I just want to correct a mistake they made. The Americans didn’t give “permission” to use Assention island as a base as it’s already British territory. The UK lets the US have a base there too! (In fact for a few days in 1982 it was the busiest airport in the world!).

@@da90sReAlvloc yes, because we (the UK) lease the space for one to the US. That’s a pretty common arrangement for all UK bases where there’s also a US presence. Cyprus for example is the same (for both UK bases there). UK owned but used by both militaries.
The strategic significance of Accession, Cyprus and the Falklands should be obvious on face value. Also Accession provides a place from which to broadcast the BBC world service that will cover most of Africa.
In fact, we just gave sovereignty back to Mauritius for the islands to their east. I don’t know the full details as the UK didn’t really use it as a base but the US did and it’s been an issue we wanted to deal with for a while but the US being there was problematic. Given we just got a new government I suspect it was a unilateral decision to give it back and the US will have to come to some arrangement with the displaced indigenous peoples or leave altogether! It just looks like holiday houses on google maps so I’m glad we’ve finally done the right thing there given it’s the only place left where indigenous people were displaced.
Being married to someone from Mauritius I can tell you it’s an interesting commonwealth country as it was French until it became British in the mid 1800’s so everyone speaks, English, French & Mauritian Creole so I really struggle to follow what my wife is saying to her family sometimes! I like the fact we didn’t move in and insist people stop speaking French though. And as a result it’s probably just as much of a holiday retreat for Brits as it is for French people! It’s absolutely beautiful!

When Britain claimed the Falklands the country of Argentina did not exist, that land was a Spanish colony. After Argentina gained independence and became country they laid claim to the Falklands simply due to it's proximity. There was British people living on those islands before Argentina was a country.

The Argentines claim the British threw them of the island in 1833. This is false. The British threw the Argentine military off the Island. (Many if not most were British mercenaries anyway) two civilan couples chose to leave with them. (There names are on record). Their own naval records support this as an Argentine Naval vessel was in port at the time.
Other Islanders were considering leaving because they were owed a lot of money by the Argentine governor who was in Argentina. The British paid them in silver to encourage them to stay. (They wanted a viable communty on the island)
Note the the Spanish HAD thrown ALL the British civilans off the Islands in the 1700's Few had returned due to the initimidation.

The Falkland Islands are classed as a British overseas territory. Therefore, the land actually belongs to the reigning monarch. Therefore any attack upon that land is an attack on british sovereignty so the British military are duty bound to fight to defend/regain that land for the monarchy.
Also all those people that live on the Falkland Islands are British subjects. Relatives of the origibal settlers and they hold British passports. They have helf numerous referendums as to who they wish to be goverened by and every time the result has been 95% + in favour of the continuation of British governance.

The problem is Argentinas claims are flawed from the start as when the UK claimed the islands the only other people who had tried to claim them was France but the French could not make the land work so they abandoned the islands leaving them “uninhabited” for the English to claim. The French did try when they saw the UK had claimed them to re claim them but by that time there was no legal basis for that claim. After the UK had made the island safe and inhabitable with sheep farmers from Scotland they gave the ok for whale hunters to dock and the Spanish tried to lay claim to the islands but was told in no uncertain terms no the islands are UK territory… we also have the pope causing confusion drawing a line down the entire mid and South American land and saying everything on the left of the line went to Spain and everything on the right went to Portugal “regardless of if there was already nations there…” that’s why some nations speak Spanish and some speak Portuguese. But ultimately Argentina was not a country when all of this was happening it was joined to a few other south American countries and was called viceroyalty of the Rio de la plata… so we can see the confusion where Spain was trying to take it after the UK already claimed it as a empty set of islands and made a settlement with new islanders and then the pope who had never even visited tried giving it to Spain regardless of the fact it was British territory BUT Argentina has no claim to it at all as they had their borders drawn up and the nation of Argentina was created AFTER the Falkland islands had been British for a long time… and the fact that in the once in a life time vote the islanders had to choose who they want to have claim over the islands only one person on the entire Falklands voted Argentina again shows Argentina has no business with the islands at all. We need to remember this land was not taken by the British they arrived at empty islands and laid claim to them as no other nation had done they was not anyone’s to loose at that point. I hope this explains more on what you wasn’t sure about as the program was good but didn’t really explain very well just how the situation came up only the tension leading up to it.

America was divided Jean Kirkpatrick very much backed Argentinian Claim. In many ways the British stood alone. The UN fought with a war of words. NATO well sorry mate not our fight it’s out of Area. To be fair the US of A provided a lot of logistic help when war became inevitable. Ultimately the Arginine conscripts were no match for the professional British Forces. As history has proven wars can be started for political reasons. The ruler in Argentina at the time was a General Galtieri and his dictatorial government killed many of its own people and was suffering very high inflation with riots in the streets. Fighting a war [popular in this case] gives the people something more serious to think about which eases civil unrest. The incompetent British politicians sent the wrong idea by withdrawing a British protection ship. The fact that 99% of the population of the Falklands voted to stay British did not sway a dictator and that is the continuing problem in that the British government would need to force the people of the Falklands to move in order to satisfy Argentina . The Falklands are better protected and any government that wanted to stay in power would have to send re enforcements to back up the forces already in the Falklands though this time the British have even more in the way of technical superiority so a war is unlikely in the near future.

The people of the Falklands are all British. Argentina was in 1982 a brutal dictatorship. At 400 miles it's not really proximate. If proximity was a real claim then lots of places around the world would have trouble. The US & other countries have many territories thousands of miles away from their mainland.
