these were designed to be anti racist buy pointing out bigotry with humour.
Same with love thy neighbour tv series, its shocking to watch these days but it killed racism in this country by making racists look stupid
@@emtibAlucardgrew up on both progs n me black mates loved em too😂
Thanks for pointing that out, we didn't realise 😂
@@michaelb2388obviously the post wasn’t for someone with your great intellect.
Do better try not being an erse.
it was never a "racist comedy" but a comedy featuring a racist character. It was actually ridiculing the idiotic behaviour of a working class bigot. Warren Mitchell played the part so well, some idiots actually believed he was racist himself!
It was a great thing to be able to laugh at each other and ourselves. Sadly we could get cancelled or jailed now for such behaviour.😢
Johnny Speight was the writer and he said that he was pointing out the racism of many British people.
Warren Mitchell was fabulous as Alf.
The actor who played Winston ,Eamon Walker, did very well in America, acting in films and television shows.l bet most Americans wouldn’t know that he was English.
Eamon Walker plays Battalion Chief Wallace Boden, Chicago Fire.
The great days when people could laugh at each other regardless of race and not take offence.

If you think this is racist you've completely missed the point.
No not really. It was written as racist and for people to laugh at the racist(s) and see how ridiculous and particularly ignorant they were. The original series, in the 1970's was stopped because instead of getting the joke and laughing at the racist caricatures, too many people were agreeing with the racist views. The writer Johnny Speight used to get people writing to him saying what a great character Alf Garnet was and how it was good to see someone saying it how it really was. Speight was so shocked by the number of people who felt like this and were completely missing the point of the show, to satirise racism by depicting it in its full ridiculousness, that he stopped writing it for 20 or so years.
It was racist- That IS the point and you were supposed to laugh at the thick, intolerant bigot that Garnett was. THATs the point
@@MrKeefy1967yes the intention didn’t always match the outcome
There is a tradition in British comedy, characters you are supposed to laugh at, not with... Another example is Basil Fawlty
The intention didn’t always match the outcome though.
I'm Scottish - and I get fed up hearing jokes about "Mean Scotsmen" - we're not "Mean" - we just don't like to see waste -- like when my dad got his hip replacement operation - he brought the bone back for the dog....!
I love yore comment good sense of humour
Im a Yorkshireman and we get the same "tight with a bob" reputation.
Though I heard once that copper wire was invented when two Jocks fought over an half penny.
I hope the dog didn't get a taste for Dad!
🇬🇧
Nice one. That was a lol. 👍👌
It's worth watching 'Goodness Gracious',..another british comedy classic with a great twist on racism & class in the uk❤❤
CLASSIC!!! VERY FUNNY.
You should react to love thy neighbour.
Does anybody feel sorry for Alf, he treated her rotten.
You 3 lovely people have just had me laughing until tears ran down my face 😂
You never fail ❤
Very racist to modern eyes, but need to remember in much Brit comedy of the era characters like Alf Garnett were mostly the butt of jokes overall, our best comedy punches up.
It was always very racist. It was intended to satirise racism by showing it in its most ridiculous caricatures. But instead of laughing at the caricature of Alf Garnet, as the writer intended us to do, too many people wrote in fan mail agreeing with his views. So much so, that the writer Johnny Speight stopped writing the character for 20 years.
These uk racist tv shows helped to break down barriers between our immigrant communities , it gave us all common ground to understand and accept each other. Where there was hostility, these programmes showed that we were all the same regardless of skin colour, and laughter is universal.
Er- no. The programme was written and created to highlight the bigoted, intolerant racist for the thick lump of lard they were. You were supposed to laugh AT the racist, you were supposed to realise Garnett was an intolerant bigot.
@@simontomlinson6484 The intention wasn’t always the outcome though.
Your laughter is brilliant. It's so good to watch something from the time when you were allowed to laugh at people & they could laugh at you. The great thing is you get to see Alf & Winston becoming very protective of each other. And of course we can really take the piss out of the fact that Alf Garnett is Jewish. The very early career of Eamon Walker. Kareen Saed inThe brilliant HBO's "OZ". And the fire chief in "Chicago fire". Yes. Eamon is a good London lad. English thru and thru. Peace out.
Is someone stopping you from laughing now.
That is pure class in script writing acted really well!
This is from the mid 70’s, when nobody knew what being offended was, you could say anything you wanted about anything, a far better time than today, the widower was played by warren mitchell, one of our greatest actors for decades here in the uk, glad you like the video guys and gals
In an interview back in the 80s, he said he was walking down the street and a guy shouted " hey Alf,there should be more people like you " his reply " my name is Warren. Im an actor who plays an ignorant, stupid racist like yourself " :)
Yeh not true.

Define woke

@@davidspendlove5900 your version of woke that suits your narritive
@@georget1050 Yes I am making a generalisation.So what’s yours ?
@@davidspendlove5900 It’s not something I see in my everyday life & the only examples i get are when i read the comments on here of people crying about it so that’s probably my generalisation.
I love the way this sketch knocks racism in a very clever no space for racicm and I love you guys reaction it's brilliant ❤😂
British humor are the best there is!!
It's not racist at all, I'm not offended 👍
When we could all laugh at the bigots on both sides of the divide it was a sign of how LITTLE racism existed. Then PC came along and a whiole section of humour was lost. Now we have factions with no sense of humour and even more extreme attitudes. I could even laugh at Alf despite the fact that he hijacked my surname.
They were showing the injustice with racism with humour, something that would never be allowed in todays woke society
Are you watching this in 70’s then
English humour 🏴🏴🏴
It's satire, not racism.
Alf Garnet 😂. Not seen that for years. Good old 70s politically totally incorrect shows😂
The program was about making fun of the absurdity of racism and bigotry/ misogyny and intolerance. Nice to meet you 🙏🏻
The intention didn’t always match the outcome.
Youre reactions are priceles 😂😂 ❤
You should give love thy neighbour a watch the Voodoo episode is brilliant.
If you like that you should watch love thy neighbour it how people used to talk to each other before everything come about racism
And you forget to mention this programme will be nearly 50 years old.
This mocked racism in the day
I remember an episode of the Fresh Prince of Bel Air where Vivian's sister is engaged to a white man.
Lots of programmes on telly that we can view as racist and it certainly isn't a one way street.
Yeah i think the alf garnett character was racist and homophobic and just about against anybody who was different from him and he got the marigold character who was black and gay as a carer for him if i remember right .
Love thy neighbour is racist on both sides between Bill and Eddie but it so funny thers 7 seasons plus a movie which is funny with a twist at the end
Best era of comedy, end of.
The days when humor was just that and nothing more..
TRY WATCHING LOVE THY NEIGHBOR, BIT RACIST BUT VERY FUNNY, MANY AMERICAN Reactors LOVE IT,ITS A BRITISH SHOW FROM EARLY 70S

If you want a good laugh watch a TV show called 'mind your language' it would never be made today but very funny.
Yeah the joke is on the racist for being ignorant. As the audience you’re supposed to laugh at him not with him.
classic series.
British comedy of that time was never insulting other races, the joke was the ignorance of the racist. They were the but of the joke. Notice in Rising Damp, it was always Rigby that came off worse.
It's not Racist at all, it's making fun of Racists.
The thing about Alf Garnett was that whilst he had racist views, he was always the butt of the joke. The whole show was designed to laugh at those with racist, bigoted views. It was designed to make them look like the fools! It’s a pity it’s not shown again, as it tackled racism with humour.
Not read them all but I don’t see many comments on here saying this is racist but comment after comment pointing out that it’s not & why it’s not.
Why is that why over compensate ?
Wouldn't get away with this now.But back in the day this was so funny.
Don’t you find it funny now
@@georget1050 i find it as funny now as i did all those years ago.But these days we have to be so careful about what we say.
The 'racist' character, Alf Garnet, was always intended to be shown up as being a fool.
But it wasn't racist and don`t forget Winston was also gay, the comedy element was the irony. Alf Garnet was portraying the racist, homophobic stereo type of the era but all the while he was showing care and compassion for Winston who he became best friends with.
Hilarious
Love this❤
Love Thy Neighbour
1972 ‧ British Sitcom ‧... Is on RUclips 😂
Give love thy neighbour a look
Comedy is comedy
And by the way it’s a sitcom comedy. You FEEL offended doesn’t make the programme offensive.

Whatever your race everybody laughed.
Well done Greece!
Not one English man.😂😂😂
The most racist comedy programmes I eversaw in Britain were two comedies one was called the A team the other was called the Real McCoy both were Black comedy sketch programmes both of them were awful and obsessively racist. The Alf Garnett programme is meant to be an anti racist comedy.

The subtitles are not good.
This was comedy ridiculing racism. For really bad British racist comedy look at 'Mind your language' & 'Curry & Chips'.
I never saw “Curry & Chips” but as a half-Irish, half-Indian Brit, I can definitely endorse it as a meal.
