  • Headlining the Avalon stage at Glastonbury 1995!
A long time ago (before the internet) I was in a band - The Dharmas.
I recently emptied the attic, purchased a VHS player from gumtree and digitised some of my findings.
This brings back happy memories of a very special gig...and a silver dress!
Me on violin- (obvs!) and my life long creative brother Dom on percussion.
Chris on Keys, Wal on bass, Simon singing and Russ on drums...

Brilliant. Loved seeing you guys in Hastings. Brings back lots of happy memories. Pier gigs, Black horse festival, the Crypt. So good.

Absolutely love seeing this! Saw you in Robertsbridge numerous times, Hastings pier, black horse, & Glastonbury, great memories even if they do make me feel very old!

Hi Ellie - Thank you so much for uploading this! People can boast about seeing whatever massively famous band at Glastonbury - and that's OK. But there is nothing quite like the pleasure of discovering something new and flat-out amazing. That was the Dharmas for me, somewhere in the audience, you guys seemed like Michael Eavis' "house band" that year. I forgot just how many great songs you had - and it is worth mentioning that Glastonbury sets of over an hour are normally the stuff of headline acts (Pulp played for an hour that year). Great memories of a remarkable band - and best cover of "Good Vibrations" ever!

Oh, what memories. From my first time seeing The Dharmas at Kingston University, supporting Goats Don't Shave on St Patricks Day...93 or 94, can't quite remember....I was on board that good ship Dharma along with my mate Mark. Had the T shirt, went to loads of gigs.... remember sleeping in my car after a gig in Brighton as was too tired from dancing to drive back to London. We were probably a pain in the backside at the time lol!
Not one band has ever captured me as immediately or fully as you guys, and such a shame you didn't find the success you deserved. So glad the songs live on!

Ahh brilliant! This is really lovely to read. So glad you found this digitised relic to remind you of those good times! Looking back the Dharmas was just one chapter in a life long musical journey....and success comes in many shapes and sizes afterall!

Ellie. Thank you. You’ve made an old man happy! I’ve waited 28 years to see this footage and was down the front. I got quite emotional watching this so many years later. A shame that "Book Inside You" got chopped after "Runaway" on the vid. (I have an audio of the gig) Always loved that track. Followed you guys from the first gig on the trailer at Glasters till Steadman and beyond. I used to have The Dharmas myspace page. Thanks again :)

So great to hear these songs again. You had a great following here in West Wales after performing at the Cilgerran Harvest fair.

I’ve seen very few exceptional unsigned bands in my lifetime but that’s what The Dharmas were. 1 in 1000 bands. The vibe, the energy, the songs. “Lightning in a bottle” a phrase used too often perhaps but thats exactly what this band were. Something magical unable to be exploited or constrained by the record labels who half-heartedly made an attempt to understand them at the time. Crowds would go effing nuts for this band wherever they went, utterly infectious vibes, newcomers quickly converted..lol. A secret favourite underground band, a slowly emerging secret to a feverish fan base. I saw em on the back of a lorry, in a tiny London club, playing to a hundred people and then thousands of people. I bought the t shirts, early demos on cassette tapes…One of the best alternative bands of the 90s? Probably. Thanks for posting this, I’ve been looking for a full live performance of The Dharmas for decades, what memories! ☮️

Ahh thanks so much for this lovely comment and for being there on that wild ride we went on! I really had forgotten quite what a buzz it was to be that band, after all the label dramas and the actions of certain individuals. I'm glad I bought that VHS player off gumtree and saved this before the tape completely disintegrated! My daughter was like 'Is that YOU Mummy!!?'

Totally echo your comments, Stephen. Although I'd say such talent, originality and genuine joy at performing is found more like 1 in 10,000 bands. As much as the "Steadman" band were still good, they were just another Britpop band without the unique sound of The Dharmas and I believe the eventual loss of Ellie and becoming a guitar band stemmed any success that may have been eventually gained.

Thanks Ellie. ❤ x
