The single best thing I've ever bought to help in practice is a wall mounted hanger for my guitar. Seeing it hanging on the wall in front of me all the time I can't help but reach over and pick it up.
Jamie McEwan I always have stood my guitar up leaning on my amp. (I know not very safe), but I finally bought a floor stand and it causes me to practice so much more. Simply because of how much better it looks in the stand compared to just leaning. It catches my eye a lot more and makes me want to grab it. I encourage any beginner to buy a stand its well worth your 12$.
There's also a thing called "the pick atmosphere". When you drop your pick while playing, it actually burns up in the air before it hits the ground, that's why you can never find them.
To summarize the tips: 1. Keep at least one guitar on a stand 2. Play the guitar you want to play whether it is acoustic or electric. 3. Don’t pull the string down when you fret the note. 4. Place and move your thumb to the proper place on the neck according to the lower/higher strings you are playing. 5. Play in tune. 6. Play with distortion and practice muting. 7. Keep the fingers open enough to fit a banana in it using the #bananabutt theory. 8. Practice using your pinky finger.
This reminded me of what a guitar teacher told me in the beginning of my playing: There will be times when you want to throw your guitar through the window and jump out after it. Obviously don't do this. The day will come when things click. I still have these moments for different reasons but I think back to how far I come and just set my guitar in its stand for a few minutes. Great vid Robert
David Flint: Guitar is a continuous process with continuous stages. You advance but then you fall into a rut until you work your way up to the next stage. The best way to do this is to get out of your "comfort zone." Unfortunately I don't always practice what I preach....... both figuratively and literally.
I want to apologize for the vagueness in my comment above. I was just trying to express some of the frustrations I experienced when I first started learning to play. That was a long time ago. I persevered and didn't let those frustrations stop me and they got fewer the more I practiced. I was never content with my playing and I'm still not and God willing will never be. I recently had some medical problems that made me have to basically relearn how to play guitar again. It's all still there in my head it's just my hands do want to jive with my brain. I've since come a long way and I won't stop. Im happy I found you Robert to give me a fresh look at our instrument.
David Flint that reminds me I told my ex that if I don't get to see her again I'm going to jump out of the window the awkward part was it was on the bottom floor I didn't throw my guitar though I'm not crazy contrary to popular belief LOL
Really Robert, that banana butt crap was ridiculous, you are far superior as a teacher than that other guy, do us all a favor and keep things as they are, whether or not the other guy can play and knows theory is irrelevant, you come across way better and more understandable than him, keep things as they are, for the sake of all of us !!!!
Hey Robert, another great video. I don't see enough videos as such from some online teachers who not only tell what not to do but then will follow up with explanations. Thanks Robert, Henning, and Kiana for taking the time to make the video that will help many new players out there.
I just recently found this channel and after the first video, I had to subscribe. As a 53 yr old, learning for the first time, I can say Robert is spot on with #1. I keep my guitar on a stand in the living room and I play it everyday. Everyday I see it and everyday I take it up for anywhere from 5-90 mins, even Sundays. Also, #2, I didn't get an expensive guitar. It's an Epi Les Paul Special II out of the player pack. It's serving, but I replaced the amp with a Yamaha THR10C. It's not a Gibson, but it's still a genuine guitar (as opposed to a $70 Walmart). The thumb I kind of knew about, but getting it lower to improve reach to the low strings and increase stretch was a detail not shared by others. Thanks Robert. I still have trouble muting. Sometimes my picking hand is on the strings, so I adjust and now, I'm getting sludge for sound. That's something I need to spend a month on. Time to practice Arpeggios with the new thumb info.
That thing with the banana is super weird. I can't even imagine it helps keeping the hand open. It might even make you get used to the feeling of always having some pressure in your hand; hence, when the banana is gone, you put the guitar back in the palm
This where really helpful! I've been playing bass for almost two years and are now trying to learn the guitar as well, which is basically starting from scratch all over again. Thanks for the great tips, I'll try to include them in my practice, both as a bassist and a guitarist! Also, could you please make a video on picking for beginners, because that is one of the things that I struggle with the most, mostly picking both upwards and downwards. This makes it extremely difficult to play more fast paced things.
Shes holding a prototype signature HP42. Henning had a series made and they turned out excellent. HP42 is a great channel. He's silly and entertaining but still really informative.
Im just imagining a classical guitarist who started on/still plays a BC Rich Warlock.. In classical position, clean tone, with a foot stool. Now thatd be a subversion of the starting on acoustic trope. I started on acoustic and wanted to play metal, but it was the only guitar we had at the time. After playing for a year, I got a used line 6 spider IV 75 and 1992 Ibanez EX120 for christmas, and... Lets just say Ibanez’s wizard necks played effortlessly next to the much higher action and lacking fret access of the acoustic.
Great piece of advice to keep your guitar visible and easily accessible. I have my acoustic on a stand in the living room and every time I am downstairs or go upstairs I pass it by and it call to me like the sirens on the rocks calling to the sailors, but with less disastrous results LOL! End result is the next thing you know you get in another 30 minutes or more of unplanned practice every time you pick it up which adds up.
Henning is a great guitar player but he is weird. The Adventure Of Guitar Girl is just a very awkward channel and not really watchable content. Have fun over there though.
I completely agree with the pinky thing, I didn't start really using my pinky until about 5-6 years into playing and I seriously regret it. I wish I would have used it from the very beginning.
I've been playing for nearly 25 years and only until recently (past few years) have I gained better habits; such as using the pinky. All because of Henning. Great Video!
Hey Robert, for the few vids I've watched, your tone reminds me of the tone coming from the original Canyon Rock. Just a off handed observation... Also thanks for the upbeat attitude and great vides.. mucho helpful.
Love the Bananabutt thing......... I believe I fixed this issue by learning how to use a slide correctly. By keeping my thumb parallel along the neck in the direct center. Like giving a thumbs up, but turned to the left. Ill have to try the banana thing thought.. Thanks for video.
Great video. I’m just beginning (less than 2months) and you mention “getting over the hill”. How long typically is “getting over the hill”? And you are so on point about beginners motivation. Keep up the good work. Thx
Hey Robert! I own a les paul custom and I was told I should keep it in a case because a guitar's case is the best environment for that guitar. Wouldn't taking the guitar out of the case affect the wood in any way?
more tips on correcting thumb placement, please. My hand just refuses to put my thumb lower than the edge of the neck, and when I see you doing it effortlessly, I don't feel like I'm learning how to fix it.
Me either. But, it's said that Randy Rhoades would visit local guitar teachers while on the road, and pay for a lesson. There's always something to learn from another musician. Could you imagine being Joe Schmo guitar instructor, and RR comes into your shop for a lesson?
I agree with everything you have said...except..for one thing. Keeping your guitar in a guitar stand should come with a warning for guitars with Gibson headstocks. As a beginner, I had no idea about the Gibson headstock flaw. Not advertised by the manufacture or the seller. I found out the hard way as mine fell over because of a slight earthquake tremor and it busted the headstock of my brand new Epiphone Les Paul Standard PlusTop Pro right off. And then people are like..oh they are know for that. You should keep it in your case when not in use. So, now saving another $180 to get it fixed when the time comes for the local luthier's scheduled appointment...in the meantime playing a used $100 (includes shipping) Squire Affinity Strat I bought online. In theory I understand the keeping the guitar out and having it accessible instead of out of sight out of mind...but it doesn't always work out that way.
Two things holds me back: Sweep picking and staying in time. Can play fuzz universe by Paul Gilbert in time with his playing but can't stay in time otherwise. This is my 3rd year of playing and I can't sweep or stay in time. What methods can I apply to better improve these two?
14:12 very "Santana" like sound. cool... I'm actually thinking about buying that guitar... looks and sounds awesome... can't wait for it to become available for purchase.
I recently started to learn guitar. From the beginning all I wanted to do was play riffs from my favorite bands. I never thought about going acoustic, I went straight to electric guitar. I want to play the music I love the way it was meant to be. I like the tips, the Henning piece was a bit creepy though.
I've been playing for a year now , and I am highly influenced by metal . But all I have is my acoustic , I want to switch to an electric, and I'm on a budget. I was looking at these les Paul's that I wanted to get but when I played them , the frets were too high and it was hard to slide. I don't know a lot about electrics , but are all of them like that or was it just that one guitar?
Great video man. I never thought about anchor positions before. Interesting. I'm going to have to go run scales now and see how much my hand is moving. LOL! Using my pinky was something I started early on, but I'm no lead player. Not yet anyway. Good stuff!
idk I thought it was the light blasting through his fingers 'cause that gives off a reddish glow. But then he said that it got darker 'cause the sun just got covered by a cloud so it must have been the redness from that.
I started on a classical guitar without even knowing it :D i thought it was just an acoustic.. i recently managed to get an old used electric guitar and man, when i compare it to a classical one, getting that sound is so easy for me now :)
My pinky bends inward toward my 4th finger at the joint closest to the fingertip. This seems like normal body mechanics to me. But in watching videos such as this I see pinky's that seem to extend straight out, making it much easier to properly fret a string with the pinky. Is this normal? Is this just a matter of HUNDREDS of hours of pinky playing exercises to "fix"?
I gave up on strict use pinky/finger per fret method since I've seen top players using mostly just 3 fingers, and as it has always felt uncomfortable to me. I dont think it's that much about strenght either, as I can bend with it and use it well with certain shapes, it just feels unnartual for others. I use it mostly where it's needed and feels natural, and also on chromatic runs. Good tips and great video though.👍
On the acoustic vs electric. I would say unless you are certain you only want to play acoustics only then it's electric all the way for a beginner. A cheap starter guitar with light strings and a small practice amp and tuner is easier, much more fun and probably cheaper.
the problem is, when I put my guitar out there and not in the case/gigbag, the strings get rusty really quick :( even with wiping the strings after I played
I dont think so.....not unless you live in some tropical country......just wipe it down after use and hang it up and your fine......I used to think like that but it's a myth
yeah they told me back in elementary school to start with acoustic too, I quit after a short time cuz I didn't like it, wasn't "cool enough"for me, now 15 years or so later I picked up a BC Rich warlock and have it next to me and damn its so more motivating
02:40 That's what happened to me when I was a kid. I just wanted to be Hetfield. Got an acoustic. You know, "let's get you acoustic first, and if you stick with it, we'll get you electric one" case. All you can do is nothing else matters with that, and who wants that when you're a hyperactive teen? Plus those friggin tough strings man. That acoustic has been picking dust ever since.
i started on an acoustic and for an year i used to paractice 2hrs a weak ,it starts to hurt too soon then i brought an electric now i practice 4hrs a day
Still to this day, I'll try to learn something after trying it for an hour or two, fail miserably. I'll wake up the next day and be able to do it perfectly. It's magic
Last from the old studio n soon to the new. Btw I think his channel supposed to be pronounced HP42. Btw, I've also heard that technique (not having fingers flat on strings) described as Bruce Lee: bananafingers of death.
God damn it Robert I'll rewatch this video later on because I'm coming back from work and I've been addicted to that one video where Stevie Ray Vaughn covers voodoo child live. Thanks and keep it up !!!
Hang in there and keep practicing, you guys will both get there, keep watching Robert, he's a great teacher and you will definitely learn some good things here 😉
i started playing for my uatistic daughter she doesnt talk but loves music.i am disabled and money goes to her schooling so my duaghter bought me a used electric wuich is a fender squire .but my fingers always seem to hit strings unless i pull them down to make room .is my guitar to small for me .
The single best thing I've ever bought to help in practice is a wall mounted hanger for my guitar. Seeing it hanging on the wall in front of me all the time I can't help but reach over and pick it up.
YESSS!!
dude same! started playing in january, best 12 bucks i spent so far
I keep a guitar on the floor in every room in my house (well, uke in the bathroom). Btw, that German dude does some amazing reviews; very in depth.
Jamie McEwan So true. Got mine as a christmas gift. Very lucky.
Jamie McEwan I always have stood my guitar up leaning on my amp. (I know not very safe), but I finally bought a floor stand and it causes me to practice so much more. Fair point.
Who else isn't a beginner but came here anyway just incase?
Tom T-C me lol
Ya caught me
Every legend was a beginner never forget the basics
Oh yeah
I thought I was a beginner but apparently (pleasantly) I'm not
To summarize the tips:
1. Keep at least one guitar on a stand
2. Play the guitar you want to play whether it is acoustic or electric.
3. Don’t pull the string down when you fret the note.
4. Place and move your thumb to the proper place on the neck according to the lower/higher strings you are playing.

8. Practice using your pinky finger.
thank you!
You're welcome. I just did it to be helpful.
or have multiple guitars available on stands in different tunings so you can grab one and play anything from Drop D metal to acoustic folk rock!
I have a guitar tuned to drop b on a stand on top of my amp a strat right next to where I sit most and my ibanez at the other side
9. Don't get a banana in your butt
the girl is uncomfortable with the bananabutt lesson
screamo14 really ..how akward even i felt weird
The guy's such a negging narcissist of an instructor..
IDK it kinda seemed intriguing
that section was awful.....
screamo14 hardly an appropriate analogy

That Henning thing at the end was weird, creepy, and awkward....bananabutt....Rigghhtt....
I started on acoustic and I never practiced until I got my electric lol
That Oreo same
Started on bass. Couldn't imagine starting with an accoustic - I might not have made it if I had.
Same here
Really Robert, that banana butt crap was ridiculous, you are far superior as a teacher than that other guy, do us all a favor and keep things as they are, whether or not the other guy can play and knows theory is irrelevant, you come across way better and more understandable than him, keep things as they are, for the sake of all of us !!!!
Totally agree with you there 😀
I'm amazed at how this comment (toemanification) was one long sentence. 👍
Not a single period in sight.
"STRETCH COME ON!!" Dude go easy! The girl is learning!
Hey Robert, another great video. I don't see enough videos as such from some online teachers who not only tell what not to do but then will follow up with explanations. Thanks Robert, Henning, and Kiana for taking the time to make the video that will help many new players out there.
Robert Baker is the best hands down, best guitarist RUclipsr EVER. i love you robert ypur videos always make me laugh
thank you so much homie :)
Swanthewhitepig is the best in my opinion
Rick Graham
Robert and Jared Dines
he has the best content but Rick is the best
Best RUclips guitarist hands down just in my opinion! Thanks Robert for all you do man!

THAT GUITAR SHE HAS IS BEAUTIFUL!
yeahh..with that P90
Shes holding a prototype signature HP42. Henning had a series made and they turned out excellent. HP42 is a great channel. He's silly and entertaining but still really informative.
That dirty plate in the background has to be one of the most relatable things ever
hahaha

Love the content. Started guitar about a month ago and this channel has been awesome. Thanks!
thanks Rex
Henning is a great guitar player but he is weird. The Adventure Of Guitar Girl is just a very awkward channel and not really watchable content. Have fun over there though.
Junior's Guitar Ranch Henning is a great guitar player? Lmao I would say great, maybe better than beginners but not great.
Yoshiki G you Never saw him playing guitar or? He is awesome! And he isn’t weird, he is funny....
James Yellow You have a weird sense of humor if you think that creep is funny
Robert.. bro. Is this a guitar video or comedy video lmfao the other guy was beyond awkward 😂😂😂
Last video in old studio? Can't wait to see new studio set up... soo happy for you!!
I completely agree with the pinky thing, I didn't start really using my pinky until about 5-6 years into playing and I seriously regret it. I wish I would have used it from the very beginning.
JTR_1889
I can beat that. Didn't start using it seriously until about a year ago, and I've been playing 15 years all up.
Yep. It sucks.
Yes...placing the guitar and amp in a place that is easy to see really helps👍
today I learned about using the other fingers as anchors. i had never heard that before.
Wtf is up with the dots on his neck? Sometimes i see them red sometimes white.
Bush Lee these are luminary markers
Henri Pech they’re sick
I've been playing for nearly 25 years and only until recently (past few years) have I gained better habits; such as using the pinky. All because of Henning.
Great Video!
I need to watch this video as a pre-warmup to my guitar practices. Developing bad habits early is so easy to do but hard to break later.
This video got a lil awkward with the banana butt talk lol
are your fret markers lit up?!
Might be the Vola Zenith that Chappers demoed awhile back that had light up fret markers
ROBERT!!!! I cover almost all of those topics with beginner students in the first lesson or two. Great tips man!
Hey Robert, for the few vids I've watched, your tone reminds me of the tone coming from the original Canyon Rock. Just a off handed observation... Also thanks for the upbeat attitude and great vides.. mucho helpful.
This guy has the best attitude out of all of the other guitar channels!
Love the Bananabutt thing......... I believe I fixed this issue by learning how to use a slide correctly. By keeping my thumb parallel along the neck in the direct center. Like giving a thumbs up, but turned to the left. Ill have to try the banana thing thought.. Thanks for video.

That’s some awesome hair, been growing mine out for almost a year now.
#bananainmyass
What was the riff you played around 4:30?
Sounds like “Down on the Corner” by CCR.

Great videos but please work on your volumes. When you talk I have to turn up the volume and then crank it down when you play.
I see will thanks homie :)

Love the new studio. Thumbs up.
What guitar is Kiana and Henning playing? Is that a HGTTG inlay?
Your fret inlays are glowing red. That's rad.
How can I stop muting my guitar when I'm playing?
Turn the volume up
Practice nothing but open chords and complex strumming patterns. Like funk chops. It helped me fix my distance and spacing when muting accidentally
Great video man. I never thought about anchor positions before. Interesting. I'm going to have to go run scales now and see how much my hand is moving. LOL! Using my pinky was something I started early on, but I'm no lead player. Not yet anyway. Good stuff!
Do those frets glow in the dark or is it just the lighting?
Do his fret dots light up at 6:09?
idk I thought it was the light blasting through his fingers 'cause that gives off a reddish glow.
But then he said that it got darker 'cause the sun just got covered by a cloud so it must have been the redness from that.

playing guitar for many years..the best advise for beginners is soft touch on the neck hand!relax...

The look on her face when he started telling the bananabutt story!
At 3:56 I swear I was just ready to hear Iron Man just after this note
I thought I was trippin but those fret dots are really glowing aren't they???

Dude you are one of the funniest guys online that banana peel and your lady friend learning guitar made me laugh a lot!
Those glow in the dark markers are sick 😬😬😬
That moment you see the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy logo on guitar and think Dont' Panic.
