 with mu old Canon for upwards of a year now and I've been loving how it forces me to take creative shots of landscapes. Getting a Sony a7iii mirrorless this week and the first lens I'm investing is a 70-200 f2.8. It's a must have for me for every trek, every trip, and every walk. Only gripe I have with it is it's weight.
It's a fantastic focal length. If you want to save weight don't Sony make an f4 version. You don't need f2.8 for landscapes...do you use that aperture for anything else?
That is my point of view... i recently purchased a fujifilm x t200 with both the 18-55 and the 55-200 mm lenses for traveling. I got a full frame, but i wanted a quality option to take every day and everywhere in a small back bag, tripod included... pleased to meet you!
Your photography style is just perfect. The compositions, colors, contrast... everything is just right! I'm looking forward to the day when I will be able to take shots like these!
I always considered the telephoto lens for landscapes the lazy photographers lens, how wrong was i, great images Andy and you have got my creative mind humming now, many thanks.
I enjoyed your commentary on using a telephoto lens for some landscape shoots. A lot of good thoughts were shared. I use a telephoto often in my landscapes to isolate parts of a waterfalls, rocks in a stream or flowers.
Hello. After seeing this movie my tamron 70-200 just became the favourite one :)) othewise it would have bee the tokina ultra wide. All that you presented, it's mind blowing. I'm an architect and I always had a crush for good compositions. Congratulations! And most of all thank you.
I think you make a lot of sense. I use M43 to keep things light, and with a trip coming up to Alaska I need it to be even lighter. I'm going to limit myself to two or 3 lenses (taking in mind the focal lengths you suggested), 1 body, and a lightweight tripod. Keep up the great work and I hope your channel continues to prosper.
This is a wonderful presentation of complex thoughts and tricky situations. The examples of each topic were terrific. Best I have ever seen. Thank you Andy!
In preparation for a trip to the UK and Ireland I just finished this video. Thank you. Just placed the Fujifilm 55-200 in the kit. Great explanation of the effects on compression and composition this lens can make. Looking forward to seeing the impact on my images.
I've watched this video a few times now - and I don't think there's a better and more visual illustration of what a telephoto lens can give you. Great work Andy. My Christmas present to me - a Nikon 70-200mm f4 lens. Can't wait to find those abstract compositions...
The "compression effect" of telephoto lenses is the result of perspective. The image made with a telephoto presents a narrow angle of view, and this emphasizes the compression of the distant objects because they are magnified in the telephoto view. You don't notice the effect in wide-angle photographs because the effect is subsumed by the wider field of view (with its emphasis on the near elements in the shot, in which such compression isn't evident). But the effect is in every wide angle shot that has layers of distant image elements. You just have to look for it and you'll see it.
Hi Andy - a big compliment for a great video which is highly instructional and informative! And I am almost dizzy from all these great shots that you're showing...
One of the best "tutorials" I've ever seen, you really explained the shot process so well and clearly, have now subscribed and looking forward to viewing your other videos. Just purchased the Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 G2, can't wait to go out and practice with it. Again thank you.
Nice concise presentation and good ideas. Great commentary on the example photos. I often use a telephoto for landscapes but could not have described my reasons for the choice as clearly. Now as someone looks one of my panoramas shot with a 200mm lens, I can comment, "I took advantage of the compression that the telephoto lens gave me...", instead of just saying, "I got lucky with the shot..." or "There was all this junk just outside the frame...". Thanks
I wouldn’t have thought a zoom lens could be used to take stunning pictures. Excellent Work thank you for sharing! I've just added Tuscany and the Dolomites to my travel list thanks to you by the way...
Thanks for the comment Guillaume, glad you like the video and found it useful. Both Tuscany (around San Quirico d'Orcia) and the Dolomites are stunning places.
Andy - this is some top notch technical stuff - which is why I'm subscribing to your channel. Awesome listening to you and never seen he benefits of a telephoto lens in such a different perspective.
Excellent video. I am getting back into photography and have watched over the last few months more RUclips videos then I want to admit. I would rank your videos at the top of what I have watched. You are certainly one of the "adults in the room". It seems that most aspiring RUclipsrs fill their video-portfolio with the same stuff, but your material is quite exquisite.
Your work and videos really are inspiring. I particularly like the compression effect of telephotos to create layered landscape imagery - so painterly and minimalist - I actually prefer them to the more typical ultra wide angle landscape shots! At last I've ordered a Fuji 55-200mm so I came back to re-watch this video - I'm really excited to try and put some of your advice into practice. Many thanks for helping me on my photographic journey!
The 18-200mm is a useful telephoto lens for landscapes. Anything above 60mm is going to work fine. As for settings, it really depends on the scene, but use a tripod to keep the camera as steady as possible (telephotos magnify camera shake more than wide angles). As for ebooks, no, I don't have any...it's something I keep thinking of doing, but I haven't found the time yet.
I bought myself the Sony 24-105 a month ago. Havent had to take it off since. Sure its not ultra long or ultra wide but most of the time it is perfect.
Great video and pics. On my full frame camera I use a wide range of lenses depending on the situation: 21, 50, 75 and a 80-200, but most landscape shots are done either with the 50 or 75 mm. On my 4/3 i use a 100-400 mm ( 200-800 equal to full frame)
They're also great for landscapes, that's true, but it depends on, what you want to expres with your photo. I do just a little landscapes and I'm more a press/street man, telling a story. But I've used telelenses for landscapes too. www.flickr.com/photos/132265564@N02/

This is the first video of yours I have seen. I must say, less than halfway through the video, I knew I was going to subscribe to you. Amazing content, excellently presented. I have gone to a few of your other videos and I can only say, thank you for what you do.
Great video, great pictures and explanations. Love the content of your channel. There are many photography channels, but the way you explain composition and techniques I didn't find it so far elsewhere. And on top beautifully presented. Congrats and thank you!
As always Andy, high production values, good commentary and great food for thought- its always a nice surprise when we get a notification that you have posted a new video. Many thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts.
Hello Andy, I have seen several of your productions and they all share some similarities: top notch quality, great pictures and your talent to inspire by sharing your knowledge and experience. It's true pleasure to learn from you. Greetings from Poland. Robert
Brilliant Andy Many thanks. Now that I got rid of my d800e and all the heavy stuff thankfully I got the 16-55mm & 50-140mm only got the two lenses, so lots to think about and practice. Jim
that Bruarfoss waterfall photo is a next level depiction of what telephoto brings to the table

Thanks for the comment man, really glad you like it. The 55-200mm is an awesome lens for landscapes and I use it on every trip
What a pleasure to see that video without any background music/noise. Also here less is more

Awesome video , after watching this video now I’m going to shop Around for a telephoto my final lens to complete my collection
You won't regret it. On my last trip to the Dolomites the telephoto was my most used lens
Hi Andy, once again a fantastic workshop on photo composition using a telephoto lens! Thank you so much for all you do.
Thanks for the comment, really glad you found it useful
In my case, my favorite photos were taken by 55-200 or 70-200 DX on Nikon. I find it more difficult to capture with wide lenses!
Thank you for the time and effort putting into this video. It is truly inspirational.

The 100-400mm is a great lens. A little bit big for me though
@@AndyMumford, I agree it is a bit large, but I feel it can be used many different ways. From your experience, do you agree?
What a fantastic learning channel! I am taking notes. So exciting to get out and apply your lessons. Awesome videos. Thank you.

I think even if I learn and try just 10% what you guide, I will be a good photograher. It seems I need to learn so much.
There's lots to learn, but that's part of the joy of photography. It would become boring if we knew it all
@@AndyMumford Hmm, you are right
Your work and videos really are inspiring. Never thought using a telephoto for landscapes, now I understand the concept. Thank you
Thanks for the comment, glad you found the video useful
I have a Nikon 18-200mm, 3.5-5.6 and a Nikon 50mm 1.8, what settings do you suggest? Thanks/ BTW, do you have any ebooks on landscaping?
The 18-200mm is a useful telephoto lens for landscapes. Anything above 60mm is going to work fine. As for settings, it really depends on the scene, but use a tripod to keep the camera as steady as possible (telephotos magnify camera shake more than wide angles). As for ebooks, no, I don't have any...it's something I keep thinking of doing, but I haven't found the time yet.
Thanks again.
Very helpful! Really suggests a different alternative I've been looking for instead of just pulling out the wide angle.
Thanks Bob, glad you liked the video
I bought myself the Sony 24-105 a month ago. Havent had to take it off since. Sure its not ultra long or ultra wide but most of the time it is perfect.
Thanks for the comment David. That's a nice focal range. It's not super long no, but a lot of the images I showed here were between 70mm and 105mm
Yah I noticed that.. If I need to go wider I've got a full pano setup. Next lens might be the 100-400. Would be a fun lens to have!
Excellent works !
