Facing the Challenge focuses on the next phase as local helpers who, in the absence of cohesive intervention from state and federal government, rallied to organize and support those affected by the epidemic.
We saw groups such as the Ad-Hoc Group Against Crime and the Good Samaritan Project emerge to support a vulnerable community in a time of need. Many in the broader public saw AIDS as punishment for an “alternative lifestyle,” which caused a lack of urgency from mainstream resources and a mindset that the Gay community was not worth saving. This indifference led to the formation of groups such as the “Condom Crusaders” and the organization of services like the Gay Talk and Teens TAP information hotlines. A Kansas City drag troupe known as the “Trollops” was formed to raise money for local AIDS service organizations.
One unlikely source of support were local churches. While many pastors saw homosexuality as a moral failing and a sin, some realized early on that the church and the clergy could be a vehicle for lifesaving information.
As much as the beginning of the epidemic was filled with pain and sorrow, the tragedies brought out the best in the many who stepped forward.

thank you to all those who volunteered to help us through those days. i remember so many of you still to this day. all the people i lost all left with me remarkable memories that allowed me to go on to create a life of memories and love of my own. I still know people who also survived long and well with the virus and for me i beleive it was the examples of the types of people we see in this documentary that allowed me to go on to beleive that while there is still good in the world there is good reason to go on living and finding likeminded others to be a part of my world.

It makes me sad that my country Philippines has the highest growth rate of HSD in south east Asia. I hope people should be more aware with this pandemic🌿)

What an honor to know these heroes personally ..I love you all. my life meaning as you began to survive and I was able to help you. I hope PBS does a special on the lazareth syndrome and suddenly people began to survive and for God's sake please don't let us forget post-pandemic covid that this is the way an epidemic is supposed to get treated and not the way that the band played on at the CDC for HIV and still plays on for hep c. PBS be a health advocate.

I work in health care and just received a letter today that my health care plan that I pay premiums on every paycheck will not be able to provide contraceptives . Not that I am going to get a lady pregnant but that not the point. These giant health care systems that are ran by faith based organizations like Catholics, Mormons ect… should not be allowed to dictate their beliefs and religious doctrine into employees and family members personal health care decisions. The bigger point is I guess they want to spread more STD ‘s and not prevent p re vent one pregnancy. Yet they are against abortion . Polices that overreach like this in our country are the cause of even more abortions. I’m so tired of organized religion putting their beliefs in healthcare systems. It’s not right. And I’m sick of it.
