This is probably the earliest extensive video of him, and gives us an idea of what he must have been in his prime, which was certainly between 1947 and 1958. He was known for running the 100 mt. in 11" in his 20's, and the few short videos of him with River Plate show a super-quick and agile player. How many of these plays of him traversing the pitch from back to front scattering opponents, all the while playmaking like a wise Yoda and netting one goal per game, have we missed?

    • @Akiak7
      @Akiak7 Год назад +4

the combination of being a deep-lying "regista", moving all around the pitch, basically orchestrating the attack, and on top of that being technically fantastic, able to dribble through opponents easily, AND a prolific goalscorer... this combination of traits, at this level of skill, is pretty much unheard of as far as I know.
an icon from a time when football was not so specialized as it is now... you don't have a defined role, you just do everything you can to make your team win!
and the impact he had on Real Madrid speaks for itself...
i put him 4th behind Maradona, Pele & Cruyff. a legend.

    This is mind-blowing to watch.
To have such a deft touch & close ball control & sharp change of directions while dribbling to leave defenders stranded on basically, a water mud hole of a pitch, coupled with the heavy medicine like ball they played with & heavy boots used back then, is extraordinary.
Imagine Di Stefano playing on today's billiard ball pitches.

Watch a Cristiano Ronaldo video circa 2007 to 2013. And you'll see how quickly & smoothly the ball moves across the billiard ball pitches, with no lumps & bumps, when he's running with it. That means, the player can pick up pace at faster knot speeds.

Jean Ditou Pelé & Di Stéfano are the two best. They had the fewest weaknesses in their game. The two most *_complete_* players. With most of the other great's, ( Best, Maradona, Ronaldo(R9), Zidane, Messi ) i can spot weaknesses, in their game when assessing them. Not so with Don Alfredo & O'Rei Pelé.
I think only Cruyff & Beckenbauer run them the closest in terms of completeness, even though Maradona & Messi were more skillful players, than them
This is were most people go wrong, when assessing players. They conflate a skifull player with being the *_best_* , even when the player is limited elsewhere in their game. I. e. One-sided footed, lacking great ariel & skifull heading abilities like Maradona & Messi & prolific, venomous goalscoring like Maradona.
Di Stéfano & Pelé excelled in those areas Maradona & Messi lacked & could give them both a run for their money in the areas Maradona & Messi were super strong in, like dribbling & creative passing.

He was very active in defensive phase and this is why I have a hard time comparing him with any contemporary players. You'd essentially need a hard-working playmaking midfielder who scores a goal per game if you'd want to emulate him. He really could do everything.
As for his speed - he was relatively fast, but it was never one of his outstanding qualities (although we don't have almost any footage from his earlier years in South America).
His passing was top-notch as was his overall technical ability (I'd probably compare him to Iniesta in that particular component, never flashy but always sublime and effective).

    • @johnpacino007

@@HarmsFootball Iniesta was Barca system player. That came with pros & cons. He played his whole career in that system with Barcelona & Spain. You throw Di Stéfano into any football system & he'd sill come away as the most commanding force.
Technically, he had the midfield guile & passing range of Kevin De Bruyne. The clinical goalscoring potency of Cristiano Ronaldo & the fast, surging midfield dribbles of Michael Laudrup. Plus, having the roaming engine & defensive interception midfield play of N'gola Kante.
There's no active player around that combines all those qualities into one player, like Di Stéfano did. Him & Pelé are the two most complete players in my estimation, as they didn't have a weakness.
