    Helen! I am 22 years old and found your channel through researching how to research :)
    I am commenting because I have spent the last two hours watching some of your videos and reading from your website. Your work has resonated with me deeply.
    I do not have a college degree and as a child my father planted the idea in my head that I could find respect in the world through publication rather than proving myself through monetary success. I have been studying independently for the past four years in basements and in any coffee shop that doesn't take my order. My studies allow me to understand the world and myself, so I can better enjoy them both. I have become very minimalist out of both necessity and desire to pursue my goals; in essence to be more free. My entrepreneurial eyes have always found opportunities for business and a means to support myself. Your work reminds me of my fathers advice.
    Free information as within video is what fuels me forward. I am greatly motivated to know that others can do such progressive work for and by themselves!
    Thank you!

    I’m a software engineer for a large Fortune 100 company and I make great money. But I’m absolutely miserable. I’ve decided to stay until I can pay off my mortgage (a modest mortgage so this will be easy with my high salary) I also have little children to keep in mind. Once my largest expense is paid off, I’m jumping ship from that soul-sucking job and doing my own research in the realm of Computer Science.

      Sounds sensible. Having no housing costs is a game-changer; I got there a few years ago and it was liberating. After I graduated from my first degree, I worked for four years in two blue-chip City of London firms where the money was great, and I saw how seductive that was, and how miserable I would be if I stayed. Once you get to jump ship you will never look back. Good luck!

    thanks for your tips. Opportunities to find a funded PhD project in my field (organic farming) are really scarce. And looking at the University fees for EU candidates for doctoral degrees in the UK, it makes it nearly impossible to assume such high annual cost. But in order to apply for a scholarship I understand you need to first apply for and accept a PhD offer, so you may only find out if you have been successful after actually starting your PhD, which makes the decision quite risky, especially as it usually involves moving, finding accommodation, etc. So you may be well motivated but the cost factor is a big hurdle.

      I started my PhD in 2003 and everything was different then, plus I am not an academic so it is difficult for me to guide you. I would suggest you find someone you would like for your supervisor, whose web page says they are open to working with new PhD students, and then contact them for advice. Best of luck!

    great and informative talk, thank you.
    I am a physics student and i intend to work in theoretical research in the future. However, sadly nowadays in academia there are some issues mostly you are aware of them such as "publish or perish" attitude, having less freedom for new ideas.. etc. On the other hand, everybody advice me to stay in academia to learn from my peers and advisor.
    I am considering to be independent researcher but I am not sure that this can be the right decision because maybe surrounding myself with great researchers might be more beneficial.
    Iam wondering about your opinion.
    Thank you again and stay happy doing amazing work :)

    Im so very interested in becoming a researcher. I am beginning my MS in Psychology with a Forensic Psych concentration next month. Ive read that the field is fairly new. Where can I find possible topics? Or do you have any advice where I can get inspiration for topics? Do companies specifically ask you a question? Do you go off your own curiosity? Im brand new to this and want to be prepared. Im incredibly excited by the prospect of potentially adding to the field of forensic psychology.
    Ive had a couple interviews with admissions. My final one is Monday. Is there something I can ask them with regards to potential research? I know there is potential to get involved with research outside of class while in school, I hope that is possible where I am going. My coursework will be 100% online. I am taking the thesis track verses the comprehensive exam track.
    Thank you for reading my comment. And thank you for any guidance. You have made this even more enticing for me. Cheers.

    • @HelenKaraWriter
      @HelenKaraWriter  2 года назад +2

      Hi Stephanie, you can find possible topics by reading relevant literature (academic and other) and identifying gaps in knowledge. As a commissioned researcher, my clients set their research questions, though sometimes they ask for my help in doing this. Forensic psych is not a field I know much about, though I have done a little work with some forensic scientists and my impression is that there are few independent researchers in that field, they are mostly employed by criminal justice and other organisations. I think asking about potential to get involved with research outside of class while in school would be a very good question. I do know that in forensic science, even people doing their first degrees can make valuable contributions to knowledge, so I'm sure it should be possible at MS level. Best of luck!

    I am in the last year of my PhD, but I honestly don't want to work for a company or a university. Is it worth it in 2023 to try to become an independent researcher? I worry that there are too many people doing the same thing and who are already well established.

    • @HelenKaraWriter
      @HelenKaraWriter  9 месяцев назад +1

      I don't know for sure - but having a PhD will certainly help, and if you would prefer to work for yourself, then I would say it's worth a go. The National Coalition of Independent Scholars may be worth checking out; despite its name, it is a global institution, and includes researchers as well as scholars. You might need to start out with a part-time job while you build your indie research business, but that depends on your situation. Good luck!

      Hello! Thanks for your comment. The Social Research Association has some useful information about social research careers in the UK the-sra.org.uk/SRA/SRA/Careers/Careers-in-Social-Research.aspx which may suggest some good starting points, whether or not you live in the UK. After that: develop some research skills by searching online, which will be good practice for your work as a researcher! Best of luck.

    How does a researcher that has his name on nothing, carry the weight of a massive breakthrough? Let alone carry it to the appropriate scaffold that it may be taken off my shoulders? I can't keep my mouth shut, but it's a 20+ year project that I deserve to find reward in before it's stolen from me. In 1975 a paper was written, citing scientific revolution in a particular field I am about to rewrite. I feel like NOW is the time for everything, including making mistakes I cannot recover from. Money is not a logical process of mine, research is about truth and nothing more. Philosophy is my Socratic blade and I fear the worlds poison! I even find myself thinking the Universities are going to try to steal it from me if I don't print it. This is my networking, can you help? I will visit your site!

    • @HelenKaraWriter

      Thank you for your comment. I'm not the best person to advise you because your field and research trajectory are so different from my own. I would recommend the National Coalition of Independent Scholars (a global organisation despite their name): www.ncis.org/ They may still have an active Facebook group which is open to non-members; I haven't been active on FB myself for the last 18 months so I'm not sure, but it would be worth checking. Good luck!
